Review
"An excellent book in the questioning Beginners Guides series. Examining all the key themes, and then comparing all the different Christian perspectives to these themes, make it a guide for those who like to think a little deeper on the issues." -- Publishing News, October 5, 2007

Very helpful for Intro to theology course
By Nate Bostian
I am an Episcopal priest who teaches in a private high school. I use this book to teach introductory theology to adolescents. The strength of this book lies in the fact it is (a) concise, (b) uses non-specialist terminology, and (c) gives a broad view of multiple Christian interpretations of various theological topics (such as Trinity, Creation, Incarnation, Atonement, etc.). Ward does a great job in each chapter of first presenting commonalities across Christian traditions, and then giving three main interpretations of the doctrine held by different kinds of Christians across history and across denominations.
Of course, much more can and should be said about each topic, and this can be provided in the classroom by a competent teacher and supplemental source readings and Bible studies. But Ward does a great job of giving a broad sketch that can be filled in, as well as compared and contrasted by students. There are flaws in the book: Namely that on occasion he gives one view or another a short treatment, and spends more time on his preferred view. But, again, these are easily remedied by supplemental readings and class discussion. All in all, I have found nothing on the market that does the job this book does in the same concise, easily-approachable way.
I think some of the other reviewers missed the basic purpose and premise of the book. On one hand, it is NOT an in-depth study of each doctrine that is dissected. It is a short introduction, and should be treated as such. If you want an in-depth analysis and cross-comparison of views of the Trinity or the Atonement, one should get a full-bore systematic theology, or a specialty book on the subject. On the other hand, for the reviewer that holds the peculiar view that Christianity IS ONLY what he believes, how he interprets the Bible, and who he associates himself with, this is really a caricature of Christianity. Ward's book should be a nice antidote, in short form, to the idea that my idea of Christ is the only idea of Christ that can be held by a faithful Christ-follower. Of course, since he shredded the book, he'll probably never get the message.

A bit disconnected
By PH Bible Student
I bought this book because I really liked Keith Ward's essays in another book ("The Work of Love: Creation as Kenosis") and because I'm looking for a good, simple, clear book that could be recommended to new Christians or seekers. Unfortunately, for each chapter in this book Ward gives three different viewpoint--usually a traditional conservative view, a standard liberal view, and what might be called a third-way or progressive option. To me this results in a confusing, disconnected experience for the reader. I wish he would have instead divided the book into three sections, where each section would cover all of the points from start to finish for each of the three viewpoints. I also wish he would have omitted terms like "perichoresis" and "pleroma" and just kept the language simple.
I found the Atonement section particularly disappointing. He didn't spend enough time here in making a persuasive or plausible case for any of the views or models of the atonement. By comparison, S. Mark Heim, in his book, "Saved from Sacrifice," gave concise, persuasive, compelling summaries of all of the various traditional atonement models (and Heim made compelling cases for each model even though he isn't satisfied with any of them as they are traditionally understood).
Bottom line is that I'm still looking for a good, simple, clear introduction to Christianity. I will read more of Ward's books, though, because I think he does have some very interesting ideas regarding theology and philosophy.

This is WRONG!
By J Book
For a book entitled the way it is, it doesn't seem very exclusive in what it "teaches"..
Well, this is what the Christians say or the Bible teaches... but really there are many ways to look at this...
I have shredded my copy just so no one else would be fooled into thinking what this title says is accurate Bible teaching. What it states inside is not the same regardless of denomination. A book like this could ruin the lives of many new Christians.
There is only ONE way to get to Heaven... there is not a grab-bag full of options!
Christianity, Hinduism, Confucianism, Buddhism, etc...ARE NOT THE SAME!
