Working Stiff's Manifesto: A Memoir, by Iain Levison

Iain Levison can find work but not fulfillment. The frustration of dead-end, deadhead labor induces a kind of pink-slip payback syndrome as the realization sets in that his college degree will gain him little by way of psychic wages on the job. He is adrift in a workaday world where one human is as good as the next and all are expendable. Meaningless promises abound, "like when they were telling us [at commencement that] we were the future of the world, the bright shining blah blah blah."

In ten years, Iain Levison has lived in six states and worked at forty-two jobs, from fish cutter in Alaska to furniture mover in North Carolina, film-set gopher, oil deliveryman, truck driver, crab fisherman . . . He quit thirty of them, got fired from nine, and has difficulty remembering the other three. Whatever could go wrong often did, hilariously.

A Working Stiff's Manifesto makes Nickel and Dimed look like chump change. It is a funny book about the not-so-funny American workplace. The real thing, written not by a high-priced journalist disguised as a counter clerk, or a tenured professor passing as a vagrant, but by a genuine wage-dependent, red-blooded working stiff too "rich" for welfare and too broke to fit a consumer demographic. He works to keep his car running to get back and forth from work. He works to get by and get back to square one for the next day's labors.

From Publishers Weekly
Levison is a "modern-day Tom Joad" who, over the last decade, has worked 42 jobs in six different states, including mover, fish cutter, cook, caterer and cable TV thief. He recalls those jobs in this entertaining, unusual mix of autobiography and social commentary reminiscent of Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America. Levison imagines himself a new breed of itinerant laborer a college graduate with a $40,000 English degree. His America is a desperate and brutal country, a place where you're hired with a promise of insurance after 90 days, then fired on the 89th; where criminals beat each other to a pulp in Alaska fisheries, and truckers make fraudulent entries in their logbooks in order to keep up with impossible schedules. But Levison's droll sense of humor eases him (and his readers) through the tough times; he recalls catering a party and bleeding into the guests' Merlot, expounds on the definition of "r sum " ("the French term for 'page full of bullshit' ") and proposes a new motto for Dutch Harbor, Alaska ("What fatal flaw in your character made you wind up here?"). As both a writer and an employee, Levison can come off as a trifle obnoxious some of his workplace misfortune he definitely brings on himself and he's mercilessly scornful of the corporate yes-men and unscrupulous characters he works with. Yet his moral vision more than makes up for it; he's a sharp-eyed, impassioned critic of the American workplace. (Apr.) Forecast: Although any book that targets itself toward people without a steady paycheck would seem to be doomed, Levison's just might do well, given today's high unemployment rates and the book's undeniable originality.

From Library Journal
A college graduate with a degree in English, Levison has held 42 jobs in the past ten years. He quit 30 of those jobs, was fired from nine, and can't remember the other three. He is currently unemployed. This 164-page screed details his employment history, but it is obvious that Levison's problem is as much his attitude as the poor market for college graduates. He declares an English degree is only good for secretarial work (ignoring such jobs as public relations and journalism), and he applies for jobs for which he clearly is not qualified and seems surprised when they don't work out. Most of the positions he has held are low-wage, dead-end jobs (e.g., Alaskan fish cutter, furniture mover, heating oil deliveryman, etc.), but he makes little effort to improve his lot. Moving up, Levison observes, is "asking for trouble." His employment history is an entertaining read, but there is no reflection or analysis that would be useful to others. Not recommended. Christopher Brennan, SUNY Coll. at Brockport

From Booklist
Ten years after getting army experience and an English degree, Levison had 42 jobs behind him and an insightful tale to tell about the working world. Promised training in electronics by a military recruiter ("my first experience with an experienced corporate bullshit artist"), he learned to handle a rifle and interrogate Russian and East German prisoners, and his degree in English is described as "a $40,000 fly swatter." Through classified ads and word of mouth, he got jobs--as a fish cutter, restaurant worker, oil deliveryman, and computer wire installer, among others--and learned some tips and truths about work. And the truth, to Levinson, is that the corporate world treats inequitably and has basic disregard for what it considers disposable workers, who number in the millions (and include the college-educated) and just scrape by. Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed [BKL Ap 1 01] was a startling reportorial view of low-wage work, but it was based on an assignment, while Levinson describes his life; his account belongs beside hers, and it's funnier, too. A cynical reconciliation with impotence
By Michael K. McKeon
Despite what the title might suggest, "A Working Stiff's Manifesto" is hardly a proletarian call to arms. This social commentary/memoir does live up to it's title in that it focuses on the fate of the average working "stiff" to continually tread water and the probability that there is little he can do to alter it.
The tone of this book is in harmony with Faludi's "Stiffed", Ehrenreich's "Nickle and Dimed", and Moore's "Downsize This". There is little humor here, other than that derived from irony. Levison's opinions have greatly enhanced credibility because they are based upon his own personal experiences shifting from from one low wage job to another struggling to get by.
The power of this work is in the irony it depicts. He very effectively describes how hard work and loyalty are no longer of value to employers, and the average worker is callously treated and continually reminded that he is entirely expendible. Workers are treated as if they have little intelligence and aren't worthy of dignity and respect; when initially enticed with courtesy and enthusiasm in all likelihood those lures are deceits employed to exploit or fleece them.
Levison simply presents his examples, which range from working in a "chi chi" Scarsdale gourmet grocery to an Alaskan seafood processor, in a straightforward, unembellished fashion. His depiction of the absurdity of drug tests and employment questionnaires in light of the recruitment pool drawn by the salaries is one of the many great ironies highlighted by his anecdotes.
He devotes a substantial part of the book depicting the fishing and seafood processing industry in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. His descriptions are interesting, and in some ways grimly reminsicent of "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich".
Toward the end of the book he includes a somewhat inchoate description of the impact (or lack thereof) of the internet.
While he offers some apt and interesting observations, this segment comes as almost a nonsequitur, and could have used more development.
Definitely an interesting read, with apropos observations and social commentary. If you appreciate irony this will appeal to you; however, it is not an uplifting book, but hopefully one which will instill you with greater sensitivity to low wage workers, and compell you to clamor for greater social justice.

Laugh-out-loud funny look at American workplace
By Stephanie Huffman
Don't let the title fool you...this book is laugh-out-loud funny, a true glimpse into how draining it is, both financially and emotionally, to hold a low-wage job in today's economy. Levison takes on a journey through the bottom rungs of America's workforce, describing, with both humor and accuracy, the misery inherent in jobs which do not provide the workers with a living wage. His descriptions of corporate manipulation at something as innocuous as an upscale Scarsdale grocery store, or a corporate restaurant, ring true on every level, as he describes the relentlessness with which the mangement insists on pleasantness. It reminded me of the "flair" scene from the movie "Office Space."
The descriptions of the Alaskan fishing industry are both interesting and frequently hilarious. Nothing misses this writer's sharp, ironic eye.
This book is a must read for everyone who ever feels they are being manipulated or treated like a number at their jobs. Great Stuff!

A Case Study From the Human Condition
By LDP
I heard or read that Kalfa's buddies would howl with delight as he read them passages from "The Trial" when it was a work in-progress; likewise, prisoners at San Quenton never enjoyed themselves more than watching a performance of "Waiting for Godot." I can only recommend this wonderful little memoir as my contribution to this list. My twenties were somewhat similar to Levinson's misadventures although not in scope and insight, still I identified immediately with his odyssey. The book is well written to boot and I plan to read it every decade or so to see what more I can derive. By the way, ignore the poor guy who lambasted this book a few reviews back with comments such as "How to blame everyone but yourself for your problems." There is not an ounce of this anywhere; all Levison wants is fair play after he gets a job and his futile quest to find it is where this story gets it's motivation. If you need one line to summarize, then try this on for size: It's a story about the misuse of power done with great satire. Great read!

Neely Andrews forced her legs to keep moving. One more lap and she'd take a break. Her tendency to add pounds to her five foot six frame provided perfect motivation to exercise. But since she'd been back in Ferndale for nearly seven weeks, she hadn't exercised at all except for running up and down her father's staircase. In Indianapolis, she'd joined a gym. Now she was worried about her dad's recovery from a serious heart attack. Fitness had gone out the window, and weight had flown in. Running the high school track wasn't the answer to her total workout needs, but it was better than nothing.

Although staying in Indianapolis might have been wiser, since she had the lead on another job, she couldn't ignore her need to be closer to her father and widowed sister. Each time she thought about Ashley's loss, Neely's layoff became as unimportant as a lost penny, and though home brought back some darker thoughts, she focused on the brighter memories of friendships and happy times that still made her smile.

Fighting the desire to give her body a rest, Neely steeled herself and pushed forward, her lungs burning. Short of her goal, she nearly tripped over a shoelace splayed at her feet. She came to a stop, propped her hands on her thighs and braced her winded body to catch her breath. When she grasped the lace to retie her shoe, perspiration rolled down her forehead and stung her eyes. She lifted the bottom of her T-shirt and brushed the dampness away.

A wolf whistle jerked her upward, and she dropped the hem of her shirt. Across the field, boys were spilling from the school, wearing shoulder pads and carrying helmets. Two faced her, gawking. She let out a groan. Football practice. Another wolf whistle spurred her to turn away and ignore the silliness. She lowered her eyes to her plump legs, bare beneath a pair of running shorts. Who knew football practice began in August?

Her mind drifted back to the years she'd spent at this high school, but time fogged her mind. Memories of special occasions—some good, some bad—had glided or stumbled through her thoughts once in a while, but football practice hadn't made an impact. Didn't matter anyway. After fifteen years, school procedures had probably changed. Everything had changed.

A shrill whistle caught her attention. She looked toward the team and saw a man strutting onto the field. He glanced her way, said something to the boys, and before she could move, he headed in her direction. She focused on her lace. No doubt she would get a lecture from the coach for being on his turf. While she hurried to retie her shoe, his voice reached her. "Ma'am."

What happened to Ms.? She tilted her head sideways noticing his long stride toward her. His build looked trimmer than a football player's, but beneath his T-shirt she recognized a solid swell of muscles. His frame would look appropriate on a basketball court.

"Ma'am, would you mind leaving the field?"

What happened to please?

"You're distracting the boys."

She what? She straightened, embarrassed at his comment but, more so, irritated. "Sorry, I would have run the track this morning when I drove here earlier, but then I had to fight off the band. Apparently that's when they practice." When he drew close enough for to her to see his face, her heart tripped.

His squint grew to a wide-eyed stare. "Whoa! This can't be Steely Neely?"

She couldn't believe this good-looking specimen was her friend Rainie's pesky kid brother. The only person she knew who would call her the concocted name was Jonny Turner. In the past, she would have shot out her typical insult, but "If it isn't the conehead" faded from her mind. When she looked into his handsome face, she had all she could do to keep her mouth from gaping as widely as his.

"Jonny Turner. You're kidding me." She gazed upward at the six-foot-plus hunk of man with the blue eyes she could never forget. Blue like a crystal lake. It had been Jonny's saving attribute, and she'd told him so years earlier.

"How about Jonathan or Jon." He grinned, obviously enjoying her startled expression. "Jonny's long gone."

"Jon not Jonny? I don't know." She gave him a dubious look. "But here's a deal—only if you drop the ridiculous Steely Neely. It's stupid."

"No, it's accurate." He sent her a crooked smile. "Even when we were kids, I'd never known a person as determined as you are. You were as strong-willed as steel."

She rolled her eyes, hoping he got the point, but showing her usual disdain with him was losing the battle.

His grin remained as if he hadn't noticed her eye-rolls. "Sis told me you were back in town. And I hear you're her maid of honor."

Neely managed an agreeable nod, though she was still in a tailspin. Maid of honor seemed a sad title for a thirty-two-year-old woman. Most of her high school friends would expect her to be dubbed the matron of honor by now. But finding Mr. Right hadn't happened, not since her days with Erik Cross. She cringed. He'd been Mr. Wrong.

Jonny's eyes brightened. "And if I'm right, maid of honor means you're still—"

"Right again." She rolled her eyes for a second time, not happy with the gleam in his. He'd always rebutted her verbal jabs with "you'll never find a man with that attitude." He'd been way too accurate.

"What are you doing here?" She waved her hand toward the gawking teens watching them.

"I was going to ask you the same question." He motioned to the strip of track. "I teach phys ed and coach football and basketball." This time he rolled his eyes. "That's obvious, isn't it? But you again, that's a different story. Why are you running on my track?"

"It's a long story." And not a story she wanted to tell him. The more she looked at him the more tongue-tied she became. "Rainie didn't mention you were teaching now." Or that you'd turned into a great-looking man.

"Why would Lorraine talk to you about me?" He chuckled. "Or have you forgotten your lovable animosity?" He shifted to face his gawking team, and blew his whistle.

She pressed her hands over her ears, blocking the shrill assault on her eardrums.

He cupped his hands around his mouth like a megaphone. "Push-ups. Twenty." He held up both hands, fingers spread and acted out his order. Their groans sounded across the distance.

She lowered her hands. "Can you warn me when you're going to blow that thing?"

"Sorry." He dropped the whistle, and it bounced against his chest before hanging in place. His eyes shifted from the team to her. "I need to get back to my boys, but. " He touched her arm. "I wanted to say I'm sorry about your dad. I heard it was a bad one."

His sincere turn-about caught her off-guard. "It was. Really bad. He lost a lot of his heart function. Now that Mom's gone I need to keep him healthy." Watching her dad trudging up and down the stairs for something he'd forgotten wasn't part of her health plan for him. On the other hand, convincing him to use the guest room on the first floor was. Yet so far her attempt had failed. Maybe that's where she'd inherited her determination. He stood as firm as a rock. She sighed. "Running the stairs for him is the only exercise I've gotten since I came home. That's why I'm jogging around the track."

He wrapped his arm around her and gave her shoulder a hug. "Exercise is good." He squeezed her again before dropping his arm. "We have a new gym in town, Tone and Trim Fitness Center. I go there. You might want to give it a try."

"Are you telling me I can't run your track?" She arched a brow, a little irked at his suggestion.

He grinned. "You can run anytime you want except when my boys are on the field. You're a real distraction."

His expression caused heat to rise up her neck. "I'll take your suggestion into advisement." But a fitness center cost money, and right now she was jobless.

He gave her a wink. "I need to get back to my team. I wish we had more time to talk." His eyes captured hers, and a tender expression washed over his face. "I can't believe it's you." He took off running backward, his eyes still on her, but when he spun around, he came to a halt.

Neely winced, thinking he might trip with the abrupt stop, but he didn't, he turned back to her again.

"I'll be done here in an hour or so. How about coffee or even dinner. Will you join me?"

Ten years ago the idea would have been ludicrous, but at the moment, looking at those eyes had roused her interest even though she still couldn't accept he was the new improved Jonny. A crazy memory popped into her mind, and she jabbed her fist into her hip. "You poured sand in my hair when I was twelve."

His jaw dropped before a glint sprang to his eyes. "Accident, or maybe I wanted you to appreciate my new dump truck." He gave her a wink. "Whichever, I promise I'll never do it again."

The wink sent prickles down her arm, and a witty retaliation failed her.

He started his backward walk toward his team. "So what about joining me?"

His easy spirit and charm made her head spin while curiosity got the better of her. "Sounds nice, Jonny. I'm staying at my dad's. You remember where it is?"

"How could I forget?" His backward jog picked up. "Give me a couple hours. Let's call it dinner."

He darted off, and she watched him go, still trying to turn that good-looking man into Rainie's brother who'd been the bane of her teen years. And if that didn't confuse her, her heartbeat, flitting like a bird in spring, did.

Jon strode along the sidewalk beside Neely, amazed that she'd agreed to have dinner with him. When they were growing up, she avoided him every chance she had. But he couldn't blame her. He was four years younger than she, and obnoxious. Boys who'd just learned about girls and had to deal with the first twitches of testosterone failed to make wise decisions when it came to falling in love. Neely had hung in his mind forever. And today, Neely, the woman, tightened the noose without knowing. He'd thought about her all these years, never suspecting the Lord would bring her back into his life. But here she was.

In his peripheral vision, he drank in her profile, the tilt of her well-shaped nose, the fullness of her lips, the rounded shape of her cheek molding into her defined jaw. His hopes lifted knowing he would see her around town—maybe even back on the track—but he wanted so much more, and most important, he needed to test the waters. "Are you looking forward to seeing Erik at Rainie and Ty's engagement party?"

Her eyes darkened. "Erik? You mean Erik Cross? Don't tell me he's still in town." A look of panic filled her face.

Though her expression heightened his confidence, it confused him. "Erik joined his dad's company after college so he's still in the area." He studied her, trying to make sense out of what had just happened. Panic didn't seem appropriate. "Sorry I mentioned him. I didn't realize you had bad—"

Her distraught look remained. "Maybe you didn't know—you were so young—but I broke off our relationship." She shrugged. "He started talking marriage, and I realized I had a whole life in front of me."

He'd known about her breakup with Erik. Rainie and she had talked about it, and he'd overheard some of their conversations, but Neely had been the one to end it so why did it still hold a sting? Her attitude turned him upside down. It didn't quite make sense. To him real love meant he would have a whole world in front of him to be with the woman he loved. "You two were a thing back in high school."

"I know. We broke up just before he left for college." Her comment seemed an afterthought, yet he struggled with her strained expression. "Sorry, Neely. I knew you weren't together because I knew you hadn't married him. But I didn't know you had bad feelings."

She shook her head. "I need to get over it." She averted her eyes and kicked at a stone on the sidewalk. "Where is this restaurant, anyway?"

"Right up ahead." He pointed to the purple-and-green-striped awning a block away. "It's called Pronto." He slipped his hand to her shoulder, wanting to ease her edginess. "Can we forget my earlier reference and cheer up?"

She tilted her head toward him. "I am cheery, but I'm not happy to hear Erik's coming to the party. Why was he invited?"

"He's a friend of Ty's."

She drew up her shoulders. "I'll just steer clear of him. I'm not in the mood for auld lang syne." Her lips curved to a faint grin. "You know what I mean?"

He agreed, but he really didn't know what she meant unless her reference hinted at Erik's problem. Cheating on his wife had ended Erik's marriage. Maybe it ended Neely's relationship with him, too.

They walked the rest of the way in silence, and he was grateful when they'd reached the restaurant. He opened the door, wishing he could start their visit again. "How about over there?" He motioned to the empty table.

She nodded and followed his direction without comment, and once seated, she studied the menu while he studied her. Being with Neely seemed like a dream. Years ago he'd been Rainie's brother. Today he'd become an equal. At least an equal in his mind. "Does having dinner with me seem strange?" He lowered his menu to the table.

Her head jerked upward as color tinted her face. "You must have read my mind."

He wished he could. "No, but I'm a good guesser."

A grin flickered on her lips. "I'm trying to acclimate myself to the situation. If it weren't for your gorgeous eyes, I'd think you were an imposter."

Her resolute gaze nearly caused his undoing. "I hope that's a compliment."

"It is." She turned her attention to the menu.

Aware that he'd reaped a compliment from Steely Neely sent his pulse racing. But then reality brought it to a halt. A compliment was only that. He wanted so much more. "Rainie said you're home to stay."

She inched her head upward as if in thought. "Not sure about the 'to stay' part, but right now I'm home without other plans. I was laid off from Zigman's, and with the economy so bad, I read the writing on the wall. The layoff would be permanent."

"You didn't read the writing well enough, I'm afraid." He hated being the bearer of bad news, but she needed to know.

She tilted her head as if puzzled.

"Michigan's economy is rotten, too."

"I know. It's the pits." Her face shadowed. "It doesn't matter, I guess. I really came back for Dad and my sister. It's been tough for Ashley."

Those feelings were ones he understood. "Losing a husband with a newborn baby is something I can't even wrap my mind around." Neely's expression deepened his sadness.

"Jonny." She gave his arm a pat. "Thanks for caring."

Her hand didn't move, and the warmth radiated to his chest. He looked into her eyes, wishing he could resolve her problems for her.

A seasoned story-teller!
By D. V. Colepaugh
I have been a fan of Gail Gaymer Martin's books since I discovered that many are set near the lovely lakes of Michigan. While this one is set in Michigan, sadly there isn't a single ripple of lake water. Still, the book is a lovely escape and a great weekend read.

Gail is a seasoned storyteller with about 50 books to her credit. Her stories weave together real life journeys and struggles, God-honoring relationships and romance, and an ending that leaves you wishing for another 50 pages. In fact, I find myself, at the end of each of her books, dreading that there are few pages ahead because I don't want to part with the characters that she has lovingly developed.

In this book, Neely and Jonny are childhood friends who meet again on the football field, where he is the school coach and she has returned from Indianapolis to resolve personal issues and care for family needs. To her, Jonny is still the little brother of her best friend and she finds it difficult to notice that he is now a gorgeous man, inside and out. When she finds herself calling him for help again, she finally realizes that he has a growing place in her heart. But her secrets and fears keep him at arm's length until a near-tragedy brings them to face these issues honestly. The response is not what she expected, but life never is what we expect ... sometimes it's so much better. Valentine's Day provides a lovely setting to conclude the story, and make the reader want to know so much more about the characters.

Fortunately, Gail plans to continue the story in her next book, which I anticipated from the moment I closed the back cover of this delightful story. A seasoned story-teller, Gail has delivered another story that weaves together the love and hope of God with the love and hope of relationship.

Not just a seasonal read
By HRH
The book is deeper than the title implies. The story has very little to do with Valentine's Day, which plays only a small (but sweet) role at the end. Neely is a thirty something who's biggest problem isn't her unemployment, her ailing father, her widowed sister, her weight, or her love life. Neely's biggest problem is discontentment. She's struggling with the move back to her hometown and into her father's home. She searching for balance between caregiver and daughter. The same determination that won her the childhood nickname "Steely Neely" is both positive and negative in her adult life. Doing it her way is causing problems with her family and with her potential love interest, the "boy next door" Jonny. Jon's now the local football coach and a mature Christian man. Jon has never forgotten his teenage crush on Neely. He appreciates the woman she's become even more. While Neely is determined to keep things casual he's just as determined to show her that the past is behind them. Neely's famous determination proves helpful as she learns from her mistakes and matures into a better woman by the story's end. Football fans will appreciate Mrs. Martin's efforts to include coaching details and plays into the story. Even a football novice should enjoy the football style metaphors about love and life.
It's refreshing to read a story about two never married people who don't have kids. The book started off a little slow. But I appreciated the heroine's emotional growth, a likeable hero and a solid ending. I give the book 3.5 stars.

Inspiring Romance
By katrina Epperson
This author brings us an inspirational story about relationships. We are introduced to strong characters who need to work through many issues to see where God is leading them.
Neely Andrews has returned to her hometown after her father suffered a heart attack and to be an attendant in her best friend's (Raine) wedding. She feels she's at loose ends after being let go from her job and returning to the house she grew up in. She runs into the high school football coach one day while trying to get some exercise. Wow, it couldn't be little Jonny Turner, Raine's younger brother, but it was. Jonny followed them around growing up and was in general a pest. How could that little boy grow into such an incredible man. Jonny has always had a crush on Neely and the crush comes back in full force upon seeing her again. How can he convince her to see him as the man he is now and not the little pest he was growing up.
I really enjoyed this story. It shows that even people of faith have there moments of being sure of where God is leading them and questioning if they should follow. This is a realistic story of two people trying to combine the past with the present, but only seeing what is now.

North American Ultrarunning: A History, by Andy Milroy

North American Ultrarunning: A History explores the rich heritage of ultradistance running stretching back thousands of years; the Americas were originally peopled by nomads on foot.

The book documents ultradistance feats by Native Americans, the earliest European explorers and settlers, before recording the growing development of the professional sport in North America in the nineteenth century. This fascinating story continues onwards into the twentieth century to the Pyle Trans-America races and beyond into the more recognisable post-war ultra scene, whilst featuring the ultra exploits of such famous marathon runners as Clarence DeMar, Gerard Cote and Alberto Salazar.

It records the development of an American sport with deep historical roots, basic to human development, enabling runners to experience to some degree the lives of those who lived decades, centuries even thousands of years ago.

Good Book--great resources
By John M.
Nick Marshall, David Blaikie, Dan Brannen -- three names richly endowed with knowledge of the history of ultramarathons in North America appear in the acknowledgements section of Andy Milroy's
book "North American Ultrarunning : A History"

With Frank Bozanich's recent induction into the American Ultrarunning Association's Hall of Fame and the reemergence of interest in multiday events (Across The Years is going on as I type) in the U.S. there is an increase in questions about the subject of Milroy's book.

"North American Ultrarunning : A History" is not the yearly statistics and commentary Marshall's annually provided, but it is certainly an introduction to the pedestrian era of the late 1800s, the scattered events of the early 1900s, and the emergence of "modern" (my quotes with no particular significance or date) as Ted Corbitt entered the scene.

Milroy takes us into the realm of U.S. runners breaking the old. and often thought of as untouchable, records of the previous century's pedestrians. He includes track and road, fixed-time events, men and the emergence of world-class women.

In 1970, Michiko Gorman became the first U.S. woman to cover 100 miles on a track in less than 24 hours (21:04:00). Gordy Ainsleigh gets his paragraph. Buzz Sawyer and what would become the JFK 50 is in our roots. Park Barner, Marshall, Bozanich, Ruth Anderson, Sue Ellen Trapp, Marcy Schwam, Don Choi... and a host of other names with just enough summarizing to tease any runner's curiosity.

With barely a week of winter gone by, Milroy's book would be a good addition to any runner's library as a mind wondered why this or that or some other run, person, or record flitted by on the Internet.

Run gently out there.

Outstanding Ultrarunning History
By Edward Sears
Andy Milroy is a veteran British sports historian who concentrates on ultrarunning (races longer than the marathon). He has just published an excellent history of ultrarunning in North America. Milroy's meticulously researched 76-page book "North American Ultrarunning: A History" (Kindle Edition - 30 Oct 2012) starts with the earliest known ultrarunning in America by the Norwegian Vikings in 1009 A.D. and covers the sport up to 2012.

The 1928-1929 "Bunion Derby" races across the United States are one of the highlights of the book. One reason Milroy can write so convincingly about them is that he got to know Peter Gavuzzi, one of the stars of those long ago races. Gavuzzi led much of the race in 1928 and finished second in 1929. Until the day he died, he still had the I.O.U. race director C. C. Pyle gave him instead of his 1929 winnings.

Milroy describes the running of Native Americans, Ted Corbitt, Park Bonner, Ann Trason and many other outstanding American ultrarunners. He points out that American ultrarunners have excelled in international competition in recent years and gives some possible reasons for their success.

Highly recommended.

Exploited, by Emma Jackson

'If you read the papers, you'd think that the only girls to get hooked are from dysfunctional families. But what happened to me could happen to anyone. Your child, your sister, your friend – even yourself if you are young and naive enough, like I was'

Emma was just 13 when her happy childhood came crashing down. A nice girl from a good home, she had no idea the young lads she and her friends met every Saturday in the shopping mall weren’t all they seemed.

The boys were part of an organised child sexual exploitation gang targeting innocent young girls, grooming them for prostitution. Captivated by the ring leader, and the alcohol and drugs he freely handed round, Emma didn't see the first brutal rape coming. From that moment, her life was never her own.

Emma found herself drawn into a trap of degradation and violence, frightened for her life and not knowing where to turn. But Exploited is also the story of how she found the courage and inner strength to risk everything, and escape.

Exploited is an updated edition of Emma's book The End of My World - brought bang up to date with a brand new chapter.

A story that will stay with you, especially if you have daughters!
By LovetoRead
From the outset I would say that Exploited is not an easy book to read but not because it is badly written. On the contrary the author, a young woman in her late 20's, has done an excellent job with her book. It is fast-paced and certainly held my interest. No, this book is hard to read because of the subject matter that it contains. Emma sets the stage well in the beginning of the book, speaking of her idyllic childhood and hard-working parents who love her and her brother very much. In fact they love her so much that they work long hours to provide for her and that is when the trouble starts, when Emma starts to go elsewhere and hang out with her "friends" more than she is at home. As you can guess, her "friends" are no friends at all and Emma goes through hell before her mother stumbles upon the truth. I was honestly surprised that she survived to write this book! As a mom with a daughter I cringe to think of how easily Emma gets mixed up in the child sex trade. I think this is a very important book for anyone to read, but especially if you are a parent. I highly recommend it!

France - Culture Smart!: The Essential Guide to Customs & Culture, by Barry Tomalin

France has experienced considerable upheaval in recent years. The Eurozone crisis, a new socialist president, rioting by an alienated underclass, a ban on the burqa (full veil) in public places, and an attempt to democratize the elite system of education all point to significant changes in French society. At the same time leading French companies are major investors in European energy resources, services, and luxury products, and between three and four hundred thousand French people live in Britain, making London, as former President Sarkozy stated, France's fifth- or sixth-largest city. The implications of these changes have not yet fully permeated French society, but they reveal a slow process of adaptation to new realities. Meanwhile, in international affairs, France makes a major and distinctive contribution and carefully guards its interests and prestige. The rivalry between Paris and the provinces continues the traditional split between North and South. France as a whole maintains its stately pace as a centre of culture, civilization, and, of course, the good life, which is one of the reasons it remains, with 75 million visitors a year, the most visited country in the world.   This new, updated edition of Culture Smart! France looks at the attitudes and values of the French today. It explains how French life and business work and shows you how to fit in as a foreigner. There is practical advice on how to avoid the pitfalls and do things the French way. It takes you through history, festivals, and traditions, the French at home, on the road, in the restaurant, and at work. Above all, it shows you how the French communicate, and how best to get along with this sometimes frustrating yet charming and brilliant people.

Essentially filled with idiotic clichés and gross inaccuracies
By Fabrice
I am French, and yet I do not recognise French culture or people in this book.

Even though about 10-20% of the book is accurate, the rest is just a compilation of ridiculous inaccuracies (I am 35 and have never seen any shop closed on good friday in France) or fairly xenophobic clichés (i.e. The French see themselves as a big family, Frenchness and French language are an obsession, they keep on innovating in order to feel good as a country, they do not use deodorant, etc!!!).
The author seems to build on his personal prejudices/frustrations toward the French, without realising that the traits he attributes to the French people in general are usually some types of general criticisms that could apply to any kind of people, including the English or the Americans.

Due to their lack of originality, these criticisms will not teach one much about France, but may comfort one in one's erroneous prejudices. Go for another book about France, sorry...

Please Do Not Waste Your Money!!!
By RainBowie
I bought this book because I heard Culture Smart! is a great series, but this book is a HUGE exception.

Read "Au Contraire: Figuring out the French"(available free online) or "French or Foe" instead. The many quotes he has from these books were the only minor insights available.

The author spent the entire book making snide comments on how horribly impossible and arrogant French people are(The author is British). What was worse than his attitude was the fact that he assumed that if you are a British or American person in France you automatically want to meet other British and American people instead of French people. There were typos, it repeated itself almost verbatim throughout the book and really if I hadn't already fallen in love with France from a previous trip I would have been afraid that French people would eat me. TERRIBLE BOOK.

Definitely Read Before Travelling
By MooreNoLess
France - Culture Smart is a very good overview book to read before traveling to or throughout France. For us, it is the perfect companion to our earlier purchase: Speak the Culture France - Be Fluent in French Life and Culture. After reading at least half of both books, no one can say they "don't get the French." We "got them" and it made our travel much more enjoyable and meaningful. Clear explanations, interesting insights and very understandable overall context were provided for both the traveler or casual Francophile. To put it in Americanese; these are bullshit-free travel books. Don't go to Paris, Lyon or any part of France before reading these genuinely enjoyable books. They also also make good evening reads in the hotel room.

Excellent Biography of the Woman and the Spirit
By L. M. McDonald
The book downloaded easily and smoothly. Roberts Liardon was told by Jesus to review the lives of His great leaders, His "generals"· Roberts was to analyze their lives and ministries to see how they succeeded and what were their weaknesses. He did a good job here with Kathryn Kuhlman showing us her childhood, her call to the ministry, her ministry itself, and her going home to Jesus at age 68. You really get a feel for Kathryn the person, a very authentic lady with both an amazing intimacy with God, as well as some very human foibles. The book tells of the miracles and the healings. She had deep fellowship with the Holy Spirit and it showed. An excellent read both for those of us who remember her as well as those born later.

I loved learning of Kathryn, but I felt like someone was sitting down in a living room with me and telling me a story. I wish that it was written differently, but overall, I appreciate what the author did when he wrote about this amazing woman of God.
