I Will Trust in You: A Companion to the Evening Psalms, by Michael Sadgrove

In his introduction to this beautifully written companion to the Evening Cycle of Psalms (as set out in the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer), Michael Sadgrove reminds us that the Psalms have been central to public worship and personal prayer for the entire history of the church. They are indeed one of the world's greatest spiritual treasures- in the words of Martin Luther, 'full of heartfelt utterances'- and are as vital a source of comfort, challenge and inspiration to people of faith today as they have ever been. I Will Trust in You will greatly benefit anyone who wishes to engage more deeply with the riches of the Psalms.

Review
"'Psalm 55 helps us not to expect religion to provide easy "closure" for the dilemmas that confront us. Rather, it invites us to see faith as a divinely given space in which to take the painful unfinished business that accumulates over a lifetime, and where we learn to live before God in both the light and the shadow. And if, overwhelmed by pain, or the threat of disaster, or the memory of betrayal, all we can manage is the psalmist's final whisper, "but I will trust in you", the God who is enthroned from of old will assure us that it is enough.' only available brief commentary for 30 day cycle
By pilgrim woman
If you pray the anglican daily office, you will find this book helpful, as it links the groupings of psalms thematically. It has helped me to pray rather than merely read. Unfortunately half the psalms--those for the morning--are not included.

There are a lot of typographical blunders in the kindle edition, mostly random hyphens where they should not be: worse than any free ebook, and disgraceful when one has paid $9.99.

As a Christian, I am offended by the consistent references to "BCE" as opposed to BC--before Christ. Whatever the designation, we count our years (currently 2,013 of them), from the time of Jesus Christ. I wonder that a Christian bishop would not celebrate that fact, rather than give the appearance of apologizing for it.

Butterfly People: An American Encounter with the Beauty of the World, by William R. Leach

With 32 pages of full-color inserts and black-and-white illustrations throughout.

From one of our most highly regarded historians, here is an original and engrossing chronicle of nineteenth-century America’s infatuation with butterflies, and the story of the naturalists who unveiled the mysteries of their existence.

A product of William Leach’s lifelong love of butterflies, this engaging and elegantly illustrated history shows how Americans from all walks of life passionately pursued butterflies, and how through their discoveries and observations they transformed the character of natural history. Leach focuses on the correspondence and scientific writings of half a dozen pioneering lepidopterists who traveled across the country and throughout the world, collecting and studying unknown and exotic species. In a book as full of life as the subjects themselves and foregrounding a collecting culture now on the brink of vanishing, Leach reveals how the beauty of butterflies led Americans into a deeper understanding of the natural world. He shows, too, that the country’s enthusiasm for butterflies occurred at the very moment that another form of beauty—the technological and industrial objects being displayed at world’s fairs and commercial shows—was emerging, and that Americans’ attraction to this new beauty would eventually, and at great cost, take precedence over nature in general and butterflies in particular.

Guest Review by Robert Michael Pyle

Robert Michael Pyle is the author of The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Butterflies .

Butterfly People is the most exciting butterfly book I have read in years: open it anywhere, and the pages spread to reveal stories, spangles, and mysteries as beguiling as any butterfly's pattern. Bill Leach takes us on an extraordinary flight among the collectors, scientist- artists, and other pioneers of butterflies who gave us their names, first studied their lifeways, and otherwise brought them to public attention in America and abroad. Everyone who suffers from an unquenchable love of Lepidoptera will find deep delight and endless fascination in Bill Leach's masterful history of this universal human passion for the most beautiful of insects. Dead and dry in books, the names of people intimately associated with our beloved butterflies—Edwards, Scudder, Strecker, Holland, many more— live and breathe in these enchanted pages. After fifty years of butterfly study, I feel as if I finally know the great and very human lepidopterists I have idolized since boyhood. Nor are they lives of monotonous ecstasy in the Elysian fields—ecstasy there is in plenty, but it is set among scenes of salty struggle, venal ego, mortal drama, and heroic striving that, taken altogether, made for the greatest century of butterfly art and understanding ever achieved. I know no better window into the exciting era of Darwinian encounter with novel life forms than this--to be sure, a thrilling read for all contemporary Butterfly People.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Historian Leach (Country of Exiles, 1999) was wild for butterflies as a boy, and he now turns his exuberant joy in their winged beauty into a unique celebration of nineteenth-century American butterfly fanatics. Naturalism was all the rage, fueled by Darwin’s discoveries, and butterfly people collected, bred, and studied vast numbers of the resplendent butterfly species that then flourished on the land’s “agrarian tapestry.” With scintillating precision and original, paradigm-shifting interpretation, Leach tells the intriguing, delvingly researched life stories of such lepidopterological trailblazers as William Henry Edwards, a coal-mine manager who wrote the landmark, three-volume Butterflies of North America, and stone carver Herman Strecker, whose father tried to beat his youthful obsession with butterflies out of him but who persisted and amassed America’s largest butterfly collection, now housed at the Field Museum in Chicago. Leach astutely considers how pursuing butterflies “placed people inside the fullness of nature,” engendering crucial ecological understanding, even as escalating industrialization caused environmental destruction. Replete with forays into the creation of butterfly guidebooks and art, the mania for exotic specimens, and a history of the butterfly net, Leach’s astute and exciting inquiry into a time of heightened awareness of “the beauty of the world, in both its natural and its artificial forms,” delivers new understanding of our past and present. --Donna Seaman

From Bookforum
The particular rapture of butterfly collection and study, the sensuous delight of this most painterly branch of entomology, was commonly voiced by its nineteenth century adherents, as historian William Leach notes in his new book,Butterfly People. The vivid, intimate connection with nature that the butterfly people cultivated and celebrated in the course of their scientific study is now almost forgotten—and along with its extinction, we have not merely lost the habitats and species detailed with such care a hundred years ago, but also some essential part of humanity. Leach's book is a brilliant work of history, but it's also a compelling lament for a lost way of existing in the world.—Britt Peterson

An Historic Examination of Lepidoptery in America
By David B Richman
While browsing in a bookstore in Edmonds, Washington, I came across this very specialized history of butterfly and moth study in the United States during the Nineteenth Century. Certainly in "Butterfly People: An American Encounter with the Beauty of the World" William Leach has created a most attractive tome. The book is worth the cost just for the beautiful reproductions of Nineteenth Century plates of butterflies and moths. However the casual reader might be tempted to think that this is a book full of dull facts about a very narrow field in a rather uninteresting historical period. In this they would be in error, as the study of the Lepidoptera gave exciting insights into evolution, genetics (eventually), distribution and ecology, as well as behavior. Not only that, but the lives of the lepidopterists makes fascinating reading. Most of the people involved, such as William Henry Edwards, Theodore Mead, Henry Edwards, Samuel Scudder, Augustus Grote, Holland, and others, led lives that were not isolated from the events of the day and in very human fashion they had their disagreements, which could become quite bitter. Leach has well captured the excitement of natural history as practiced by the best in the field, some of whom studied not only the adults, but the immature stages, from egg to pupa, as well. These were for the most part experts in their areas and they contributed to numerous areas of biology, not just limited to butterflies and moths. Among other contributions they were early pioneers in the study of the entire life cycles of their organisms, and these researches led to a much deeper understanding of the butterfly and moth fauna than just collecting (although important in its own right) did.

I have two, very minor quibbles. On pp. 121-122 Leach consistently misspells Theodore Dru Allison Cockerell's name as "Cocherell." As Cockerell was a biology professor here in the 1890s at the then New Mexico College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts (Now New Mexico State University) I am well acquainted with him. Also on p. 162 the author states "The most notorious parasitoids belong to the Ichneumonidae, a populous family of flies and wasps that encompass the genus Ichneumon." In fact the Ichneumonidae are ALL parasitoid wasps (none are flies) and there are numerous genera and species, only a relatively few species of which are in the genus Ichneumon (about 140 in the Nearctic.) However I have so far not found any other such typos that I could discern.

I would advise the reader who has any interest in the history of science in the United States, or who is interested in butterflies and moths or the art of producing color plates of these beautiful insects (usually prepared by women), to get a copy of this book and read it in its entirety. It would be well worth it.

The Elusive Butterfly of...love?
By Art Shapiro
Technically it may be an ethical violation for me to review this book, since I was consulted regularly by the author, read the MS and offered detailed feedback, and blurbed it on the jacket. So naturally I think it's wonderful. Objectively, it is. But to pique the interest of potential readers, I will mention something that isn't obvious: the great butterfly workers of the 19th and early 20th centuries may have been splendid scientists, but they were often prickly and difficult people. There's more fussin', fightin' and feudin' in here than in a history of the moonshining industry. And it's fascinating stuff that sheds light on how science actually gets done and evolves over time...which one would expect, given that the author is a distinguished historian, not a pulp writer. As they say, it's a great read. Check it out.

Grab Your Net and Become Entranced
By Rob Hardy
Who is not cheered by the sight of a butterfly? Other insects pain, impoverish, or sicken us, but butterflies are "flying flowers" or "winged jewels," or at least those are a couple of the ways eighteenth-century butterfly enthusiasts referred to them. Alfred Russel Wallace was the co-discoverer of evolution, and he appreciated butterflies as examples of descent with modification, but he also said that the use of the butterfly's colorful wings was "to add the final touches to a world-picture, calculated at once to please and refine mankind." Indeed, he found collecting one specimen so thrilling that he wrote, "On taking it out of my net and opening the glorious wings my heart began to beat violently, the blood rushed to my head, and I felt more like fainting than I have done when in apprehension of death. I had a headache the rest of the day." That's the sort of passion that inspired many others, and in _Butterfly People: An American Encounter with the Beauty of the World_ (Pantheon), historian William Leach tells how Americans were afflicted with the butterfly madness during the nineteenth century. Leach is a butterfly enthusiast, and that is one reason he wrote the book. If you don't share that passion, don't worry; there are enough odd characters and backbiting here to keep things interesting, plus plenty of insights into insect science, ecology, and the mindset of American entrepreneurs of the time.

Though many families had butterfly nets, Leach of course concentrates on those collectors who made the biggest of collections, or had the biggest business in selling or trading specimens, or did scientific research or published guides to butterfly identification. One was Herman Strecker, a memorial stone carver with a collection of 200,000 specimens. Another was William Henry Edwards, who operated coal mines but also raised butterflies in his house. There was Harvard-trained entomologist Samuel Scudder who named the monarch butterfly. Augustus Grote, who besides expertise in butterflies and especially moths was a self-taught composer and a historian of religions. The butterfly people may have been inspired by the highest ideals of nature and beauty with their study of these gentle creatures, but they often descended into cranky complaints about each other, even to character assassination. Even readers who aren't especially interested in butterflies will find amusing the teapot tempests which engrossed these lepidopterological giants. Some of the conflict was scientific. As was the pattern for natural history at the time, enthusiasts might have started their collections as a way of praising the complex works of God, but then wound up finding more and more evidence that species were the product of evolution. Edwards was, for instance, a staunch advocate of evolution, which he thought accounted for his observations in his butterfly-raising experiments. Scudder started out believing that every species was created immutably by God, and only after many years of argument came around to the scientific view. That isn't to say that the two agreed; they had huge arguments over taxonomy. When Scudder proposed a new scheme of classifying species, Edwards called it one that "only Alice in Wonderland would understand," and asserted it was his mission to keep everyone from its "bogs and pitfalls." There were inevitable arguments about credit for discovering species, or payments for specimens. Grote accused Strecker of stealing specimens from the Museum of Central Park, and continued the accusations for decades. He called Strecker "that entomological spider!" Grote and Edwards disagreed on much, but Edwards joined in the calumny, calling Strecker "an illiterate, uneducated man who could not possibly identify all the insects he collects. He is a maniac." The antagonists enjoyed calling each other in print fools, liars, clowns, and (unkindest cut) "a classificator without ideas." Even Edwards wondered, "What is there about our science that makes one type of men so inflammable, and another rascals and thieves?"

The arguments presented afresh here are long over, and alas, so is the degree of passion for the lovely insects. Part of the change came from changes in ecology; you can read here about collectors eager to net specimens from the woods and fields of Brooklyn or Staten Island. The railroads that had made it easier for collectors to get into the pristine landscape also degraded the habitat of the butterflies, as did the rise of the suburbs, the decline of family farms, and the boom in industrial logging. Pinned specimens became less important when researchers could easily review inexpensive and accurate color images. The butterfly people were on an aesthetic quest, valuing the ineffable beauty of their specimens, as well as a scientific quest for hard data and microscopic examinations. Beauty merged with science for them, but lepidopterology is now firmly in the scientific realm. Leach has given a thoughtful review of a way of thinking about nature that is no more, in a book with splendid reproductions of butterfly pictures out of the volumes the butterfly people produced. The book is an extended look at a tiny realm of American entomological history, but with insightful views of larger historical, scientific, and ecological issues.

Closing the Gap: Lombardi, the Packers Dynasty, and the Pursuit of Excellence, by Willie Davis, Jim Martyka, Andrea Erickson Davis

Describing how NFL great Willie Davis helped define the hard-nosed, in-your-face defense of the original football dynasty, the 1960s Green Bay Packers, this revealing autobiography also illustrates his persona off the field—humble yet ambitious, with an infectious smile and a reputation of strict discipline that matched his leadership mentality. The book recounts the competitor as one of the game’s strongest, quickest, and most agile defensive linemen in his time, showcasing a team captain who led the Green and Gold to five championships and earned a bust in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Distinguished from many other athletes of his generation, Davis's success continued well after he took off his pads. His reputation as one of the most respected businessmen in America is discussed, including his time serving on the board of directors for Fortune 500 companies, taking part in various foundations, and speaking to audiences of all ages about his experiences. From growing up in a poor, segregated small town in the South to the intense pressure he endured as a college athlete contemplating his future, this evocation pays homage to a man who has worked hard to achieve all that he has, always appreciating the fruits of his labors with care, respect, and devout passion.

Uplifting Story about a Packer Great!
By JoanMaj
Being a Packer fan from birth, I knew that I would enjoy Mr. Davis's stories about the Glory Days of the Green Bay Packers. What was a delightful surprise about this book were the life lessons that I learned along with the stories. When you read this book, you get a recipe for how to be committed to your team, to your business and to yourself. Willie tells his story in a way that makes you feel very connected to him and I must admit, as he told the story of each championship season, game by game and sharing the behind the scenes observations, it took me back in time to those Sunday afternoons sprawled out on the floor listening to the games with my family - jumping up and down every time the Packers scored! And we sure spent a lot of time jumping around! I also enjoyed all of the stories about Willie shared by his friends and associates. This book weaves all of Willie's memories and achievements both on and off the field into a beautifully written tapestry of green and gold!

No Wonder Those Packer Teams Were So Great!

CLOSING THE GAP: LOMBARDI, THE PACKERS DYNASTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE by Willie Davis, with Jim Martyka and Andrea Erickson Davis

To many, Willie Davis was "a football player for Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, who went on to have some business success after his playing career ended." In CLOSING THE GAP, the reader will learn that Davis was just as adept, successful, and respected in his business ventures as he was on the football field.

In CLOSING THE GAP, Davis delivers an entertaining account and perspective of his life and career - both football and business. The book is broken down into 30 chapters, starting with his pre-teen days, when he first became interested in business. The bulk of the book covers his football career, starting with high school, where he had to talk his mother into letting him play (she was afraid that he would get hurt), his college and NFL playing days. The last 10 chapters cover his business career. The book is well written with no major writing or editing errors. Being a Packer fan helps but any football fan or someone that is interested in running a business will enjoy this read.

Early on, it becomes apparent that Willie Davis is something special. At an early age, he took on the role of caregiver of his younger siblings in his fatherless home while his mother worked. This is when mentors - particularly his mother - first made an influence in his life. Willie realized early that obstacles would always be in his path to success, but they were not going to stop him from achieving his dreams; they would only make him stronger.

The football chapters cover high school; college; the pros, where he spent his first two seasons with the Cleveland Browns and his final ten with the Packers. The majority of the coverage is his time with the Packers. Although his early years were a big influence, it is lessons learning during the football years that made the biggest impact on his life. He credits his coaches, particularly Vince Lombardi, his teammates, and even his fans for his success.

The last ten chapters cover the business side of his life. This includes the ownership and rejuvenation of a Schlitz beer distributorship, the ownership of radio stations, and board membership of many prominent companies. Don't worry football fans; Willie doesn't stray too far from the gridiron, as he interjects lessons learned from his playing days into his businesses practices. The commerce chapters are just as interesting as those that covered football.

By the time I had finished reading the 30th and final chapter, I was really amazed by what Willie Davis had accomplished in his life - not only on the football field (no wonder why those Packer teams were so great!), but maybe even more so off of it. I had the privilege of meeting Willie twice, including a book signing for this tome. Both times he came across as a warm, caring individual, someone that I would enjoy working for. I could see why he was a success. One appendix at the end has 32 people from his personal life, his playing career, and his business careers speak of his success, accomplishments, and his influence. The reader will know that the accolades are well deserved and true.

Any Packer fan - or even a non-Packer fan - will appreciate this book. The great Packer teams of the 1960s were before my time, thus I never saw Willie Davis play, but I still enjoyed the book and do recommend.

Awesome read
By Bob Hall
I just finished reading Willie's book. If you recall the early days of the Super Bowl, the Lombardi legacy, the Packer greats and the great NFL players they played against, you must read this book. It will take you back to an era that simply doesn't exist any longer. Willie's success on the football field carries over into his business success. A must read for all gridiron fans and business people alike.

A thinly veiled portrait of San Francisco’s North Beach is the setting of this novel, and its newest resident is Reno, an angry fledgling just hatched out of prison. Getting out is like a weird dream, and the streets of the city are a muddle of sensations pooling around her. Staggering out onto the late-night streets, Reno ends up at the infamous Istanbul Club: dim lights, Arabic music, and sensual Su’ad dancing. She soon encounters the club’s cast of characters. There’s Huntington, the poisonous charmer who lives above the club and is perverse and powerful in the way only the wealthy can be, and Eddie, the underage bartender who is happy to chemically enhance every waking moment. Slowmotion, the sound and light technician, huge and darkly mysterious, has connections to people and places that Reno didn’t even know existed. Slowmotion’s elegant friend, Poppy, offers mental transport to realms beyond Xanadu; in her little valise there’s everything necessary for any trip. The owner of the club, handsome gambler Sinclair, hires Reno to waitress. Grumbling, drinking, snarling and swearing, Reno bangs her way through everyone else’s complicated plans, entangling herself in a byzantine labyrinth of betrayal, revenge, general mayhem, and even some good times. The first novel to focus on tough female, queer, outlaw culture in the Bay Area, this new edition features an exclusive interview with the author.

Review
"Meandering through pools of booze and moments of tawdry sex and petty larceny, Soracco's dense, bravura narrative is a triumph of (hard-boiled) style."  —Library Journal

"Brilliant . . . Edge City is truly an extraordinary book in every way: story, people, atmosphere, writing."  —Hubert Selby, Jr., author, Last Exit to Brooklyn

"Sin Soracco cooks! Her writing is beyond hip—it struts and whistles down the last dark mile. Edge City, like her Low Bite, is the bad girl's version of Mean Streets, an unbeatable double-feature for the fearless."  —Barry Gifford, author, Wild at Heart

Awkward in his own skin, shy around girls and worried about anything and everything, Jason Evans is just like a million other teenage boys in high school, with one very large exception: he has been given a gift that allows him to jump through time. A set of stones has fallen into his lap that gives him access to any place - and any time - that he chooses. But along with that gift comes the responsibility of stopping the man who is using those very stones to travel through time and change history for his own purposes. A man who is now holding Jason's grandfather hostage, and threatening the world's very existence. Jumping through time with his best friend and body guard, Jason must enter the world of Medieval England, learn its customs, navigate unimaginable danger, and help Henry VII win the Battle of Bosworth, in the name of finding his grandfather, rescuing a beautiful girl from the clutches of a corrupt church, and destroying the one man who pledges to turn history inside out.

Gr 7-10-Nerdy, messy-haired, and intelligent, Jason Evans is the grandson of a physicist. Life seems pretty normal for the 14-year-old and his equally geeky, smart-aleck friend Paul, until the day Jason discovers his grandfather's journal. What he reads makes him question the old man's sanity, but as strange things begin happening, Jason is convinced that Doc's exploits are real. He has traveled back through time to 1485, where he is the Earl of Oxford, an advisor to Henry Tudor in his battle with King Richard III for England's throne. Doc's efforts are being thwarted by Lord Dresden, who is really Doc's modern-day foil Nicholas Fleming, a man with a maniacal plan to change history and take over the world. Unable to stop Doc before he jumps once again, Jason, Paul, and a tough-as-nails bodyguard hired to protect the family plan their own journey back in time to help him. Things get even more complicated when Nicholas's teenage daughter insists on tagging along. McHugh does a good job creating a sense of time and place in both centuries, presenting vivid historical details as well as believable present-day bantering.-Wendy M. Scalfaro, G. Review
I'm really pumped about KEEPER OF THE BLACK STONES by PT McHugh. The perfect older book for Riordan fans." -- Stephanie Wilkes, librarian

From the Inside Flap
I've gone by many names, but it's always been me.

I met Anne Frank before she wrote her diary. I consulted with Churchill on political doctrine. I crossed the Potomac with Washington. I even polished Napoleon's shoes in the streets of Charleroi, once, though it's not a story I like to tell. I've been in too many places to name, and done things I never thought I'd do. All in the name of saving history, and saving the world we call home.

I realize that these boasts won't be taken seriously, but I must remind each of you that at one time the earth was flat, the atom unbreakable. And the thought of reaching the moon was just as ridiculous as the idea of jumping through time.

I know, because I was there.

Pure fun!
By Jessica N.
Meet Jason Evans. A sweet, slightly awkward and wonderfully quirky main character. He's certain that something odd is going on with his grandfather, but he can't quite put his finger on what. Until, that is, some really insane things start happening and he finds out that time travel is actually possible. Sound like a recipe for an amazing read? You would be right my friends, you would be right.

I can't deny that it was Jason's personality that really sold me on this book. The beginning drew me in with its mystery, but it was Jason himself that kept me reading. The more I read, the more I fell in love with the way the author builds a normal boy who just so happens to be a time traveler. Even better, McHugh pairs our hero with quite the set of companions! Ranging from witty, to sassy, to downright kick-ass, this is an entourage that I would absolutely want to travel with.

Better still was the writing style of the book. I'm not generally a huge fan of meshing history and science fiction. Most authors have the habit of just spouting facts at the reader. After reading Keeper of the Black Stones though, my opinion has changed. P.T. McHugh balances the historical side of Jason's story with the perfect amount of action and intrigue. I knew I was watching history unfold, and I couldn't tear my eyes away from the words on the page. I was so immersed, so involved with the characters, that before I knew it I was turning the last page.

This book is so much fun to read. That's really the long and short of this whole review. No matter what else I say, it boils down to the fact that I utterly enjoyed each and every page. The characters are fresh, the writing is wonderful, and there isn't a dull moment. Keeper of the Black Stones is pure fun and I can't wait for more.

Great new book in a cool genre!
By B. Karanikolas
I've been a fan of young adult books for quite a while, and an avid reader of all things historical fiction about the Plantagenets and Tudors. I was so excited to discover Keeper was a brilliant fusion of everything I love! The book is well written and the plot moves along nicely and draws you in. Highly recommended for middle schoolers.. Manages to sneak a history lesson in amidst the fun and adventure. /)

Fantastically fun time travel adventure - perfect for young readers!
By Mary Fan
GENRE
Science Fiction—Young Adult/Fantasy

Keeper of the Black Stones walks the line between science fiction and contemporary fantasy. As a time travel adventure, it fits in with sci-fi novels such as Michael Crichton’s Timeline or the movie Back to the Future. On the other hand, the time travel device utilized, a set of black stones, seems magical. The protagonist, Jason, is able to communicate psychically with them, and little explanation is given as to how they work other than a mention hereand there about physics theories. Much of this novel takes place in 1485 England at the edge of the War of the Roses, in which Henry Tudor overthrows Richard III. For this reason, it also contains elements of historical fiction.

Keeper of the Black Stones is the first novel in a series, and while a self-contained story, the ending is a real cliffhanger.

PACE
Keeper of the Black Stones hooks a reader in with the promise of adventure, introducing the time travel element at the very beginning. The pace ebbs and flows, with some parts being as page-turning as any thriller and others slowing down to allow the reader to take in their surroundings—to get to know the characters and settings. As the stakes are raised, the pace speeds up, and by the time I reached the second half, I’d defenestrated any notions of putting the book down.

PERSPECTIVE
This book alternates between first and third person. The majority of the book is written from Jason’s first person past perspective, in his voice and describing only what he sees. The rest of the book alternates between the various third person perspectives of other characters, such as Jason’s grandfather, Doc, and the villain, Dresden.

CONTENT REVIEW
Keeper of the Black Stones opens in 15th century England, where the Earl of Oxford leads his army. The Earl is actually Dr. Richard Evans, a time-traveling professor on a mission to stop Lord Dresden, another time traveler, from changing history. Jason Evans, the Doc’s fourteen-year-old grandson, stumbles upon his grandfather’s journal. Although incredulous at first, he is soon pulled into the quest. The titular black stones, devices that allow one to jump through time, call to him, sending him visions of disaster to come. The power-hungry Dresden plans to alter the outcome of the War of the Roses for his own purposes and kill Doc. It comes down to Jason to stop him.

At first glance, Jason is anything but the man for the job. At his high school, he’s the introverted dork the other kids either pick on or ignore. However, he possesses an internal strength that surprises even himself at times, a foolish determination to do whatever it takes to save the day. McHugh’s decision to write Jason’s scenes in first person makes the reader privy to Jason’s thoughts, making it easy to sympathize with him. As he finds himself in situation after situation, Jason pushes past his fears with dogged resolve.

Keeper boasts a colorful cast of characters. Jason is accompanied on this adventure by his best friend Paul, who has the tendency to crack bad jokes at inappropriate times, including an homage to Back to the Future. Protecting them both is a no-nonsense body guard called Reis, hired by Doc to keep Jason safe from 20th century forces pursuing the black stones. And then there’s the arrogant and tough Tatiana, a girl Jason’s age who blackmails her way onto the trip to the 15th century. She is Dresden’s estranged daughter, and she bears a hell of a grudge.

Dresden, meanwhile, is a classic psychopathic villain, one who admits outright that his goal is one of oldest in existence: he simply wants to rule the world. With the time traveling power of the black stones, he plots to change history to his own advantage, never mind that it could endanger the existence of the universe.Truly despicable and sharply conniving, he makes a great antagonist, one you can’t wait to see squashed and yet love to watch in action.

The plot twists and turns in so many directions that it’s virtually impossible to predict what will happen next. The build-up to the time jump contains all the elements of an action movie—mysterious motives, shadowy figures, and an explosive gunfight. Although stopping Dresden is the primary plot of this novel, one gets the idea that there are more forces at work. Jason’s journey into the 15th century is filled with danger from every angle, from medieval thugs to capture by Dresden’s men. McHugh does an excellent job of setting the scene, including historical details that create an immersive experience. Encounters with Richard III and Henry Tudor, the future Henry VII, add an exciting element of “what if?”

In Keeper, McHugh has given us a thrilling combination of fantasy and historical fiction. It’s a time travel adventure that had me restlessly flipping through the pages. Jason's spirited voice—snarky at times and thoughtful at others—breathes life into the story and escalates it to something truly absorbing. Clever, courageous, and wonderfully nerdy, this is the kind of tenacious underdog we all like to root for.

THE NITPICKY STUFF
I read an advance copy of this novel, and so I can’t speak to the final version. I can tell you that the version I read was quite clean and error-free.

This book contains action movie and medieval style violence, but nothing particularly graphic or gruesome. Its content is suitable for young readers.

Strategies for Resisting Terrorism Nonviolently
By Michael D True
Tom H. Hastings, Nonviolent Response to Terrorism. Jefferson, NC:

McFarland & Co., Inc., 2004. $39.95. 244 pp. ISBN 0786418745.

This imminently readable, informed, and well-documented survey of

the best thinking about nonviolent responses to terrorism combines the

concrete experience of an activist and the theoretical knowledge of a

scholar. It emphasizes the intimate connection between developing

and using nonviolent structures and between short-term and long-term

responses. In four chapters devoted to immediate nonviolent

response, it describes the strengths and limitations of smart sanctions,

meditation, law, and nonviolent resistance, including nonviolent

interposition. Similarly, the final four chapters discuss long-term

nonviolent response, such as halting the arms race, building

sustainable economies, educating about peace cultures, and

repatriating refugees. The author indicates how recent experience and

research around the globe have increased activists' skills in

international negotiation, mediation, and adjudication. Three insightful

reflections on terrorism, in an appendix, along with appropriate

references and a detail index, make this book an ideal introduction to

recent movements for social change throughout the world. An

invaluable contribution to various disciplines associated with peace

and conflict studies, it relies on essential scholarship on nonviolence

theory and strategy along the way.

A must read for anyone concerned about our future!
By Ashleigh E. Tripp
I just finished reading this book and it was more than I expected. I actually took a class from Tom at PSU and was more intrigued than ever to develop my own personal ideas about nonviolence, and the role it plays in our world. This book was thought provoking, and it led me to question certain "truths" that I had held dear. It's not all a stuffy or technical read. It was honest and forthcoming, and I appreciated all the clear information. I would recommend this book to eveyone from a CEO's of corporations, military personnel (especially!), tree-loving hippies, and angst-ridden college students! It's that good!

Peace!

50 Rules Kids Won't Learn in School: Real-World Antidotes to Feel-Good Education, by Charles J. Sykes

Charles J. Sykes offers fifty life lessons not included in the self-esteem-laden, reality-light curriculum of most schools. Here are truths about what kids will encounter in the world post-schooling, and ideas for how parents can reclaim lost ground---not with pep talks and touchy-feely negotiations, but with honesty and respect. Sykes's rules are frank, funny, and tough minded, including:

#1 Life is not fair. Get used to it.
#7 If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he's not going to ask you how you FEEL about it.
#15 Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it "opportunity."
#42 Change the oil.
#43 Don't let the success of others depress you.
#48 Tell yourself the story of your life. Have a point.

Each rule is explored with wise, pithy examples that parents, grandparents, and teachers can use to help children help themselves succeed---in school and out of it.

A few rules kids won't learn in school:
#9 Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn't.
#14 Looking like a slut does not empower you.
#29 Learn to deal with hypocrisy.
#32 Television is not real life.
#38 Look people in the eye when you meet them.
#47 You are not perfect, and you don't have to be.
#50 Enjoy this while you can.

From Publishers Weekly
Expanded from an original list of 14 first broadcast on his Milwaukee, Wis., radio talk show, the latest book from Sykes (Dumbing Down our Kids) equips parents to help tween- or teenage children find success in life beyond school. Taking on the education system's "modern bubble-wrap mentality" of "no losing, no disappointments, no harsh reality checks," Sykes takes a hard-line but humorous approach to instilling the discipline, morals and good sense that keep kids from becoming "sulky, self-centered, spoiled brats." Consider Rule 19: "It's not your parent's fault. If you screw up, you are responsible"; or Rule 14: "Looking like a slut does not empower you." Rules are largely rooted in common sense ("Change the oil"), traditional values ("Don't forget to say thank you") and the wisdom that only time can bring ("Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could"), and get fleshed out in punchy, chuckle-worthy commentary. Though he can be harsh ("You are not a victim. So stop whining"), Sykes helpfully points out that "Grown-ups forget how scary it is to be your age," and also that "You are not perfect, and you don't have to be" (illustrated in an amusing story about Mother Teresa misapplying a bandage); parents will appreciate Syke's no-nonsense style, but teenage readers may find him condescending (see Rule 21: "You're offended? So what? No, really. So what?").

Excellent!
By K. Wagner
Charlie Sykes, once again, proves that common sense isn't completely dead.

A few examples:
Rule #1: Life is not fair. Get use to it.
Rule #9: Your school may have done away with winners and losers. Life hasn't.
Rule #14: Looking like a slut does not empower you.
Rule #30: Zero tolerance=zero common sense.
Rule #35: If your butt has its own zip code, it's not because McDonald's forced you to eat all those Big Macs. If you smoke, it's not Joe Camel's fault.
Rule #36: You are not immortal.

Some simple truisms that could benefit both kids, and adults!

Good points, poor writing style
By N. Peterson
There was a lot in this books that really opened my eyes to why kids do what they do. I had a pretty boring opening day for deer hunting season, so I read it in one sitting. This book is a commentary basically on the loss of common sense, respect, and proper parenting that many kids are experiencing today. Most of it I agreed with, though some points may have been a bit unnecessary, but probably were inserted to make it to the magic #50.

I would say that I would recommend this book to any high-school junior or senior (maybe even college freshman). However, the writing style gets to be monotonous. If you've ever heard Charlie Syke's radio show, you know that he writing in much the same way as he speaks. I think that it doesn't translate very well to text. However, some great points are made. He is very direct and does not mask his intentions, and that is what I really loved about this book.

All parents should read this book
By love2learn
I heard this author on a local radio station. He was very entertaining but spoke about important issues I've been seeing in young adults today. I bought this book and enjoyed it so much that I'm purchasing more to give to others I feel should read it as well. His rules are right on and they are delivered in a real but amusing way.

If you are interested in helping a young person in your life become a better, stronger young adult, I highly recommend this book.
