Farm Mechanics: The Original 1922 Edition, by Fred D. Crawshaw, E W. Lehmann

An essential agricultural text originally published in 1922, Farm Mechanics is exactly that: a detailed but easy-to-understand manual outlining all the important aspects of working the land.

The guide is broken up into sections that cover every aspect of farm work, from woodworking and cement-laying to farm machinery repair. Informative and easy to understand, with close to five hundred illustrations and photographs, Farm Mechanics is both a historical reference for those interested in the history of agriculture and a commonsense tool that outlines essential agricultural skills.

For those who want to know more about the golden days of farming, there are plenty of details here to paint a vivid picture of early-twentieth-century farming in the United States, accompanied by detailed photos and illustrations of farm equipment and practices in action.

But this isn’t just a book of theoretical practices for curious historians either—while some of the skills explained here might admittedly seem inapplicable for modern use (due to advances in technology most farmers aren’t taking the time to learn blacksmithing, for instance), other sections, like cement and concrete or rope and harness work for farm animals, contain tools and advice that are still indispensable to the modern-day farmer.

Capital of the Mind, by James Buchan

A triumph of fact-based, imaginatively expressed writing' - Magnus Magnusson 'Buchan's confident and astringent study is based on an informed love of Scotland and its stories are told to excellent effect' - Daily Telegraph '[An] elegant portrait of Edinburgh in the age of Enlightenment' - Times Literary Supplement 'As Buchan says in this marvellous book, "there is no city like Edinburgh in all the world"' - Sunday Times In the early 18th century, Edinburgh was a filthy backwater town synonymous with poverty and disease. Yet by century's end, it had become the marvel of modern Europe, home to the finest minds of the day and their breathtaking innovations in architecture, politics, science, the arts, and economies - all of which continues to echo loudly today. Adam Smith penned "The Wealth of Nations". James Boswell produced "The Life of Samuel Johnson". Alongside them, pioneers such as David Hume, Robert Burns, James Hutton, and Sir Walter Scott transformed the way we understand our perceptions and feelings, sickness and health, relations between the sexes, the natural world, and the purpose of existence. James Buchan beautifully reconstructs the intimate geographic scale and boundless intellectual milieu of Enlightenment Edinburgh. With the scholarship of an historian and the elegance of a novelist, he tells the story of the triumph of this unlikely town and the men whose vision brought it into being.

Review
'James Buchan has written a hugely readable and comprehensive review of this volatile period in the city's life. Fascinating anecdotes and arguments sparkle across its pages, and...CAPITAL OF THE MIND is an absolute joy to read.' -- Irvine Welsh, Guardian 'James Buchan tells the extraordinary story with a novelist's narrative zip and brilliant flashes of detail ... as Buchan says in this marvellous book, "there is no city like Edinburgh in all the world."' -- Sunday Times 'Vigorous and entertaining' -- Sunday Telegraph 'A work of prodigious research and clarity of thought' -- Irish Examiner 20031227 'Thought-provoking examination of the role played by Edinburgh in the creation of the Enlightenment' -- Scottish Sunday Herald 20031221 'With a novelist's flair for pace and a prodigious eye for detail ... Capital of the Mind brings 18th-century Edinburgh vividly to life. The narrative ... is fascinating' -- The Field 20040301 'A brilliant piece of work, by far the best biography of my hometown' -- Irvine Welsh, Guardian 20040619 'There have been many books about "The Athens of the North", but none as authoritative as this' -- The Times 20040814 'Edinburgh ... laid the mental foundations for the modern world' -- Sunday Telegraph 20040808 'Buchan vigorously advances the argument announced in his title, and he writes intellectual history like the novelist he is' -- Independent 20040808 'Buchan does a scholarly job of describing this transformation' -- Halifax Daily News 20040808 'He brings us the look and smell and feel of Scotland ... The book is a triumph of fact-based, imaginatively-expressed writing' -- Magnus Magnusson, New Statesman 20040808 'For such a learned history, Mr Buchan has a clear writing style, a light touch and a irreverent sense of humour. In the more gently paced chapters on such intellectuals as David Hume and Adam Smith, he combines deft broad strokes with intricate details, shading in apparently dry subjects with innumerable and delightful anecdotes that bring the old city to life.' -- Economist 20040808 'An entertaining intellectual history ... Pungently evoking the Old Town and the planning of the new, masterfully condensing the lives and works of such titans as David Hume and Adam Smith, coolly anatomising the bogus Gaelic epics of Ossian and the newfangled cult of sentiment, and watching half-amused, half-outraged, as Boswell and Johnson career through his pages, Buchan brilliantly tells a complex story' -- Guardian 20040828

Intellectual history that's worth a little effort
By Andrew S. Rogers
Anyone who has been to Edinburgh might be surprised to think that just a few centuries ago the city occupied little more than one street down the slope of a rocky hill. And yet in this fine book (which I purchased in that city while on vacation), James Buchan captures not only the intellectual and social ferment in Edinburgh during the decades after Culloden, but also the physical escape from that stifling geography that paralleled the mental liberation. It's a combination that on this Burns Night seems a very good way to celebrate the sometimes underestimated influence of Scots culture and learning on the world.

My paperback copy of "Capital of the Mind" includes on the cover an endorsement blurb from Irvine Welsh of the Guardian (or "Grauniad," as Private Eye would have it) that this is "an utterly compelling and captivating work." I have to admit I don't entirely agree. In fact, I found the first few chapters somewhat unengaging, though I admit that could be more a matter of taste and I recognize the importance of those chapters in setting the stage for what came later. It was only around page 100 or so, when the intellectual blossoming really began to take place with David Hume and Adam Smith that I was drawn into the story more completely.

Still, I don't think that Buchan's look at intellectual and social history is necessarily for everyone. Simon Winchester, for example, is I think a better pure storyteller, de gustibus non est disputandum. But there's also no disputing the importance of Buchan's story, or his undoubted skill as a researcher and writer. Whether you're interested in Edinburgh and Scots culture, or tracing the currents of intellectual history and the particular influence of that city's unique mix of Calvinism and skepticism, idealism and common sense, "Capital of the Mind" has a lot to recommend it.

A welcome recognition of Edinburgh's remarkable thinkers
By Amazon Customer
Some years ago I travelled through India and Pakistan and was impressed by the scale and durability of much of the infrastructure built by the British Raj over a century ago. As is the way of monument builders, there was often a plaque to commemorate the opening of these structures. More often than not, Scots played a prominent role in their construction.

I often wondered why Scottish engineers, soldiers and administrators were so prominent among Britain's empire builders. This book provides insights into some of the answers.

The non-conformist Kirk promoted rationalism, education, discipline and a sense of duty which drove much of empire building. Less positive, but also crucial to empire, were occasional streaks of fanaticism and intolerance.

The social and political disasters of the first half of the 18th century swept away old ways of life and thought, which were replaced by the new thinkers and an influx of English ways. The old highland social order was largely destroyed and in many cases tenants were forced off the land to starve or seek a new life in Scotland or the new colonies.

Edinburgh became the most celebrated centre for medical education in the world. Edinburgh graduates came to predominate in the army, navy and the government of India.

But Edinburgh flourished intellectually and technically in many areas in the second half of the 18th century and its remarkable thinkers exerted a powerful world-wide impact. David Hume (philosophy), Adam Smith (economics), Joseph Black (chemistry), James Hutton (geology) and James Watt (steam technology) are just a few of these people who literally changed the way we think and work.

The book has the mandatory chapter on women. However, in this case it is not just self-serving political correctness. Scotland had some remarkable women in this period. Anne Mackintosh, for example, brought 600 men to support the Prince against her husband's wishes "a pistol in her hand and money in the other."

"Capital of the Mind" devotes a lot of space to the arts, but does not do justice to science and technology. Hutton, for one, deserves more than a cursory treatment of his epochal contributions to geology. After all, he was one of the founders of modern geology. The comings and goings of the poet Burns, on the other hand, are described in minute detail, even down to his daily changes of accomodation while visiting Edinburgh.

This book is packed with facts, especially the descriptive earlier chapters. Often the facts and minute detail obscure the broader issues the book deals with. There are sufficient colour pictures of the main personalities and general views of the town, but not a single map or even a town plan.

The absence of plans and maps might seem a trivial criticism, but it is not when the author relies heavily on the names of places, streets and even buildings to tell the story. Even a Scot might have challenge to follow the detailed geographical twists and turns without an atlas by his side.

A Fascinating Work!
By Ian Mackechnie
For those who have had their fair share of reading about the Scottish Enlightenment, you may think this is just another work written in a similar vein.

However, the beauty of this work is that it places so many of the great Scotish characters - Hume, Smith, Blair, Hutchinson and so on- into both a historic and even architectural context. You almost feel you are walking the sheets and frequenting the taverns and meeting places with these mighty, yet very human, men.

For example, so often we forget that Hume just followed on from the times of Bonnie Prince Charles and was writting at the time when the kirk held such social and political sway over everyday thought and life in Scotland.

This book brings history alive and by placing our heroes in their social context, helps us to better visualize the times into which these great men from Scotland spoke.

A great read! Upon opening this book, I was completely anti-social until the last page!

Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club, by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Winner of the 2013 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction!

Benjamin Alire Sáenz's stories reveal how all borders--real, imagined, sexual, human, the line between dark and light, addict and straight--entangle those who live on either side. Take, for instance, the Kentucky Club on Avenida Juárez two blocks south of the Rio Grande. It's a touchstone for each of Sáenz's stories. His characters walk by, they might go in for a drink or to score, or they might just stay there for a while and let their story be told. Sáenz knows that the Kentucky Club, like special watering holes in all cities, is the contrary to borders. It welcomes Spanish and English, Mexicans and gringos, poor and rich, gay and straight, drug addicts and drunks, laughter and sadness, and even despair. It's a place of rich history and good drinks and cold beer and a long polished mahogany bar. Some days it smells like piss. "I'm going home to the other side." That's a strange statement, but you hear it all the time at the Kentucky Club.

Benjamin Alire Sáenz is a highly regarded writer of fiction, poetry, and children's literature. Like these stories, his writing crosses borders and lands in our collective psyche. Poets & Writers Magazine named him one of the fifty most inspiring writers in the world. He's been a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and PEN Center's prestigious award for young adult fiction. Sáenz is the chair of the creative writing department of University of Texas at El Paso.

From Booklist
The publisher describes these seven excellent stories as being about borders. That is certainly true as far as it goes, but it is equally true that these stories have even more to do with boundaries—the boundaries people set to protect themselves from physical or emotional harm, the ones that people cross in order to survive, or the ones they cross to intrude or intervene in someone else’s life. Sàenz’s tales are about the arbitrary boundaries that society sets and the ones children build against a world they don’t understand. In today’s political climate, one that is awash in ideology surrounding national borders, Sàenz’s all-too-human characters transcend political polarization despite living within it. A versatile writer who has won major fellowships and awards, especially for his young adult and children’s titles, Sàenz writes prose that is tender, occasionally fierce, and always engaging. Read every word of his stories lest you miss some clever twist, some subtle irony, some gentle nuance of poetic imagery that he has labored to create. --Donna Chavez

Review
"Sáenz's moving collection of short stories hinges on the intergenerational clientele of the titular borderland watering hole just south of the U.S.-Mexican divide on Avenida Juárez…there's much to enjoy in these gritty, heartfelt stories. — Publishers Weekly

"Seven excellent stories … [by] a versatile writer … Sàenz writes prose that is tender, occasionally fierce, and always engaging. Read every word of his stories lest you miss some clever twist, some subtle irony, some gentle nuance of poetic imagery that he has labored to create." — Booklist

"Seven stunningly evocative short stories … a haunting tableau of characters wrestling with the boons and burdens of existence … Saenz, with these masterfully hewn stories, presents this hardscrabble yet tenacious city as beautiful in its contradictions, disquieting in its ambiguities, and heartbreaking in its quotidianness. Filtered through this book are the lives of its singular people: doomed, broken, resourceful, and, above all else, faithful—to the city and to the parts they play in its intricate dimensions." — Texas Books in Review

"Though the prolific Benjamin Alire Sáenz has been writing books in every genre for the past two decades, Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club is only his second short-story collection. But the wait was definitely worth it … [The story "He Has Gone to Be with the Women"] is nothing short of a masterpiece … In one story, a school counselor says the following about his troubled charges: "They came to me with a thirst in their eyes, a thirst, such a thirst and I knew that I could never give them the rain they deserved, the rain they so desperately needed." That might as well be The Kentucky Club speaking, since every protagonist in this heartbreaking collection of stories finds his way to a confession stool at the bar. They find no solutions to their ills, just a sensitive ear that has heard it all before but is willing to listen once again." — Rigoberto González, former president of the executive board of directors of the National Book Critics Circle, special to the El Paso Times

A must read
By J. Koester
Amazing. This was a book of seven short stories. It was such an entertaining read that I probably could have read the whole book in a day or two. But each story was so powerful, after each one I just put the book down and thought about it for a while. I read the book over seven days, a story each night.

This book hasn't received many rave reviews, so after each amazing chapter, I found myself contemplating why that was. I decided that perhaps the book was too melodramatic or not subtle enough for some, and indeed, after I finished, I sought out some reviews and that does appear to be the complaint. What can I say? I'm not a big fan of subtle. Life isn't subtle.

Just before Kentucky Club, I read the critics' short-story favorite "Tenth of December" by George Saunders. I gave it four stars. It had some great stories, but a couple of clunkers. "Kentucky Club" had seven great stories, and I dare say all seven hit me in the gut more than "Tenth." Great stuff.

Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club
By Joanne Austin
I really enjoyed reading a book about the area in which I live. I've known some people who could have been the characters in this excellent written book. I was so compelled by the stories that I read it quickly. Sometimes I felt like an observer, even feeling the pain of certain characters.

seven punches in the gut that make you feel the pain of the writer
By DosAguilas
Oh man, this book.

Everything does begin and end with the Kentucky Club, a series of dark, somber, yet beautiful stories about life, love and death on both sides of the river. A must-read for any person from those Borderlands, and anyone from El Paso to Brownsville can find something there to relate to. Some stories had me tearing up, for sure, and any writer can sympathize with the ideal of chasing the dragon.

both the cover and binding are of superior quality to the traditional hard cover
By Gary M Robins
This new translation of the Histories by Herodotus, is a timeless gem. The works shows new nuances lost in past translations, and is clearer in content and context than other translations I have read.
Personally I purchased the library edition, as I expect to read it and use it as reference for many years. With this edition, both the cover and binding are of superior quality to the traditional hard cover, as are the pages.
I highly recommend this version for students and classics buffs. If the price is unseemly, go for either the hard cover or paperback translations, you will be happy with this translation of Herodotus

The best edition of this classic
By Gary Menchen
I would give 5 stars, except for some design and layout issues: the notes are at the rear of the book, very inconvenient, and the margins are a bit narrow for such a thick book. And I miss the traditional OUP blue cloth binding. The translation itself was modern, conversational, I'm glad I picked this edition to read.

GREAT!!!
By A Customer
I thought this was a fantastic book. It shows not only insights into the lives of people from 2500 years ago, but shows how little our motivations have changed. Every digression by Herodotus is not only pardonable, but entertaining.
This translation is very readable compared to those others which I only started and put down. I have no ability to assess the accuracy of the translation, however.

Great info - Lacking an index
By Ryan S.
This book is a great top-line summary of all four ASHRAE books, approximate ventilation standards, and I am constantly using the first few pages of equations and conversions. The rules of thumb are well thought out and the design standards are excellent thought provokers for design - a great book for an HVAC specialist - or in my case, someone preparing for the Mechanical PE Exam, HVAC focus (again - the equation section was extremely helpful!)

My biggest complaint about this book is that it lacks a solid index. If you are looking for a topic, you must flip through the table of contents and hopefully find what you want - that's the primary reason I can't give it a higher rating! This book won't displace your ASHRAE books...you'll still need them for sure, but it can certainly be a great supplement and "quick" reference book for sure!

A Must-Have for Mechanical Design
By John Haymond
Are you collecting all of the most crucial mechanical design information and putting it in a three-ring binder? If so, throw it away and get this book! It has absolutely the most comprehensive collection of mechanical design information availible. Along with the ASHRAE handbooks, this is all you need for reference material.

Every thing you need
By Stephen S. Clement
I have been designng HVAC systems for over 35 years, during that time i have accumlated much in the way of reference materials, formulas, etc. Now I discover this book and wish it had been there with me at the start. If you're in the early days of your career, this is the one book you should get. It is extremely well organized and will save you lots of time sizing and specifying materials and equipment.

Regina Williams rolled over and stared up at the peeling paint on the ceiling of her bedroom and smiled.

Two weeks. That was how long she and Zack had been living in the little bungalow on Cherry Street. Even with the endless projects to do, and the sparse furnishings, they'd found joy moving into their very first home.

Of course, there were thirty years of payments ahead, even with Lori's help as co-signer and a good interest rate. That was as far as Gina would let her wealthy big sister go. She had to do this on her own. She had to prove to herself and her son they could be independent.

She had a good start, with her staging business and thrift shop and new friends and now, a wonderful place to live. Destiny, Colorado, was a great small town to raise her seven-year-old son. Zack was thriving in school and he was making friends. He was finally coming out of his shell, and maybe putting their old life where it belonged. In the past.

She climbed out of bed, slipped on her robe as she walked into the hall. She hesitated at Zack's door, then decided to put on coffee first. In the kitchen, she drew back the curtains at the French doors that overlooked the backyard.

This was the view that had sold her on the house—also the acre of land out back. Springtime in Colorado was an array of color and she had already planned out her flower garden in her head.

Right now she'd better get her busy day started. Coffee made, she walked down the hall, knocked on her son's door and opened it. "Rise and shine, kiddo." No response. Zack had always been a slow starter. She went across the hall to the bathroom and turned on the light, then the shower.

"Come on, Zack," she called. "I need to get to work and you have school." She walked back to the bunk beds, to find the top bunk empty. So she glanced under to the lower bed, but no child.

"Zack," she called, and pushed around the blankets. "Honey, we don't have time to play around. So come out of hiding."

Fear began to build as she glanced around the room. That was when she saw the curtains blowing from the open window. She rushed over to find the screen missing.

"No, God. No!" Her heart stopped then started racing as she frantically checked the closet, then under the bed, calling her son.

"Zack. Oh, God. Where are you? Please come out." Even as she pleaded, something in the back of her mind told her that her worst nightmare had come true. She returned to the bed, jerked back the blankets and found the proof. A crumpled piece of paper.

A familiar feeling of helplessness hit her. Hard. Instinctively Gina knew it was a note from her ex-husband. A shiver ran through her as she picked it up and read, "I found you, babe. Now I got what you want. You'll be hearing from me."

Grady Fletcher parked his truck in front of Destiny's sheriff's office and glanced up and down First Street. Mid-morning and the main street was busy with people going about their business, paying no attention to him. Just how he liked it.

He pulled up the collar of his coat and climbed out. He checked the area once again. Although he knew he was safe, old habits died hard. "Stay," he said to his trusted companion.

The German shepherd, Scout, sat in his spot in the backseat. The retired military working dog's ears perked up, waiting for his command. Grady gave a hand signal and the animal lay down. "Be right back, boy."

Grady was adjusting to his new life, too. Suddenly becoming a civilian after twenty years in the army wasn't an easy transition, especially after his last tour of duty. So temporarily living at his grandfather's old cabin was a good thing. It gave him time to heal physically and think about the future. He'd loved the solitude he found in the San Juan Mountains until he found there was a trespasser on his land.

He was going to let the sheriff handle it.

Grady walked through the front door and the room was a buzz of activity. He removed his cowboy hat and looked around. He could sense something was wrong. That was when he caught sight of the small dark-haired woman seated next to the desk. Worry was evident on her face, along with her tears. He decided his business could wait and started to leave when Reed Larkin came out of his office.

The woman stood and hurried to the sheriff. "Please, Reed, we need to start looking for Zack right now."

"And we will, Gina. First, I had to issue an Amber Alert on the boy, and find a description of Eric's lastknown vehicle." He glanced over the paper. "That was a 1998 primer-gray Ford truck, Colorado license." He read off the numbers. "I have all the state agencies involved in the search, Gina."

That description sparked Grady's interest. He walked up to the twosome. "Maybe I can help."

They both turned to him, but his attention went to the pretty brunette with the wide green eyes. Grady quickly turned to the sheriff, shielding his injured side.

"Hey, Grady, I haven't seen you in town for a while."

"There's been no need, until today. You're looking for a gray truck? I might know where you can find it."

Gina forced herself to draw in her next breath as she looked up at the giant of a man. He had a head full of sandy-brown hair that curled in thick waves. His dark eyes were deep-set and edged with tiny lines. His chiseled jaw was firm and clean-shaved. She caught a glimpse of an angry red scar on the side of his neck.

Gina gasped. "Where?"

Suddenly the man turned his intense gaze on her. Her first instinct was to back away from the intimidating man, but she forced herself to listen to what he had to say.

She forced herself to move closer. "Did you see a little boy, Mr…?"

"It's Fletcher, ma'am. Grady Fletcher. There's a truck with that description on my grandfather's property. But I haven't seen anyone."

The sheriff spoke up. "This is Gina Williams, Grady. Her seven-year-old son has been taken by his father. Eric Lowell was recently released from prison for drug possession and abuse. He kidnapped the boy from his home sometime during the night. We believe he's dangerous, so any help would be appreciated. Where did you see the vehicle?"

Grady nodded. "On the northeast section of my grandfather's property," he told them. "The truck is partly hidden off the road just below Rocky Top Ridge."

Reed Larkin frowned. "Where your granddad's old mines are?"

The man nodded. "As far as I can tell the truck has been there a few days. I came in to report it. I figured they were thinking the mine is abandoned, or they're trying to jump Fletch's old claim."

"Oh, God," Gina gasped and turned to the sheriff. "Eric's been in town that long, stalking us?"

"It's okay, Gina. We're going to get him." He looked back at Grady. "When was the last time you saw the truck?"

"At dawn this morning," the man said.

Reed nodded. "Did he see you?"

"Not unless he was out walking around early. There wasn't anyone in the truck when I found it."

"Good, we have a possible location," the sheriff said. "My bet is he's holed up in one of the old mines. Can you take us there, Grady?"

He shrugged. "It's pretty rough terrain, but my dog might be able to pick up the trail. Are you and your men experienced hikers?"

Larkin nodded. "We've all had survival training. I hope the weather holds out today."

They started to walk away. Gina went after them. "Wait," she called. "Please, take me with you."

Reed went to her. "Gina, no. You can't handle the climb."

She blinked. "You have no idea what I can handle, Reed. My son is up there with a man who swore he'd get even with me. I'm not going to stand by and wait while he takes his revenge out on Zack."

The sheriff shook his head. "It's not safe."

"I can do this. And I know Eric. I know what pushes his buttons. Besides, he doesn't want Zack, or he'd be on the road heading for parts unknown."

She exchanged a glance with Grady Fletcher. "He wants me." She stood straight. "And as long as my son is safe, I'm willing to make a trade."

Minutes later, Grady stood out of the way as the sheriff made arrangements to leave. It hadn't taken long for Reed to give in to the mother's plea. Grady didn't like this plan, not one bit. Take this woman with them. No way.

He shook his head. He didn't need this problem. All he had to do was take them up to the mine, then leave the sheriff to handle the rest. Right. He wasn't made that way. In the army he'd become a take-charge-guy as a means of survival. But that was before the explosion, before he gave up his career. He shoved the memory aside and turned his thoughts to the problem at hand.

This Lowell must be a crazy bastard to come in and steal his own kid. It definitely could turn out badly.

Just then Gina Williams came out of Reed Larkin's office. She'd changed into hiking boots laced up at the bottom of her jeans. A sweatshirt under a quilted down vest would keep her warm against the cool day. She had her hair pulled back into a ponytail and a wide-brimmed hat to protect her from the elements. Springtime in Colorado was unpredictable. It could mean anything from rain to a full-blown snowstorm.

A blonde woman walked out behind the boy's mother. He recognized her as Lorelei Hutchinson Yeager. She'd pretty much owned this town since her father's death last year. Grady knew about the Hutchinsons only because of his grandfather's stories. Old Fletch had a strong dislike for any members of the town's founding family. It had something to do with disagreements over land rights.

Grady stood straighter when the two women walked his way. Ms. Williams had a stuffed toy in her hand.

"Mr. Fletcher, this is my sist...

I read this one in one night. It was so good I couldn't put it down. I have read books by this author before and they have all been good. This one with the little boy and the wounded soldier was just exceptionally good. It was one I definitely will reread again. Patricia Thayne is one of a kind author and has some great books out there.

Another winner
By KeFeuerstein
By this gifted author whose stories I love. In the last book it was Lori and Jace in this book Gina gets her story along with her son Zack and X military Grady Fletcher. The road to happiness is filled with bumps but like so many things in life Gina and Grady discover that together they are stronger.

Amazon.com Review
At this point in his career, you can almost visualize producers camped-out beside playwright Nicky Silver's door. Almost everything he writes gets produced, generally Off-Broadway, and almost everything produced gets raves and goes on to be staged at resident companies everywhere. Etiquitte and Vitriol is a rare opportunity to experience the uniquely neurotic comedy of Silver, both before his huge success when he was shaping his instrument, and after he becomes one of the most widely produced contemporary American playwrights. The latter two are his hits, The Food Chain and Pterodactyls. The earlier pieces are, Fat Men in Skirts (about cannibals, no less) and Free Will & Wanton Lust. He hasn't had a Broadway show, yet, but if you want to get a sense if his range, this volume is an admirable introduction.

From the Back Cover
The first collection by a master of razor-sharp wit and black humor, Etiquette and Vitriol brings together two of Silver's highly acclaimed and successful works - the long-running Off-Broadway hit The Food Chain and the award-winning Pterodactyls - with two earlier works - Fat Men in Skirts and Free Will & Wanton Lust - which helped establish Silver as one of the leading comic voices of his generation.

Up and Coming Jewish Playwright Deserves to be Read
By BPD
Nicky Silver's work will in time be noticed by the masses. For now, his plays will intrigue and entertain the relatively small number of people that pays allegiance to them. Etiquette and Vitriol is a well-shaped, fully engaging product. And it's funny. Extremely. It's hillarious really. And textured and smart. The work brings in characters of all sizes, and plants them together upon the stage, focusing on relationships -- familial, social, sexual... Each of the plays is hardly cluttered however. We are given a few figures to work with and thus these figures must be and are quite complex. They carry with them a certain authenticity often unrealized by many a playwright. Silver's work is impressive and sure to make jealous any aspiring artist. Buy the book. You'll love it.

He's more like GOLD than SILVER
By Stephen A. Lance
When I was a theatre student I rarely found plays that excited me to actually want to read, direct, or act in. I was on a crusade one year buying script after script after script. Usually I would be bored and put them down after the first scene. When I picked up Etiquette and Vitriol I think I almost died. Here was a gay playwright who didn't write your normal "I'm ok and I'm gay" play. He writes about the deconstruction of families and relationships. He has an amazing ability to give you something so horribly disgusting and then to make you laugh at it. Like in FAT MEN IN SKIRTS which is a dark comedy about a mother and son who are trapped on a desert island and their struggles to survive and their inability to acclimate back to civilized culture. At the end of the first act the mother is raped by the son and in the back ground you here Bali Hai from SOUTH PACIFIC, if you get the reference of the song there is almost no way you can stop from laughing but then you realize what you are laughing at. That is the brilliance of his writing. I highly recommend all of his works!

Wonderful Insight
By A Customer
This collection of plays has the ability to satisfy both the comic and tragic needs of any dramatic reader. Silver's ability to write dark comedy is perhaps unparalleled by any living playwright. He has the skill to smoothly draw the reader into an entertaining story, and then to slowly put the reader off-guard until you find yourself wrapped up in the middle of a very dark narrative.
Silver uses many different theatrical approaches in the collection. Most of his plays are a mix of dialogue and monolgue, and he often takes modernist perspectives of staging. In any given play he will engage two opposing dramatic styles -- such as Noel Coward v. Berthold Brecht in Free Will and Wanton Lust -- to accentuate his message. The playwright's language flows easily and the dialogue is smooth. While some characters at times appear to have a forced three-dimensionality, the reader feels that Silver is doing this on purpose.
The greatest benefit of Silver's gift is that, through comedy and the guise of comedy, he is able to present otherwise difficult subjects to us, such as deeper meanings of love and hate, loneliness, self-denial, and spiritual needs. Recommended for all theatre fans.

Review
"These books are highly recommended additions to the literature on conifers. They contain a treasure trove of information, and a strong editorial hand has brought an unusual degree of symmetry and evenness of treatment to the topics. It is easy to find one's way around each chapter and either to browse or to focus... Both books will find substantial use for physiological ecologist and others interested in conifers and forest ecology."
--TRENDS IN ECOLOGY & EVOLUTION
"Ecophysiology of Coniferous Forests is not a compendium of biological minutia; rather, it is a compilation of thought-provoking ideas and relationships assembled by teams of authors whose challenge was to provide 'a current, comprehensive, state-of-the-art treatment of the field of conifer ecophysiology... a valuable resource for research scientists, academicians, and those interested in the causes and consequences of coniferous forest ecosystem processes."
--S.B. McLaughlin, Environmental Sciences Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in BIOSCIENCE
