After her last politically minded suitor left her heartbroken and pregnant, Rowena has sworn off the Capitol Hill dating pool. But even she isn't immune to Colin Middlebury's British charms, and his skills extend beyond the political arena.

As a diplomat, Colin has dealt with a lot of demands, but none like Senator Tate's warning to stay away from his beautiful daughter. Rowena Tate clung to what shred of patience she still possessed as her father's personal assistant, Margaret Wellington, warned her, "He said to tell you that he's on his way over now."

"And…?" Rowena said, knowing there was more.

"That's it," Margaret said, but Rowena could tell by her voice, the slight rise in pitch, that she was leaving something out.

"You're a worse liar than I am."

Margaret sighed, and in that sympathetic tone said, "He wanted me to remind you to be on your best behavior."

Rowena took a deep, calming breath. Her father had informed her by email this morning that he would be bringing a guest to see the day-care center. He'd demanded—not asked, because the great Senator Tate never asked for anything—that she have things in order. He'd suggested, not for the first time since she'd taken over the management of his pet project, that she was still impulsive, irresponsible and inept—labels that he apparently would never let her live down.

She looked out her office window at the children on the playground. Five straight days of rain had finally turned to sunny skies, and the temperature was a pleasant sixty-five degrees—about the norm for Southern California in February. Dressed in spring jackets, the day-care kids darted around, shaking off a severe case of cabin fever.

She could be in the world's worst mood, and watching the kids play always made her smile. Until she had her son, Dylan, she'd had little interest in children. Now she couldn't imagine a more satisfying career choice.

And she knew, if she wasn't careful, he would take that away from her, too.

"He's never going to trust me, is he?"

"He put you in charge."

"Yeah, but after three months he still watches me like a hawk. Sometimes I think he wants me to screw up, so he can say I told you so."

"He does not. He loves you, Row. He just doesn't know how to show it."

Having been her father's assistant for fifteen years, Margaret was like part of the family, and one of the few people who understood the complicated relationship between Rowena and her father. Margaret had been with them since before Rowena's mother, Amelia, caused an incredible scandal by taking off with the senator's protege.

And people wondered why Rowena was so screwed up.

Was, she reminded herself. "Who is it this time?" she asked Margaret.

"A British diplomat. I don't know much about him, other than that he's lobbying your father to support a tech treaty with the U.K. And I think he has some sort of royal title."

The senator probably loved that. "Well, thanks for the heads-up."

"Good luck, honey."

The buzzer sounded, announcing her father's arrival. With a heavy sigh she pushed herself out of her chair, took off the paint-smudged vinyl smock she'd worn for the morning art project and hung it on a hook in the closet, then headed through the activity room and out to the playground to open the gate, which was kept locked at all times. To keep not only the children in, but strangers out. With a man as powerful and influential as the senator, and the day-care center on the grounds of his estate, one could never be too careful.

Her father stood on the other side, dressed for golf and wearing his plastic politician's smile. Then her eyes settled on the man standing beside him.

Whoa.

When Margaret said British diplomat, Rowena had pictured a stuffy, balding, forty-something elitist with an ego to match his bulging Swiss bank accounts. This man was her age or close to it, and there was nothing stuffy about him. His hair was the color of dried wheat, closely cropped and stylishly spiky. His eyes were a piercing, almost eerie shade of blue that had to be tinted contacts, and were curtained with thick dark lashes that any woman would sell her soul for. And though he might have been a royal in title, the shadow of neatly trimmed blond stubble and a small scar bisecting his left brow gave him an edgy look. He was several inches taller than the senator, which put him somewhere around six-three. As lean as he was, he should have looked lanky; instead, he was perfectly proportioned.

The rebel in her said, Come to mama. But the logical Rowena, the mature adult, knew from experience that powerful, sinfully attractive men were the worst kind of trouble. And unfortunately, the best kind of fun. Until they took what they wanted and moved on to greener pastures. Or, as had happened with her son, Dylan's, father, knocked her up and abandoned her. She punched in her code, opened the gate and let them in.

"Sweetheart, I'd like you to meet Colin Middlebury," the senator said—sweetheart being a term he only used when he was milking his family-man image. "Colin, this is my daughter, Rowena."

The man leveled those remarkable eyes on her and flashed her a grin that was as much smirk as smile, and her heart went pitter-patter.

"Miss Tate," he said in a silky smooth voice punctuated by a crisp accent that, if she were still the type to swoon, would have had her fanning her face. "It's a pleasure to meet you."

Oh, the pleasure is all mine, believe me. She glanced over at her father, who was wearing his behave or else look.

"Mr. Middlebury, welcome to L.A.," she said.

"Please, call me Colin." His grin, the slight lift of his left brow, made it feel more like a dare. And when he shook her hand, she felt a delightful little tingle.

Wow, it had been a really long time since a man had made her tingle. Most of the men her father brought around were stodgy old politicians with clammy hands, roaming eyes and greedy smiles. The kind whose power in politics made them believe they were irresistible to anything with two legs and a pair of breasts.

"Colin will be staying here at the mansion while we iron out the details of a treaty I'm sponsoring," her father said. "Two or three weeks."

This was usually the worst part of being a politician's daughter—having to play the role of the polite hostess, when on the inside she was grinding her teeth. But when the guest looked like Colin Middlebury? Well, he could be the world's biggest jerk, but at least the view was nice.

Looking in the direction of the playground, her father asked, "Where is my grandson?"

"He's upstairs with his speech therapist," she said. The main floor of the building served as the day-care center, while the upper floor was set up to accommodate a variety of physical, speech and occupational therapy equipment. That way her son, Dylan, could receive all the therapy he needed and she could run the day care without interruption. Her father's idea, of course. Only the best for his grandson.

"When will he be finished? I'd like Colin to meet him."

She glanced at her watch. "Not for another thirty minutes. And he shouldn't be disturbed."

"Another time," Colin said, and asked Rowena, "Will you be joining us at Estavez for dinner tonight?"

Heck yes. She would love to. But a stern look from her father made the correct answer to that question more than obvious.

"Maybe some other time," she told Colin.

"Colin," her father said, "why don't you and I take a quick tour inside."

"Fantastic," Colin said, and maybe it was just the accent, but he sounded genuinely excited.

"I started this project two years ago," the senator told him proudly as they walked to the building, not mentioning—he never did—that the initial idea had been hers.

"Hey, Row!"

Rowena looked across the playground to where Patricia Adams, the assistant manager—and also her best friend—stood watching the kids on the monkey bars. She fanned her face and mouthed the word wow.

No kidding.

Only a few minutes passed before her father and Colin reemerged from the building, and she could see instantly that the senator was in a huff about something.

"It would seem that someone left paint on the edge of one of the tables and it's gotten onto Colin's pants," he told her, and while his tone was reasonable, his jaw was clenched and his eyes had that if-I-get-any-angrier-I'm-going-to-pop look about them.

Colin, in contrast, seemed unfazed, despite a rather large magenta smudge on his left pant leg. "It's really no problem," he said.

"It's a water-based, washable paint," Rowena told him. "A little soap and water should take that right out. I'm sure Betty, our housekeeper, can take care of it for you. But if for whatever reason they're ruined, I'll replace them."

"That certainly won't be necessary," Colin said.

"Well, we should let you get back to work," her father said, flashing his plastic smile. "Colin, would you excuse me and my daughter for a moment? I just need a quick word with her."

Oh boy, here we go.

"Of course. I'll start back up to the house."

She followed her father into the building, then, he turned to her and said, "Rowena, all I ask when I bring a guest in is that you have the center clean and presentable. Was it too much trouble to wipe up a paint spill? Colin is royalty, for God's sake, an earl, not to mention a war hero. What possible reason could you have to be so rude?"

If he was a war hero, he'd probably had a lot worse than paint spill on his pants, she thought, but she didn't dare say it.

Like so many times before, she swallowed her pride—and even managed not to gag at the bitter aftertaste—saying, "I'm sorry, we must have missed some when we cleaned up. I'll be more careful next time."

"If there is a next time. If you can't manage something as simple as wiping up paint, how can you be expected to adequately care for children?"

"I'm sorry," she said. She didn't know what else to say.

"After all I've done for you and Dylan…" He shook his head, as if he had no words to describe her audacity and selfishness. Then for dramatic effect, he stormed out in a huff.

She slumped against the wall, angry and frustrated and yes, hurt. But not defeated. He could keep knocking her down, but she would always get back up again.

"Hey, Row?"

Tricia stood in the doorway, looking concerned. "You okay?"

She took a deep breath, squared her shoulders and forced what probably looked more like a grimace than a smile. "No big deal."

"I heard what he said about the paint. That was my fault. I asked April to wipe the tables down and I guess I forget to check if she'd missed anything. I know how picky he is when he brings people in. I should have been more careful. I'm so sorry."

"Tricia, if it hadn't been the paint, it would have been something else. You know that he always finds something."

"It's not right the way he treats you."

"I put him through a lot."

"You've changed, Row. You've pulled your life together."

"But I wouldn't have been able to do it without his help. You can't deny that he's done a lot for me and Dylan."

"That's what he wants you to think. But that doesn't make it okay for him to treat you like an indentured servant. You would manage just fine on your own."

She wanted to believe that, but the last time she'd been on her own she had made a total mess of her life.

"You know the offer still stands. If you and Dylan want to come stay with me for a while."

And the instant she left, he would cut off not just her but Dylan, as well. And without the money to pay for his medical care, her father would have all the ammunition he needed to take Dylan away from her. She'd been hearing that threat since the day Dylan was born. It was the ultimate punishment, and she didn't doubt for a second that he would do it.

"I can't, Tricia, but I love you for offering."

Her own irresponsibility and carelessness were what had gotten her into this mess, and she was the only one who could get herself out.

Colin had never put much stock in rumors. In a royal family, even on the outermost fringes, gossip spread like a disease. Which was why, when he heard the speculation about the senator's daughter, out of fairness and respect, he reserved judgment. And maybe he was missing something, but she'd seemed all right to him. Of course, she could have had two heads and hooves for feet and he would have been perfectly gracious.

This assignment was Colin's first go as a diplomat, and certainly not somewhere he had intended to be at this point in his life—or ever, for that matter—but he was making the best of an unfortunate situation. He had been warned that when dealing with American politicians, especially one as powerful and influential as Senator Tate, he would be wise to watch his back. The senator was a man who got things done. When he put the weight of his office behind legislation, his colleagues naturally fell in line. The royal family was counting on Colin to ensure that the tech treaty, a crucial piece of legislation for both the U.K. and the U.S., became law.

Too many high-profile instances of phone and internet hacking had been occurring in both the U.K. and the U.S. A tech treaty would give international law enforcement the tools to see that the guilty parties were brought to justice.

Due to illegal hacking, President Morrow had been outed as having an illegitimate daughter by the press at his own inaugural ball in front of family, friends and celebrities. Even worse, his supposed illegitimate daughter, Ariella Winthrop, had been standing a few feet away from him when the news broke and was taken by complete surprise herself.

The U.S. was finally willing to negotiate. It was up to Colin to see it through.

He'd made it nearly halfway up the bricked trail to the mansion when Senator Tate caught up to him, saying, "Again, my apologies."

"As I said, it's not a problem."

"It's no secret that Rowena had problems in the past," the senator said. "She has worked hard to overcome them."

Still, the senator seemed to keep her on a very short leash. It was silly to get so upset over something as simple as spilled paint.

"I think we've all done things we're not proud of."

The senator was quiet for several seconds, then, looking troubled, said, "Can I be direct with you, Colin?"

"Of course."

"I understand that you have something of a reputation as a womanizer."

"I do?"

"I don't mean to imply that I would hold that against you," the senator said. "How you lead your life is your business."

Colin wouldn't deny that he had dated his share of women, but he was no cad. He never dated a woman without first making it absolutely clear that he was in no hurry to settle down, and he never promised exclusivity.

"Sir, this so-called reputation of mine sounds a bit hyperbolic."

"You're young, in your prime, and I don't fault you for playing the field."

Colin sensed an unspoken "however" at the end of that sentence.

"Under normal circumstances I wouldn't even bring it up, but I've welcomed you into my home for an extended stay, and I should make it clear that there are certain ground rules I expect you to follow."

Ground rules?

"My daughter can be very…impulsive and in the past has been a target for unscrupulous men who think they can use her to get to me. Or simply just use her."

"Sir, let me assure you—"

He held up a hand to stop him. "It's not an accusation." It certainly felt like one.

"That said, I must insist that as long as you're staying in my home, you are to consider my daughter off-limits."

Well, it didn't get much more direct than that.

"Can I count on you to do the right thing, son?"

"Of course," Colin said, unsure if he should feel slighted or amused or if he should pity the senator. "I'm here to work on the treaty."

"Well, then," the senator said, "Let's get to work."

Sometimes the most dramatic scenes in a high school theater club are the ones that happen between the actors and crew off stage.

Seventeen-year-old Tyler Darcy's dream of being a writer is starting to feel very real now that he's sold his first short story to a literary journal. He should be celebrating its publication with his two best friends who've always had his back, but on this night, a steady stream of texts from his girlfriend Sidney keep intruding. So do the memories of his dream girl, Becky, who's been on his mind a little too much since the first day of high school. Before the night is over, Ty might just find the nerve to stop all the obsessing and finally take action.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-Tyler Darcy, 17, is in love, but not with Sydney, the girl who's been his steady for the past two years. He looks back on his first day of freshman year, when Becky became his unending obsession before Sydney even came into the picture. He knew nothing about her when their eyes met in a cafeteria line. That's pretty much the extent of the encounter, but from that moment on, Tyler makes her the star of his evolving short story. He writes Becky into his perfect dream girl. Over time, as a friendship forms between the two, he can't see past the character he has created. He makes excuses for one telling incident after another, and because everyone else seems to know about her reputation, including Sydney, Becky assumes that Tyler does, too. It's not until his short story is published by a literary magazine that both Sydney and Becky are forced to face the truth. Tyler is not in love with Sydney; he is in love with a girl that Becky can never hope to be. In this spare, well-written romance, Leveen points out the many ways in which we, often unwittingly, deceive ourselves and those around us when we fall in love. Teens will recognize themselves in the course of their own early romances, and possibly begin to realize what a messy business love can be.-Cary Frostick, Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VAα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
It’s hard not to love the title of Leveen’s latest, though it is somewhat misleading. The object of 17-year-old Ty’s obsession, Becky Webb, is more of a moody goth. For three years, Ty has been maneuvering to get closer to Becky, maybe even to touch her. Did we mention Ty already has a girlfriend, Sydney? He does. It’s a setup ripe for standard romantic comedy follies, so it’s a pleasure to watch it play out into something more affecting. Sydney is a wonderful side character who deserves better—sexy, smart, and indulgent of Ty’s undying fantasy. Becky, meanwhile, feels less fresh—she is the inscrutable girl with a checkered past who just needs a guy to be nice to her. It is Ty who emerges as the (well-meaning) jerk, treating Syd shabbily while overidealizing Becky. The story unfolds over flashbacks during the night when Ty and Becky might finally hook up, and though it begins comedically (I lacked the testicular fortitude to make contact), it quickly turns morose—not a bad thing for folks who like their romances unresolved and realistic. Grades 9-12. --Daniel Kraus

Remember That Girl in HS That You Always Dreamed About?
By Ink and Page
Rating: 3.5

The Low Down: Ever since he first saw her freshman year, Tyler Darcy has been drawn to Becky Webb like a moth to the flame. She has no idea of his almost obsession with her; after all, in the beginning, he can't bring himself to speak to her, much less spill his secrets. All his friends know of his infatuation, hell, even his girlfriend knows. Syd is beautiful, smart and so cool. Why she puts up with his fixation is beyond him. But every chance he gets, he looks for Becky. Thinks about her. Writes about her. Concocts scenarios in which she falls madly in love with him. Writes about that. Even when they eventually become friends, he keeps her in the same box marked "perfect."

Watching closely makes you learn things, though. Things that maybe you don't want to know, things that might ruin your idea of perfection about someone. In Tyler's case, though, discovering certain things about Becky only makes him want to protect her. She's unwanted, both by her parents and the boys that use her, ignore her and spread tales about "Becca," the girl who doesn't say no.

But how do two people with such conflicting views of the same person ever get on the same page?

Best Thang `Bout It: I love that the protagonist is a male. A guy with a huge attraction who can't act on it. In fact, he can't stand up to any of his relationships: his girlfriend, who got that position because he said nothing; his sister, who, while is supportive, is frank about how she thinks Tyler needs to run his relationships; and his friends, Robby and Justin, who act like court jesters but who express their opinions about his lack of fortitude with both his girlfriend and his obsession.

If there's such a thing as a "healthy" obsession, this was it. The more Tyler learns about Becky's history, the more he wants to be her knight. But he can't act on it. First, it is because he doesn't know her and is too nervous to talk to her. Then he can't because of his girlfriend. So his best outlet is writing about it. The stories are fiction, though, and when Becky reads one, she can't believe that's how Tyler sees her. She says: "That won't ever be me!...They'd never let me...This is who I am now, I'm stuck with it."

This story just felt like real high school. Tunnel vision, letting life run you, not knowing how to handle hurt and big problems. Being a mess on the inside, being stupid, missing the obvious. Finding out that not everyone has a great home life. Discovering how much stuff people try to hide.

I liked how Syd was portrayed; she really knew what she was getting into when dating Tyler, but she was willing to take a chance. Her reaction to their discussion in the park toward the end of the story is perfect. No stereotypical mean girls or histrionics here, either. All the female characters felt real; flesh, bone and brains.

I'm Cranky Because: It just stops. Ends. No neat bow, no thanks for reading, no fiery car crash. Now, I don't really mind the "`nuff said" approach, but I felt like we were still on the on-ramp, and we were just getting ready to merge. Imagine being on a roller coaster on the biggest hill, climbing, climbing, and just before you reach the crest, it's over. No apex view, no plunge. Damn.

Also, this idea of Becky as the Manic Pixie Dream Girl? I can't tell if it is being used ironically, since it's a deeper story than that trope. (Unfamiliar with the term? Read about it at TV Tropes.) Where's the wackiness? The freedom? The spirited behavior? The opening up of the stuffy male lead? I didn't see it.

The Bottom Line: MPDGs aside, it's a good read that says "stop imagining; discover the truth instead." But be ready for what you uncover.

Manicpixiedreamgirl
By Angie
Manicpixiedreamgirl had me at the title. I knew exactly what this book was going to be about without even reading the blurb, and I was excited for it. Alternating between the one night that changes everything, and the three years leading up to it, we follow Tyler as he pines after Becky. He saw her on the first day of high school and she stayed with him, even though they didn't speak until he joined the drama club sophomore year. But by then he was dating Sydney. Now he has his chance to see if his manic, pixie, dream girl is actually the girl for him.

While I did like Manicpixiedreamgirl overall, I found myself bored with it at times. Which is a shame, since it's such a short book. That did make it feel longer since the story would drag in places. Tyler is head over heels for Becky but never does anything about it. Then he gets a girlfriend, and stays with her for two years despite his feelings for someone else. Although, Sydney is partly to blame too, since she admits to know that his affections lie elsewhere. But, it's the same thing over and over. Tyler says he's happy with Sydney even though he doesn't love her, then he hangs out with Becky (as just friends), then he's alone and all of his thoughts are of Becky. I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. There's something up with that girl that Tyler doesn't see and it needs to come out eventually! As do his feelings for her.

I did find the story very realistic though. I'm sure at one point we've all had a crush who we thought was unattainable but kept our interest while we moved on with our lives, whether that involved a relationship or not. I also liked how there wasn't any big dramatics when everything comes out in the open. Sydney is a very down to the earth and understanding person, and just tells Tyler like it is, and I think she understood that it was kind of on her for dragging out this relationship too. And Becky wasn't quite so manic, and off the rails (unlike John Green's MPDGs), so I was sympathetic toward her when she told Tyler about her problems. The only character I felt lacked depth were Becky's parents who are the root of her issues. They were very flat and clearly served the role of villains.

In the end, I liked Manicpixiedreamgirl. It was a different take on romance which I really enjoyed. Yes, it's kind of an entire story centered around insta-love, but Tyler does realize that maybe he has a hero complex which is why he's so focused on Becky. That's not exactly a good foundation for a relationship, but it does lead them to what I thought was a great friendship. The ending is a bit open, with the reader not knowing what comes next for them, but it does leave us with some idea.

Quick-witted and achingly real...
By Wastepaper Prose
This is my first Tom Leveen novel and I am head over heels for his writing. You can bet after reading this slim but superb novel about a young man chasing a vision of what he wants instead of appreciating what he has that I will be adding Leveen's other novels to my shelf.

Manicpixiedreamgirl opens on Tyler Darcy and his friends Rob and Justin celebrating after Tyler sells a short story to a literary magazine. After three years of pining for Rebecca, Tyler's forced to decide whether it's time to act or time to move on.

I can't say enough about this book. It's 256 pages of real people with real emotions, actions and reactions that is nothing short of absolutely compelling.

Every character is unique and steps outside of some of the stereotypical teenage characters you see in fiction. For example, Tyler's friend Rob is constantly evolving, changing his look and trying new things but never trying to become someone else. Vignettes that showcase this evolution are a testament to the teenage search for self that everyone goes through in high school.

Voice is the thing that gripped me most about manicpixiedreamgirl. Tyler tells his story as it happened. For the most part it's his unembellished, true account of what happened down to his self-doubt and reflection on his actions or lack thereof. His honest review of his past during a single day of his present is what made this novel so difficult to put down.

Tyler's obsession with Rebecca is lost on his girlfriend and two best friends. Rob and Justin wonder why Tyler put her on a pedestal and why he hasn't given up the dream, especially when Sydney is right in front of him.

Sydney is convinced that maybe Tyler will eventually realize what he has. All he needs is time and she's willing to be patient, but that day might be further away than Sydney thinks.

If you're looking for a fantastic read that nixes the melodrama of high school and overblown archetypes associated with it then your search ends with manicpixiedreamgirl. Simultaneously quick-witted and achingly real, Leveen's latest work is not to be missed.

Civic Myths: A Law-and-Literature Approach to Citizenship (Cultural Studies of the United States), by Brook Thomas

As questions of citizenship generate new debates for this generation of Americans, Brook Thomas argues for revitalizing the role of literature in civic education. Thomas defines civic myths as compelling stories about national origin, membership, and values that are generated by conflicts within the concept of citizenship itself. Selected works of literature, he claims, work on these myths by challenging their terms at the same time that they work with them by relying on the power of narrative to produce compelling new stories.

Civic Myths consists of four case studies: Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and "the good citizen"; Edward Everett Hale's "The Man without a Country" and "the patriotic citizen"; Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and "the independent citizen"; and Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men and "the immigrant citizen." Thomas also provides analysis of the civic mythology surrounding Abraham Lincoln and the case of Ex parte Milligan. Engaging current debates about civil society, civil liberties, civil rights, and immigration, Thomas draws on the complexities of law and literature to probe the complexities of U.S. citizenship.

From one of the most respected Americanists in the field, . . . Civic Myths speaks directly to our current legal and political climate. Thomas's forceful argument is both historically salient and utterly timely.

Review
Embraces the possibility of the literary artist as civic referee. . . . Illuminates and complicates the various ideals of citizenship. . . [by guiding] readers through the complex legal and historical terrain in which those ideals have been revealed. . . . A demanding and productive model of scholarship, as well as an insistent call for applying that scholarship to civic practice.--West Virginia History

From one of the most respected Americanists in the field, what is dramatized here is nothing less than the contradictions lurking in the utopian dream of a 'government of the people, by the people, and for the people.' Analyzing these contradictions, Civic Myths speaks directly to our current legal and political climate. Thomas's forceful argument is both historically salient and utterly timely.--Wai Chee Dimock, Yale University

Civic Myths provides an innovative contribution to the history of American citizenship that lies at the intersection of cultural criticism and legal studies. By deftly revealing how the social and conceptual contradictions implicated in competing visions of citizenship find their symbolic resolution in literary narrative, Thomas creates a powerful interpretive framework which should appeal to scholars and students in a variety of academic fields.--Mark S. Weiner, Rutgers School of Law, Newark

Photoshop Elements 11 All-in-One For Dummies
By J. Stalter
I've bought Dummies books several times over the years and usually enjoyed them, getting useable info easily.

My comments are made after working with the book for less than an hour. I am an amateur in using a computer which could be part of the problem.

This book would be more honest titled "Photoshop Elements 11 All-in-One For those who already are familiar with Photoshop." The author starts off with terms I don't recognize and it goes downhill from there. This is pretty much a technical manual not the usual easy reading type Dummies is noted for.

I will not buy any more Dummies where I see this authors name.

I'm going to have to get help from another source since this is just wasted paper for me.

Like many of the "...For Dummies" books, this goes step by step, and is heavily illustrated - ideal for someone feeling their way along with photographic image processing. That's why I bought it. Great for beginners moving up from basic editing programs.

Very Enjoyable Read!
By Melanie
Waiting for Spring is only the second novel I've read by Amanda Cabot (the first being Summer of Promise), but I can already tell I'm a fan of her work! Waiting for Spring was a very enjoyable read that kept me interested throughout.

I loved the characters in Waiting for Spring, and couldn't help feeling for Charlotte and all she had gone through. She seemed like a very courageous woman, in spite of her fears. I loved the scenes with Barrett and David. It was so cute the way they interacted.

While the identity of "The Baron" isn't kept a secret from the reader, there was still a little bit of suspense to Waiting for Spring, which I really liked.

I was never bored while reading Waiting for Spring, but I will say I was surprised by the length of the story. At one point, I thought things were nearing the end, and I couldn't believe there was still a good chunk of the book left to read.

Overall, I loved Waiting for Spring and am looking forward to reading book three of the Westward Winds series, With Autumn's Return, which should release spring of 2014.

I recommend Waiting for Spring if you enjoy historical romances. I don't think it is necessary to read Summer of Promise first.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

Straight to the Keeper Shelf
By Margaret C.
Waiting for Spring is a matchmakers dream to read! When I got my hands on this one, squeals were heard, yet that is often the case with a new novel from Amanda Cabot. When she started with her first series Texas Dreams she hit the ground running and has provided only riveting romantic reads for me every since including her most recent Christmas novella in Christmas Roses. Every time including in Waiting for Spring, the book grips me from the very first scene and keeps me captivated. A gorgeous dress graces the cover which appears to be fabulously typical for the Westward Winds series and brings you right into the character's life.

Coming in, I knew I would like it being from Amanda, but I was even so excellently surprised. In Summer of Promise I was not in love with the character of Charlotte (even though I of course love the name!) but hearing her thoughts come off the page in Waiting for Spring I am definitely rejuvenated for her and have thoroughly enjoyed her story. From the very first as the various characters are described and brought into the story each one could be the romantic interest or the way things go and Amanda describes character personalities so well in the way they seem to think and act that really has a reader invested in what will happen to each person. In this book, even the sideline characters bring a great interest into the curiosity of how it will all turn out.

Amanda Cabot is an author that goes straight to the keeper shelf. Pretty much you know when she is releasing a new book it is definitely worth every minute of the read.

*Thanks to Revell Books for providing a copy for review.*

Lovely inspirational romance with a twist of intrigue
By Cindy Keen Reynders
Waiting for Spring, the second book in the Westward Winds Series by Amanda Cabot, is a very entertaining read with interesting and well drawn characters. I haven't had a chance to read the first book in the series, but I intend to as soon as I can. I love that Waiting for Spring is set in Cheyenne, as this is my home town. Every day I drive past many of the places mentioned in the book, and I can see that a lot of historical research went into this work. It's great to read about your home town and see it depicted as it most likely was in yesteryear.

What a loving, hard-working woman Charlotte Harding, the heroine is! I found her dedication to her blind son admirable, and her determination to give him a good life brought a tear to my eye. Though Charlotte's in hiding and is secretive about her past, for a good reason, I found myself hoping she and Barrett Landry would find a way to be together in the end. I also found myself hoping Gwen, a secondary character, would find her own happy ending.

I loved the nuggets of inspiration sprinkled throughout this novel, as well as the Bible passages. These are good reminders to all of us that although life may become difficult, we've got to have faith and remain true to our convictions. I look forward to reading more books from this great author!

A deadly auction is about to take place as two scientists put their prototype for harnessing cold fusion on the market. Scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder in a secret Syrian location, the knowledge of how to harness cold fusion would give great and dangerous nuclear power to its owner. As Mack Bolan races to intercept the exchange, he discovers he's not the only one intent on crashing the bidding party. A group of Russians have hijacked the proceedings and disappeared with the scientists.

The Russians expect an even higher price for the brains behind the scientific breakthrough, and Bolan must track the ex-KGB kidnappers across the desert from Syria to Libya and stop them from trading their human merchandise. Access to technology is low, so the Executioner will have to resort to WWII desert warfare strategies to put these Russians out of business—permanently.

Bolan Is Hot On the Trail of Cold Fusion
By Lionel S. Taylor
Bolan must go deep behind enemy lines to rescue two scientists who have become pawns in an international power struggle over control of an almost limitless power source. This story starts off a little confusing but then jumps back to fill in the details of what is going on. What ensues is a cat and mouse game across the Middle East as the Executioner tries to track down kidnappers who seem to constantly be one step ahead of him. Not a bad story at all and the villains are fleshed out a little better than usual in this story.

There's just one problem with it.
By Jan Nylander
Cold Fusion was well written and exciting. I never lost interest. The only problem with it was the notion of cold fusion itself. As I
understand it, cold fusion is not possible.

The Salem Witch Trials Reader, by Frances Hill

Against the backdrop of a Puritan theocracy threatened by change, in a population terrified not only of eternal damnation but of the earthly dangers of Indian massacres and recurrent smallpox epidemics, a small group of girls denounces a black slave and others as worshipers of Satan. Within two years, twenty men and women are hanged or pressed to death and over a hundred others imprisoned and impoverished. In The Salem Witch Trials Reader, Frances Hill provides and astutely comments upon the actual documents from the trial--examinations of suspected witches, eyewitness accounts of "Satanic influence," as well as the testimony of those who retained their reason and defied the madness. Always drawing on firsthand documents, she illustrates the historical background to the witchhunt and shows how the trials have been represented, and sometimes distorted, by historians--and how they have fired the imaginations of poets, playwrights, and novelists. For those fascinated by the Salem witch trials, this is compelling reading and the sourcebook.

A Must for Salem Witch Trials Enthusiasts!!!
By A Customer
Finally, original texts! Those of us interested in the Salem Witch Trials must thank Ms. Hill for providing us with the opportunity, finally, to have access to many invaluable first-hand accounts of this most fascinating moment in history. Reading this extraordinary volume provides not only a political, religious, and historical context for the trials, but fills one with a real sense of the emotional response experienced by both victims and accusers. In modernizing spelling, Ms. Hill has rendered these texts a bit more readily comprehensible, yet she has changed neither the actual text nor its meaning. For students and enthusiasts of this subject alike, this is an absolute necessity!

Great to have all of this under one cover.
By dinska
This truly a great book on the subject of the Salem witch trials. First, it offers historical context presenting period works, and then it expands to sampling the works written on the event since, showing the fascination we hold for it.
The author begins with writings of the time, things that Salem residents would have come across in their own lives. Past that, she moves into the actual event, showing all sorts of personal accounts. Alongside these she offers brief biographies of the authors and certain named VIPs, which are helpful if you are reading on the subject for the first time.
One of the things that was impressed upon me while reading this was just how many time periods have been caught up by the trials. Immediately after they took place there was an effort to come to grips with what had happened. From then until now each era had their own take on the subject. Fiction seems to have followed a similar pattern. Not being a literary historian, I was surprised that Nathaniel Hawthorn's work on the subject was not the first fictional treatment! She offers works up to the present day, ending with the 1990's.
The only thing I would wish improved upon is that the commentary's typeface would be changed so that the eye can switch easily from the works shown and the author's thoughts.
It would be very hard for anyone to have copies of all the books and essays excerpted here. That there is knowledgeable commentary is a plus. I found it plainly compelling reading. If the Salem witch trials interest you this should be one of the books you own on the subject. It will be a great compliment to any conventional history of the event, which this book does not necessarily replace.

this book could not be bettered
By A Customer
This book will give anyone interested in the horror of the 1692 witchhunt, including those who loved Ms Hill's engrossing A DELUSION OF SATAN, a fascinating read through the exciting original documents. Indian raids, witchcraft, religious outrages and the miscarriages of justice that led to the terrible hangings are all revealed as if we were there. It's hard to imagine how this book could be bettered.

Simple Riches: That Second Chance, Book 3, by Mary Campisi

Sometimes we’re lucky enough to get that second chance – in life and in love. That Second Chance Series are stand-alone stories of strong women who battle heartache and loss with a courage and determination to find new paths and true love. What ties them together? A common theme: belief in the beauty of that second chance.

Simple Riches is Book Three of That Second Chance Series. It is also the prequel to Mary’s bestselling family saga, A Family Affair: Winter, Truth in Lies, Book Six.

If you enjoyed the small town sense of community and caring in A Family Affair (Truth in Lies Series) you’ll experience that same coziness in Simple Riches. There’s heartache, betrayal, forgiveness, and redemption, all wrapped up and waiting for you.

Alexandra “Alex” Chamberlain is a big city girl who knows nothing about close-knit families, sibling rivalry, or receiving an unsolicited opinion in the name of family. She’s been raised by an aunt and uncle who’ve provided her with a wealthy lifestyle and a fancy education, but have withheld what she craved most—love and acceptance. Her uncle has taught her to disregard everything but the bottom line on a balance sheet and she’ll do anything to earn his approval. She prides herself on excelling at her job which is selecting small towns to buy, flatten, and replace with luxury resorts. When Alex decides to investigate Restalline, Pennsylvania, as a potential site for the next resort, she enters the town under the guise of a researcher gathering information for a documentary. Her uncle wants this project badly, and she’s not going to disappointment him.

This town should be like all the others. Only it isn’t. This town has the Androviches, a family who values hard work, honesty, and doing the right thing. And this town has Nick Androvich, the town doctor with a battered heart who doesn’t quite trust her, but can’t deny the mutual attraction.

Oh, but it’s going to get messy when the truth about Alex’s real purpose for being in Restalline sneaks out...and the truth always does. But fear not, the town is not going to sit by quietly and watch this meant-to-be-together couple lose their happily ever after…

Review
"An emotional story of healing and homecoming, spiced with secrets, passion and revenge."
-Susan Wiggs, Bestselling Author, on Simple Riches

From the Author
I grew up in a small town in northwestern Pennsylvania, much like the one in Simple Riches. There were four of us kids, my two older brothers, me, and my younger sister--all of us born within 5 ½ years. There were no McDonalds in our town, no malls, no fancy movie theaters. I used to walk over a mile to school every day, (yes, I really did!) Time was filled with little things, everyday life; weeding the flower beds and garden by hand and getting snail guts under my nails, holding the flashlight while my brothers caught night crawlers, helping my mother bake bread or hang sheets on the line so they could 'catch the fresh air'. Huddling with my sister in bed on Easter Sunday before Mass and gorging on a milk chocolate baby doll, planting a maple tree-- my maple tree--with my father in our back yard, listening to my grandmother speak in broken English as she told stories of being a young girl in Italy and coming to America. Getting ready to go out on Saturday night and fighting over one shower and one hairdryer between the four of us...

Today, my brothers and sister and I live hundreds of miles away from that little town in Pennsylvania, but it is still part of us, it will always be part of us because that's where we learned the true meaning of family and friendship, and the importance of honoring your word.

And so, when I decided to write about a small town and its people with their traditions and values, I thought about life, as a child and as an adult, and this is the question that led to Simple Riches; What is real wealth? Is it a balanced stock portfolio and a seven-figure income? Or is it more elusive ... intangible...something perhaps that cannot be measured or identified or even...understood? Is real wealth that, which reaches out to us, touches our hearts, our souls, filling us yet leaving us longing for more? Is it a fall morning, crisp and clear, with the tip of frost covering green, ... a smile, full and honest, ... a tradition handed down, ... a string of memories planted with a maple tree...

From the Inside Flap
He spotted her the minute she walked through the door. Tall, graceful, blonde, reminding him of a present, one whose wrapping is so elegant, so exquisite, the receiver almost dares not open it, choosing instead to admire the outer trappings, delighting in the beauty of the presentation, all but forgetting the contents within.

Nick tried not to stare. He took a swig of beer, then another. His gaze shot back to the woman. She seemed to be with Chuck and Edna Lubovich, moving through the crowd of well-wishers at Uncle Frank's party, stopping when they stopped, smiling, holding out her hand. Who was she? A relative? One of Edna's sister's children? He doubted it. This one had too much class to be part of the Lubovich clan; he could see it in the way she held herself, head high, shoulders back, chin up.

Beautiful cover
By Amy Leemon
This is the 2nd book by Mary Campisi that I've read and she is an author I will definitely be looking for from now on.
The story is as straighforward as the characters. It's filled with good and bad and in-between. It's a town that if you were lucky, you grew up in and if you are even luckier, are still in.
Old fashioned values, love of family, support of friends - all of these are new concepts to Alexandra Chamberlain when she comes to Restalline, Pennsylvania. She comes under false pretenses. She pretends that she is researching the town for a documentary when she really is intending to persuade some residents to sell their property so her uncle can level it and build a resort for the wealthy.
But slowly she comes under the spell of the town and tries to change what has already been put in motion. It isn't going to be easy - in fact it may even be impossible.
It's a story you will enjoy. You may even find yourself looking for other books by this author. She's worth it.

Apple pie . . .star lit nights . . . butterflies . . .These are the simple riches that make the world go around.
Alexandra 'Alex' Chamberlain was orphaned at an early age.
Her Uncle and Aunt raised her, and she grew up craving the
attention of her guardians. She discovered that the key to
obtaining the attention she craved were through working with
her Uncle. Her job as a Scouter, allowed her to seek out
future building sites for luxury resorts. Unknowingly to her
prey, she would move into the very town that she had pin
pointed out to learn secrets that would almost guarantee she
was successful in her venture. Her latest project was located
in the small quaint town of Restalline, Pennsylvania. A widow
and her son was the only thing that stood in her way from
gaining their prized land. What was to be an easy conquest
was met with resistance and emotion that she had never
counted on feeling.
Dr. Nick Androvich had returned to his hometown of Restalline
with haunting memories and a small son to raise. He had lost
his wife in a Chicago inferno that he felt was partially his
fault. He was intent on trying to pick up the pieces and
rebuild his shattered life. He relished the fact that life
never seemed to change in his loveable home place - no matter
how many years you stayed away. He was determined to make a
new life for both himself and his son.
The forces that brought Nick and Alex together are the ones
that will surely tear one of them apart. Which one of these
strong individuals would win out and accept the change the
other one offers?
This makes the second Mary Campisi novel that I have had the
privilege of reading/reviewing. As in fine wine, her writing
style only gets better with age. This beautiful story will
have you longing to revisit your home place. Her smooth
compelling plot will leave other authors green with envy.
Such flawless writing is to be commended.
