Author and chaplain Thomas Shane tells dozens of stories of what it is like to provide crisis pastoral care to those caught in the grim and shocking realities of life. His book brings a balanced, spirituality-based perspective to the dead center of heartbreaking human experiences––violent crimes, homicides, natural disasters, automobile accidents, suicides, child abuse, and more. The author has worked with law enforcement professionals for 30 years, and his life has been dedicated to the victims and families involved in tragedies, and particularly to the needs of police officers. His words will both encourage and instruct other helping professionals to be better prepared to deal with their own and other’s needs during a crisis situation. The book gives readers an insider’s view, not theoretical. Dr. Shane candidly reveals his own struggles, doubts and fears, along with the courage, faith and hope that sustains his life and work. He even addresses the complex and challenging task of offering care and spiritual counsel to the perpetrators of crimes. He worked with families and victims in Oklahoma City, after the bombing, and at Ground Zero, New York A book for front-line law enforcement officers, EMTs & the chaplains who work with them, grief counselors, psychologists & local clergy, and anyone interested in true crime stories. • General principles for working with police • Helping people deal with guilt and find forgiveness • The real and personal risks in crisis intervention • Death notification • Chaplaincy and terrorism • What is the pastor’s authority, and what is not

Review
"Shane offers pastoral guidance and theological insight for others who might be called upon to care for God's people in the midst of crises. More than a how-to manual, it's an invitation to dynamically enter the stories shared." -- R. Robert Cueni, Lexington Theological Seminary, President (retired)
About the Author
Dr. Thomas Shane is a graduate of Yale and Vanderbilt Divinity School. For 30 years he was as a board certified hospital chaplain (APC) and a certified clinical pastoral educator (ACPE). His chaplaincy was divided between a psychiatric hospital and a large medical/trauma center. Dr. Shane also worked as a commissioned law enforcement officer, as a chaplain to several agencies. His work in law enforcement took him into the usually hidden worlds of violence, suffering, moral issues and disaster, and here he brought pastoral comfort where it was most needed but least expected.

For three decades a large part of my ministry has been as a police chaplain. And although the work I got paid for was as a hospital chaplain and as a certified supervisor with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, my time as a police chaplain was a large part of my life and just as dear to my heart. I believe that most parish clergy will likely experience many aspects of the kinds of crisis work I describe in this book, and I hope to tell the story of work with law enforcement in a way that enlightens this often hidden and inevitably sad world of work with cops. Other authors and other resources will do the important job of outlining the theory and practice of crisis intervention. My intent is to tell the story of these moments so that those who are called to do it will have a sense of what the reality is like. Theological education can get lost in a world of ideas. When this happens, theology is at risk of being dehumanized rather than grounded in the human condition. "Sin” is not a concept. It is the experience of Jack who thought his wife was having an affair. So he took his revolver from the glove box, walked into the living room where she was watching a movie with their children, and shot her to death. I am writing to describe the world of police chaplaincy. Many times when law enforcement personnel are needed, chaplains should have a presence as well. Local clergy are likewise involved, if not initially, then with the long term care of those who are affected by tragedy. In this book I describe a number of circumstances where those in law enforcement encounter people in great distress (legally, socially, psychologically, interpersonally, medically and spiritually). I then offer representative case stories where clergy are involved in providing pastoral care. All the incidents are true accounts of my work as a police chaplain, and in each case particular faith matters are dramatically revealed. Understandably some details have been altered to protect the privacy of those involved, yet each story is grounded in an authentic event

Real Stories, Great Read
By Jason Reynolds
As a police chaplain I have to say that this book is a great read with real stories that are helpful and shows the behind the scenes, practical side of chaplaincy, as well as the value of a chaplain who, through the power of presence is able to develop a trusting relationship with the officers he or she serves. I couldn't put this book down. I bought it at a book signing, took it home, and didn't go to bed until the book was finished. Really helpful information to me. Tom Shane has a wonderful writing style that tells a clear but picturesque story. After my wife read the book herself she had a whole new perspective on what Police Chaplaincy is all about. Thanks Tom for taking the time to write this book. I'll be buying a copy for the other chaplains in our corps.

this book is a good resource to have
By Roger
Having worked as a Police Chaplain for many years prior to purchasing this book, I was familiar with much of it's contents. However if you are new to this mission field or are planning and possibly becoming a law enforcement chaplain, this book is a good resource to have.

Entertaining not Deep
By Randi G Terry-Mack
Interesting stories but not much reflection and even less theology. He also cuts out of his narrative when he gets to his own role in it. I'm not sure what he says or does because he never describes it. He says this ministry is one of presence, but surely that means something more than standing there mute. Obviously written by a non-writer, but I give him a pass on that. Still a must read for those considering this or a related field. And the author's character and compassion are an inspiration.
