One of The New York Times Book Review's 10 Best Books of the Year

On the morning of December 26, 2004, on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, Sonali Deraniyagala lost her parents, her husband, and her two young sons in the tsunami she miraculously survived. In this brave and searingly frank memoir, she describes those first horrifying moments and her long journey since. She has written an engrossing, unsentimental, beautifully poised account: as she struggles through the first months following the tragedy, furiously clenched against a reality that she cannot face and cannot deny; and then, over the ensuing years, as she emerges reluctantly, slowly allowing her memory to take her back through the rich and joyous life she’s mourning, from her family’s home in London, to the birth of her children, to the year she met her English husband at Cambridge, to her childhood in Colombo; all the while learning the difficult balance between the almost unbearable reminders of her loss and the need to keep her family, somehow, still alive within her.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, March 2013: In an unblinking act of storytelling, Sonali Deraniyagala ruthlessly chronicles the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami that horrifically snatched from her all that mattered. Throughout this fierce and furious book, I kept wondering how someone who lost so much could write about it with such power, economy and grace. At first, she shrieks and grieves openly, angrily; for years she remains stunned and staggered, shamed by “the outlandish truth of me.” Then, slowly, she allows herself to remember, sharing vivid glimpses of her past. We see, hear, and smell two rowdy little boys, their brotherly scuffling, their muddy shoes and grass stains. By confronting and recreating moments that make us laugh and weep, we accept their absence and root for the author not to quit. Difficult to describe, tricky to recommend, this is a bold and wondrous book. In a wounded voice that manages to convey the snide, sarcastic, funny, and fatalistic personality that survives beneath the pain, Deraniyagala slowly pieces together the elements that represent the life--the lives--she lost. And she brings them back. For us, for her, for them. So brave, so beautiful, in these pages Deraniyagala’s family is brilliantly alive. And so is she. --Neal Thompson

From Booklist
It was a festive time. Economist Deraniyagala, her economist husband (they met at Cambridge), and their two young sons flew from London to Sri Lanka to spend the winter holidays with her parents. They were all staying in a hotel near their favorite national park on December 26, 2004, the day of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami. Deraniyagala describes their bewilderment as they flee the hotel and her terror as they are swept up by the 30-foot-high, racing wave that brutally changed everything. Only Deraniyagal survived. In rinsed-clear language, she describes her ordeal, surreal rescue, and deep shock, attaining a Didionesque clarity and power. We hold tight to every exquisite sentence as, with astounding candor and precision, she tracks subsequent waves of grief, from suicidal despair to persistent fear, attempts to drown her pain in drink, “helpless rage,” guilt and shame, and paralyzing depression. But here, too, are sustaining tides of memories that enable her to vividly, even joyfully, portray her loved ones. An indelible and unique story of loss and resolution written with breathtaking refinement and courage. --Donna Seaman

Review
In her unflinching writing you live through the horror and despair, but also feel her self-generated repair and the promise of survival -- Harriet Walter The Week

stunning !
By jayjay
I have to say, this book shows the absolute darkness of humans when they face the unthinkable natural disasters. This book is brutully honest, with such vivid discription about almost every single detail of the Tsunami that the author was encountering: the deadly smell of it, the weight, the color...

After reading many memoirs writing about similar survial stories, I honestly think this is one of the shortest and the best ones. I simply could not put it down.when I just finished the first chapter, I could feel the desperation, hopelessness, and numbness from the author, like a mental picture was made in my mind about everything that she has to learn to understand, and eventually, surrenders to.

In my view, POWERFUL is the best word to describe about this book.

"Couldn't I somehow stay suspended in my confusion?"
By Amelia Gremelspacher
Confusion was the only thing to cling to in the hours after the tsunami in Sri Lanka. Somali had seen the ocean coming for land and had fled with her children, Vik and Mal, and her husband Steve. She didn't pause to alert her parents. She didn't pause for those left behind. Having been picked up by a Jeep, the waters caught them nonetheless. Bin the dark swirling of mud and water, she grabs a limb and survives. For months afterwards, it is her survival that is the tragedy. Family gone, she longs to join them.

We have become inured by the overwhelming number of stories of horror and tragedy. Perhaps we have thought to ourselves what we might do. Surely, we would sweep our parents up. Nor seeing the ocean in so strange a fashion, would be one of those who fled early. We might have had a better plan to survive. But in the end this is not the case. This book impels us to face the fact that given the overwhelming, we are helpless.

The author talks intimately of her days, months, years following the loss of her family. The prose is revelatory but not melodramatic. Sonali's story is told honestly with her attempts of suicide, her drinking, and her despair. She doesn't hide her frank anger with those who did survive. She doesn't rationalize the depths of despair and the inward turning of grief. It has been said that humans cannot grasp the horror of thousands of deaths, but can come to understand it by learning a story in depth. This book puts truth to this perception.

Painful, impactful, courageous. . .read it!
By Susanne
This short book is one I will never forget. The writer tells us in simple, straightforward language how she managed to survive, and eventually, live, after losing her entire family in the 2005 tsunami. I don't think I've ever read anyone write as simply and stunningly as this - about extreme loss. At each juncture in the months, then years after the tsunami, readers learn how Deraniyagala coped by shutting out parts of her pre-tsunami life, and how she very gradually let memories in. She offers no magical answers, nothing but her years of dealing with this horrendous loss.

I read alot, about 70 books a year, and very very few get five stars. Five stars for me means the book goes way beyond "well-written", or "good story" to the level of impactful in my own life. I can't think of another book about loss that resonates so much - -
I have nothing comparable to her loss but her words help me view my own losses through different lenses.

I will remember this book just as I will always remember Joan Didon's Year of Magical Thinking. . .it's unforgettable. Deraniyagala displays unbelievable courage.

not the usual Deborah Simmons fare
By Giselle Grell
Nicholas de Burgh's story was eagerly awaited. I started reading Ms. Simmons and about the de Burgh's in the 1990's. LOVED those books and couldn't wait for Nicholas to "come-of-age" so that I can read about his adventures.......... the storyline wasn't bad, but it was drawn out, the writing didn't flow, it seemed rushed, an adversary was killing everyone in sight, however our heroes didn't come under fire, there was talk of an abusive Uncle, before we could meet him, he turns up dead; a rogue Templar knight is out for them, he turns up dead. No expansion to the storyline, we heard of a character, but nothing was developed and all of a sudden they were dead. Meanwhile our little troupe is aimlessly wandering the countryside, meeting Monks who act suspiciously and darkly, hiding sinister secrets it seems, then after they break into a secret passage, they find a Monk who welcomes them and starts to pour out the story of what was hidden in the secret grotto they find themselves in..... I found myself wondering (as I did with Renold de Burgh's story "The Dark Knight") whether Deborah Simmons even wrote it.

Fantastic Read
By LAS Reviewer
With Nicholas, Emery had some wonderfully stable times even amongst the chaos that seem to lurk around every corner. The troubling times help to bring these unlikely companions together, but the thing that brought them together may also be the one thing that can tear them apart.

Nicholas is everything you would want in a knight of his time. He is strong, cunning, and stubborn in his resolve. Most of all he is a man of his word and when he makes a vow no matter the size he intends to see it through the end even at the risk of his life. These characteristics would make any woman swoon in his presence. Though, for a while I had to question if he was dim witted since he seemed to have difficulty seeing Emery for who and what she truly was, even when his squire Guy was so quick to pick on the subtleties. I quickly learned that he was not dim witted, but instead like many, he could not see past what he wanted to see to learn the truth about what was in front of him. While this may seem like something negative to another, I appreciated that it showed that he may not be as perfect as others perceived the De Burgh family members to be.

Emery’s resolve to help her brother no matter the cost is extremely noble. It is clear from the very beginning that the love for her brother has been her driving force in many instances. While the love for a sibling may be what made her start her journey, it may not necessarily be the driving force in the end. Another enduring quality of Emery’s is her ability to keep up with the boys, yet display her femininity depending on what the situation calls for. At some times I found myself forgetting the woman underneath the cloths and the boy everyone else seen where one and the same. It also made me want to learn more about her both past and present.

This story was truly a incomparable experience for me. Historical romance is a genre which is fairly new to me and, in order to engage my interest really need to have some unique aspect to pique my interest. What attracted me first to this was that the author incorporated the Templar knights in the story. While the involvement of the Templar’s may have been what made me start the story I can honestly say that the author’s dynamic plotlines and entertaining characters are what drove me to finish the story. The various twist and turns the characters must face both from external factors as well as their own personal journeys kept me reading well into the late night hours, and had me opening my eyes in the morning to read more. It was a delight to able to experience this other world and I could actually picture these historical characters wandering the world we once lived in.

Strong Characters but Boring Story
By Jayme K.
After reading the other books in the De Burgh series, I was eager for the final book but I was highly disappointed. The main characters were both strong (as usual) and normally I don't mind the historical aspect of the Templars & other medieval religious orders, but I found myself incredibly bored and struggling to get through it. I only was able to get to chapter 6 before just having to skip and read the last 2 chapters. I got a nice summary of all that had happened and it ended well.

Sky Boys: How They Built the Empire State Building, by Deborah Hopkinson

This Boston Globe–Horn Book Honor Book and ALA-ALSC Notable Children's Book provides a riveting brick-by-brick account of how one of the most amazing accomplishments in American architecture came to be. It’s 1930 and times are tough for Pop and his son. But look! On the corner of 34th Street and 5th Avenue, a building straight and simple as a pencil is being built in record time. Hundreds of men are leveling, shoveling, hauling. They’re hoisting 60,000 tons of steal, stacking 10 million bricks, eating lunch in the clouds. And when they cut ribbon and the crowds rush in, the boy and his father will be among the first to zoom up to the top of the tallest building in the world and see all of Manhattan spread at their feet.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4–Hopkinson and Ransome chronicle the construction of this famous building through the eyes of a young boy. The present-tense text gives the book a true You are there feel as the author describes both the actual building process and its significance as a symbol of hope during the Depression era. The pacing is never rushed, but at the same time it moves along at an energetic clip that matches the speed that characterized the construction of this National Historic Landmark. Ransomes stunning oil paintings vary in perspective as readers look up at what was once the tallest building in the world, and then down from dizzying heights as workers perch on girders on the 47th floor, feeding pigeons while taking a break for beef stew and coffee. An authors note reflects the painstaking and careful research done by both author and illustrator to ensure as authentic a presentation as possible. This is a fascinating look at a slice of American history and a worthwhile addition to any collection.–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Crisp, lyrical free verse and bold paintings celebrate the skill and daring of those who constructed the Empire State Building. During the Great Depression, a young boy learns about plans for the building. As the tower rises, the boy visits the site with his unemployed father and sees in the emerging skyscraper "a symbol of hope / in the darkest of times." The second-person voice occasionally feels like a clumsy reach for connection with the audience: "It's the end of winter, / and your pop's lost his job." But Hopkinson makes the construction details thrilling in skillfully integrated lines, filled with statistics: "This steel is strong and new / only eighty hours old." Ransome's powerful acrylic paintings show the building in all stages of construction, and includes the workers' perilous views. A unique, memorable title, this will enhance poetry and history units and combine well with Susan Goodman's excellent Skyscraper and Connie Ann Kirk's Sky Dancer (both 2004). Gillian Engberg

"So Tall It Will Scrape the Sky"
By M. Allen Greenbaum
In Depression-era New York City, dreams collide with reality. Our unnamed young narrator's father has just lost his job, and so the boy must wander the harsh, cold streets of Manhattan, looking for firewood. However, one day near 34th and 5th streets, he sees a dream unfold, as 3,000 men construct a symbol of triumph and tenacity: the 102-story Empire Stae Building.

The book is magnificent: Powerful images, poetic language, and construction scenes and details merge into a dramatic tale that's both historic and personal. The boy (and sometimes his father) joins other New Yorkers who look in awe at the evolving building. Ms. Hopkinson uses facts and simple, strong words in her descriptions: We see men sinking "210 massive steel columns" 55-feet into the ground, building "a steel forest" that "can bear the full weight of this giant-to-be: 365,000 tons." Flatbeds carry steel beams "from the fiery furnaces of Pittsburgh" through the streets, looking "river surging through the concrete canyons of Manhattan." While strong and almost terse, the writing is somehow concommitantly lyrical. The story teems with action ("hoisting, swinging, spinning") and facts that will fascinate any young reader (and most adults as well).

Two-page action sequences set within the story slow down time so that one can appreciate the danger, the men's skill, and the scope of the project. We see four men (there are no female workers--accurate as far as I know), working as a team to rivet steel girders together: The "Heater Man" tosses hot metal to "the Catcher," who fits it into the girder hole steadied by the "Bucker-up," finally hammered into place by "the Gunman." For adults, it's is a testosterone kick; kids will enjoy the heroism and the sheer grandeur of the construction leading to the finished tower.

Although the city is not as dirty-looking, nor the people as poor as one might expect, there's still a Depression-based realism that doesn't sanitize the workers' hard lives. In one of her best lines, Ms. Hopkinson writes that while each man works as fast as possible, he does so knowing that hundreds down below him would "take his place over his spot in a flash. Yet knowing that the quicker he finishes, the sooner he'll be back in line himself, waiting and desparate for work." There's a subtle but unmistakeable contrast between the gleaming building--and the hard-working but generally vigorous men working on the gleaming building, and those hundreds below them. Another wonderful two-page spread shows the building reaching skyward between June and November. culminating in an illustration of 15 men astride the building's top in March 1931, proud and even gleeful, but also tired.

James E. Ransome's pictures are uniformly spectacular, and it culminates in his noil painting of the Empire State Building at dawn, majestically overlooking the island and beyond, towering over everything else. WE also see the golden placque of the building inside the lobby, the apprehension of the boy and his dad as they ride the elevator to the top, the father's hope ("If we can do this, we can do anything") and one last nighttime view as they head back home, their heads and hearts uplifted ("Look, Pop, we can see it from here.").

'Sky Boys' concludes with some facts about the building and the making of the book, including an acknowledgement to the EMpire State Building Archive at Columbia for the endpaper photographs of workers in dangerous positions. Certainly one of the top 20 books I've read this year, the dramatic words and pictures ensure that this wil be a favorite at home or school.

Note: A good companion book is "Pop's Bridge," a fictionalized history of peril and comraderie while building the Golden Gate Bridge.

Dream big
By M. Heiss
The story of the building of the Empire State Building, told through the eyes of a Depression-era child. Who wouldn't love to be one of those builders? Beautiful, well-done book about a triumph of American engineering and a can-do attitude.

Loaded with color illustrations which bring to life the builder's experience
By Midwest Book Review
Celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Empire State Building's construction is Sky Boys: How They Built The Empire State Building. While vintage black and white photos from the era greet the eye on the inside and back cover pages, the book is loaded with color illustrations which bring to life the builder's experience. The journey to Depression-era Manhattan and a boy who watches its construction brings the promise, hope and allure of the Empire State Building to life.

Geomorphology, by Robert S. Anderson, Suzanne P. Anderson

This textbook provides a modern, quantitative and process-oriented approach to equip students with the tools to understand geomorphology. Insight into the interpretation of landscapes is developed from basic principles and simple models, and by stepping through the equations that capture the essence of the mechanics and chemistry of landscapes. Boxed worked examples and real-world applications bring the subject to life for students, allowing them to apply the theory to their own experience. The book covers cutting edge topics, including the revolutionary cosmogenic nuclide dating methods and modeling, highlights links to other Earth sciences through up-to-date summaries of current research, and illustrates the importance of geomorphology in understanding environmental changes. Setting up problems as a conservation of mass, ice, soil, or heat, this book arms students with tools to fully explore processes, understand landscapes, and to participate in this rapidly evolving field.

Review
"... this book is terrific! ... a model of what a textbook should be, and the first place I'd send a student or colleague to get them excited about landscapes and how we study them." Chris Paola, Professor of Geology & Geophysics, St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, Minneapolis

"This much needed, skillfully crafted text will be welcomed by the geomorphology community. ... the text can be used for an introductory course, or as part of a more advanced course. ... The overall reaction of my students using a draft version has been very positive." David Jon Furbish, Professor & Chair, Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, Vanderbilt University

"A wonderful, wide ranging review of the modern science of geomorphology." Niels Hovius, Lecturer, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge

"The book is both authoritative and accessible, encouraging students (and instructors) to think creatively and precisely about how the landscape evolves. Unlike previous geomorphology texts, it provides a consistent approach for defining and solving models for the full range of features found on the surface of the Earth." Peter R. Wilcock, Professor & Associate Chair, Department of Geography & Environmental Engineering, Johns Hopkins University

"It is an excellent book, especially with respect to incorporating the basic science and physics of the processes outlined in the main text as well as providing an accessible narrative explanation of the different environments covered. As such, I intend to strongly recommend ... it to my first year Earth: Portrait of a Planet module ... as one of three key texts for the module. I will emphasise this text for those students on the BSc Geography and BSc Environmental Sciences ... programmes ... as being useful throughout their undergraduate degree. In particular it will be a help for second year modules Global Environmental Change, Earth Systems Cycles and Research Strategies in Physical Environments, as well as providing preliminary reading for specialist modules in the third year." Dr Simon Carr, School of Geography, Queen Mary University of London

"... an excellent book, especially with respect to incorporating the basic science and physics of the processes outlined in the main text as well as providing an accessible narrative explanation of the different environments covered." Dr Simon Carr, Queen Mary University of London

"...one of the best sources of information on process geomorphology that this reviewer has seen in many years. ... This reviewer wishes this book had been available when he was a student. ...Highly recommended." CHOICE

About the Author
Bob Anderson has taught geomorphology since 1988, first at University of California, Santa Cruz, and now at University of Colorado, Boulder. Bob has now studied most parts of landscapes, from the glaciated tips to the coastal toes, with significant attention to sediment transport mechanics, interaction of geophysical and geomorphic processes to shape mountain ranges, evolution of bedrock canyons and glaciated landscapes. He has participated in the development of a new tool kit that employs cosmogenic radionucides to establish timing in the landscape. He develops numerical models of landscapes that honor both field observations and first principles of conservation; these models in turn have served to hone his field efforts. In the course of this academic adventure, he was founding editor of Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface, co-authored the textbook Tectonic Geomorphology (2000, Wiley-Blackwell) with Doug Burbank, and has been honoured by election as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.

Suzanne Anderson has been on the faculty at University of Colorado, Boulder since 2004, where she teaches courses on Geomorphology, Earth's Critical Zone, Landscapes and Water, and Glaciers and Permafrost. Her awards include an Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor award at University of California, Berkeley, a NASA Graduate Student Fellowship in Global Change Research, and an NSF Earth Sciences Post-doctoral Fellowship. Suzanne's research has taken her to Svalbard, Alaska, Oregon and Nepal, and has focused on interactions between chemical weathering, hydrology, and physical erosion mechanisms. She currently directs the Boulder Creek Critical Zone Observatory, an NSF environmental observatory based at the University of Colorado and involving researchers from four institutions and agencies. Suzanne was editor of Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine Research from 2004-2006, and served as an associate editor of Journal of Geophysical Research - Earth Surface from 2002-2006.

Geomorphology as a mature science
By Herman Jackson
I have seen the future (of geomorphology) and it's in this book.

Today the emphasis in geomorphology is on understanding of the processes. This book focuses on those processes with quantitative description/explanation being the objective. The list of topics is reasonably complete (view the Table of Contents). Some topics such as "Tectonic Geomorphology" and "Dating Methods" are a bit unusual but reading the chapters leaves no doubt about their permanence in this book.

The things I believe will cause this book to be widely used are the layout, the depth of the quantitative/mathematical explanation of processes, and the chapter problem sets.

Each chapter begins with a half-page overview that should help focus the reader on the intended reason for that chapter's existence. At the end of each chapter is a one page summary that puts major points made in the chapter into perspective. Finally, each chapter has a problem set with mainly quantitative problems , but some thought questions requiring integration/extrapolation of material from the chapter. There are none of the classic topographic map or aerial photo type questions. That shouldn't present a problem in the classroom as older faculty surely have their own favorites of these.

Historically geomorphology has been largely a descriptive science with math limited primarily to quantifying the description. Here the math is in the nature of explanation - much as it would appear in a physics or engineering text. Opening the book randomly (P. 333), in a discussion of landslides I find an explanation of failure angle as a function of the angle of internal friction. For geology students it is of more than passing interest that the fields of geomorphology and structural geology overlap. On page 377 a problem statement is: "Consider a thin flow of water on a smooth slope. The slope is 10 deg., and the thickness of the flow is measured to be 4 mm. Calculate the mean speed of the flow and assess whether the flow will be turbulent or laminar." Hello - geomorphology meets sedimentology.

I like the book - I like it a lot. But there are a couple of points that I found to be disappointing.

There is no glossary. Having been in the classroom for several decades now both as student and teacher I have learned to look first at the table of contents then the glossary. Due to the mathematical/engineering nature of this book the glossary is less necessary than it would be in a more classic approach, however I still think it is needed. And with text in digital form, construction of a glossary (preferably with page references so it also functions as an index) is only an editing job.

Because of my own history with geomorphology I would have liked to see at least a brief discussion of two topics. Despite the incompleteness of Davis' model of youth-maturity-old age, that generalization still has a great deal of utility and should be in the working toolkit of every student of geomorphology. Being a geologist one of the primary reasons I want my students to study geomorphology is to learn what the landforms reveal about the structure/stratigraphy of the bedrock. Though both of these items are present "between the lines" I think students should be introduced to them face-to-face.

Faculty considering this text are likely to face three major concerns:
1) "Missing material" - the classic and geologic stuff mentioned above
2) Student weakness - The text will provide a considerable challenge to students' knowledge/proficiency in math, physics, and chemistry.
3) Faculty weakness - The text will provide a considerable challenge to faculty knowledge/proficiency in math, physics, and chemistry.

In 1961, Adrian Scheidegger's "Theoretical Geomorphology" introduced the mode of analysis now brought to fruition in "Geomorphology: The Mechanics and Chemistry of Landscapes. If you realized as I did upon seeing that embryonic work that it was pointing to the future of geomorphology you'll be delighted to see in this book the same in early maturity.

I recommend this book without reservation for serious students and researchers in geomorphology as well as for persons venturing into the study of landscapes from the more quantitative branches of science. As an introductory text, the decision will depend strongly on my concerns #2 and #3 listed above.

Great text!
By K Sean Daniels
It is dense, but then, so is the subject. The processes are well explained and the equations are as well. I recommend this text to anyone studying this subject. A+++

Anderson & Anderson is a great undergraduate text or reference for the non-specialist
By Kevin
This text is a very clear and concise introduction to geomorphology. I am an engineer by training, and I very much appreciate the process-based focus of the book. Topics are up to date, incorporating research ideas and results that were still being introduced at the time of the book's writing. Anderson & Anderson is a great undergraduate text or reference for the non-specialist.

Sweet, seductive…and off-limits!

One rule has always worked for Elias Joss: keep your rivals close…but not too close. He didn't bring his family's construction company to new heights and incredible success by being naive. The only way he survived his playboy father's indiscretions was by learning to be careful and guarded. With his life all about work, there's just no room for play—especially when it comes to a certain too-tempting siren.

Nightclub owner Clarissa David is downright shocked to be attracted to Elias. Especially since their families share a scandalous past. Still, desire this strong can't be denied. Can Clarissa show him that the ruthless rules of business should never apply to love?

"I'm on my way…yes, yes. I promise I'll be there soon. What? Yes, yes, Terence was on time." Clarissa David spoke firmly yet softly into her phone's tiny receiver. Glancing toward the front of the town car, she sent a playful wave to the chauffeur who was enjoying a laugh over the conversation.

"You tell Terry not to take any of those back roads he likes to use." The female voice through the phone line was a stern one, but it was laced with a husky undercurrent, which brought a sensual element to the woman's tone.

"Auntie, I promise Terence is running all kinds of lights to get me there."

"You tell him to be careful, you hear?"

Clarissa's lashes settled down over her eyes as she winced, at once regretting the attempt at humor. "I was only teasing. He's being very careful." That time, Clarissa merely shook her head in Terence's direction.

The makings of a frown began to nudge the arch of Clarissa's brows. Of course she was used to her aunt's protective nature but even this was a bit much.

"Aunt Jaz, can't you at least give me a hint of what you need to talk about?" Clarissa worked hard to keep the frustration out of her voice.

"No, I can't!" Jazmina Beaumont's clipped phrase was punctuated by a low sigh. "Baby, no, I can't. I'm already taking a chance with having Terry bring you out here to see me about this."

"You know I'm starting to worry, right?" Clarissa's question harbored the same clipped tone Jaz had used earlier.

"Oh, don't do that. I promise you I'm not losin' my last bit of sense just yet but this ain't somethin' I want to talk about over the phone. Now stop asking questions and just get here."

"All right Auntie, all right. Calm down and I'll be there soon."

Jazmina expressed another low sigh. "I love you, baby."

The connection ended before Clarissa could return the sentiment. Regrettably, she didn't have long to mull over the particulars of the conversation. Terence was announcing their arrival just outside Philadelphia, at the stop Clarissa had asked him to make en route to her aunt's home.

"Terry, has Aunt J seemed short-tempered lately?" Clarissa asked absently while tucking her phone back into the beige leather tote she carried.

Terence Egerton laughed, the robust sound filling the car's spacious dark cabin. "You mean more short-tempered than she usually is?"

"Yeah." Clarissa's agreement carried on a gust of abrupt laughter. "She didn't sound quite like herself just now, though."

"Probably the usual mess. Maybe a little more of it." Terence drew to a halt, flashing the high beams to instruct a car facing him to go ahead with its left turn. "You know she's about to start that construction for the remodeling and then she's got them nosy committee people houndin' her about that award," he said.

Clarissa's laughter sounded more genuine. "You sound just like her!"

Terence scrunched his nose. "Now why am I not sure that's a compliment?"

Clarissa continued to laugh.

"So what lucky lady you planning on taking to the Reed House Jazz Supper in November?"

Elias Joss stood working his thumb against his palm in deep circular motions. "Looks like I'll be goin' alone since my date stood me up," he told his tailor.

Stanford Crothers chuckled while taking the measurements of Elias's inseam. "You sound put out over it." His observation carried a teasing element.

Elias couldn't help his grin. "It's not a boost to a man's ego to be stood up by his own mother." He managed to fake an agitated tone.

"Never took you for a mama's boy, kid."

"Stan, I swear, if you keep on rubbin' this in—"

"What? You'll tell her to turn me down, too?"

Elias laughed long and loudly with the man who would be escorting his mother to the annual dinner for the organization that benefitted Philadelphia's elderly.

"So has Lilia been talkin' about our date?" Stanford queried. He was seated on a stool where he worked on the cuffs of the trousers. At Eli's laughter rising again, the man gave a slow shake of his head which was covered by a neat salt-and-pepper afro. "So much hate," Stan groaned. "I won't force you to admit your mama's got herself a real catch."

"Whew." Eli feigned relief. "Yeah, Stan, thanks for not makin' me admit that."

"Sure thing, 'cause it's so sad when a younger man has to admit he don't have what it takes."

"I swear." Eli rolled his eyes and pretended to be at his limit with Stan's needling. "Having a suit made just isn't the pampering experience that it once was."

"Aah, kid, there's always the rack," Stan sang.

"Or another tailor," Eli playfully threatened.

"They'd never find the body."

The phone interrupted the laughter between the two men when its ringing emerged from somewhere in the depths of the downtown shop.

"Saved by the bell," Eli cheered.

"Watch those pins," Stan cautioned, pressing his hands to his thighs and pushing himself from the stool.

"Be back in a jiff."

Elias stepped down from the raised platform and padded around the room in his socks. Cloth swatches were pinned to the suit pattern adorning his tall, broad frame. Left on his own, he was soon at work with his phone—checking the emails and texts that had come through during the forty-five minutes of the tailoring appointment.

Elias was perusing his missed messages when the sound of humming wafted down from the wrought iron staircase that snaked into Stan's parlor from the sales floor of Crothers's Apparel and Alterations.

At first, Eli only idly listened to the vaguely familiar tune. He was still pretty involved with the phone. As the volume of the humming rose however, his attention veered toward the direction of the sound.

When a dainty pair of tan platform pumps appeared on the landing of the stairwell and Eli caught sight of the legs they were attached to, the phone was forgotten.

Slowly, he strolled closer. Sadly, further insight on the owner of the shapely stems was thwarted by the overhang of the wall.

The humming quieted. "Stan?"

Elias stepped back from the staircase and waited.

"Stan?"

Eli heard her call out again, watching as she made her way into the tailoring parlor.

"Stan?"

He heard the soft call once more as she took the last step down. Elias Joss's greenish-blue eyes gazed at the woman who left the stairs as though she were taking a light stroll. Her unhurried steps echoed faintly on the parlor's walnut flooring while she angled her head in an array of poses during her search for the proprietor.

Elias didn't bother to make his presence known. No doubt she would notice him soon. It had never been easy for him to blend into the shadows, so he had never tried.

Besides, Eli thought, the woman in his line of sight clearly had her mind set on seeking out Stan. Her steps picked up trace amounts of speed and sound as she searched around corners and the tall racks of clothing cluttering the fitting room.

Elias appreciated her preoccupation, for it allowed him the chance to observe her unaware. The phone vibrated once in his hand to signal a new text or email coming through. It was promptly ignored.

Using one word to describe Elias Joss, it would have to have been workaholic. Elias smiled at the familiar dig his partners never failed to sing in his presence. They knew him well enough, however, to agree that work always took a backseat when the opportunity arose to conduct an appraisal of the feminine form.

And this one certainly demanded a closer, longer look Elias decided. His uncommon gaze surveyed the abundant curves beneath the provocatively cut dress gloving the woman's Coke-bottle frame. Elias found himself appreciating the day's forecast. The chill of autumn had not yet set in and many were enjoying the unseasonable warmth of the climate.

The dress on Stanford's appealing visitor was appropriate enough for business wear yet Eli surmised that the woman in his midst couldn't have managed strictly business wear if she tried. Her body simply would not allow for that.

She wasn't quite short enough to be classed as such. He seriously wondered if the fullness of her ample bottom and bustline would even allow her to shop in the petite section. Elias cleared his throat to mask a softer, more basic sound which was gathering there. Subtle nudges of arousal were beginning to rattle his hormones.

The throat being cleared in the distance caught Clarissa David's ear and she turned suddenly, expecting to find Stanford Crothers. The man who met her gaze instead literally stopped her.

Taking a moment to size him up was the obvious next move. He definitely merited a closer, longer look. It was then that she heard the warning call of her name resounding in her head. The tone was reminiscent of the one Clarissa's aunt used whenever Clarissa had said, done or was contemplating doing something that would make her look like a fool. Besides, she had more important things to take care of than drooling over one of her tailor's clients. She did make a move toward the stranger, though. Perhaps he could help her locate the man in question.

"Hello." Clarissa nodded as she stepped closer and was again stopped by the extraordinary color of the stranger's eyes. The blue-green orbs against the warm, rich caramel color of his complexion was an interesting mix.

Okay this was just unfair, Clarissa issued the silent complaint. How was she not supposed to drool over this guy when he was a walking enticement?

Clarissa… The warning tone resumed inside her head. Still, she indulged in a few additional moments of appraising the silent stranger's unquestionably captivating face and broad frame.

"I'm looking for Stanford Crothers," she said eventually. "Is he anywhere around? His staff sent me down." Clarissa pointed toward the ceiling to indicate the main floor of the shop.

She waited a beat before tilting her head a fraction. The stranger was taking his time about answering. Clarissa found herself celebrating the fact that she wasn't the only one having trouble talking.

Elias's silence was due mainly to the fact that he was standing there cursing himself over his rotten luck. The woman with the provocative body had an even more provocative face framed by the chic cut of her dark hair. It was who that exceptional face reminded him of that had him scrutinizing the current state of his misfortune.

Thankfully, Stanford was returning to the cutting room floor. Elias shifted his gaze, barely tilting his head in silent reply to Clarissa's query.

Understandably curious about the stranger's demeanor, Clarissa forced her mind back to her purpose for being there. She looked in the direction the man had glanced and her smile held more than its fair share of relief when she saw Stan.

Stan, equally thrilled to see Clarissa, spread his arms wide. "Sunshine!" he greeted while enveloping her in a bear hug.

"Stan." Clarissa closed her eyes while cherishing the squeeze. "Sorry for just dropping in. I didn't mean to interrupt you with a customer." She glanced toward Elias, who had been observing the exchange between her and Stan.

"Nonsense," Stan balked, leaning back to smile down at Clarissa. "Never an interruption when it's you." His expression changed a bit as his eyes shifted between the two younger people. "Have you two met?" he asked.

Clarissa shook her head. Elias merely looked over at Stan before bringing his gaze again to Clarissa.

"Well, then." Stan took Clarissa's arm and led her over to remedy the situation. "This is Miss Clarissa David."

"David," Elias repeated, a slight surprise holding his rich voice.

Perceptive to a fault, Clarissa's expression took on a knowing element. "Were you expecting a different last name? Perhaps Beaumont?"

"Has anyone ever told you that you look like her? Like Jazmina Beaumont?" Eli questioned in a tone that was half awed and partly accusing.

"Well, Clarissa should be the image of the woman!" Stan's bellowing intruded. "She's her aunt."

Elias responded with a lengthy nod as though he were resigning himself to the fact.

"And you are?" Clarissa prompted.

"Sorry, Clarissa, this is Mr. Elias Joss."

It was Clarissa's turn to ease her curiosity. "Are you related to Joss Construction?"

"Started by his daddy back in the seventies." Stanford's information sharing showed no signs of quelling.

Clarissa's dusky brown eyes narrowed a tad as she appeared to be assessing the new detail, but she made no additional comment. Instead, she turned to Stan. "By any chance is my dress ready?"

"Lordy me." Stan laid a hand against the soft salt-and-pepper whiskers that dusted the lower half of his face. "Did I miss a deadline?"

"Oh, no, no, Stan, nothing like that." Clarissa's head shake warded off the man's concerns. "I was on this end for another meeting so I thought I'd stop by and check on it before heading out to Jaz's for a long weekend."

Stan rubbed his whiskers. "Well, there's some stitching that needs to be completed but I expect that'll be done in time for a Tuesday delivery before closing."

"Oh, that's perfect." Clarissa clasped her hands but winced. "Are you sure it won't put you behind with your other clients?" She chanced a look at Elias Joss who still regarded her with unreadable eyes.

Stan threw up a hand to wave dismissively. "You don't even worry your pretty li'l self over that, you hear?"

"Thanks, Stan." Clarissa was beaming once again. "I hate to rush off, but you know how Jaz can get."

"That's one lady who doesn't like to be kept waiting." Stanford chuckled, his kind hazel eyes crinkling at the corners. "I'll have the dress sent to the hotel. You're at the Peabody, right?" he asked, citing the name of the hotel where Clarissa stayed whenever she visited from California.

"You got it." Clarissa moved close to hug Stan again. He gave her a squeeze when she kissed his cheek.

Pulling back from Stan, Clarissa sighed and looked over at Eli. "Nice meeting you, Mr. Joss," she lied in a subdued tone.

"Sweet li'l thing," Stan complimented once Clarissa had gone. "It's a wonder some cat hasn't taken her off the market."

Elias smirked. "Has she ever been on the market?" His question was rhetorical. Like most people in Philadelphia, he knew of Jazmina Beaumont as well as her place of business. Until today, he'd never seen or met the woman's niece.

Stanford's laughter came as a huge burst of sound. "Well, if you ask Jaz Beaumont, the answer would be an emphatic 'Hell no!'"

"She's the protective type?"

"That's puttin' it a might subtle, kid." Stan glanced toward the staircase Clarissa had taken up and out of the shop. He shrugged, saying, "Guess it's understandable. In Jaz Beaumont's biz, she's seen all kinds. Makes sense she'd wanna protect her sister's kid from it."

Elias returned to the raised platform where Stan had been taking his measurements. "I wonder if looking so much like her aunt gets her in trouble."

Stan nodded while making note of a measurement on the pad he'd pulled from the burgundy smock he wore. "That answer would be an emphatic 'Hell yeah.' Ain't easy bearing the face of a woman who's been successful at sleepin' with most of the married or attached men in town."

Simply Great!!
By Kerry
I didn't like Ms Washington two previous books by KImani. They seemed too scattered and not too focus on the couples like I wanted. Because of those book I was hesitant to read this....but now I can gladly say Ms Washington has done it again. This book is great. Clarissa and Elias was burning up the pages. I can't wait to see what's in store for certain characters. Thank Altonya Washington

Provocative Attraction
By DaFortner
Provocative Territory is a story of two people making an acquaintance and from the initial first meeting realized there was an instant attraction. Elias Joss and Clarissa David had instant attraction when they met in an alteration's shop. Clarissa has come back to town at the request of her aunt and meets Elias. They later find that they will be working together on a construction project and also that there is a past indiscretion between their families. They both fight their feelings but strong attraction prevails and the two pursue a relationship. Of course, there is a mystery occurring in this storyline that may impact this couple's relationship.

This was a well written book in the Ms. Washington did an outstanding job with character development in that readers will find some surprises with the Elias and Clarissa. The attraction between these two jumped off the pages within the first chapter as well as the reader was able to identify the attractions between several of the secondary characters in the story line. The setting was very appropriate especially as it pertained to the mystery surrounding the business venture. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
