A great read!
By science junkie
This book is a must read for anyone who wants a clear description of the complex subject of cloning. Levine's account of the historical advances that eventually led to the cloning of Dolly in 1996 is highly informative and entertaining. While the common myths about cloning perpetuated in Hollywood movies are dispelled, Levine presents a balanced view of the ethical issues surrounding cloning and how various governments have responded to the potential benefits and risks associated with this research. I highly recommend this book!

A Clear, Concise Introduction to Cloning That Should Be Read By Everyone Interested In This Issue
By John Kwok
"Cloning: A Beginner's Guide" is more than just a mere introduction to the contentious issue of cloning. It is the best, most concise, and clearly written, summary that I have encountered (Indeed I am so impressed with Aaron Levine's skill in handling this subject, that I've recommended to a friend who teaches introductory biology at his college to consider using excerpts from Levine's book in his class.). Levine is also a fine writer who does an admirable job in discussing the issue of cloning from virtually every perspective, without clearly demonstrating any bias - pro or con - for some of its more contentious aspects. Much to my amazement, Levine has covered succinctly in less than 171 pages of text, not only the history of cloning, but its moral, and technological, implications too. In eight terse chapters, Aaron Levine discusses the history of cloning, the importance of embryonic stem cell research as a valuable new means of human therapeutic healing, the ethics of cloning, and its future. Truly, in the best sense of the term "primer", it functions admirably as such, giving readers a superb resource on cloning that they may return to frequently.

The first half of "Cloning: A Beginner's Guide" is devoted to the origins, history, and current status of (vertebrate) animal cloning. In Chapter 1 "What cloning is and why it matters", Levine explains the importance of cloning as both a future reproductive and therapeutic tool, dispelling many of the myths and misconceptions associated with it (The most notable example is one popularized by recent Hollywood films like "Multiplicity", in which adult clones are shown performing daily tasks; a fictional depiction which Levine notes correctly is biologically incorrect for obvious reasons related to normal human growth and development.). The chapter which follows is a brief introduction and history of genetics, cell biology and developmental biology. The third chapter traces the history of successful cloning of vertebrates by embryologists, culminating with the announcement of Dolly's birth in 1996. What follows next (Chapter 4) is an excellent discussion of both actual and potential usage of 21st Century cloning in animals, covering controversial issues such as the usage of cloning in preserving (or reviving in the case of extinct) species perilously close to extinction and in cloning favorite pet animals.

The second half of "Cloning: A Beginner's Guide" is devoted to the technological aspects of human cloning and stem cell research; their potential therapeutic benefits, and, of course, their ethical implications. Chapter 5 is devoted exclusively to stem cell research and the potential therapeutic benefits of human cloning. It is followed by an elegant, admirable survey on the ethical debate over human cloning itself (Chapter 6), covering every aspect, including religiously-oriented opinions expressed by leaders of several of the leading Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths. The role of governments in affecting cloning - including stem cell - research is discussed in Chapter 7, comparing and contrasting American government rules and regulations with those in other countries, including the United Nations. Finally, in Chapter 8, Levine offers an eloquent exploration on cloning's future, ending on a somewhat hopefully optimistic note.

Anyone seeking a balanced, terse, yet still extensive, introduction to cloning will find Aaron Levine's book essential, required reading (The book concludes with an excellent, exhaustive glossary of terms and definitions immediately after Chapter 8; it itself is almost worth the price of the book.). Ths fine little book is one which does belong on the bookshelves of anyone - indeed everyone - interested in cloning. I know that mine will occupy an important space on my bookshelves for a long time to come.

Thorough and to the point!
By J. Domanski
This is a very nicely packed description of the topic. Very well written: includes all the basic information plus a thorough exploration of related issues all delivered in an easy to read, enjoyable, conversational tone. I'm impressed by the amount of information within and the accessibility of its presentation. Not only a great way to access information on the science behind cloning, but a guide to the potential cloning shopper. Read within to see whether you should plan on counting on cloning to provide a repeat pet, a customized kid, or a replacement liver.

Great information for everyone - beginner, policymaker, or scientist looking for insight into the latest on cloning science. A great choice!

Painting the Black, by Carl Deuker

In his senior year of high school, late bloomer Ryan Ward has just begun to feel the magic of baseball - the magic of catching a wicked slider, of throwing a runner out, of training hard and playing hard and pushing his limits. Giving up baseball would be like getting off the most exciting ride of his life. But when one of his teammates clearly pushes the limits too far, Ryan is faced with a heartbreaking dilemma: he must choose between his love for the game and his sense of integrity - two things that, in his mind, baseball should bring together.

From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up. During the summer before his senior year, Ryan Ward is thrilled when a kid his age moves in across the street. He's even more thrilled when he learns that Josh Daniels is a star athlete. The two play catch for hours and Ryan secretly dreams of catching for the varsity team in the spring. He watches in awe as Josh proceeds to become the school's starting quarterback and leads the football team to a terrific season, but he is unsettled by the aggressive side of his friend's personality. When baseball season finally arrives, Ryan makes the team as a third-string catcher. He eventually becomes a starter because he's the only one who can handle Josh's hard slider. Just before the championship game, Ryan stumbles upon and stops an assault on a girl in the school. He realizes that one of the masked assailants is Josh, but telling the authorities proves to be an agonizing decision. The book ends somewhat ironically, yet realistically, with Josh signing a multimillion dollar professional baseball contract and receiving a tap on the wrist for his crime. Ryan, meanwhile, enrolls in the local junior college. Rather than producing a stereotyped high school jock, Deuker portrays Josh as a complex and multidimensional character. Ryan is a player who succeeds with his head, rather than through sheer talent. And while he learns about the subtleties of baseball, he also learns about the subtleties of life. A well-crafted sports novel that delivers without becoming didactic or boring.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Gr. 8-12. After a disastrous fall from a tree, senior Ryan Ward wrote off baseball. But he is swept back into the game when cocky, charismatic Josh Daniels--a star quarterback with the perfect spiral pass as well as a pitcher with a mean slider--moves into the neighborhood. Josh is adept at placing his pitches on the line between fair and foul ("painting the black"), and in his sweep to sports fame, he lives his life much the same way. Ryan, whose spot on the team hinges on his ability to catch Josh's pitches, soon learns that more than a team slot is at stake. The well-written sports scenes--baseball and football--will draw reluctant readers, but it is Ryan's moral courage that will linger when the reading is done. Candace Smith

From Kirkus Reviews
For Ryan Ward, 17, the baseball diamond leads to much more than just a winning season in this exciting and moving novel from Deuker (Heart of a Champion, 1993, etc.). Until Josh Daniels and his family move in across the street during the summer, Ryan seems destined for mediocrity at Seattle's Crown Hill High. Eager for a friend, Ryan tags after the charismatic, athletically gifted Josh, a pitcher; while they play catch, Ryan realizes that he enjoys catching and thinks of trying out for the varsity team. But Ryan's plans are put on hold when autumn rolls around and Josh concentrates on the football team. Throughout the novel, his single-minded, nearly ruthless ambition is shown as the opposite of Ryan's nagging insecurities. The image of himself as Josh's toady drives Ryan to begin working out months before baseball season. Josh's careful maneuvering during practice shows Ryan at his best, and he makes the varsity cut; the team's unprecedented success is achieved largely through the symbiosis between the boys as pitcher and catcher. There the connection ends: Josh, master of high school politics, grows more arrogant while Ryan blossoms with newfound confidence. A championship season seems clinched until Josh, in a wolf mask, assaults a female classmate who has embarrassed him. Ryan interrupts the assault and recognizes Josh. Deuker, adept at capturing the thrills during the game, also proves talented at dramatizing Ryan's torment in the face of his friend's deeds; the depiction of a boy coming into his own is resonant and inspiring. The True Life of HighSchool Baseball Players
By the kid
PAINTING THE BLACK
BY: Carl Deuker

" A thrilling sports story "
By the title you think it's about painting. But it's not, it's about baseball. As soon as you read the first page you'll be hooked, and find out it's about a lot more.
Ryan Ward is the type of kid who works at home on the weekends, but isn't a geek or made fun of. He'd do enough to get through the day so he can go back to his safe little room in his safe little house. But when Josh Danils moves in at midnight Ryan's life will change in away he never expected. Ryan is your typical senior who isn't very athletic
Sits around really doesn't have any friends. When Ryan goes over to introduce himself to josh ,a guy who is 6-2 200 pounds good-looking guy, they end up playing baseball at the park. Josh asks Ryan to catch for him Ryan is hesitant because he hurt is ankle and it never healed right but to his surprise josh says he's the best catcher he's ever seen.

Josh soon teaches Ryan about life. One day josh packs up all his stuff and goes and
Tries out for football. Well that's when Ryan starts to realize it's about attaching the day instead of just getting through it. So Ryan works out to get into shape every day. Finally baseball comes Ryan knows josh will make it but Ryan's not sure if he will but josh says
He will. But to his surprise he's the only one who can catch josh's slider, Ryan makes the team . Ryan's life is about to turn upside down in away he never expected. Ryan soon finds out josh is popular and feeds off it. But Ryan is proud of him self he is athletic and has made friends
Ryan emends up having the best year of his life on the baseball team when his life
Starts to change.

The best book I have ever read
By Spencer
Over the past two weeks I have been completely engrossed with a book by Carl Deuker, Painting the Black I was particularly attracted by the fact that the story was centered around high school baseball. As an eighth grader who will be attending high school next year, the idea of reading a book placed in a high school was especially attractive. However, as I was soon to learn, this book deals with even greater, important themes.
Ryan Ward is a shy high-school teenager, enjoying the summer before his senior year. A fanatic of baseball, who also plays catcher, Ryan has finally developed enough skill and courage to join the high school baseball team next spring. The cause of such a change in this usually timid boy is his new friend and neighbor, Josh Daniels. Josh is the complete opposite of Ryan, except for their mutual love of baseball. This common interest spurs their immediate friendship, as they spend the whole summer training for next baseball season. As school starts, Ryan and Josh loose sight of each other. While still being on friendly terms, Josh is extremely extroverted, and becomes one of the most popular kids at school. Ryan, on the other hand is rather introverted and has trouble associating with Josh's group of friends. However, as baseball season commences, their friendship returns to its original stage. As the season progresses, Ryan gains confidence and popularity. Unfortunately, Ryan is plagued by the knowledge of Josh's inappropriate behavior towards a girl, one day after practice. With this information Ryan is split between turning in the star pitcher or having a chance at winning the championship and keeping his new-found popularity.
The multitude of themes addressed in this fiction book makes it appropriate for age groups 12 years and older. The issue of rape and maintaining one integrity is especially important and should be dealt with around this age. Furthermore, it never hurts to reinforce these ideas as one grows older and faces various tribulations. Also, the storyline itself was strait forward and easy to comprehend. There is no doubt that this book will engage any reader over the age of 12. I would rate this book five star because it kept me in the book and I never wanted to put it down.

A hero's fall from grace
By twilliam
F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote, "show me a hero and I'llwrite you a tragedy".
Josh is certainly a local hero, as heleads his high school to great things on the athletic fields, but his personality and character are on the edge, and sometimes over the edge.
I grew up with the idea that leaders, whether they be in the classroom or on the ballfield had to have a clean slate when it comes to your character, perhaps this book is making a societal statement that things have changed. We read about college and even high school athletes who have had run-ins with the law and they are freed to continue to play and to cause more ills.
What a shame...despite the horrible feeling I got as I read about Josh the book is a quick fast read, that will lure you in and keep you turning pages faster than a Randy Johnson fastball.
Enjoy...also try _Heart of a Champion_ by Deuker, and _ Bull Catcher_ by Alden Carter.

Essential and realistic
By The Pegster
If you are intending to travel to Pakistan, and have never been there and/or have no further connection to Pakistan, I would say this book is almost an essential reading, and this applies to the tourist, the business person and someone visiting family there. But not only for the traveller, but also if you are interested in different cultures this makes a very interesting read.

Understandably maybe, Pakistan has a very bad press and is not associated with a country to go on holiday to, which is a shame really as it has so much to offer. The book is keeping neutral whilst getting the right balance in introducing us to this amazing country, really waiting to be discovered. But, at the same time, it is important to know about cultural differences (not necessarily to do with religion) and also simple security measures.

Living in a European country, Pakistan couldn't be further different from my current surroundings. I have a Pakistani husband who left his home country many years ago and even he found many interesting facts he didn't know. I have been to Pakistan before I read the book and often thought 'Yes, exactly' but also still found facts where I'd wish I'd known it on my previous journeys.
Short enough, this is the ideal book to download on your E-reader and browse before you travel and re-read on the plane.

One of the issues with travel guides like this is that the situation in the country can change quickly, so one of my concerns was also to find the most current travel book on Pakistan, and this one from 2013 is the newest one I could find.
The book covers following: land and people; values and attitudes; customs and traditions; making friends; private and family life; time out; travel, health and safety; business briefing; communicating.

I am very much looking forward to my next trip to Pakistan.

"Bree, wake up!"

A hand roughly shook Bree Dalton awake. Startled, she sat up with a gasp, blinking in the darkness.

Her younger sister was sitting on the edge of the bed. Tears sparkled on Josie's pale cheeks in the moonlight.

"What's happened?" Bree dropped her bare feet to the tile floor, ready to run, ready to fight anyone who had made her baby sister cry. "What's wrong?"

Josie took a deep breath.

"I really messed up this time." She wiped her eyes. "But before you freak out, I want you to know it's going to be fine. I know how to fix it."

Rather than be comforted by this statement, Bree felt deepening fear. Her twenty-two-year-old sister, six years younger than Bree, had a knack for getting into trouble. And she was wearing the short, sexy dress of a Hale Ka'nani cocktail waitress instead of their gray housekeeping smock.

"Were you working at the bar?" Bree demanded.

"Still worried about some man hitting on me?" Josie barked a bitter laugh. "I wish that was the problem."

"What is it, then?"

Josie ran a hand over her eyes. "I'm tired, Bree," she whispered. "You gave up everything to take care of me. When I was twelve, I needed that, but now I am so tired of being your burden—"

"I've never thought of you that way," Bree said, stung.

Josie looked at her clasped hands. "I thought this was my chance to pay off those debts, so we could go back to the Mainland. I've been practicing in secret. I thought I knew how to play. How to win."

A chill went down Bree's spine.

"You gambled?" she said numbly.

"It fell into my lap." Josie exhaled, visibly shivering in the warm Hawaiian night. "I'd finished cleaning the wedding reception in the ballroom when I ran into Mr. Hudson. He offered to pay me overtime if I'd serve drinks at his private poker game at midnight. I knew you'd say no, but I thought, just this once…"

"I told you not to trust him!"

"I'm sorry," Josie cried. "When he invited me to join them at the table, I couldn't say no!"

Bree clawed back her long blond hair. "What happened?"

"I won," Josie said defiantly. Then she swallowed. "At least I did for a while. Then I started losing. First I lost the chips I'd won, then I lost our grocery money, and then."

Cold understanding went through Bree. She finished dully, "Then Mr. Hudson kindly offered to loan you whatever you needed."

Josie's mouth fell open. "How did you know?"

Because Bree knew bullies like Greg Hudson and how they tried to gain the upper hand. She'd met his type before, long ago, in the life she'd given up ten years ago—before she'd fallen in love, and her life had fallen apart. Before the man she loved had betrayed her, leaving her to the sheriff and the wolves—orphaned and penniless at eighteen, with a heartbroken twelve-year-old sister.

But oh, yes. Bree knew Greg Hudson's type. She closed her eyes, feeling sick as she thought of the hotel manager's hard eyes above his jovial smile, of his cheerful Hawaiian shirt that barely covered his fat belly. The resort manager had slept with many of his female employees, particularly amongst the lower-paid housekeeping staff. In the two months since the Dalton sisters had arrived in Hawaii, Bree had wondered more than once why he'd gone to such trouble to hire them from Seattle. He claimed the girls had been recommended by their employment agency, but that didn't ring true. Surely there were many people looking for jobs here in Honolulu.

Josie had laughed at her, teasing her for being "gloomy and doomy," but as Bree had scrubbed the bathrooms and floors of the lavish resort, she'd tried to solve the puzzle in her mind, and her bad feeling only grew. Especially when their boss made it clear over the past few weeks that he was interested in Josie. And made it equally clear the one he really wanted was Bree.

But of course Josie, with her innocent, trusting spirit, never noticed evil around her. She didn't fully understand why Bree had given up gambling, and insisted they work only low-wage jobs for the ten years since their father died, keeping them under the radar of unscrupulous, dangerous men. Josie didn't know how wicked the world could be.

Bree did.

"Gambling doesn't pay." She kept her voice calm. "You should know that by now."

"You're wrong. It does!" Josie said angrily. "We had plenty of money ten years ago." She turned and looked wistfully at the window, toward the moonlit Hawaiian night. "And I thought if I could just be more like you and Dad."

"You were using us as role models? Have you lost your mind?" Bree exploded. "I've spent the last decade trying to give you a different life!"

"Don't you think I know that?" Josie cried. "What you've sacrificed for me?"

Bree took a deep breath. "It wasn't just for you." Her throat ached as she rose to her feet. "How much money did you lose tonight?"

For a moment, her sister didn't answer. Outside, Bree heard the distant plaintive call of seabirds as Josie stared mutinously at the floor, arms folded. When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible. "A hundred."

Bree felt relief so fierce she almost cried. She'd been so afraid it would be worse. Reaching out, she gave her sister's shoulder a squeeze. "It'll be all right." She exhaled in relief. "Our budget will be tight, but we'll just eat a little more rice and beans this month." Wiping her eyes, she tried to smile. "Let this be a good lesson…"

But Josie hadn't moved from the end of the bed. She looked up, her face pale.

"A hundred thousand, Bree," she whispered. "I owe Mr. Hudson a hundred thousand dollars."

For a second, Bree couldn't understand the words. Lingering tears of relief burned her eyes like acid as she stared at her sister.

A hundred thousand dollars.

Turning away, Bree started to pace, compulsively twisting a long tendril of blond hair into a tight ringlet around her finger as she struggled to make sense of all her worst fears coming true. She tried to control her shaking hands. Tried desperately to think of a way out.

"But I told you, you don't have to worry!" Josie blurted out. "I have a plan."

Bree stopped abruptly. "What is it?"

"I'm going to sell the land."

Her eyes went wide as she stared at her sister.

"There's no choice now. Even you must see that," Josie argued, blinking fast as she clasped her hands tightly in her lap. "We'll sell it, pay off the debt, and then pay off those men who are after us. You'll finally be free—"

"That land is in trust." Bree's voice was hard. "You don't get possession until you're twenty-five or married. So put it out of your mind."

Josie shook her head desperately. "But I know how I could—"

"You can't," she said coldly. "And even if you could, I wouldn't let you. Dad put that land into an unbreakable trust for a reason."

"Because he thought I was helpless to take care of myself."

"Because from the day you were born, you've had a knack for trusting people and believing the best of them."

"You mean I'm stupid and naive."

Controlling herself, Bree clenched her hands at her sides.

"It's a good quality, Josie," she said quietly. "I wish I had more of it."

And it was true. Josie had always put concern for others over her own safety and well-being. As a chubby girl of five, she'd once wandered out of their Alaskan cabin into the snow, hoping to find their neighbor's cat, which had disappeared the day before. Eleven-year-old Bree had searched their rural street with their panicked father and half a dozen neighbors for hours, until they'd finally found her, lost in the forest, dazed and half-frozen.

Josie had nearly died that day, for the sake of a cat that was found later, snug and warm in a nearby barn.

Bree took a deep breath. Her little sister's heart was as big as the world. It was why she needed someone not nearly so kind or innocent to protect her. "Are they still playing?"

"Yes," Josie said in a small voice.

"Who's at the table?"

"Mr. Hudson and a few owners. Texas Big-Hat, Silicon Valley, Belgian Bob," she said, using the housekeeping staff's nicknames for the villa owners. Her eyes narrowed. "And one more man I didn't recognize. Handsome. Arrogant. He kicked me out of the game." She scowled. "The others would've let me stay longer—"

"You would have just lost more," Bree said coldly. Turning away, she went behind her closet door and yanked off her oversized sleep shirt, pulling on a bra and then a snug black T-shirt. "We'd owe a million dollars now, instead of just a hundred thousand."

"It might as well be a million, for all our chance of paying," Josie grumbled. "For all the good it will do them if I don't sell that land. They can't get blood out of a stone!"

Bree pulled on her skinny dark jeans over her slim legs. "And what do you think will happen when you don't pay?"

"Mr. Hudson will make me scrub his floors for free?" she replied weakly.

Coming around the closet door, Bree stared at her in disbelief. "Scrub his floors?"

"What else can he do?"

Bree turned away, muttering to herself. Josie didn't understand the situation she was dealing with. How could she? Bree had made it her mission in life to protect her from knowing.

She'd hoped they would find peace in Hawaii, three thousand miles away from the ice and snow of Alaska. She'd prayed she would find her own peace, and finally stop dreaming of the blue-eyed, dark-haired man she'd once loved. But it hadn't worked. Every night, she still felt Vladimir's arms around her, still heard his low, sensual voice. I love you, Breanna. She still saw the brightness of his eyes as he held up a sparkling diamond beneath the Christmas tree. Will you marry me?

Ugh. Furiously, Bree pushed the memory away. No wonder she still hated Christmas. Let other women go home to their turkeys and children and brightly lit trees. To Bree, yesterday had been just another workday. She never let herself remember that one magical Christmas night when she was eighteen, when she'd wanted to change her life to be worthy of Vladimir's love. The night she'd promised herself that she would never—for any reason—gamble or cheat or lie again. Even though he'd left her, she'd kept that promise.

Until now. She reached into the back of her closet, pulling out her black boots with the sharp stiletto heels.

"Bree?" Josie said anxiously.

Not answering, Bree sat down heavily on the bed. Putting her feet into her boots, she zipped up the backs. It was the first time she'd worn these stiletto boots since she was a rebellious teenager with a flexible conscience and a greedy heart. It took Bree back to the woman she'd never thought she would be again. The woman she'd have to be tonight to save her sister. She glanced at the illuminated red letters of the clock. Three in the morning. A perfect time to start.

"Please, you don't have to do this," her sister whimpered. Her voice choked as she whispered helplessly, "I have a plan."

Ignoring the guilt and anguish in her sister's voice, Bree rose to her feet. "Stay here." Squaring her shoulders, she severed the connection between her brain and her pounding heart. Emotion would only be a liability from here on out. "I'll take care of it."

"No! It's my fault, Bree, and I can fix it. Listen. On Christmas Eve, I met a man who told me how."

But Bree didn't wait to hear whatever cockamamy sob story someone might have fed her softhearted sister this time. She grabbed her black leather motorcycle jacket and headed for the door.

"Bree, wait!"

She didn't look back. She walked out of the tiny apartment and went down the open-air hallway to the moss-covered, crumbling concrete steps of the aging building where all the Hale Ka'nani Resort's staff lived.

It's just like riding a bike, Bree told herself fiercely as she raced down the steps. Even after ten years away from the game, she could win at poker. She could.

Warm trade winds blew against her cold skin. Pulling on her black leather jacket, she went down the illuminated paths of the five-star resort toward the beautiful, brand-new buildings used by wealthy tourists and the even wealthier villa owners, clustered around the edge of a private, white-sand beach.

My heart is cold, she repeated to herself. I feel nothing.

The moon was full over the Pacific, leaving a ghostly trail across the black water. Palm trees swayed in the warmth of the Hawaiian breeze. She heard the distant call of night birds, smelled the exotic scent of fruit and spice mingling with the salt of the sea.

Above her, dark silhouettes of tall, slender palm trees swayed in a violet sky twinkling with stars. Even with the bright full moon, the night seemed black to her, wide and endless as the sea. She followed the illuminated path around the deserted pool between the beach and the main lobby. As she grew closer to the beach, she heard the sound of the surf build to a roar.

The open-air bar was nearly empty beneath its long thatched roof. Hanging lights swayed in the breeze over a few drunk tourists and cuddling honeymooners. Bree nodded at the tired-eyed bartender, then went past the bar into a connecting hall that led to the private rooms reserved for the villa owners and their guests. Where rich men brought their cheap mistresses and played private, illegal games.

Opening the door, Bree stumbled in her stiletto boots.

Clenching her hands at her sides, she took a deep breath and told her heart to be a lump of ice. Cold. Cold. Cold. She had no feelings of any kind. Poker was easy. By the time she was fourteen, she'd been fleecing tourists in Alaskan ports. And she'd learned the best way not to show emotion was not to feel it in the first place.

Never play with your heart, kiddo. Only a sucker plays with his heart. Even if you win, you lose.

Her father had said those words to her a million times growing up, but she'd still had to learn the hard way. Once, she'd played with all her heart. And lost—everything.

Don't think about it. But in spite of her best efforts, the memory brought a chill of fear. She'd been so determined to leave that life behind. What if she'd forgotten how to play? What if she'd lost her gift? What if she couldn't lure the men in, convince them to let her ante up without money, and get the cards she needed—or bluff them into believing she had?

If she failed at this, then… Bree felt a flash of sweat on her forehead. Running for the Mainland might be their only option. Or, since they had no money or credit cards and it was doubtful they'd even make it to the airport before they were caught, swimming for the Mainland.

She exhaled, forcing her body to calm down and her heart to slow. It's just poker, she told herself firmly. Your heart is cold. You feel nothing.

Dealing Her Final Card is a Joyfully Recommended Read
By mnix
Reformed confidence artist, Breanna "Bree" Dalton, is on a mission to protect her younger sister, Josie. She had no idea that when she ventured to that table she would be faced with her past--a past that destroyed her life at the time. Bree had never truly gotten over that night with Vladimir, but she persevered trying to be better than she once was.

Russian Prince Vladimir Xendzov, did not come out of their past relationship unscathed. He has changed since Bree's last encounter with him, and not for the better. He is now a cold, ruthless man, whose heart has long since died! And Prince Vladimir still desires Bree. Vladimir wagers for the opportunity to own her body with a flick of a card for as long as he desires her. Feeling confident of a win, Bree can't resist the temptation that Vladimir promises if she wins and so she accepts that gamble. However, have they both gambled more than they are willing to lose?

Dealing Her Final Card was a sizzling HOT tale with a surprisingly steamy encounter between Vladimir and Bree. I was a little hesitant to go along for the ride as Bree seemed a bit more than what I had expected. However, I was pleased with the outcome because Bree held true to her character in Dealing Her Final Card.

Dealing Her Final Card had a very alpha male in Vladimir, but he really was more than that at the center. I enjoyed watching his transformation, and I believed in their HEA. I understood the difficulties that both Vladimir and Bree endured in Dealing Her Final Card as they worked out their issues with one another. I was glad that Vladimir and Bree took that final gamble as it proved the most rewarding for both. The unconditional love that was spoken in Dealing Her Final Card was truly heartwarming for me, as well.

I never really felt that Vladimir was overly cruel to Bree in Dealing Her Final Card, as she agreed to the deal before it began. Bree needed to hold to her word and be honorable when all was said and done. Yet, she finds that it is a little harder to be so honorable than what she had though before in Dealing Her Final Card. However, given all that Vladimir and Bree endured to get to the HEA, the truly priceless moment was when he gave up that which he most wanted for something else. That makes this a Joyfully Recommended read an alpha hero who is more than the sum of his parts!!

Dealing Her Final Card
By Jess
I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of reading a contemporary romance that featured a heroine who used to be a con-artist in the past, at least not one that didn't have some sort of urban fantasy feel or something, and so this book grabbed me from the very beginning and refused to let go.

The fact that Vlad and Bree were estranged lovers of sorts, with an enormous misunderstanding in their past (or was it?), added quite a bit of delicious tension. Even though I think some readers may find Vlad to be overly brutish and possibly even cruel to Bree, I felt it was, for the most part, pretty well deserved.

With a fresh storyline to appeal to modern readers, but enough of the scandal, betrayal, and money that keeps us coming back to the Harlequin Presents line year after year, I loved it.

Recommended for self-sacrificing heroines with sketchy pasts, bitter heroes who revel in revenge, and of hot chemistry that neither can deny.

A very solid 4.5/5 Stars

Dealing Her Final Card
By BrittaWrites
This book was read as an Advance Reading Copy (ARC) provided for free by the publisher.

Rating: M (for Mature Audiences - nothing that you would find in your run of the mill romance novel)
Setting: Hawaii, Alaska, Russia
Characters: Bree Dalton, Josie Dalton, Vladimir Xendzov, Kasimir Xendzov,

Synopsis: Bree Dalton is thrown back into the life that she tried to escape. One mistake by her younger sister, Josie, and Bree finds herself gambling with a group of men to get her sister's $100,000 back (a $100k that the sisters don't have to begin with!). What the men gambling don't know is that Bree's father was a con man of the highest caliber and he taught his eldest daughter everything he knew about pulling a con, playing cards and calling bluffs. The problem? One of the men at the table knows Bree from way, way back. Prince Vladimir Xendzov was Bree's first love and first lover. When she loses to him in a final winner takes everything game, she wonders what is going to happen to her now that Vladimir all but owned her. And what will happen to her heart now that she is his again?

Review: This was the first time I've read anything by Jennie Lucas and I think (no I know) that I wouldn't hesitate to grab another book by her. She's a fantastic author who weaved great detail into this novel. I could really feel the depth of Bree's love for Vladimir and her devotion to her sister (and even to the memory of her father). The ending was perfectly paced and well written. Lucas does an excellent job of setting the stage for Josie's book (which I can't wait to read!).

In my opinion, this book gets:
4 out of 5 stars (nearly perfect)

What do anarchists stand for? In this clear and penetrating study, Ruth Kinna goes directly to the heart of this controversial ideology, explaining the influences that have shaped anarchism and the different tactics and strategies that have been used by anarchists throughout history to achieve their ends. Kinna covers themes both historical and acutely contemporary, including: Could anarchy ever really be a viable alternative to the state? Can anarchist ideals ever be consistent with the justification of violence? How has anarchism influenced the anti-globalization movement? Takes up the theories, and questions which work best
By John L Murphy
Rather than provide a chronological narrative introducing great anarchist thinkers and then current concerns (as Colin Ward's "Anarchism: A Very Short Introduction" or the not short at all "Demanding the Impossible" history of the idea and the movement by Peter Marshall; both reviewed by me), this British lecturer and editor of Anarchist Studies addresses a readership which may already have some familiarity with these thinkers, and involvement in contemporary social and progressive issues. Ruth Kinna's beginner's guide appears geared for a political studies seminar, but a reading group or curious inquirer might benefit as well from its range. Each chapter is not only footnoted thoroughly but enriched by a bibliography and a list of websites. The informative contents are neither too jargon-filled nor too slogan-stuffed. (It must be noted that "IWW" stands for not "International" but "Industrial" Workers of the World, a regrettable if understandable lapse. But we learn who designed the Ⓐ symbolizing Proudhon's "anarchy is the mother of order": Anselme Bellegarrigue ca. 1850.) Kinna keeps enough distance from the rivalries, competing theories, and hard-headed activists from many factions. Still, she asks questions, and prods readers to do likewise.

Chapter one takes on the contested definition of anarchy and the negative connotations dogging it. She addresses its past uses, its key exponents, the various forms the concept takes, and a quick history. Then, its critique of the State (not the same as society, and perhaps as government, a tricky distinction for some to parse and debate, as are power and authority as accepted or not) follows. "Natural" authority and "social" power precede her consideration of liberty. As she cites one thinker, liberty is granted, while one is born free. I found chapter three valuable for its investigation into competing arguments whether a natural, pre-industrial community of anarchists existed or survives today, and whether some older notions that anarchism imitates or returns to such a condition are upheld by anthropological evidence today. (Oddly, no mention of David Graeber appears here.)

Utopian experiments, including an aside to a New Zealand novel (one aspect of Kinna's study is that it looks a bit at Maori and Australian responses to anarchism, which get ignored in many European or British-centered studies) that smacks of the hippie era, find mention, as do the heavily analyzed (by others) experiments attempted in Spain and Ukraine during the past century. Primitivism gains throughout these sections extended attention, and Kinna shows in helpful charts how its precepts align or differ from the classic 19 and early-20c thinkers as well as some competitors from communitarians and anarcho-capitalists. The graphic summation of the range of responses by anarchists-with-adjectives helps greatly to illustrate their various positions.

The last part looks at tactics, who takes charge, whether a platform, a union, a collective, or individuals take charge. The difficult questions of success given the scope of resistance vs. the crackdowns imposed, and the adjustments of earlier decades' models of factory workers or ruralists in terms of those in cubicles, in odd jobs or none, squatters, and the like get some mention. I'd have liked more on how workers in the electronic era and the age of dispersed work and downsizing and global competition might fare in relation to the sentiment that a general strike can bring down the system once and for all. Also, while Kinna shows how state socialism and Marxist models diverge from anarchism, and the dangers of compromise, she might have taken more time to address those who advocate or at least accept some cooperation with the political system to advance some change, in light of those who reject any such collaboration as unacceptable. In light of present protests and the indifference many have shown towards anti-globalization campaigns and actions, how to get anarchism taken seriously appears still a topic needing more reflection and more guidance. However, her closing portions, as to tactics, seem to hint pacifism may not suffice.

Health Impact Assessment: Principles and Practice, by Martin Birley

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is primarily concerned with the future consequences of plans, proposals and policies on the health of communities. It is a rapidly growing complement to Environmental Impact Assessment, increasingly mandated by national and international requirements. Guidelines have been produced by many national and international organizations and it is being introduced in a number of undergraduate or postgraduate university curricula. However, there has been until now no broad-based, introductory text of international scope to the subject, suitable for both these courses and for professional training.

The purpose of this book is to fill this gap and to introduce the subject of Health Impact Assessment using plain language, in both general and specific contexts and with reference to both market and less developed economies. As a result, the reader should be able to describe what HIA can and cannot achieve, identify the components of a successful HIA and participate in an assessment as a member of a team. Examples are provided from a number of planning and development sectors, including extractive industry, water resource management, and housing. The reader, whether student or professional, need not be a health specialist, although prior knowledge of some public or environmental health would be an advantage.

Review

Health Impact Assessment came Highly Commended in the Public Health category for the 2012 BMA Medical Book and Patient Information Awards.

'A comprehensive description and discussion of an important area of public health where there are few/no alternative texts. The quality of the arguments is very high. This is a key text in an undersupplied and important area for public health practice' – British Medical Association

'To many people, Health Impact Assessment is a new concept requiring new skills. A pioneer and global expert in the subject, Dr Birley has been grappling successfully with this challenge for many decades. His book reveals extraordinary experience and insight, providing depth and context to existing HIA guidelines, invaluable to those who are trying to use them.' Professor Sir Michael Marmot, professor of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College London, Chair Commission on Social Determinants of Health and the Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England post 2010 (Marmot Review) and current president of the BMA

'I warmly commend this book. Apart from being by far the most useful work on how to operationalize Health Impact Assessment, the book is brilliantly comprehensive and a profoundly wise distillation of the author's unparalleled experience worldwide.' Robert Goodland, former Senior Environmental Advisor to the World Bank Group in Washington, DC, and former president of the International Association for Impact Assessment

'This is a very comprehensive overview of Health Impact Assessment from a UK and international perspective and will be most useful for both beginners and experienced practitioners. The structure makes it easy to use as a reference book and the wealth of examples bring it to life. It is an excellent contribution to ensuring that HIA continues to develop as an internationally recognised and valued methodology for assessing new developments for their impact on people's lives and the environment we live in.' Colleen Williams, former HIA Policy lead at Department of Health, London

'This is an excellent handbook on international HIA by one of the pioneers of HIA theory and practice. It has something for new and experienced HIA practitioners alike. The case study examples, his tips on how to avoid common pitfalls and his insights into how to enhance the value of a HIA are outstanding. This is a must-have book that should be on the desk of anyone who undertakes, commissions or teaches HIA in both developed and, especially, developing countries.' Salim Vohra, Director, Centre for Health Impact Assessment, Institute of Occupational Medicine, London

'With many practical examples from throughout the world, teamed with thoughtful discussion and considered theory, this book provides a bridge for all people interested in the art and science of impact assessment to further develop their understanding and knowledge.' Robert Quigley, Director, Quigley and Watts Ltd; Co-Director, HIA Research Unit, University of Otago, New Zealand

'Martin Birley was a pioneer of health impact assessment, working first in low income countries and more recently also in the UK. This book is the crystallisation of these years of experience. It is ambitious in scope, being designed primarily as a practical guide for those wanting to do HIA and including detailed explanations of key concepts, approaches and methods, with case studies and exercises. There are chapters on the issues to consider in HIAs of three key sectors - water resource management, extractive industries and housing and spatial planning which will give practitioners insight into specific sectoral issues. My own favourite section is on the history of HIA, which challenged my understanding of how different approaches to HIA developed and the assumptions underpinning these. This book will be invaluable to those already working on HIAs as well as those wanting an introduction to the basic steps.' Margaret Douglas, Consultant in Public Heath, Edinburgh, Scotland

'This book is both a comprehensive text book for those new to HIA and a useful reference text―and very enjoyable read―for HIA practitioners. It sets out the rationale for HIA, stages of an HIA, the methods and evidence used and development of recommendations. The book is well presented and easy to follow: each chapter has a summary of the contents, practical exercises for students and a full bibliography. It also contains many illustrative examples and case studies.' Margaret J. Douglas, Journal of Public Health

'The scope of the book is vast and yet it feels like a conversation... Policies, plans, programmes and projects affect health. They can have wonderful and beneficial effects. They can have awful and unintended adverse effects. This central message is not new to the world of impact assessment, but Birley's focus on health is welcome and its treatment in a book of this kind is long overdue.' – Ben Cave, in Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal (2012).

The Secret Financial Life of Food: From Commodities Markets to Supermarkets (Arts and Traditions of the Table: Perspectives on Culinary His

One morning while reading Barron’s, Kara Newman took note of a casual bit of advice offered by famed commodities trader Jim Rogers. “Buy breakfast,” he told investors, referring to the increasing value of pork belly and frozen orange juice futures. The statement inspired Newman to take a closer look at agricultural commodities, from the iconic pork belly to the obscure peppercorn and nutmeg. The results of her investigation, recorded in this fascinating history, show how contracts listed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange can read like a menu and how market behavior can dictate global economic and culinary practice. The Secret Financial Life of Food reveals the economic pathways that connect food to consumer, unlocking the mysteries behind culinary trends, grocery pricing, and restaurant dining. Newman travels back to the markets of ancient Rome and medieval Europe, where vendors first distinguished between “spot sales” and “sales for delivery.” She retraces the storied spice routes of Asia and recounts the spice craze that prompted Christopher Columbus’s journey to North America, linking these developments to modern-day India’s bustling peppercorn market. Newman centers her history on the transformation of corn into a ubiquitous commodity and uses oats, wheat, and rye to recast America’s westward expansion and the Industrial Revolution. She discusses the effects of such mega-corporations as Starbucks and McDonalds on futures markets and considers burgeoning markets, particularly “super soybeans,” which could scramble the landscape of food finance. The ingredients of American power and culture, and the making of the modern world, can be found in the history of food commodities exchange, and Newman connects this unconventional story to the how and why of what we eat.

From Booklist
Newman explains the history of where, how, and why our food is traded and the link between the farm and the dinner table. Rather than a how-to on trading commodity futures, this book explores culinary history and the role of the commodities market in shaping that history. Newman quotes authority Chad Hart, who estimates that raw commodities account for 15 to 20 cents of every dollar spent on food, with the rest going for advertising, transportation, labor, and so forth, whereas in the 1940s and ’50s commodities had a greater influence on food prices. U.S. trading of agricultural commodities in the future will have a global perspective likely to reflect global food needs and availabilities—not just those of American eaters. Americans will continue to rely on the agricultural futures market for price discovery (figuring how much to charge for an item and the price that the market will bear and keeping food prices generally steady). Interesting, thought-provoking book for food aficionados. --Mary Whaley

Review

The Secret Financial Life of Food is of benefit to anyone who is involved in the food industry, including growers, processors, consumers, and even professionals in the culinary arts. It also has appeal for those of us who buy and sell commodity futures, helping us gain a better understanding of how the markets have evolved.

(Alan Bush, senior financial futures analyst, Archer Financial Services, Inc.)

Interesting, thought-provoking book for food aficionados.

(Booklist)

Those who are interested in the history of the "food" commodity markets will find many treats in Newman's book.

(Brenda Jubin Seeking Alpha)

a refreshing and much-needed look from a different perspective: food as commodity.

(James Norton Washington Post)

Review

I know of no other book that looks at the topic of agricultural commodities as broadly or that links the personalities and processes that have acted on different commodities.

(Gary Allen, author of Herbs: A Global History)

This is a subject that commands attention because our lives depend on it. Thank you, Kara Newman, for relating food to finance in such an entertaining way and for illuminating the hidden underbelly of the food world in ways that are invaluable to all who eat.

(Betty Fussell, author of Raising Steaks: The Life and Times of American Beef and The Story of Corn)

Ever wonder why food bills go up and down? A major reason is commodity trading, a usually hidden process that sets basic prices on America's most important products, such as cattle, coffee, cocoa, sugar, eggs, wheat, butter, pork bellies, orange juice, and soy beans. What makes the process complicated is futures trading, derivatives, trading long and trading short. Sound boring? Not so. Culinary historian Kara Newman has conjured a delightful, behind the scenes look at commodity trading in The Secret Financial Life of Food. It is jam-packed with surprising facts and fun-to-read stories. It is also a good primer on commodity trading, brimming with insight. A must read for anyone interested in food, history, or economics.

(Andrew F. Smith, editor in chief, Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink in America)

Curious to how things work?
By Autamme_dot_com
This book puts a new meaning to the phrase "Buy Breakfast!"

Looking at the series of global trade that lies at the heart of much of what we eat, the author considers the various commodities that are sold such as coffee beans and pork bellies and looks at the impact that this can have throughout the chain from producer right through to the end consumer. Commodity trading over time has helped shape our culinary habits and traditions - wars and regime changes have happened even, as residents of Boston who threw lots of British tea into the harbour can show, all due to a precious foodstuff being traded.

Commodity trading is not just limited to the current "daily" price either, as many traders deal in "futures" (future event pricing) and the author has traced such futures trading in grain back to Biblical times. The book's primary focus is on commodities trading from a United States-perspective, looking back at the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT)'s foundation in 1848 and the various splits and consolidations that have occurred since that time.

A smattering of history is, of course, contextually necessary and a welcome addition but since the author has given such a great write up on a subject that is not such a "general interest" topic, hopefully there is scope for a second volume, considering perhaps the development of the world through technology and commodity trading?

Each key commodity gets its own chapter and it is interesting to compare and contrast the various developments in commodity trading and their impacts to producer, wholesaler and end-user too, both in isolation and in a general overview. Of course, in the latter decades the world has got a lot smaller thanks to air travel and containerised shipping. Richer nations have the ability to buy in various commodities that perhaps they grow themselves when it is cheaper to do so, perhaps due to labour costs or to adverse weather. Less-developed nations earn a significant portion of their income through the growth of many commodities and even changing prices can have an impact both locally to the producer and locally to the end user.

Exactly like the stock market, prices go up and down with often no perceptual reason why to the casual observer. A strike, poor harvests, disease and changing consumer demand all can leave their mark. This book manages to give you a great insight into this fascinating area without compromising itself through over-simplification. Written as a scholarly work but with the general reader also in mind, the engaging, friendly, accessible style means that this book is deserving of a much wider audience than perhaps it might get stuck in a bookstore. You could even just imagine this book as a documentary series. It just has that feel. Of course, as you would expect, at the end of this book are detailed bibliographic notes for those who require this sort of thing.

Columbia University Press has managed through its "Arts & Traditions of the Table: Perspectives on Culinary History" collection to have had some great books that can open the reader's eyes to new thoughts, new thinking and a lot of great history. This book is a further "must buy" for those involved within the food industry who is at least a little bit curious as to how a bit of the global jigsaw works.

Critical reading for the future of food
By Christiana
This book is amazing. I keep coming back to it over the past few years and am surprised it has so few reviews. Telling the financial story behind whats on our plate is done better by Newman than any other source I have read, historic, financial or otherwise.
I wish more people understood how the 'financialization' of food came to be and how it influences our food systems. It really is critical in understanding how we got to where we are now and shaping where we go from here.

Highly interesting but with flaws
By Olsson
Very interesting review of the history of food commodity markets. The does however suffer from poor editing, with unnecessary repetitions occurring now and then. Also, more info on the present situation would be desirable but as the author says, it tends to be difficult to get active market actors to open up about this.
