Growing Up Asian in AustraliaFrom Black Inc.

Asian-Australians have often been written about by outsiders, as outsiders. In this collection, compiled by award-winning author Alice Pung, they tell their own stories with verve, courage and a large dose of humour. These are not predictable tales of food, festivals and traditional dress. The food is here in all its steaming glory - but listen more closely to the dinner-table chatter and you might be surprised by what you hear.

Here are tales of leaving home, falling in love, coming out and finding one's feet. A young Cindy Pan vows to win every single category of Nobel Prize. Tony Ayres blows a kiss to a skinhead and lives to tell the tale. Benjamin Law has a close encounter with some angry Australian fauna, and Kylie Kwong makes a moving pilgrimage to her great-grandfather's Chinese village.

Here are well-known authors and exciting new voices, spanning several generations and drawn from all over Australia. In sharing their stories, they show us what it is really like to grow up Asian, and Australian.

Contributors include: Shaun Tan, Jason Yat-Sen Li, John So, Annette Shun Wah, Quan Yeomans, Jenny Kee, Anh Do, Khoa Do, Caroline Tran and many more.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Practical and very helpful
By Amazon Customer
Reading this book was like a breath of fresh air. It's very well-written, easy to read, and uses a down to earth style, with a lot of great humor sprinkled in. It is very different from most books on quality and process improvement I've read. It recommends a pragmatic approach to problem-solving that simplifies the principles from Lean and Six Sigma and uses just a few basic tools to focus on 90% of the process problems a business wrestles with. I found the streamlined process improvement approach which is outlined in the book to be very helpful.

its NOT about lean, its about leaned six sigma.
By David J. Vize
I found this a great book on practical rapid and minimal tools for deployment of six sigma. Its great from that perspective and has many great tips including my favourites, the 70/70/70 and 4/50 rules of thumb.

Its NOT about using lean tools and methodologies supported by six sigma tools and methodologies, which is what I was expecting. Having said that, it was a great and easy read and has inspired me to push for more rapid (but effective) turnover of projects.

Given our target is 90 day turnover, I would like to see how I go with the leaned down six sigma process.

Good information but poorly put together
By hesselgesser
The author does a good job of laying out the basic concepts of lean and six sigma, particularly in chapter 1. In subsequent chapters, however, the author appears to be pulling various pieces of information from blogs and other works, which leads to a disorganized and confusing set of principles, lists, pillars and points. I can tolerate wading through these confusions, but find overt errors in the book (kindle version) such as the assessment chapter 1 and typos in chapter 2 inexcusable for a book that addresses defect minimization.

Operation Broken Reed: Truman's Secret North Korean Spy Mission That Averted World War III, by Arthur L. Boyd

At the height of the Korean War, President Truman launched one of the most important intelligence - gathering operations in history. So valuable were the mission's findings about the North Korean-Soviet-Chinese alliance that it is no stretch to say they prevented World War III. Only one man — sworn to secrecy for a half-century—survived Operation Broken Reed. Arthur Boyd recalls his role as cryptographer on a team of Army Rangers, Navy Frogmen, Air Force officers, and CIA operatives that posed as the captured crew of a B-29 bomber in January 1952. Given cover names and cyanide capsules in case of discovery, the men were transported by Chinese Nationalists wearing Communist uniforms across North Korea, where undercover allies delivered information about troop strengths, weaponry, and intention. Fraught with danger, the mission came apart on its last day when the Americans came under fire from Chinese forces wise to the operation. The members of Broken Reed supplied Truman with proof of massive Chinese and Soviet buildups and a heavy Soviet bomber group in Manchuria, fully loaded with atomic weapons. With the potential destruction of the world outlined in front of him, Truman chose not to escalate the Korean War, saving millions of lives.

From Publishers Weekly
Career army officer Boyd breaks his half-century of silence to tell the remarkable story of a top-secret black operation behind enemy lines during the Korean War. Code-named Broken Reed, the operation sent a 10-man team into North Korea to collect badly needed intelligence on enemy capabilities and intentions to aid President Harry Truman in making a fateful decision: to escalate the conflict or accept a stalemate. Boyd, a young signal corps lieutenant, was selected for the mission because of his top-secret clearance and his knowledge of Morse code. Boyd would transmit whatever intelligence the team gathered to a communications aircraft over the Sea of Japan. Inserted into North Korea by submarine, the team collected and transmitted intelligence that revealed a staggering enemy buildup and convinced Truman not to escalate the conflict. Discovered and ambushed, seven of the team were killed and three wounded—two grievously. In a desperate flight, the wounded reached their rendezvous point and were rescued by a waiting ship. If true—and there are no records, transcripts, or evidence of the operation and Boyd is the only known survivor—this suspenseful saga of heroism and sacrifice is further proof that truth can be stranger than fiction. Review
"A chilling story and, if true, certainly an amazing one in the annals of wartime espionage." -- Library Journal, 10/15/07

"A fascinating account." -- Military Officer, October 2007

About the Author
In August 1951, Lieutenant Colonel Arthur L. Boyd, U.S. Army (Ret), was a twenty-three-year old first lieutenant serving in Germany when he applied for a Top Secret “black intelligence” mission during the Korean War.

The mission director, operating out of the Pentagon and answering directly to President Harry S. Truman, picked Boyd to serve on a ten-man military intelligence team. Lieutenant Boyd was responsible for encryption and transmission of twenty intelligence reports collected from operatives within North Korea. Reports were relayed to Truman under an “Only-for-the-President’s-Eyes” order.

Following Operation Broken Reed, a successful operation that claimed the lives of seventy-five brave patriots, Boyd returned to Germany and was promoted to captain. As a captain, Boyd commanded units at Fort Bliss, Texas; within the 7th Infantry Division in Korea; at Fort Benning, Georgia; and at Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Promoted to major, Boyd served as Chief of Communication Division for Fort Richardson. After his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel, Boyd served as Chief, Communication Service at Fort Knox, Kentucky, until his retirement in 1967.

Colonel Boyd moved to Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he graduated from Bethel Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree. After graduation, he served as a chaplain at the Metropolitan and North Memorial Hospitals in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After completing his tenure as a chaplain, he served as a financial consultant with a Saint Paul firm. Colonel Boyd now lives with his wife of sixty-one years in Tennessee.

Get the story straight - Carefully read the entire text to include the Prologue, the Epilogue and the Afterword.
By Arthur L. Boyd
Please read my in-depth comment following the negative critical reader review posted by R. Axelrod. It is imperative that the reader fully understands and comprehends the fact that the Operation Broken Reed story was written based upon a factual event, not some mind-generated military intelligence mission. The nine Americans and sixty-six Nationalist Chinese military who died for their country demand to be honored by a grateful nation for their heroic deed. Had they failed, a third world war and a doubtless nuclear holocaust would have ensued, claiming the lives of millions. This story is not, as Axelrod stated,"a fraud." Abundant historical, circumstantial and presumptive evidence abounds, fully supporting the authenticity of the mission. Axelrod's review is a cruel and a disgraceful insult to the memory of my dead comrades. Axelrod, following outlandish and unsupported remarks, drove a nail into the heart of the story with a closing comment, "You can delight in a creative adventure story." One fact remains. Anyone may lay claim to being a "specialist" within any given field, however unsupported words from a self-made fake specialist will lay waste to any boni-fide claim, thereby revealing the non-existence of any true level of training, experience and expertise.

Four-five years back I read a terrific book, "The Secrets of Inchon: The Untold Story of the Most Daring Covert Mission of the Korean War," by Eugene Franklin Clark. I blogged about it Sept. 15 of last year. It is the first-person account of a secret, commando-like mission at Inchon that helped turn the tide of the war in favor of the U.N. side. Clark at the time was a Navy lieutenant who at 39 was "getting a little old for the commando game." The book is the record of his two-week adventure--a hair-raising reconnaissance strikes, night raids, firefights, a blazing naval battle between Chinese sailing junks--among the islands and mudlfats of the communist-held Seoul-Inchon harbor area. Clark wrote it in the 1950s, intending it not for publication but as a keepsake for his wife and children and as a personal memorial to the Korean men and women who fought and in many cases died to help him accomplish his mission. The manuscript lay in a safe deposit box for decades and only came to light because historian and novelist Thomas Fleming happened to come across it in doing research for an article about Clark's exploits.
Now I have found another such book, "Operation Broken Reed: Truman's Secret North Korean Spy Mission That Averted World War III" (Carroll & Graf), similar to it in secretiveness and amazing events. Written (extremely well) by its central character, Lt. Col. Arthur L. Boyd (Ret.), and published in October 2007, it is the story of Boyd's participation as a 20-something Army Signal Corps lieutenant in a super-secret mission in North Korea in January 1952. Written as a compelling narrative rather than as a journal-like chronicle, there is so much about it that I like. The astonishing mission of course, but beyond that Boyd manages to give some flavor of the times and an understanding of his personal circumstances (married with a family). It has tension and a palpable sense of danger, and even touches of humor.
Operation Broken Reed had been authorized at the highest of high levels--President Harry Truman. Only he and his closest advisers, and the bare minimum of lower echelon people needed to get it prepared and in operation, knew of it. The little intelligence on the enemy that Truman had been getting was all but worthless. So a 10-man team of Army Rangers, Navy frogmen, Air Force officers and CIA operatives was landed by submarine into North Korea to collect intelligence on enemy capabilities and intentions to help Truman decide whether to escalate the war or work for a truce. They were accompanied by Nationalist Chinese from Formosa/Taiwan posing as Communist Chinese who supposedly had captured the team from a downed American airplane and were escorting them to captivity.
Boyd was selected for the mission because he was a highly qualified Morse code radio operator, was trained and experienced in cryptography, and had a top-secret security clearance. He was to transmit information the team gathered to aircraft over the Sea of Japan. Discovered and ambushed, seven of the team were killed, leaving Boyd alive with two grievously wounded men whom he believes may have died later. In a desperate flight, the wounded reached their rendezvous point and were rescued by an Air Force helicopter that had been called in by a Royal Navy warship that spotted their distress light signal.
Here's the rub: There are no records, transcripts, or other evidence of the operation. Everyone on the mission went under an assumed name (Boyd was "Sergeant Michael Lavern Baker, U.S. Air Force, B-29 radio operator"). Boyd is the only known survivor. He was sworn to secrecy until 1998. Troubled all his life by memories of the brave comrades killed, he decided to write the book to honor their memories.
That is the story Boyd tells. Some readers will consider it to be literally incredible--that is, untrue, incapable of credibility--because of the lack of any corroborating evidence. This is understandable. All I can say is that, as a person with more than a passing interest in and knowledge of the Korean War, I find it to be at the very least highly plausible. I find it to be at the very least highly plausible. Abundant circumstantial evidence held by Boyd and historical evidence enumerated within the book's afterword by Jay T. Young, a former CIA senior military analyst, give great credence to the mission's authenticity. Boyd, now 81, has made a plea for anyone having knowledge or evidence of the mission to come forward and make it publicly known.

Conflicted Reviewer
By Aloysius Oneill
I have been quite conflicted over this book, from the basic issue of whether such an operation took place to the less fraught question of whether everything happened as described by LTC Boyd, and whether it had the crucial significance he attributes to it. I want to believe that the story of this astonishingly bold and dangerous mission in early 1952 is completely authentic. As described in the book, LTC Boyd and those with him, American and Nationalist Chinese, were among the bravest men in the Korean War. He and nine others were to impersonate a downed B-29 crew (infiltrated into North Korea by an unidentified US sub) being moved across the peninsula by their Chinese captors (actually Nationalists in Peoples' Volunteers uniforms). Along the way then-LT Boyd was to encrypt and transmit, by Morse code, reports from other Nationalist teams on enemy strength and intentions, reports that bypassed the intelligence and operational chain of command and went directly to President Truman. (Unlike some reviewers, I didn't think the use of Nationalist soldiers was improbable; the US used Japanese-crewed minesweepers to clear Inchon harbor, an incendiary fact that was long kept secret.) At the end, Boyd and two other wounded US survivors were picked up off North Korea's west coast by a Royal Navy surface vessel, also unnamed.

One of the oddities in this story is the selection of Boyd himself, plucked from a tour as a Signal Corps officer in Germany, to disappear for who knew how long. In the entire Pacific area, were there no Signal Corps lieutenants with the requisite clearances and crypto skills?

Another quirk of the book is that LTC Boyd writes of the Korean situation in late 1951 and early 1952 as if it were the fall of 1950 and almost as if MacArthur were still in command, with all his hubris and deeply flawed approach to intelligence, especially regarding the Chinese. But by the time of Operation Broken Reed in January 1952, MacArthur was long gone and the armistice talks at Panmunjom had been going on for seven months. While they would drag on for another 18 months until the Armistice Agreement was signed in July 1953, the lines of what was to become the DMZ were largely fixed. It is certainly true that Truman was under intense pressure from many, especially in Congress, to expand the war, both in terms of geography and the types of weapons that could be employed. Truman himself had earlier caused a furor when, responding to a reporter's leading questions on November 30, 1950, he said he would take whatever steps were necessary. When pressed, Truman made clear he included the atomic bomb, continuing "there has always been active consideration of its use" and that MacArthur (who had not yet been fired) had the authority to decide to use the weapons. Nearly instantly, the White House stated that the President had misspoken, but the British in particular were terrified.
By late 1951, however, Truman and his key military and diplomatic advisors were adamant that a negotiated stalemate, not escalation, was the only way out of the war. One wonders how Truman would have used information from Operation Broken Reed to refute his critics. Could he have said that because of a super-secret ground mission in North Korea he knew that escalation was too dangerous? The information from an operation like Broken Reed would have been much more useful to the Joint Chiefs and General Ridgway in a military context than to Truman in the turbulent US political arena.

Feeding my skepticism is the knowledge that after the Viet Nam War there were many lurid accounts of ultra-secret "black" missions behind enemy lines with no records kept, false names, etc. etc., which turned out to be frauds, concocted by people who either had never served in that war or who had been supply clerks. There were indeed clandestine operations in Viet Nam, conducted by extraordinarily brave men from MAC-SOG, SEAL teams, South Vietnamese "Road Runner" teams and others. I spent two and a half years as an Army advisor with Vietnamese forces -- in circumstances of only occasional and mild enemy action -- but the fraudulent stories from that war kept popping into my mind as I read Operation Broken Reed.

There were covert missions in Korea, some as hair-raising as the one LTC Boyd recounts. Several of them are found in "Shadow Warriors: The Covert War in Korea" by William B. Breuer. These include the remarkable actions of CDR Eugene Clark in preparation for the Inchon landing and other feats along the coast, including by Americans who advised anti-Communist partisans in North Korea. And although "Shadow Warriors" leaves something to be desired in terms of notes and documentation, it is miles ahead of "Operation Broken Reed" on that score. In his own posting on Amazon.com, LTC Boyd writes "Abundant historical, circumstantial and presumptive evidence abounds supporting the authenticity of the mission." Unfortunately, that's one big lack in his book.

If this operation was declassified in 1998 (in itself an odd 46-year classification period, the significance of which I can't decipher), it is strange that no one with knowledge of the operation has come forth to vouch for any detail of it.

Whatever the facts of Operation Broken Reed, I think LTC Boyd did himself a disservice by using novelist Michael Peterson as a ghost writer because the style of the book sounds more fictional than LTC Boyd presumably intended. (Peterson seems to have a flair for invention. According to a Wikipedia entry, he has claimed he received a Purple Heart as a Marine for injuries in a car accident. If so, that must be a first for the USMC.) There's an awful lot of detailed dialogue quoted throughout the book. And although certain intense events do make a lasting impression, recounting minute-by-minute conversational details after the lapse of a half century seems strained at best. While writing this, I read a June 6 Washington Post review by Jonathan Yardley of quite a different book in which Yardley saw the identical problem. Writing of that book's "frequent and extended passages of dialogue," Yardley "can't help wondering ... how much is accurately remembered and how much is sheer invention."

I know from several things LTC Boyd has written that he believes in Broken Reed. Ultimately, he knows what he did. I am more or less willing to accept that the operation took place but I think that the organizers of the mission gave then-LT Boyd an exaggerated impression of its significance, though not of its dangers.

'Tolly, I know you said you were fine, but I was passing anyway, and I thought I'd just drop in and—' Shona did a double take and stopped short. 'What happened to your hair?'

'I cut it last night.' With nail scissors. The long, straight blonde hair Harry had said he loved was no more. And at least getting rid of it had been Polly's choice. Something that was under her control.

'Cut? Hacked, more like. Has Fliss seen it?'

'Um, no.' And Polly knew her best friend would panic, remembering what Polly had done half a lifetime ago. Her lowest point, when she'd sworn that her life would be perfect from then on, no matter how hard she had to work at it. When she'd learned to smile her way through absolutely anything.

Shona blew out a breath. 'We need to get you to the hairdresser's. Like now.'

Polly waved a dismissive hand. 'I'm fine. It's not as if anyone's going to see me. I don't have to go in to the studio.'

'That, sweetie, is where you're wrong. Coffee, first,' Shona said crisply. 'And, while I'm making it, you need to get changed. The sort of stuff you wore for Monday Mash-up will be just fine.'

'I don't work on Monday Mash-up any more.' Polly shrugged. 'Anyway, I'm busy.'

'Doing things that Harry really ought to be doing, since he was the one who called off the wedding,' Shona said, her mouth thinning.

'I'm the one who organised it, so it's easier for me to do it. I have the contacts,' Polly pointed out.

She left unsaid what they were both thinking: it also meant that Grace wouldn't be involved. Cancelling the wedding arrangements less than two weeks before the big day was tough enough; letting her ex-fiance's new girlfriend do it would be just too much to bear. And she knew that Harry would definitely delegate cancelling everything: he'd give that little-boy-lost look that always got him his own way.

'I could strangle Harry, I really could. Selfish doesn't even begin to—' Shona stopped. 'But you already know what I think. OK. Go and get changed while I sort the coffee and make that hair appointment. Oh, and put some stuff under your eyes.'

To cover up the shadows Polly knew were there. It was one of the disadvantages of having fair skin; even one night without sleep meant she had dark shadows under her eyes. She hadn't slept for several, since Harry had told her that he couldn't marry her.

'I do love you, Pol, but…'

As he said the words, someone filled her veins with liquid nitrogen. Freezing her. But.

That meant Harry didn't love her at all.

'. .it's as a friend. There just isn't the kaboom,' he finished.

'Kaboom?' She didn't have a clue what he was talking about. How was this happening? Was she in some parallel universe?

'Kaboom. When you meet someone and it's like the sky's full of fireworks.' He gestured wildly, mimicking starbursts in the sky. 'A thousand red balloons floating into the sky.'

She still didn't have a clue what he meant. When she saw Harry, she didn't see dangerous fireworks or balloons that could pop and leave her with nothing. She saw warm and safe and secure. And she'd been so sure he'd felt the same. That they'd be together for ever. That theirs would be one of the marriages people looked up to in showbiz—one that lasted, instead of being over almost as soon as the publicity photos had been printed. Because she and Harry were friends. They fitted. Polly wasn't going to have the same kind of on-again, off-again relationship that her parents had, in between their affairs. This would be a proper marriage. Harry's family liked her. His friends liked her. And her friends liked Harry and his easy charm.

They were a couple.

Except now it seemed that they weren't. And her head couldn't process it. 'I'm sorry, Pol.'

And then Harry told her about Grace.

His new assistant, who'd made him feel the kaboom—the way Polly never had…

Polly shook herself and changed into one of the bright long-sleeved T-shirts, jeans and trainers she'd worn on Monday Mash-up, then swiftly added enough make-up to erase the shadows and the pallor from her face. And then she pinned on her brightest smile, ready to face the world. By the time she'd finished, Shona had made them both a coffee and was speaking rapidly into the phone.

'I've managed to get you in with Enrique in twenty minutes,' she said. 'I've told him it's urgent. And we'll take a taxi to make sure we get to the studio in time.'

'Which studio?' Polly asked. 'And in time for what?'

Shona shoved one of the mugs towards her. 'Drink this. I put enough cold water in it so you can chug it straight down. I need you awake. Because, sweetie, you're going to be on Ballroom Glitz. Starting tomorrow!'

This was definitely a parallel universe. Polly had just walked out of a steady job, knowing that there was a recession on and she'd be lucky to find a waitressing job to tide her over until her agent managed to get her so much as an audition, let alone find something she'd enjoy as much as she'd loved her role as a children's TV presenter. And now Shona was talking about a new contract on a new show? She couldn't quite take it in.

''Ballroom Glitz? Since when?'

'Since I got a phone call from the producer an hour ago saying that someone had had to drop out and asking if I had anyone on my books who could fill the slot,' Shona explained. 'Obviously there are other people auditioning for it—but you're going to be the one who gets it, Pol.'

Polly appreciated the older woman's faith in her—right now, her faith in herself was pretty shaky—but she knew it was misplaced. 'Shona, I've got two left feet. Look at the mess I made of it when Danny tried to teach me those dance moves on the show.'

Shona rolled her eyes. 'Danny's not as experienced in teaching as the guys on Ballroom Glitz are. And street dance isn't the same as ballroom. You're going to be great.' She patted Polly's shoulder. 'And if you trip or make mistakes, so what? It shows you're real. People will be able to identify with you, Polly.'

Polly couldn't help smiling. 'I'm hardly an A-lister, Shona. Monday Mash-up isn't even on terrestrial telly. Nobody's going to have a clue who I am.'

'People like you. They identify with you, and Fliss would tell you the same.'

'Fliss is my best friend. She's supposed to say things like that.'

'It's still true,' Shona said firmly. 'That's why the "Challenge Polly Anna" segment was so popular on Monday Mash-up. You did the things people wanted to try doing themselves. And you didn't always beat the challenge—so they knew it was true to life, not something set up with all the flaws airbrushed out. You're going to learn to dance with one of the professionals, and every woman in the country, young or old, will be able to imagine themselves in your shoes. They'll love your warmth and that amazing smile of yours. And that, sweetie, is exactly why you're going to nail this audition and be on the show.'

'What about the costumes?' Polly asked quietly. 'They let me have long sleeves on Monday Mash-up.'

'They can do the same thing on Ballroom Glitz. If not long sleeves, then cuffs or fingerless elbow-length gloves,' Shona reassured her. 'Nobody needs to see your wrists and nobody's going to ask questions. Don't worry.'

Easier said than done. Polly dreaded the wardrobe department seeing her wrists and asking questions—or, worse, speculating. Especially if they thought the scars were because of Harry. Which they weren't.

But being on the show could make a huge difference to her life. It'd mean eight whole weeks of work, if she managed to stay in the competition until the finals. Even if she was voted out at the first elimination, it still meant that she'd have two slots of prime-time exposure—slots that could lead to other opportunities. Plus dancing was something physical that might just tire her out enough to let her sleep in her new flat instead of lying awake and realising how wide the bed seemed without Harry in it, wondering where she'd gone so badly wrong and why she hadn't been enough for him. And she'd have to concentrate on the training, so she wouldn't have time to think about the wreck of her life.

Everything could be perfect again. Far, far away from the lowest point in her life all those years ago. The point that had led to her scars and the long, slow climb to the settled and happy life she'd wanted so badly.

Yeah. She could smile her way through this. Fake it until you make it.

'I've always wanted to learn to dance,' Polly said. She pushed away the memories of her five-year-old self begging for ballet lessons and her father's sneered refusal. Fairy ballerina? Fairy elephant, more like. You're too clumsy, Polly.

She lifted her chin. 'We've got the lemons. Let's go make lemonade. With a sparkly swizzle stick in it.'

Shona patted her shoulder. 'Attagirl.'

Six hours later, Polly was back in her flat, making a list of the last few things she needed to cancel for the wedding and answering concerned emails from friends with the minimum of details. Even if she didn't get the Ballroom Glitz job, at least she had great hair. Enrique had somehow managed to transform Polly's appalling scissor-job into an urchin cut that made her look like a blonde Audrey Hepburn, all eyes. And in any case the audition had been good practice, reminding her of the skills she needed to brush up on...

I'm personally not one to watch reality shows, I much rather prefer to keep my nose on the inside of a good book. But when I read the back-cover copy of this book and noticed it's about celebrity dancing I figured I might need to take a peak at the real thing before reading the book.

So I took a little peek at the shows first before I read this book and what I found was that I really love the heat and passion that goes into the dancing and just how addictive the on screen emotions between the dancers can be.

I was a bit concerned that I would not find the same heat and passion in the book as the on screen is of course more realistic and in a book if the author does not convey that same realism the read falls flat.

Kate Hardy however gave me every single bit of heat, passion and flare I wanted and the added bonus of romance blossoming between the main characters Polly and Liam was perfection!

Polly was a very delightful character, and her always smiling her way through everything got me thinking that smiling is definitely the best way to handle most upsets in life. Smile and your enemies will never know what you are really up to, however when Polly is alone and the smile is no longer needed it also showed me that dealing with everything by smiling and never letting yourself really show another emotion in the presence of others will eventually take their toll and let the whole world think you are a easy come what may person and if they hurt you it won't matter as you smile everything away.

Liam was awesome! I very much admired this character for his courage to get back up and out there again to prove a point and become what no one ever thought he would be. Through this character the author showed that all it takes is determination and hard work and in the end it will pay off.

I'm taking a message of life hits us hard sometimes but if we keep pushing to claw your way back up to the top you might just meet others along the way that will show you the direction you are actually meant to be going.

A very awesome cuddle up with your best bear romance read!

Highly recommended for all lovers of romance.

BALLROOM TO BRIDE AND GROOM by author Kate Hardy is Harlequin Romance and Mills & Boon Cherish release for February 2013.

Polly Anna Adams was officially 'resting' as in out of a job. Her fiancé told her there was no 'kaboom' in their relationship just days before they were supposed to get married. And then left her to pick up the pieces. Cancel all the wedding arrangements. Then her agent walked in and made her go to the audition of a TV celebrity dancing show.

Her dancing instructor was Liam Flynn. And meeting Liam, Polly felt the 'kaboom' but did Liam also felt that? He was trying to get his career off the ground after some set back. Would Liam let what he felt distract him from his career goal?

BALLROOM TO BRIDE AND GROOM takes a reader through the various dancing ways and I loved reading it. The chemistry between Polly and Flynn was scorching hot, while dancing and off the cameras. Author Kate Hardy brought to life a gorgeous hero hurt by past hurts and a strong, spritely heroine who also had baggage in her past. Then how she brings these two characters to their happy ever after is just fabulous to read.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

they danced right into my heart
By Beth Cutwright
My mother loaned me this short romance novel and it was a very enjoyable read. It was not a sexually explicit read although there is mention of such activity. Both Polly Anna and Liam are well defined characters, each suffering from a world of hurt at the hands of their previous love interests and each has a lot to overcome before they can allow themselves to fall in love again. But the human spirit is strong and getting that second chance is what we all seek when hurt. The story definitely centers around the two of them....other characters contribute to a phone call conversation or to the judging team of Ballroom Glitz. Polly Anna must come face to face with her biggest fear/shame in life and finds it to be a freeing experience with the help of her dance coach. If you like clean romance stories, this is a sweet and fun read!

I was not compensated in any way for this review....I just enjoyed reading a clean simple romance story!

The Ambassador's Daughter, by Pam Jenoff

Paris, 1919.
The world's leaders have gathered to rebuild from the ashes of the Great War. But for one woman, the City of Light harbors dark secrets and dangerous liaisons, for which many could pay dearly.

Brought to the peace conference by her father, a German diplomat, Margot Rosenthal initially resents being trapped in the congested French capital, where she is still looked upon as the enemy. But as she contemplates returning to Berlin and a life with Stefan, the wounded fiancé she hardly knows anymore, she decides that being in Paris is not so bad after all.

Bored and torn between duty and the desire to be free, Margot strikes up unlikely alliances: with Krysia, an accomplished musician with radical acquaintances and a secret to protect; and with Georg, the handsome, damaged naval officer who gives Margot a job—and also a reason to question everything she thought she knew about where her true loyalties should lie.

Against the backdrop of one of the most significant events of the century, a delicate web of lies obscures the line between the casualties of war and of the heart, making trust a luxury that no one can afford.

From Booklist
Fans of Kate Morton and Alyson Richman should reach for popular Jenoff’s latest historical romance. Naive German national Margot Rosenthal arrives in 1919 Paris prepared to play the dutiful daughter to her sweetly absentminded diplomat father as he attends a peace conference. Engaged to Stefan, a soldier wounded in the war, Margot holds fast to the flame of his love while trying to enjoy some brief freedoms before marriage. Instead, she discovers a Paris vibrant with people, parties, and unexpected complications as the simple reality she thought she knew morphs into a murkier place of secrets, betrayal, cunning, and lies. She meets intriguing musician Krysia Smok, a Polish woman who instantly takes Margot under her wing and introduces her to a less-sheltered worldview. Yet it’s when Margot meets Georg, a German naval officer, that her heart fiercely demands a life she hadn’t realized she was longing for. Framing Margot’s personal story with the larger scope of the early twentieth-century world, Jenoff (The Kommandant’s Girl, 2007) ably plumbs the concepts of courage, faith, and love against a dramatic backdrop. --Julie Trevelyan

Review
"With luminous simplicity, Jenoff's breathtaking debut chronicles the life of a young Jewish bride during the Nazi occupation of Krakow, Poland, in WWII...This is historical romance at its finest."-Publishers Weekly starred review on The Kommandant's Girl

"In her moving first novel, Jenoff offers an insightful portrait of people forced into an untenable situation and succeeds in humanizing the unfathomable as well as the heroic."-Booklist on The Kommandant's Girl

"Beautifully researched, with realistic dialogue, The Kommandant's Girl is impossible to put down. Don't miss this terrific novel!"-Romance Reviews Today

"I have not been so moved by a book in quite some time as I was by The Kommandant's Girl...The remarkably accurate account of a world at war, and the repercussions of that war, make this a brilliant debut novel...Historical fiction at its best. I could not put the book down, yet was sad to see it end."-Historical Romance Writers

"[The Diplomat's Wife], Jenoff's stirring sequel to her debut...Historical romance fans will be well rewarded."-Publishers Weekly starred review

"In [her] successful and satisfying second novel...Jenoff explores the immediate aftermath of World War II with sensitivity and compassion, shedding light on an often overlooked era of European history. She expertly draws out the tension and illustrates the danger and poverty of Eastern Europe as it falls under communism. Highly recommended for all fiction collections."-Library Journal on The Diplomat's Wife

Decent Historical Fiction
By Julie Merilatt
I gravitated towards this book because it takes place during the peace conferences in Paris after World War I and thought there would be some intriguing political commentary about reparations. Told from the perspective of a delegate's daughter, Margot is not directly involved in any of the political goings-on, but gets second-hand information from her father. Margot is not an entirely reliable narrator because she is a very conflicted character for a number of reasons. For one, she is a German Jew who spent the war in England while her father was a professor at Oxford. She has a fiancé who was gravely injured in the trenches, but she hasn't seen him in 4 years and she is very hesitant about her future with him. Her father encourages her to think for herself and to be independent, but within the guidelines of propriety. She meets a German naval officer at the conference and is immediately attracted to him, and though she admits her feelings to herself, outwardly she adamantly denies them. Margot is often disloyal and contradictory, but despite her flaws, she was a fallible and believable character, especially since she was not a conventional woman for 1919, disliking formality and yearning for independence.

Even though this book wasn't as much about the post-war negotiations as I had hoped, I still enjoyed it. I appreciated that there were a number of surprising revelations that were brought to light throughout the story. Jenoff captures the atmosphere of Paris and Versailles during the conference and the dejected mood of Germany when Margot returns home. There is a good balance of historical fiction, intrigue, self-discovery and romance that will appeal to a wide range of readers.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via Media Muscle.

Somewhat Frustrating
By Sonoma Lass
This was a problematic book for me. There were things I really enjoyed about it, and things that hampered that enjoyment and left me ultimately a bit frustrated.

I liked the setting, the Paris talks that resulted in the treaty that ended WWI. That's a period I'd like to see more of in historical fiction, especially fiction with strong romantic elements. The "war to end all wars" was unlike anything before it, and the terms of the treaty shaped much of what came after. Plus it is an important period in the history of women's rights, the beginning of widespread women's suffrage in the Western world.

What frustrated me was how limited the book's view of all this was, largely due to narration in the first person and present tense. Margot is excluded from much of what's going on at the peace conference; instead, she's focused on her own feelings and conflicts, about which she is mostly passive. To be honest, I found her whiny at times, unwilling to take the difficult steps to change her life and her future, but also unwilling to make the best of what she chose not to resist. She's also naïve, and because of the narrative voice, there are very few opportunities for the reader to see beyond Margot's narrow view.

The book is written well, from the point of view of language use, but I had to struggle to finish it, mostly because I didn't care about the characters all that much for most of the book. Towards the end I was more invested, but then came a series of reversals and revelations that seemed too sudden, too close together, and just too much after the rather slow development earlier. Especially without any narrative insight into Georg's real character, I wasn't sure whether to root for them as a couple or not.

Without spoilers, I'll just say that the ending was also problematic. I thought what happened was a bit of a cheap trick, but I did like Margo's choice of how to deal with it.

Overall, I'm glad I read the book, even though I was frustrated by its constraints.

OK
By Susan Johnson
2.5 stars
This novel had a different perspective that could have been quite interesting. Unfortunately, for me, it never delivered its promise. Set after WW1 in Paris, Margot arrives at the famous Reparations Conference with her father, an university professor who is a delegate to it. Although German and Jewish, they spent the war at Oxford University in England and so avoided many of the hardships their fellow countrymen endured.

Margot is engaged to a wounded soldier. After four years apart she no longer is in love with him. She meets and falls in love with a German naval officer. She also meets a reactionary group of friends who long to influence the conference with their view of the future. They want Margot to be a spy for them.

This could have been interesting but is basically a dressed up romance novel. It's better than a romance novel but not as good as a literature novel. I think if you are fans of Nora Roberts or Danielle Steele, you might really enjoy this. Unfortunately, it's just not my cup of tea.

What I needed
By Christy Rew
There isn't much out there in the way of reference material for SCSM 2012 and this book helped me configure it for our organization.
It is a "cookbook" so it doesn't go into a lot of detail, which I would have liked to see. We upgraded so a lot of things I needed to figure out I had to go to other resources for.

I would recommend it though for anyone needing a good reference material.

Good book about SCSM 2012
By Damir Dizdarevic
Anyone interested in System Center Service Manager 2012, is likely to find interesting new Service Manager Cookbook, published by Packt Publishing and written by several MVPs and MCT, the experts in this field. Since Service Manager 2012 is much more than just another product from the System Center family, and you definitely can't just click it through, it is more than advisable to consult the literature of this type before entering the stage of planning and deployment. The book therefore begins with the story of a rather non-technical ITSM Framework and processes, ITIL, Asset Management, Service Request, Incident and Problem Management and the IT Service Desk processes and operations. The first chapter ends with a discussion of service level management, which is a very important component. The rest of the book is divided into 11 chapters and two appendices, deals with the administration and configuration of Service Manager 2012, from the standpoint of its individual components and resources they manage, but also on the processes that are carried out within a manageable IT infrastructure. It ends with a chapter on the automation of processes through the Service Manager which is probably what everyone aspires. Very valuable source of information, I recommended this!

A nice instructional workbook
By Aaron Corcoran
There is not much out there on Service Manager 2012 quite yet, so I purchased this as quickly as possible. While there isn't a lot of NEW information (meaning information you can't find out there on blogs), this book provides you a nice, easy to follow, centralized guide for your necessary modifications. While you can find what you need on the blogs, I would still recommend this book as an informative guide for those wanting to utilize service manager.

Most books on 2012 are system center wide, only dedicating a chapter or so to service manager. It was worth the money to grab the Kindle version. I'm sure as time progresses, more material will be made available, but for today's context, this was a great addition.
