Teil des Werkes „Geist, Identität und Gesellschaft“ von George Herbert Mead dar. George H. Mead (1863 - 1931) gilt als Begründer des symbolischen Interaktionismus. Sein wissenschaftliches Arbeiten und die Entwicklung seines Werkes wurden durch den Darwinismus und den Pragmatismus geprägt. Zum ersten war das Darwins Evolutionstheorie. Charles W. Morris schreibt : „Daraus schien zu folgen, dass nicht nur der menschliche Organismus, sondern auch der ganze geistige Prozess innerhalb der evolutionären Entwicklung interpretiert werden müsse, dass er diese Eigenschaft der Veränderlichkeit teile und aus dem Zusammenspiel von Organismus und Umwelt entstanden sei.“ 1 Der Organismus muss sich nach dieser Theorie an seine Umwelt anpassen um zu überleben.
Der Darwinismus ist u. a. auch wieder eine Strömung der den amerikanischen Pragmatismus, der zu dieser Zeit erst richtig entstand, beeinflusst hat. Mead selbst bezeichnet sich als ein Vertreter dieser philosophischen Richtung. Die nach Darwin beschriebene aktive Lebenssicherung des Organismus ist nicht als deterministisch anzusehen, sondern ist abhängig von problemlösenden Denken und Handeln der Menschen. Mead hat daran gearbeitet eine These zu entwickeln, die die Entstehung des selbstbewussten Subjekts, also der Identität, beschreiben kann.
