About the Author
John Hope Franklin (1915–2009) was the James B. Duke Professor of History Emeritus at Duke University. He is the author of many books, including Mirror to America: The Autobiography of John Hope Franklin and Racial Inequality in America.

A good survey of the period

A well supported challenge to what was then (the time of the book's writing) view of reconstruction. However, it is very brief and one almost has follow the reading of this book with another, more in-depth survey. The years 1865-1877 are probably not as studied as they should be. Some of the early works were politically tainted by the right. More recent works are likewise tainted by the left. Dr. Franklin's work reads to this student as being extremely objective.
