An excellent houseplant reference

This well organized and informative book covers 160 houseplants. Arranged in 3 sections - "Blooming houseplants", "Foliage houseplants" and 'Houseplant Care," the tops of the pages are color-coded for fast access. Plants are listed by their botanical name but you can look up their common names in the index or a Botanical/Common Name Cross Reference chart in the back of the book. Almost all plants are given a 2 page spread which includes a description, a chart with specifications indicating light levels, temperature, fertilizer, water and soil needs, repotting advice, longevity, propagation techniques, selection and display tips. A troubleshooting guide provides characteristics of what to look for if a plant is in trouble and what you should do about it. Plants with various varities, like bromeliads, bulbs, cacti, orchids, ferns and palms are covered in more expanded sections. The color photos (included for each plant) are outstanding. The final chapter, "Houseplant Care," covers aspects such as containers, fertilizers, insect pests, propagation, plant characteristics and identification tips, terrariums and watering techniques. The semi-hard cover and flexible binding make the book easy to flip through and the attractive lay-out and page colorings make this book a joy to use. A must-have reference for serious houseplant growers!

Great for Beginner or Advanced

Each plant merits a color photo, making them easy to spot the one you want. The care instructions include light temperature, fertilizer, water, soil, repotting, longevity, propagation, selections (varieties), and display tips. The plants that are particularly easy-to-care-for are marked with an icon so beginners can spot them.

In the back is a cross reference with the botanical name and the common name.

A great resource for beginners

Until recently my houseplant experience was limited to two spider plants and a ficus, both of which I managed to kill in about a year. I actually credit the plants for holding on so long, since they got horrible light, no fertilizer, and a little water every other month.

I recently decided to give it another go, but I was fairly nervous because I didn't know anything about how to take care of houseplants in general, let alone the special requirements of the commonly available varieties. I checked out several books before settling on this one, which is a good compromise between encyclopedic coverage of different plants and practical advice about plant care. Each of the 160+ plants in the book has at least one page of information and at least one full-color photo (sometimes more). The entry for each plant gives some basic information, specific requirements and things to watch out for, and a short troubleshooting FAQ. The book is divided into three parts, on flowering houseplants, non-flowering houseplants, and houseplant care. The final section on houseplant care goes into a lot more depth on just about every topic under the sun, including soil, light, water, fertilizer, seasons, training, propagation, leaching, repotting (and potting up, and top-dressing), and has a lot of helpful illustrations to get you through. At the end of the book there is a big list of resources, including plant clubs and sources for more in-depth information.

Right now I have 17 houseplants, all chosen without benefit of this book, just because they looked nice. But they're all in here. The book is NOT comprehensive, though--160 species is a lot but it is hardly exhaustive, and your local garden center or home supply warehouse probably has plants that aren't covered here. Still, almost all the common species and varieties are in here, and it is very nice to have instructions and tips that are specific to each plant. If you have some plants that aren't in here, you might want to pair this with a more taxonomically comprehensive book, such as The House Plant Expert or one of the houseplant encyclopedias.

I should add that the book is very well written, interesting, engaging, and accessible. I find myself picking it up to look up one thing and an hour later I'm still reading.

Oh, and all my new plants are doing great. Mostly thanks to this book.

fine reprint of a late 1990s second chance at love anthology

"Heading Home" by Janet Dailey. In New Mexico, Trooper the K9 and his two associates know immediately the assignment once their human pet rancher Josh Reynolds meets his neighbor Kate Summers. However, Kate has been burned by love once before and Josh is wary of that emotion so Trooper has his work cut out to bring these neighboring ranchers together.

"The Journey" by Fern Michaels. Twelve years ago Matt Starr jilted Maggie Osborne Harper to make a fortune. He succeeded in making billions, but knows he made the mistake of a lifetime when he dumped his beloved. Now he wants a second chance, but once burned.

A group of well written books I couldn't put down in one book and by different authors. A great book to enjoy the work of autho

I purchased this book because I actually found something written by Fern Michaels that I had not read yet.  She is my favorite author and I am usually preordering her books long before release date so they will be automatically downloaded and waiting for me the day they come out so it is very rare to find one from years ago that I didn't know of.  This was a real treat for me. Her book in Homecoming was The Journey.  It was about a woman named Maggie who had been stood up at the alter on her wedding day.  No phone call, no letter, no sending a message, although I guess Matt did by not showing up it made it clear I am not marrying you today.  He does later send her parents a check for $35,000. as a reimbursement for the money they spent, still no I'm sorry or anything for Maggie.  12 years go by and she decides to finally send him a letter letting him know just what she thinks of him and returns his $35,000.  Me personally I would not have waited 12 years to tell him what I thought of him and I would  be fine with him having a clear conscious because he refunded the money her parents had spent.  I would have kept the money, it is not like she was a wealthy woman.  Anyway little does she know, nor does he that she will be the survivalist guide who is going to be taking him and a group of his employees on one of the hardest terrains that only 2 people have been able to complete.  When she sees his name as well as the name of who she thinks is his wife on her registration list for her group she is shaken to the core.  Her planning of revenge and humiliation go into full gear, she knows his fears.  She was afforded the knowledge he would be there.  He gets surprised when coming face to face after 12 years and realizes real quick a woman scorned wants to get even.  In usual Fern Michaels style things are not always as they seem and other characters also have surprises that come there way and people can be thrown together like it or not by people or things you would never expect.   I thoroughly enjoyed the story and you will have to read to see how it all plays out.  

This has many engaging and well written stories or books within a book in it.  I enjoyed them all.  However the one titled Rockabye Inn, which was not written by my favorite writer, was the best in the book.  I will definitely be checking out some of the other books written by Deborah Bradford to see if they are as wonderfully written and surprises in almost every page like Rockabye Inn was.  When I read Fern Michaels it is like no you don't need sleep because I can't put the book down wanting to see what is going to happen next.  I felt the same way with Rockaway Inn.  You will enjoy it, at times be confused because you want to know what this connection is but in the end so surprised because it is a ending you never saw coming

My New Favorite Book on Leadership

We are definitely not facing a shortage of books on leadership. These titles have sections all their own in the big bookstores, they line the airport bookstalls, and they appear on the bestseller lists with predictable regularity. Much like books on prayer or books on parenting and a select handful of other topics, it appears that there simply cannot be too many of them. Every leader wants to lead better just as every prayer wants to pray better. Readers could be forgiven if they feel skeptical that there is anything much left to say about leadership.

And yet, as Albert Mohler proves in The Conviction to Lead, not every trail has been pursued to its end. He begins this book with a warning to the reader that is equally a challenge to himself as author: "My goal is to change the way you think about leadership. I do not aim merely to add one more voice to the conversation; I want to fundamentally change the way leadership is understood and practiced." No one can accuse him of aiming too low! Remarkably, at least in my assessment, he achieves what he sets out to do, making The Conviction to Lead a uniquely important book.

In the opening pages Mohler surveys the vast leadership industry and points out that in all the useful things that have been said about leadership, the central problem "is a lack of attention to what leaders believe and why this is central." His burden is "to redefine Christian leadership so that it is inseparable from passionately held beliefs, and to motivate those who are deeply committed to truth to be ready for leadership. I want to see a generation arise that is simultaneously leading with conviction and driven by the conviction to lead. The generation that accomplishes this will set the world on fire."

At the heart of the kind of leadership Mohler advocates is what he calls "convictional intelligence." This is not an innate kind of intelligence, but one that must be developed by diving deeply into the truth of the Bible and learning to think like a Christian. It is, in its essence, Christian maturity. "For the Christian leaders, those convictions must be drawn from the Bible and must take the shape of the gospel. Our ultimate conviction is that everything we do is dignified and magnified by the fact that we were created for the glory of God. We were made for his glory, and this means that each one of us has a divine purpose. The Christian leader finds passion in the great truths of the Christian faith, and especially in the gospel of Jesus Christ."

The leader must be relentless in his pursuit of truth and the application of truth to his life and his organization. Through twenty-five short chapters Mohler describes the kind of character that ought to mark the leader and looks at specific skills, habits and intellectual exercises that can make all the difference between a mediocre leader and a great one. He writes about the importance of gaining and maintaining credibility, of developing the intellect, of making wise decisions, and even of facing the new realities of a digital world.

One of the most compelling aspects of The Conviction to Lead is its semi-biographical nature, which is exactly as it ought to be. Mohler has faced great leadership challenges, the greatest of which was undoubtedly being called--while he was only in his young thirties--to lead one of America's most important seminaries. While he draws many examples from history, and especially British history, he also draws many lessons from his own successes and failures.

But what I appreciate most is that Mohler takes the massive amount of scholarship and popular-level writing on leadership, extracts what is most valuable, and then sets it all in the context of Scripture. From the first page to the last, he is applying Scripture to leadership, crafting an understanding that is thoroughly and completely biblical. This book is truly gospel-centered; the gospel is not appended to the book, but at its heart.

I have read all of Mohler's books and I am convinced that this is his best. Each of his previous books has been helpful in its own way, but they have generally been repurposed sermons or blog posts and have carried the weight of mixed media. The Conviction to Lead has all the marks of an original work, oozing with wisdom and dripping with passion. This is Mohler in his most natural habitat, doing what he does best. If you are a pastor or elder, if you are an owner or CEO, if you are in any form of leadership, I am convinced that this book will transform the way you lead. I highly recommend that you read it.

Helpful, but perhaps a bit over-hyped.

Dr. Albert Mohler is qualified to speak authoritatively on many subjects, but there are perhaps few he is more qualified to address than leadership. For that reason when he writes a book on leadership it is safe to assume that your time will be well spent reading it. The Conviction to Lead is precisely that; a book on leadership written by Dr. Mohler. While it is a book on leadership its design is to be something other than one more volume to add to the mountainous pile of works dedicated to the perfection of leadership skills. "I want to fundamentally change the way leadership is understood and practiced," proclaims Dr. Mohler in the opening paragraph of this book. What this book then promises to be is a seasoned leader's attempt to change our understanding and application of leadership at a foundational level.

One would assume that after all the books, lectures, interviews, and conferences aimed at perfecting the art of leadership that the demand for leadership resources would be dwindling, but in fact the exact opposite seems to be true. The experts keep writing books, and the would-be leaders keep buying them. Why haven't we all reached the peak of leadership refinement? What's the problem? "The problem is a lack of attention to what leaders believe and why this is central," Dr. Mohler concludes (italics in original). The contention of this book is that leaders are failing to lead because they have no passion about the fundamental beliefs of those they are seeking to lead, or as the title suggests, they lack conviction. What we are experiencing today in churches, universities, businesses, and broader movements is leaders who are not believers and believers who cannot lead. So, Mohler's hope for his book is to "redefine Christian leadership so that it is inseparable from passionately held beliefs, and to motivate those who are deeply committed to truth to be ready for leadership."

This is a vital perspective on leadership especially for Christians looking to set themselves apart from the lemming like mentality of the broader culture. It would be an exaggeration to suggest that the church is facing unprecedented opposition, but it is no stretch to say that opposition to the historically held beliefs of the church is escalating rapidly. Those who lack conviction about the truth of God's Word will be swept away by the pressure of cultural conformity. At the same time those with conviction but no determination to lead in the fight against the erosion of our beliefs will be of little consequence. If ever there was a time to sound the call for leaders to be fueled by conviction, and for true believers to be infused with the skills and determination to lead it is now.

Mohler's book does that, and does it well. He is convincing in his argument that the great flaws of today's leader are a lack of conviction or a misplaced conviction. His call to identify ourselves in the story of God's unfolding plan of redemption and to do so with authenticity is compelling. Using death to set the importance of leading from our convictions in high relief is quite effective. Only when we drive our convictions deep into the heart of our organization or movement does our contribution live on after our death.
However, the quality of this book's chapters varied widely from very good to almost completely useless. In general I believe the beginning and ending of the book to be the essential parts, specifically chapters 1-6 and 23-25. The rest in the middle read to me like a series of blog posts turned book chapters, which draw as their source material varying degrees of Scripture, Peter Drucker, and Dr. Mohler's personal experience. There are certainly helpful insights to be gleaned even from the middle portion of the book, but they were hardly unique and certainly would not "fundamentally change the way leadership is understood and practiced."

I would recommend this book. The opening and closing sections are remarkable. However, I would not hype this book. The middle is much of the same old stuff when it comes to books on leadership.

Will help you become the leader God has called you to be

Are you a reluctant leader? Or do lack convictions, yet pursue leadership anyway? Al Mohler will help you become one of the rounded leaders the church so desperately needs
This book grabbed my attention early on with its bold claim,

"Let me warn you right up front--my goal is to change the way you think about leadership. I do not aim merely to add one more voice to the conversation; I want to fundamentally change the way leadership is understood and practiced"

Having found this book hard to put down, I really do think it lives up to its promise. I would encourage every leader to read this book. Now, before you rule yourself out, everybody is a leader of some kind, and it is not wrong to aspire to be a better leader in the future.

Why are so many of us afraid of being leaders, and shy away from it? Is it just a godly humility? I think that may be some of it, after all who wants to follow a Christian leader who is eagerly seeking advancement for themselves? But at the same time, if the call of God comes (and this is often expressed through others) for you to take up a leadership role, it is important not to turn it down too hastily. Moses' example as the reluctant prophet is not given for to us to copy. But the good news is that God was gentle with Moses, and helped him to accept the role that God had for him. God is still the same today, and will help you also if you are facing a challenge that you are not sure you are fit for. The truth is that none of us are really capable of fulfilling the leadership roles that are so needed in the church today, as Paul puts it "who is equal to such a task?" (2 Corinthians 2:16, NIV). But God makes us able. He does this through, among other things, the wisdom of others. And so we come to learn from Al Mohler, a man who's leadership ability is evident and long-tested.

Mohler highlights the difference between mere management and leadership, but is eager to underline that while not all managers are leaders all leaders must be managers. He underlines the shocking lack of real leadership in our society today and stresses that,

"The church desperately needs . . . effective leaders who are authentically Christian-whose leadership flows out of their Christian commitment."

Mohler is also insightful in his razor-sharp diagnosis of a big problem in those who currently take charge of Christian endeavors. He sees them as divided into two cultures, groups which he terms the "believers" and the "leaders." He explains,

"The believers are driven by deep and passionate beliefs. They are heavily invested in knowledge, and they are passionate about truth . . . The problem is, many of them are not ready to lead. They have not thought much about leadership and are afraid that thinking too much about it will turn them into mere pragmatists, which they know they shouldn't be."

The chances are very good that if you are a regular reader of blogs you fall into this group. I certainly immediately recognized myself. Many pastors and others who are at the helm of Christian organizations are like this, and it is one reason why many of our organizations do not flourish and grow.

Mohler's second group didn't escape lightly, either,

"The Leaders, on the other hand, are passionate about leadership. They are tired of seeing organizations and movements die or decline, and they want to change things for the better. They look around and see dead and declining churches and lukewarm organizations. They are thrilled by the experience of leading and are ardent students of leadership wherever they can find it. They talk leadership wherever they go and are masters of motivation, vision, strategy, and execution. The problem is, many o them are not sure what they believe or why it matters. . .they lack a center of gravity in truth. They often ride one program after another until they run out of steam. Then they wonder, What now?"

Mohler has a grand goal, and I pray that it may be achieved in all of us as we read this book, he says,

"I want to turn the Believers into Leaders and the Leaders into Believers. My goal is to know the blocks out from under the current models of leadership and forge a new way. I stake my life on the priority of right beliefs and convictions, and I want to lead so that those very beliefs are perpetuated in others . . . My goal is to redefine Christian leadership so that it is inseparable from passionately held beliefs, and so motivate those who are deeply committed to truth to be ready for leadership."

The conviction to lead, at the same time a gloriously simple idea, yet Mohler is so right in saying that it is rare to find these two things entwined. I remember well stopping at this point as I read the book and praying something similar to this, "God make me a leader like this. Take away my reluctance, and help me to lead with conviction." You would do well to pray the same thing, and just go immediately and buy this book.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483, 1546) was a German monk, a theologian and church reformer, he is considered to be the founder of Protestantism. Luther was a professor of Bible at the University of Wittenberg when he posted his famous 95 Theses (1517). In addition to writing many books, Luther translated the Bible into German. Luther believed that salvation was only by faith in Jesus, unmediated by the church. He challenged papal authority by emphasing the Bible as the only source of religious authority and believed the church to be a priesthood of all believers.These ideas helped to inspire the Protestant Reformation and changed the course of Western civilization. He married Katharina von Bora thus initiating the practice of clerical marriage within Protestantism.- Publisher.

More Than A Tract . . .

This book is more than just a printing of Martin Luther's 1520 tract, "On Christian Freedom." It also includes selections regarding Christian freedom from Luther's Commentaries on the Scriptures and bits from Melanchthon's Loci Praecipui of 1559. There are helpful charts and illustrations, appendices, a glossary, and indices as well. There is even a 40 day "Reading Guide," complete with prayers, to lead the reader through a devotional perusal of the book.

This book will be helpful to any Christian seeking to navigate the waters of the relations between church and state when it comes to the subject of true freedom. In an age where voices from the right and the left muddy the political waters, Luther's clarity is truly refreshing. I bought a second copy for my college-age son, who is considering a career in politics. This book is worth the price, as well as the five stars this review gives it.

This book gives the reader a great understanding of what Christian Freedom is from Romans. The book is a series of writings by both Martin Luther and his partner Philip Melanchton. Martin Luther writes from a Minister's persective and Philip Melanchton writes from an educator's view point. I would recommend this book as a source book to understanding the reformation movement and theology that came from it.

This is a very helpful resource.

i like to use it for group study for a deeper understanding of God's Living Word. It is available on Kindle and I have downloaded it to my IPhone. I wouldn't hesitate to say most folks would gain a deeper understanding of our renewed relationship with God and His creation because of Christ, via this resource.

Understanding the coming Future

With the publication of Infinite Wealth, Barry Carter has established himself as a voice on the leading edge of the synergic paradigm.
The synergic paradigm is a place where you and I can be much more by working together than we could ever be by working separately. It is a place where we both can win. It is a place where we can create a win-win world in contrast to our present win/lose and often lose/lose world.
To solve the problems facing us (humanity) at the beginning of the 21st Century will require nothing less than our learning to work together. We must learn to Co-Operate. As Barry Carter explains in his Conclusion to Infinite Wealth:
"Our social institutions are dying. The pain we feel is the pain of death and birth simultaneously, the death of one civilization and the birth of a new one. We have entered a period in which the conservative person who does not take risks and needs stability has become the risk taker, the radical, and the gambler. It is a period in which the one who refuses to change will surely be the one who will lose the most in the coming years. There is no going back to the way things used to be. Back to the basics is a failed policy. The future has already begun, and the trend is clear.
"Starting today you must have a completely new outlook on life. You must be responsible. You can no longer depend on employers, unions, or governments to look out for your economic well-being, to provide you with a job, retirement, social security, health care, or a safety net.
"From this day forward you and your global network of partners are responsible for creating work and wealth for yourselves. If you have no network you have no security. All of the rules have changed. The guarantees and promises made to you by Industrial Age society are null and void and will be breached.
"The government and controlled economies have no choice. The power bestowed on them in the Industrial Age is slipping away--to you the individual supplier and customer. You the individual supplier and customer have no choice about accepting this responsibility. Mass victimization is no longer an option.
"Because most companies and employees are not seriously preparing, the number of companies that fail to make the transition could be extremely high. And there likely will be no unemployment benefits, no welfare, and no Social Security safety nets to catch those who fall. Your network is your security. As we stand poised on the edge of the greatest advancement and growth boom in history, we may stumble. Many may lose life, fortune, and standard of living and suffer tremendous hardship.
"We the individuals are the only ones who can make the change. Our corporate and political leaders do not have the power, vision, or intelligence to address the root causes. We the people must wake up from the Industrial Age sleep into which our factory-style schools, jobs, and governing system have lulled us. We must come out of our defined compartments and take responsibility. Our leaders cannot do what has to be done to correct our problems; this responsibility does not lie in their bureaus of specialty. It is not in their job descriptions.
"History has shown that real change usually comes only through crisis. The evidence shows that the crisis has begun. Tens of thousands are dead from the transition. We can possibly lessen or prevent the crisis if we align ourselves with the change. Today we have the technology, knowledge, power, ability, intelligence, and willingness to move faster toward win-win wealth creation.
"We must use intelligence to recognize what is occurring and move with the natural flow of things and with all deliberate speed. Either way, we have to make the transition. Meandering along simply means that we will pay a higher price in life, death, suffering, standard of living, and debt for our children. Meandering also risks complete collapse and possibly a dark millennium.
"The universe does not guarantee our standard of living or our survival. Perhaps our ancestors had to meander during periods of social transition because there was little or no precedent and little knowledge to use the precedents there were. We are fortunate because we can learn from their mistakes. As the late Carl Sagan said, "we see further because we stand on their shoulders" (1980).
"Becoming aligned with the coming change will allow us to avoid pain and to prosper. Let's get on with it. Let's stop the bleeding and start the fun, passion, and living! This will be the most fun and exciting time of our lives!"

In Infinite Wealth, he shares what he has learned and interprets his new understanding from his unique perspective developed from working as a cog in the wheel of our present Industrial Civilization. With this interpretation he has expanded the paradigm. As a synergic scientist working in the field for 27 years, I was surprised and delighted to learn more. Infinite Wealth has much to offer to both novice and expert.
This is an important book that explains the shape of the coming future. I recommend that every thinking human read it!

Survival Manifesto for Anyone with A Brain

First off, this book made the cut above another ten or so options on the fringes (the amazon reviews helped). It was a good choice. The author captures the essence of many other books as well as real-world experience with two fundamental points that every manager and every employee--including fast-food employees and others in "drone" jobs--needs to absorb: first, that the existing bureaucratization of the economy at every level is costing so much as to place those companies in jeopardy during the forthcoming economic shake-out, and second, that the sooner every individual begins the process of inventorying their personal capabilities and creating the networks for offering their personal services and knowledge via the Internet to all comers, the sooner they will be able to share in the profits associated with their direct individual contributions to the new economy.
The Department of Defense acquisition and contracting examples are especially shocking because they show, so credibly and in detail, how we have institutionalized multi-billion dollar waste.
This is a special book. It is by a practical man who has drawn very personal and transformative lessons from the school of hard knocks, and whose recounting of those lessons have value for anyone who expects to work for a living today and in the future. This is not a "get rich quick" book as much as it is a "get rich together or get left behind" book.

Infinite Wealth - Not exactly as you might think

Assuming that Futurists do their homework right, one should be able to act on their insights with a fair degree of confidence. With "Infinite Wealth" the same trending snapshots caught by noted futurists such as Faith Popcorn, Alvin Toffler and John Naisbitt take on more personalized dimensions. Barry Carter opens up before his readers doors to personal fulfillment, inviting them to join the driving forces of 21st Century new economies. If ever there was insider information worth its weight in gold, this is it.
Whether or not you are already a pioneer of the emerging Free Agent Nation, this book is a must read! If you are one of tens-of-millions sensing that the world you thought you knew is changing, not certain where you might fit in, I highly recommend "Infinite Wealth" as a beginner's guide to learning. But be forewarned! "Infinite Wealth" is not really about material wealth - per say, and if that is what you seek...well then maybe you should read the book. Otherwise, you may never know what hit you.
