A bewitching play by Jez Butterworth, author of the global smash-hit Jerusalem. Premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2012.

On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run, a man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin where he has come for the fly-fishing since he was a boy. But she's not the only woman he has brought here – or indeed the last...

'A delicately unfolding puzzle... all of it is wrapped in marvelous language... extraordinary.' The Times

'One of the best productions of the year... a magnetically eerie, luminously beautiful psychodrama.' Time Out

'Strange, eerie, tense... Butterworth possesses a singular talent.' Guardian

Review
"The River is like a subtly crafted piece of chamber music. It is teasing, haunting and hushed. It is also damnably difficult to write about, as there is a mystery at its heart that I must not reveal." — Charles Spencer, Telegraph

FIVE STARS: "One of the best productions of the year... a magnetically eerie, luminously beautiful psychodrama.” — Andrzej Lukowski, Time Out (London)

"The River is subtle, sleek and dark. Here is a sense of the mysterious and of kinship with others long gone. It is perhaps about time and eternity, about that spot on the river that, while always the same, is always changing. A wonderful play, glinting and elusive as a fish." -Sarah Hemming, Financial Times

FOUR STARS: “Strange, eerie, tense and, on a single viewing, slightly unfathomable. The play kept me on tenterhooks.” – Michael Billington, The Guardian

FOUR STARS: “Lyrical and tricksy, occasionally droll and ultimately desolating, this intimate three-hander unfolds like a tantalising cross between a piece of deeply felt poetry and a sleight-of-hand puzzle.” – Paul Taylor, The Independent

FOUR STARS: “Butterworth’s dialogue flips between wryly humorous, naturalistic exchanges and more stylistically heightened passages… a disturbing slow burn.” – Kate Bassett, The Independent on Sunday

Ambiguously perfect!
By Reader
It took me a third time before I grasped what might be the central mystery of the play. Can't reveal that now, but some of the reviews have hinted at it.

The language is poetic ( but almost deceiving) and the atmosphere is tense and mysterious even if the language is almost lyrical. The characters are strongly etched although there is a sense of ambiguity about them. One must be careful to read the play slowly, not just to savor the poetic and metaphoric language but also to uncover or discover the nuances in the characterizations that lead to its unusual ending.

Looking forward to seeing this staged on Broadway!

Is it love? Is it pursuit of an ideal. Is it Real?
By Janet White
The River is a trip through your own mind and experiences. It is almost impossible to write a review without giving away the spoilers other than it concerns a Man who loves to fish bringing a woman he loves to his cabin for the first time except that the woman changes into "The Other Woman" and back again. Is it present time? Is it memory? Is it imagination? Is it horror? Are they different facets of the same woman? Is it love? Is it pursuit of an ideal? You will want to read and re-read and may change your mind frequently. If you get a chance, go see the play, but definitely read the story.

Beautiful Language, layered with metaphors and questions
By Kathleen McCallum
This play has layers of meaning that will motivate several readings to investigate. Is it a parable about a lost love or a missed opportunity? Perhaps. It's thought provoking and beautifully written.
