Day and Section Hikes Pacific Crest Trail: Oregon, by Paul Gerald

The Pacific Crest Trail was designated as one of the first National Scenic Trails way back in 1968. As it traverses the “high road” from Mexico to Canada, incredible views are not only commonplace but also uniquely diverse, because the trail connects six of North America’s seven eco-zones. The PCT’s familiar, well-worn path is a special place for hikers from all walks of life on walks of all lengths and for all reasons.

Instead of guiding you through the arduous task of hiking the entire PCT, the goal of this book is to help you plan trips that incorporate hiking on the PCT in Oregon, whether you have just an afternoon to spare or you want to escape for the entire weekend.

Carefully edited maps and elevation graphs generated with GPS data collected by the author on the trail will help make your trip a success.

This cargo-pocket guide offers author-tested advice to help you make the most of your time away from civilization, however long (or short) that stretch may be.

Don't have 5-6 Weeks? Can you Spare 5-6 Hours?
By Fritz R. Ward
Hiking all of Oregon on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is a pretty massive undertaking. It's well over 400 miles, passing through some spectacular country like Mt Hood and Eagle Creek, the Sister's wilderness, Crater Lake and southern Oregon's landmark Pilot Rock. But you don't have to see it all at once. The PCT is bisected by, or passes very near to, several roads where one can pick up the trail for a nice day hike or quick overnight backpack trip. And that's where books like this one come in.

Using this book, and similar titles in the Wilderness Press series, you can quickly explore sections of the trail throughout Oregon, a sort of highlights reel to the trail without the massive time commitment of trying to walk every step. The book is divided into chapters and lists hikes from south to north. Not every step will be on the trail, particularly with loop hikes, but you will get to see the areas the trail passes through. Each hike is also rated for difficulty, how appropriate it is for children, and time expenditure. On the whole, this volume. Like others in the series offers a good alternative to a through or long section hike. And for most people, it's a great option.

From Booklist
Feuerstein is a renowned yoga scholar and a tireless communicator, sharing his knowledge in more than two dozen books on the subject as well as translations of key yoga scriptures. Most Westerners have a limited understanding of what the term yoga, which means "union," implies. Feuerstein describes yoga as a "spectacularly multifaceted phenomena," and performs a truly yogic feat by combining commentary with translated Sanskrit teachings, history with theory, the spiritual with the practical, and the classical with the contemporary. He illuminates every facet and phase of yoga from its roots in shamanism to its connections to the complex and dynamic spirituality of India, especially yoga's relationship with Hinduism and Buddhism. Feuerstein explicates the different yogic schools and profiles key yoga teachers. Yoga is a vast and vital universe maintained over the centuries by the discipline and persistence of its practitioners, who strive to join the physical with the spiritual, the "individual self with the supreme Self." No more adept or comprehensive study of yoga aimed at a Western audience is to be found. Donna Seaman

The most extensive and detailed work on yoga in English
By Dennis Littrell
This extraordinary work represents a lifetime of devotion to yoga by its preeminent Western scholar. It is at once a distillation and compilation of all that Georg Feuerstein has gleaned in his extensive travels both academically and spiritually. It greatly broadens the usual scope of yoga to include its manifestation in other religions and goes back in time to the edge of the prehistory. Feuerstein understands that yoga is both an ancient practice, and, by itself, a profound and venerable religion. More than anything, however, it is a salient expression of the culture and philosophy, the lifestyle and history of the Indian subcontinent where it was the midwife of the great religions of Buddhism, Jainism, Taoism and of course that great body of belief and practice known as Hinduism.

Feuerstein is in one sense a true believer. He has devoted his life to the study of yoga and attendant phenomena, in particular Hinduism and the broad Tantric tradition. One gets the sense that even here in this lengthy work, he knows much more than he is conveying; that there is a synergistic power in his extensive knowledge that allows him to know things that he cannot express. One feels his intense desire to say something that perhaps cannot be said, something spiritual and personal that can only be experienced.

In another sense he is a hard-working scholar who reports on what he has learned without passing unnecessary judgments or drawing unwarranted conclusions, although he does interpret. He is, in this sense, the American expression of the great Romanian scholar Mircea Eliade (who wrote in French) with perhaps a pinch of the Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo, on the one hand, and the English tantrist Sir John Woodroffe, on the other, folded in.

The book begins with a thorough definition of yoga and then an overview, and then its inescapable conjoining with Hinduism. This is "Part One: Foundations." Then Feuerstein looks at "Pre-Classical Yoga" and overviews the entire Vedic tradition including the yoga of the earliest Upanishads, culminating in its expression in the Bhagavad Gita. Then in "Part Three: Classical Yoga," he comes to Patanjali and the yoga of the eight limbs, the famous yoga of the aphorisms. Part Four is "Post-Classical Yoga" from the later Yoga-Upanishads from the Middle Ages in which the focus is on bhakti, technique, mantra and meditation. It is here that Western readers will find much that is new, or at least not readily available in English. And it is here that a non-dualistic yogic philosophy (as opposed to the dualism of Patanjali) holds sway. Part Five is on tantrism and "Yoga as Spiritual Alchemy." It is in this last part that the so-called "subtle body," with its nadis and pranas, its cakras ("psychoenergetic centers") and the mysterious serpent power of kundalini, is explored in depth. Here too we have the ritualistic practice of the five forbidden things from tantra yoga, the infamous "left-handed path." Here is Feuerstein's take: "Practitioners of the left-hand path ()--vâma means both "left" and "woman"--know they are breaking profound social taboos, and their only justification for their conduct is that their goal is not sensual gratification but self-transcendence in the context of bodily existence." (p. 484)

To me--and I have studied and practiced yoga for 28 years--yoga is first and foremost a profound psychology, a way of life that has evolved along with the human experience, from the prehistory to today, a guide on how to live that has come down to us in part (only in part: so much has been lost) as a philosophic and religious tradition. Feuerstein's book is at once a great reference and a heart-felt exposition on the power of yoga to transcend this world in which we are enveloped in the "food sheath," where we are both the eater and the eaten, but with our eyes on the stars.

The book includes numerous black and white illustrations, passages from yogic works, and an extensive, selected bibliography. There is a chronology, a glossary and an excellent index.

--Dennis Littrell, author of "Yoga: Sacred and Profane (Beyond Hatha Yoga)"

Excellent Encyclopedic Work by a True Scholar and Practition
By Lori Sandler
Being a long time student of various yoga and related traditions, I humbly bow to the author for his vast and accurate knowledge of the subject. This work gives exceptionally unbiased, clear and insightful treatment of the diverse spiritual traditions. A result, I believe, of open mindedness and deep understanding. This is extremely rare for works in this category. Actually, there are no other books like it, period. The volume, clearly the distillate of many years of diligent study and practice, contains abosolutely no fluff, and everything is backed up by authoritative materials. In one easily understandable reference work, it makes available the many wisdom teachings spanning a great time period and geographical locations. Not only does it provide a bird's eye view of this vast and complex field, it also provides a rich historical context, which greatly aids our understanding. If I had access to the information contained in this book years ago, it would have saved me much grief and helped me to progress further and sooner. A must read for any serious student on the spiritual path.

Incredible book and incredible value. Fills in a lot of missing pieces for people.
By Patrick D. Goonan
When this book came in the mail and I started looking through it I was absolutely thrilled. It provides a great overview of the yoga tradition by a scholar-practioner with over 30 years experience studying and practicing. I have similar books that cost much more than this and they are good, but not necessarily as readable as this volume.

In brief, this book covers the scope of yoga and lays a foundation for an overview of the various branches of yoga. In talks about the history of the yoga tradition and does so in an engaging way, even if you aren't a big history buff. In my opinion, it provides just the right amount of detail.

This title also looks at the yoga tradition within Buddhism and the relationship between Buddhism and Hinduism. It also helps the reader to sort out all the various sacred texts, how they are related to each other and even provides sample readings.

The treatment of the classic yoga, the post-classical period and the flowering of the tradition is interesting and informative. It also talks about tantric traditions and modern movements and scholars such as Sri Aurobindo. The author also provides a great framework and organizes all of this information in an easy and enjoyable read.

If you have ever been confused over the historical details of the various yoga traditions, the overlap or relationships between them, this text will set you on the right path. It also has an excellent glossary, comprehensive index and an above average bibilography. For about $20.00 this book delivers a lot of value. I recommend it without reservation to anyone interested in the evolution of yoga at any level of practice.

Worldbuilding is complete, Characters are not
By K. Imani
After finishing the book a few nights ago, I’m still unsure as to what to think of it. There were parts of Friesner’s novel that I enjoyed and then there were parts where I just kept reading because I knew I had to write this review. One of the reasons why I think I’m blasé about the novel is because the novel I read before this one left a mark on my heart, had me mourning that the story was over. With Spirit’s Chosen, I put the book down and finished cooking dinner. No sadness, no missing of characters or Friesner’s world, just done with the book, ready for the next.

As I thought about my ambivalence, I asked myself what caused this feeling? Was it the characters? Was it the world? Was it the style of prose Friesner use? What it the story? What?

And then I realized, there were two main aspects of this novel that rubbed me the wrong way and the main one is the main character, Himiko. Now, I’m pleased that Friesner chose to write a character of color, specifically of Japanese descent, and set the novel in a historical time period. On the other hand, Himiko annoyed me a bit because she is a bit of a Mary-Sue. She is a like-able character and the reader wants to root for her to succeed, but she doesn’t have any faults. None what so ever. She always is able to maintain a positive attitude despite what is thrown at her and is always able to come up with the proper solution that succeeds every time. In fact, at one point when she experiences an obstacle and starts to finally have a breakdown, after she tells Daimu (her love interest) why she is upset, she ends up comforting him! I was completely taken out of the story at that point because it was so unrealistic. I realize that Friesner is trying to promote a strong female character, a warrior, but for a reader to connect, to really believe in the character, she must exhibit some faults or else the reader doesn’t truly trust the main character. I feel like Friesner got so caught up in her sweeping historical fiction with a strong female character that she forgot to give her character, and others, more depth.

Spirit’s Chosen is a sequel to Friesner’s Spirit’s Princess but the way she structures the novel allows one to read this novel without having read the first. Friesner gives tidbits here and there of relevant information, as needed, from the first novel and it doesn’t overwhelm Spirit’s Chosen. Friesner definitely did her history, and visited Japan which she writes about in her afterward, and this level of attention and detail comes across beautifully. The world that Friesner creates is very real and believable, and is what makes the novel somewhat interesting.

Recommendation: If you like epic historical fiction with balanced characters, I’d say skip this one, but if not and you just love historical fiction for the romance of another era, then this one is for you.

Everyone Loves a Shaman
By Sylvia McIvers
Slow, slow opening. Coming home to find the clan has been enslaved - but there aren't any captors around. Life goes on as usual, except with a lot of dead young men and very little food. But we get through winter OK, no one actually dies of hunger.

Then Hikimo goes off on her quest to save Baby Brother. Not everyone else - she's just a young girl, she can't save everyone by herself - but Her own brother is special. Hikimo's best friend goes off with her, because Hikimo can't fight her way out of a paper bag. She can lie, though. And she can be a good shaman and heal people.

Then she gets captured. And the prison guard wants to rape her. Then she gets taken to the house of the chieftain who wanted to marry her (until she slopped garbage over him) and he has no interest in sleeping with her. Even though he treats his own wife like garbage. Whuh? How did that happen?

Then she goes to the shrine, where the shaman falls in love with her, and takes no steps to ensure she loves him back. The other shaman courts her as if she were a free woman, as well.

The chieftain's bitchy mother falls in love with Hikimo when the baby-boy she predicted came true. Everyone Loves Hikimo! Except for the chieftan. And even he comes around later, which is even harder for me to believe than the shaman's not 'insisting' that the slave-girl indulge his true love.

Moderately good book, not as good as her other series.

I thought that this book was very good. It made me want to keep reading to find out what happens next. There are some parts that are a little slow but most of the book was wonderful and made me want to keep reading. There were some parts that I couldn't even put the book down I had to find out what was going to happen to Kaya. Most of the book is very upbeat and happy but there are a few parts that are a little sad.
I found Kaya to be a very interesting character that made me want to learn more about her. In the beginning of the book you are not fully sure of how she will turn out but in the end you will love her and be on the edge of your seat as you are reading about her adventure against the wolf clan.

Another visit to the community of Whispering Wind
By C. M. Chen
In a grocery store in New York City, Heather Reed gazes at her wailing child and realizes, after three years, that she can no longer accept the extraordinary responsibility of single parenthood. As she tells her irrepressible daughter, Angelique, they are going to find her father. Their search leads them to Whispering Wind, Wyoming where an unsuspecting Todd Winston now resides. Todd has been promoted to producer of "Megan's World", a successful home fashions network. After relocating from New York, Todd has just about accepted Whispering Wind as his home though he indulges himself with frequent trips back to the city. He's a man who is detailed, organized, and basically a control freak due to a tragic accident which took place when he was seventeen years old.
From the time of their reunion, Todd and Heather find themselves still strongly attracted to each other and marginally as much friends as they used to be. But Todd finds it hard to look at Angel and not remember his consuming sense of guilt. A sense of guilt that was hammered home years ago by his father. He is afraid that being in contact with any child below the age of four will result in that child's death due to his irresponsibility.
Sherryl Woods has created a wonderful, if fictional, community. Whispering Wind is full of colorful and supportive characters. Todd and Heather are both helped along by friends and help their friends in turn. The author fully illustrates the fact that this is a close-knit community. The narrative style is light and engaging and makes for a good and easy read. I gradually came to like Todd and Heather but would have liked more access into their internal thoughts than was allowed. A prime example: if I had known what was behind his fear of caring for babies, I would have been able to understand and even sympathize with his harsh treatment of Heather and Angel at times. As it was, I did enjoy the story overall and loved revisiting the community I was drawn to in the prequel. And in the end, I was glad to experience and believe in Todd, Heather, and Angel's happy ending.

Beautiful story
By A Customer
Actress Heather Reed can no longer deal with her precocious or is it devilish three year old daughter Angelique. The straw that broke Heather's back was the tantrum in the Manhattan store. Desperate for help, especially some quality time away from her beloved brat, Heather decides to visit Angel's biological father, Todd Winston in Wyoming.

When Todd left for Wyoming to produce Megan's World, he had no idea he sired a child. Now, he finds his ex-girlfriend in town accompanied by a child who looks like a female Todd. Heather tells him the truth, sending Todd into a deep panic as he looks at the child like she is an unwanted virus. Heather tries to learn why he has such a deep aversion to children. The townsfolk of Whispering Wind play matchmaker, trying to bring the two of them together. As Todd and Heather rekindle their love, she wonders if he will accept Angel as part of a package deal.

ANGEL MINE is a humorous contemporary romance. The lead charcaters are a warm duo and Todd's reaction to his daughter is both sad and amusing. However it is the eccentric townsfolk that make this novel worth reading. Their reaction to the New York invasion (also see AFTER TEX) is priceless. Sherryl Woods known for her romance and mystery novels has written a fabulous romantic romp in returning her readers to wonderful wacky Whispering Wind, Wyoming.

Read it in 1 day!
By Sherry
I found this book in a big box at a garage sale and paid a quarter for it. I came home and began to read it, not able to put it down, I finished it very early in the morning! I really loved the quick pace and snapping writing. My husband was amused to see me laughing while I read, especially since I had just been complaining about 3 other books I also bought and just knew I could not read after the first few paragraphs. I don't have the time or patience to try to figure out what author's, with too much time on their hands, are trying to say as they over-describe objects with obscure comparison. Sherryl Woods just found a new fan, I'm already thinking about which of her books to read next! The actual story was not as addictive as her style of writing, clear, fast-paced and very entertaining!

Drawing on his more than four decades of experience in congregational leadership, Bullard offers not just another process for congregational redevelopment. He learns from the past to take congregations on a spiritual journey that is open-ended, custom-made, and locally owned. His focus is on capacity building in each congregation, calling for a narrative approach to futuring in the life of congregations that responds to new things God is seeking to do in and through members of the congregation.

Must read for congregational change agents
By Shane Nixon
I read George's book and must say that if you are working to move a church or congregation towards change, this book needs to be on your shelf. The examples are rich, the theory is deep, and the total content is beyond anything you've seen before. More than a repackaging of the same old "church growth" ideas, this book encourages church and congregational leaders to think beyond the same ole same old. I highly reccomend this book.

Congregations In Search of Their Potential
By Rev. Paul Dobberstein
Do you think your congregation is really living up to the potential God wishes it to have? If not, this book is for you!

Bullard uses insights from his 30+ years of experience in helping congregations seek and reach their potential to show a needed conterpoint to the various movements sweeping the church. This isn't health or growth. This is seeking potential.

Many different types of congregations exist today. We don't need to stereotype them, but to show functional models. Bullard does this well. He also includes coaching insights and congregational, and personal reflection questions in each chapter.

Some of his most useful materials come in his life cycle of the church and in his materials on the ministry types emphasized during some recent time periods in history.

Pursuing the Kingdom Potential of Your Congregation should be read by all congregations entering vacancy or interim periods. It should also be read by any congregation, pastor, or layperson contemplating making the church a better witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Resistance: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, by Israel Gutman

One of the few survivors of the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising, Holocaust scholar Gutman draws on dairies, personal letters, and underground press reports in this compelling, authoratative account of a landmark event in Jewish history. Here, too, is a portrait of the vibrant culture that shaped the young fightersm whose inspired defiance would have far reaching implications for the Jewish people and the State of Isreal, founded exactly fifty years ago. Note:  Some of the photos and maps contained in the print edition of this book have been excluded from the e-book edition due to permissions issues.

From Publishers Weekly
The Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943, following Hitler's orders to annihilate the Jewish population of Poland's capital, pitted hundreds of poorly armed, starving Jews fighting to the death, in total isolation, against an overwhelming Nazi army. This superb, moving, richly informative history of the uprising, which was led by an underground resistance group, should erase the stereotype of the passive Jewish victim. Himself a survivor of the battle, Gutman ( The Jews of Warsaw ), a history professor at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, uses contemporaneous diaries, letters, underground press articles, survivors' accounts, poems and Nazi documents to create a vivid picture of daily life in the ghetto, and of temporary alliances forged among Jewish fighting factions torn by ideological rifts. He also illuminates contacts between Jewish partisans and the Polish underground and fills in the cultural background by delineating Warsaw's vibrant pre-war Jewish community. Photos.

From Library Journal
Gutman, a survivor of the Holocaust and a scholar on the subject, here traces the events that led the peaceful Warsaw Jewry into active resistance against the Nazis. In the 1920s and 1930s, Warsaw had Europe's largest and most vibrant Jewish community. After Warsaw fell to Hitler, the Jewish underground formed in order to preserve the humanity of the Jews. They ran a clandestine press, established an uneasy alliance with the Polish underground, and eventually armed themselves while plotting retaliatory strategies. Gutman explores commonly held beliefs, e.g., that the Jews waited too long to defend themselves and that many did not believe reports of a Final Solution. The facts of the book are supported by excerpts from diaries, letters, newspapers, rare documents, and photographs. Gutman presents a dramatic and memorable picture of the ghetto. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.
Mary Salony, West Virginia Northern Community Coll. Lib., Wheeling

From Kirkus Reviews
A richly documented short history of the Warsaw Ghetto by Gutman (History/Hebrew University), who is a death-camp survivor and the director of the research center at Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust memorial. There are many well-chosen citations from diaries, underground papers, and other rare documents--along with several maps and photographs (some previously unpublished). The title is the book's major flaw, as if the publisher grasped for the few moments of heroic resistance in an account dominated by hopeless victimization. Gutman himself criticizes the Israelis for giving disproportionate play to armed revolt when commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto. The shots heard 'round the occupied world are first fired more than halfway through the book. The harrowing entries and statistics describing life in the Warsaw Ghetto, the largest of the typhus traps carefully planned by the Nazis, make clear that resistance was impeded by the Germans' use of Jewish police (often assimilated or converted Jews) and by the deadening effects of slow starvation and strategically strewn crumbs of hope (``those who cooperate and work will survive''). Gutman moves from the painful details to the larger, ideological picture, such as Himmler exhorting his troops to battle the Soviets, aka the ``Jewish'' Bolsheviks, for the Aryan world ``as we have conceived it: beautiful, decent, socially equal.'' Only after the ghetto is largely depleted from evacuations to the death camps do we hear poet and partisan Abba Kovner ring out with ``Arise! Arise with your last breath!'' The final weeks of armed struggle are brought to life with excerpts from dismayed German generals (referring to Jews as the ``enemy''), rival Jewish militias, and distantly admiring Poles. As the index and bibliography indicate, one would have to read dozens of German, Jewish, and Polish accounts to get what Gutman has gleaned for us here. An essential one-volume read for the layman or undergraduate. -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A Broad-Based but ZOB-Centered History of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
By Jan Peczkis
This work [review based on 1994 edition] begins with Jewish life in prewar Poland, and with Warsaw Jewry being one of the largest Jewish communities in the world. It then proceeds to the German-Nazi conquest of Poland, followed by the early German occupation, the eventual shipments of Warsaw's Jews to the gas chambers of Treblinka, the growing decision of the remaining Jews to resist, the preparations, the January 1943 resistance, and then the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising itself. Maps and many photographs are included.

Gutman sees the Nazi extermination plan against Jews not as something that went back to the early days of Nazi ideology and power, but something that developed gradually, and wasn't decided on until about mid-1941. (p. 71). Simultaneously, Jewish thought evolved from seeing Nazism as just another persecution of Jews to belated realization of its unfolding exterminatory policies.

This book includes seldom-mentioned information. For instance, Gutman praises Polish smugglers for bringing food to the starving ghetto, notwithstanding the fact that most of them did it for money. (p. 92). He also discusses members of the Polish Underground, notably Iwanski (e. g., p. 169) and Wolinski (e. g., p. 171), and their involvement in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

Despite its comprehensiveness and easy readability, the book has a number of shortcomings. For one, while it mentions the ZZW (Z.Z.W.), it overemphasizes the ZOB (Z.O.B.). Gutman acknowledges the fact that almost none of the ZOB fighters had any military training whatsoever. (p. 204). (In contrast, the ZZW offered stronger resistance, as it had experienced soldiers and several hundred firearms provided by the Polish Underground.)

Unfortunately, Gutman hints at the myth of the Polish Underground being well-armed. (p. 173). As a historian, he should know better. For proof of the shortage of arms, consider another bloody event at this time (Spring 1943). The Ukrainian fascist-separatist OUN-UPA was conducting genocide against the Poles of prewar eastern Poland, and only a handful of Polish villages had even a half-adequate supply of arms for defense.

Gutman repeats his rejection of the authenticity of early Jewish-Polish Underground contacts, as reported by Bor Komorowski, the Polish Underground leader. (pp. 171-172). In actuality, the events are compatible with the veracity of Bor Komorowski. (see the Peczkis review of Forgotten Holocaust).

The author is careful to avoid anti-Polish generalizations (e. g., p. 39. 174), but then he turns around and lays some whoppers. He rattles off a number of unsubstantiated assertions, such as the one about some Poles being more upset about the destruction of property than of the Jews during the Uprising. (p. 232). He discusses the Polish-Underground AK (A.K.) group of Captain Joseph Pszenny and its unsuccessful attempt to explode a hole in the Ghetto wall. (pp. 217-218). Without a shred of supporting evidence, he dismisses it as "improvised", a "symbolic gesture", and something done essentially for public relations. What a low blow!--especially recounting the fact that Poles died for Jews in this operation.

Concise and important work on a major historical theme!
By Matthew Sarelson
A to-the-point explanation of what happened and why. And more importantly, 'how' did a group of relatively unarmed, untrained captives lead a military revolt against the Nazi war machine?

Very interesting
By Inger Watts
I find this to be one of the most interesting books that I have read about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943. I really liked the way Professor Gutman told us about the events, and at the same time explained why and gave us additional information. I made a lot of notes while reading this book.

And I have to disagree with another reviewer, because I don't find it boring at all.

Welcome to The Beginner Guitarist!
This book has been born out of 20 years of teaching experience. Although specifically designed as a teacher’s aid, it can also be used for independent study.
Topics like posture, tuning and phrasing are not prescribed, being left to the judgement of the teacher. With the exception of right and left-hand fingering advice, this approach is used throughout the series. The entire series has the goal of being a measured and progressive tutor. Ideas are usually introduced one at a time to avoid overloading the student. Basic right-hand technique is the foundation of the early part of book one. The ability to strike the string effectively and produce a clear sound is paramount. Left-hand technique is then addressed with notes on the top three strings in first position. Use of the thumb is also covered briefly. Light relief comes in the form of small amounts of glissando and percussive work. Dynamics are then introduced onto a stable base of notes, followed by accidentals (key of G). The book is rounded off with chords and arpeggios, giving the student a chance to ‘swap seats’ with the teacher and play the role of accompanist. Elsewhere the teacher may accompany the pupil with the suggested chords, either playing the root note or the full voicings as notated. A daily practice session for the completion of book one, extra repertoire and other helpful information are all available at
www.thebeginnerguitarist.com.
About the author: Nigel Tuffs is an instrumental teacher with more than 20 years of experience in all areas of guitar teaching. Originally a member of several rock bands he completed an honours degree at the Colchester Institute, specialising in composition and performance, and has since worked extensively as a chamber musician, in guitar ensembles, as an accompanist and also as an educator.

Her life's gamble never seem to strike back at her, but as time goes on, they will eventually catch up with her. Watching as her life collapses, she learns what it's really all about.
