Back In Action: An American Soldier's Story Of Courage, Faith And Fortitude, by David Rozelle

They put a price on his head. They did everything they could to disrupt his mission. Finally, when an anti-tank mine tore off his right foot, the warriors of jihad in Iraq thought they had neutralized one of their most resourceful, determined foes.

They were wrong.

Refusing to let his injury stop him, Captain David Rozelle roared back into action, returning to Iraq as commander of an armored cavalry troop. He became the first amputee in recent military history to resume a dangerous command on the same battlefield.

In Back in Action: An American Soldier¹s Story of Courage, Faith, and Fortitude, Rozelle tells the whole gripping story: from the day he had to tell his pregnant wife that he was going to war (Valentine’s Day 2003) and deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, to the fateful day four months later when a land mine tore off his right foot and beyond, through months of agonizing rehabilitation to his final triumphant recertification as "Fit for Duty."
Rozelle, who has been awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart, speaks with brisk frankness about his post-amputation battles and the gritty determination that saw him through. He recounts his inspiring battle through rehabilitation, as he learned to walk with a prosthetic foot and did his utmost to prove he still had the stuff to be a soldier: completing five sprint-distance triathlons, an Olympic-distance triathlon, the New York City Marathon, and skiing, snowboarding, and mountain climbing through Disabled Sports USA.

It’s an astonishing story of courage, determination, heroism, and bedrock patriotism. "Every now and again," says Rozelle, "I would get the standard, ‘That is horrible. How do you feel about the war?’" The fearless captain would respond: "How do you feel about your freedom? If you aren’t willing to die for it, then you aren’t American."

David Rozelle was willing to die for freedom, and he is still willing to put his life on the line for it, despite the injury he has already suffered. Back in Action is a stirring reminder of the commitment every American should have to the cause of freedom, if we hope to continue to enjoy that freedom. It’s an extraordinary and inspiring story of devotion to duty overcoming all obstacles.

Life on the line in Iraq - a story of triumphant recovery
By Craig Matteson
This is a book you will want to read in a single evening. Maybe two, at most. The life story that David Rozelle shares with us is remarkable not in its uniqueness, but in showing us how the qualities of tenacity, work, discipline, courage, and pulling together can make an ordinary life extraordinarily capable of overcoming debilitating setbacks.

Captain Rozelle's story reminds us that while we mourn the dead in any war, we should be even more vigilant in supporting the living who have paid the price of disabling injury on our behalf. We learn how careless and thoughtless we ordinary folks can be in fumbling both our awkward statements of support and encouragement and in our uncomfortable avoidances. We owe it to these fine young people to learn how to handle ourselves better and to give more of ourselves in their support.

The author skillfully shares with us how his life led him to the army and how he ended up where he did. He helps us understand the physical and political difficulties in working in Kuwait and Iraq. At the same time he is able to give us a more complete picture of why the Iraqis are grateful to us and why a minority still resist the change the Americans represent. There have been several fine books written by generals and about the war from a high level viewpoint. Captain Rozelle takes us down to the troop level and lets us see what a magnificent job our brave soldiers are doing in such tough circumstances.

The suddenness of his injury is a reminder to us all how arbitrary life can be and the permanent effects an instant can have. Captain Rozelle does not pull any punches in telling us about the pain he suffered and the difficulties he went through in recovery. He does not spare himself in sharing with us his difficulties with his pain medication as well as his doubts and fears for his future.

His wife, Kim, wrote one of the chapters and we get to learn about his injury from her point of view. It is a terrific chapter. She is very honest in telling us about her reactions to the news and how she interacted with her friends and family who tried to support her. Again, she is very open and doesn't spare herself in retelling this story.

We can all thrill to time when Captain Rozelle got his bearings and decided to not only get on with his life, but to run and ski and try to get back on active duty. He did all those things and used his own recovery to help other soldiers who had themselves suffered disabling injuries.

Oh, and the author had an interaction with both Senator John Kerry and President George W. Bush. I won't spoil what each said to him, but it is very telling about the core of each of those men.

Strongly Recommended.

Pride and Courage
By FrKurt Messick
The autobiographical account, "Back in Action : An American Soldier's Story of Courage, Faith and Fortitude" by Captain David Rozelle is an inspiring story of courage and commitment. An ROTC officer, Captain Rozelle became commander of an armored cavalry unit in Iraq, receiving his orders to ship out to the theater of operations on Valentine's Day, 2003. Telling his wife that he had been called to duty was a hard thing to do, but not so hard as her hearing the news that he had been injured. He had only been in Iraq for four months by the time of his injury, which was sufficient time for him to become a feared adversary formidable enough for the Iraqi resistance to target him specifically as a threat.

Rozelle's descriptive work is good writing, and puts the reader in the heart of the action throughout his time, particularly concentrating on his recovery. In an anti-tank mine explosion, Rozelle lost his right foot, while sustaining other lesser injuries. His recovery time was long and painful, but the real drive in the heart of Rozelle was not just to walk again, but to be able to serve in the Army again.

Rozelle writes about the various procedures and therapies, as well as the drive to keep up his spirits, both his personal resolve toward success as well as his patriotic spirit of wanting to be of service to his country. With help from agencies such as Disabled Sports USA (whose motto is, 'If I can do this, I can do anything') Rozelle rebounded from his injuries to compete in such events as triathalons and mountain climbing. He even skis with the prosthetic leg fashioned for him.

Rozelle writes that one of his primary motivations toward a full and complete recovery was to live his life to be an example to others, particularly toward others wounded in military action. "I tried to set an example and offer hope. That is what these guys needed most."

Rozelle won both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, and continues to demonstrate the kind of courage and commitment that these awards exemplify. Rozelle is the first amputee to be sent back into action in the battle zone where he sustained his first injuries; this is the stuff of heroes.

a true hero
By Michael Yao
Bought the book this past weekend and read it in one day. An amazing story from a true American hero. Whether you support the war or not, this book will challenge you. So much has been given by so few; for the good of us all. Next time you see a soldier on the street, thank them AND their family.

our son's favorite
By L. Nesbitt
We have at least 15 Berenstain Bears books, and this is one of our 5 year old son's favorites. It shows how much fun birthday parties can be, but also that we can get too carried away by them. There is one part where the cubs play "spin the bottle" which does seem odd, but Sister only ends up kissing Brother on the cheek...this part doesn't seem to be a problem for our son.

Lesson for children & parents
By A Customer
A lesson of modesty which is very well described! Children and parents will learn that big, sensational birthday party does not necessarily ends up with happiness!

our favorite
By J T Allen
This is our favorite Berenstain Bears book, a must for every child who has ever "wanted it all" for their special day. Sister turns six, and what starts out as a simple birthday celebration plan becomes an elaborate festival complete with too many goodies, ponies and merry-go-round, thanks to Papa. This is a bit much for Sister, who has only just turned six, after all! Parent everywhere will smile at the birthday meltdown and subsequent scenes, and children of all ages will relate to sister's ups and downs on her big day.

Eating Grass: The Making of the Pakistani Bomb, by Feroz Khan

The history of Pakistan's nuclear program is the history of Pakistan. Fascinated with the new nuclear science, the young nation's leaders launched a nuclear energy program in 1956 and consciously interwove nuclear developments into the broader narrative of Pakistani nationalism. Then, impelled first by the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan Wars, and more urgently by India's first nuclear weapon test in 1974, Pakistani senior officials tapped into the country's pool of young nuclear scientists and engineers and molded them into a motivated cadre committed to building the 'ultimate weapon.' The tenacity of this group and the central place of its mission in Pakistan's national identity allowed the program to outlast the perennial political crises of the next 20 years, culminating in the test of a nuclear device in 1998.

Written by a 30-year professional in the Pakistani Army who played a senior role formulating and advocating Pakistan's security policy on nuclear and conventional arms control, this book tells the compelling story of how and why Pakistan's government, scientists, and military, persevered in the face of a wide array of obstacles to acquire nuclear weapons. It lays out the conditions that sparked the shift from a peaceful quest to acquire nuclear energy into a full-fledged weapons program, details how the nuclear program was organized, reveals the role played by outside powers in nuclear decisions, and explains how Pakistani scientists overcome the many technical hurdles they encountered. Thanks to General Khan's unique insider perspective, it unveils and unravels the fascinating and turbulent interplay of personalities and organizations that took place and reveals how international opposition to the program only made it an even more significant issue of national resolve.

Review
"Feroz Hassan Khan's book Eating Grass: The Making of the Pakistani Bomb is a comprehensive description of Pakistan's campaign to develop its nuclear weapons . . . Eating Grass is in a class by itself because it is written by an author who served as director of arms control and disarmament affairs in the Strategic Plans Division of the Joint Services Headquarters of Pakistan . . . Khan brings to his book considerable experience not only as a scholar of the subject of nuclear nonproliferation but also as a practitioner of nuclear diplomacy."—Ehsan M. Ahrari, Mediterranean Quarterly

"Comprehensive, detailed, and written with military precision and objectivity, Eating Grass: The Making of the Pakistani Bomb is an elegantly crafted and engaging history of the Pakistani efforts to obtain the atomic bomb that will become a reference work in the study of Pakistan and its nation-defining relationship with the nuclear program."—Vladimir Rauta, Review of Politics

"Eating Grass will become the authoritative volume on Pakistan's nuclear trajectory, from its uncertain beginnings to Pakistan's present development of tactical nuclear weapons . . . [T]his is the best volume we have."—Shashank Joshi, RUSI Journal

"In this important and impressive new work, Khan traces the development of Pakistan's nuclear-weapons program from partition to the present . . . Khan succeeds admirably in sifting through published accounts and weaving in details and anecdotes from his numerous interviews with key participants."—Frank Klotz, The National Interest

"Feroz Khan, a retired Pakistan Army general who served as Director of the Strategic Plan Division, Pakistan's nuclear security apparatus, has written the first comprehensive insider account of the Pakistani nuclear weapons program . . . Framed as a story of indigenous triumph, Eating Grass nonetheless also serves as a history of the failure of non-proliferation regimes—or as a how-to guide for how to evade them."—Timothy Nunan, The Sunday Guardian
"Eating Grass: The Making of the Pakistani Bomb, uses primary source material and personal interviews to explain and analyze the genesis of Pakistan's nuclear program. Understanding Pakistan's nuclear development is not only important for Pakistan scholars but also for nuclear analysts more broadly. Nuclear scholars are working with an incredibly small sample of nine nuclear states, so gaining a robust understanding of each nation's path to the bomb is essential. General Khan discussed a wide range of issues as an introduction to his book's more comprehensive analysis."—Sarah Wiener, CSIS
"Khan provides a comprehensive history of Pakistan's nuclear program. . . . Khan explains the reasons behind Pakistan's dogged pursuit of nuclear deterrence, including why it was willing to pay any price to achieve nuclear capability. . . . Recommended."—A. Mazumdar, CHOICE
"Eating Grass fills a big gap in the scholarly literature. Feroz Khan's book about Pakistan's nuclear program takes its place beside the authoritative volumes on U.S., Soviet, Chinese, Indian, and Israeli nuclear histories. Going beyond the headlines, Khan provides unique insights into the political, technical and strategic issues behind the untold story of Pakistan's bomb. Essential reading for anyone interested in nuclear history, proliferation, or South Asian security."—Zachary S. Davis, Center for Global Security Research, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
"A tour de force—masterful, meticulously researched. Feroz Khan combines insights from Pakistani insiders and declassified U.S. sources to tell the most authoritative story of Pakistan's 50-year pursuit of the bomb and, with it, international respect."—Siegfried S Hecker, Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University, and Director Emeritus, Los Alamos National Laboratory
"Feroz Hassan Khan has written the seminal study of the creation, development, and expansion of the world's fastest growing nuclear weapons complex. His use of source material heretofore unexplored or otherwise unavailable—including dozens of exclusive interviews with the scientists, generals, diplomats, and politicians who guided Pakistan's nuclear bomb program—makes Eating Grass a must-read for national security scholars and practitioners alike."—Peter R. Lavoy, national security practitioner

"Drawing on primary and secondary sources, his own experiences, and numerous interviews with decision-makers and former scientists who were intimately involved in the program, Khan recapitulates Pakistan's nuclear journey. He analyzes key decisions by its leaders that shaped the trajectory of Pakistan's strategic capabilities and its foreign relations, bureaucratic disputes over the program, and competition between actors in the scientific community trying to put their individual stamp on the bomb."—Shehzad H. Qazi, World Affairs Journal

A much needed account of Pakistan's quest to acquire a nuclear deterrent
By GSTownBiz
Khan writes an objective analysis for Pakistan's reasons to acquire nuclear capability. He argues that suffering from national humiliation is often a trigger for a state's quest to acquire nuclear capability. For Israel, it was the holocaust. For China, it was suffering humiliation at the hands of Japan during World War II and the US in Korea after. For India, it was suffering defeat at the hands of the Chinese in 1962. In Pakistan's case, the dismemberment of the country in 1971 strengthened the resolve of the nation to "never again" suffer such humiliation. The book is laden with technical details that will prove useful for research. Largely, however, Khan's book is narrated in a manner that interweaves the history of Pakistan with the story of the bomb, and makes for an engaging read. Students and enthusiasts in the field of political science, international affairs and national security will truly enjoy this book, as will the layman. The book has the potential to change international outlook of Pakistan's nuclear program, which has been cast in a negative light by the international media. Khan gives due credit to Pakistan's scientific community, who were able to accomplish the development of a nuclear program in the face of sanctions and intense international scrutiny. Khan provides new material that was heretofore unavailable, a truly remarklable account put together especially in light of the fact there Pakistan does not have a "culture of declassification" (as the author puts it).

An excellent history of Pakistan's nuclear bomb project from a real insider
By Otho Bean
Much has been written about Pakistan's program to develop a nuclear bomb; most of it centered around AQ Khan and designed to either show he was a hero and the best scientist Pakistan has ever produced or that he was a villain and incompetent to boot. Feroz Khan (no relation that I am aware of) has framed that question in its proper proportion to the rest of the history of Pakistan's bomb work in this fascinating and well researched book. There is much new and very important in this work and I highly recommend it.

Eating Grass: Spare Nothing for the Bomb
By John Wm Schiffeler
Feroz Hassan Khan, a retired brigadier general in the Pakistani Army and currently on the faculty at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, has written an excellent and much needed account--under the imprimatur of the Stanford University Press--of the development of atomic power in Pakistan as a countermeasure to India's earlier pursuits in the atomic arena. His scholarship reflects a brilliant mind and balanced approach to appreciating and understanding this subject matter. It also serves to remind some of us of the futility of such one-upsmanship in the quest of atomic superiority. His findings are based on extensive interviews with many of the leading figures responsible for establishing and furthering this development, as is reflected by his many citations in the Notes. For those interested in international relations and its related fields, especially with respect to South Asia, this work should be regarded as required reading. It is uncommon to find someone with such an extensive background and first-hand knowledge of this subject matter as the author possesses.

Seized by Truth: Reading the Bible as Scripture, by Joel B. Green

We read the Bible and interpret Scripture in order to live in grace-filled relation to God's divine purpose.

When we approach the Bible as Scripture author, Joel Green, takes seriously the faith statement that the Bible is our Book; these scriptures are our Scripture. We are not reading someone else's mail--as though reading the Bible had to do foremost with recovering an ancient meaning intended for someone else and then translating its principles for use in our own lives. When we recall that we are the people of God to whom the Bible is addressed as Scripture, we realize that the fundamental transformation is not the transformation of an ancient message into a contemporary meaning, bur rather the transformation of our lives by means of God's Word. This means that reading the Bible as Scripture has less to do with what tools we bring to the task, however important these may be, and more to do with our own dispositions as we come to our engagement with Scripture. We come not so much to retrieve facts or to gain information, but to be formed and ultimately, transformed. Scripture does not present us with texts to be mastered but with a Word, God's Word, intent on mastering us, on shaping our lives.

An introduction to the Bible as Scripture
By J. Caldwell
"Seized by Truth", as one could gather from the subtitle, is an introduction to reading the Bible as Christian Scripture. In Green's view, this means reading the Bible with the assumption that it should offer formative guidance to the ecclesial community and to the individuals that comprise that community. This happens when we take seriously that the Bible is the church's text by calling for "interpretive practices oriented toward shaping and nurturing the faith and life of God's people" (79). This is not to say that only those voices from within the church (historic and contemporary) are worthy of our hearing, but rather, "locating our reading of Scripture within the ecclesial community immediately reconfigures the range of voices we allow to shape us" (77). Without diminishing the need to bring critical tools to the study of Scripture, Green contends that the primary tool that we bring to the interpretive task is a willingness to be formed by the text.

Reading the Bible as Scripture also demands a strong focus on the primary text. Green is concerned that, in biblical studies, undue impetus has been given to interpretive methods that purport to go behind the text (e.g., historical criticism) or in front of the text (e.g., ideological methods). This has left many with the impression that the interpretive task begins with discerning what the text meant and only then deciding what it means today. Such a divide is problematic, Green claims, because it fails to take seriously unity of the church under the guidance of the Spirit. In the final chapter, Green offers a illuminating discussion of the authority of the Bible. Here he challenges us to rethink the categories of `inerrancy' and `infallibility' that have arisen in recent history and, he claims, constitute their own form of reductionism.

"Seized by Truth" is at once very easy to read and very challenging. It would be appropriate to use in an introductory course on hermeneutics but would also be accessible to laity without any theological education. I am loath to separate the `practical' from the `theoretical,' but I should mention that one of the features that many readers will find helpful (i.e., `practical') about this book is the step-by-step guide to the interpretive practices that Green is arguing for (124-140). I recommend it.

Seized by Truth
By Chris Woznicki
Joel B. Green, Seized by Truth: Reading the Bible as Scripture. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2007.

There are numerous books on how to read the Bible, ranging from books which are devotional in nature to books that are scholarly. Usually the there is a gap between the type of readings that these books advocate for; devotional books usually emphasize that reading is for formation and scholarly books tend to emphasize reading for the sake of acquiring information. Joel Green however presents the reader with a way to read the Bible that is for the sake of formation yet is informed by biblical scholarship. In Seized by Truth: Reading the Bible as Scripture, Green argues that Christians must not simply read the biblical writings as texts but as Christian scripture. "To take biblical texts as Scripture has to do with the aim of Scripture" which is to "shape persons' identities so decisively as to transform them" (5). Throughout the book, he takes this notion that the aim of Scripture is formation, and provides the reader with lessons as to how they should read Scripture in light of its aim.

Green begins the book by asking what "what kind of book is the Bible?" He concludes that it is not like any other book; it is Scripture. To say that the Bible is Scripture is to say that it finds its origin, role, and aim in God's self-communicative purposes and that the people who receive Scripture are formed in light of God's self-communication. Although Scripture's aim is to form the reader, there are several barriers to reading Scripture for the sake of formation. For instance, there is a language gap between the text and reader, often the language of Scripture is ambiguous and culturally embedded thus it is difficult for the reader to understand let alone be shaped by scripture. However, perhaps the most significant barrier to being formed by Scripture is that sometimes readers have a wrong disposition to scripture. If the reader is not willing to be shaped and molded by Scripture, formation will likely never occur.

In the second chapter Green addresses the aims and assumptions that guide the reader's engagement with the text. One of the most important assumptions that readers have regarding the text is that the Scriptures speak not only to the original audiences but to people today as well. By examining this assumption, Green shows how this assumption helps the reader read for the sake of formation. He begins by looking at how the Old Testament speaks to readers in fresh ways even today. He also looks at how a converted mind is essential to reading the Bible as Scripture. Without conversion, that is allegiance and humility towards God, one cannot truly read for formation. Finally he looks at who the Bible is addressed to. Green suggests that we take the position of the Model Reader when it comes to reading the Bible. By using this notion, as it is articulated by Umberto Eco, he shows how readers today can be formed by a text written thousands of years ago.

In the third chapter Green looks at how readers who read for the sake of formation will approach the interpretation of the text. He argues that a reading of the Bible as Scripture must be ecclesially located. That is the reader must read within the context of God's people. The reader must be situated within a local church context as well as the context of the church as global and historical. Second, the reader must allow theology to inform her reading. She must be informed by the grand narrative of scripture, by the rule of faith, and by her theological tradition. Third, the reader must have a critical reading. That is the reader must come to the text open to new possibilities and perspectives regarding the significance and use of the text. Finally, a reading of the Bible as Scripture must necessarily involve the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit, transformation will not occur.

In the fourth chapter Green works through how the reader can interpret the text. He does this by examining three categories which have been used to classify methods of interpretation: behind the text, in the text, and in front of the text. He brings up difficulties with all three was of interpreting texts and concludes by saying that the best way forward is to take seriously "the concerns and emphases of all three, (but) priority belongs to one - the text itself" (140). Keeping this in mind he points out that there is no fixed formula for how to use these three methods, there is only a process for how to interpret, thus interpretation is not a science but an art. As an art, there are no right interpretations, only better and worse interpretations.

The final chapter deals with the authority of Scripture. He points out that there is crisis in understanding the function of Scripture. Some readers understand the function of Scripture as a bearer of propositional truths, when in reality its function is the formation of the reader. There is also a crisis in seeing the Bible as irrelevant, once again this crisis arises from a view of Scripture that does not prioritize formation. Finally there is a crisis in understanding the authority of Scripture. As readers begin to see that Scripture is the narrative of God's story, and begin to see themselves as a part of that story, they will come to realize that God is inviting the reader to be transformed to be better actors within that story. As they allow themselves to be transformed by Scripture, they will realize that the Bible's authority relies upon the one who invites us into his story.

In examining this book critically I would like to make two observations. First, this book should be commended for its originality. In the beginning he states that people often experience the reading of Scripture as a dry, boring, and uninspiring exercise; for some it even seems like a chore. It seems as though approaching the Bible with better interpretive skills or greater knowledge of the narrative and background could alleviate this problem. Yet this is rarely the case, it is often the case that the more one knows the more dry the text becomes. For this reason many Christians have avoided any scholarly discussions of the Bible; they are afraid that scholarship will hamper their experience of reading the Bible. This is precisely the point that Green's book is original, Green shows the reader that Biblical scholarship can and should help the reader's experience with the Bible come alive. By making use of philosophy, social science, and cognitive theory he shows the vital role that reading the Bible plays in spiritual formation. He also shows that having a theory of interpretation, in Green's case a theory which prioritizes the text but takes seriously the stuff in front of and behind the text, can help the reader get beyond themselves and read scripture in a way that forms them. Green's originality lies in the fact that he presents the reader with a fresh way to read for the sake of formation that is informed by scholarship.

Yet there are also shortcomings in this book. I have in mind certain points in which he is ambiguous with what he is trying to argue for. Green points out that most hermeneutical theories today argue that in order to understand the meaning of the Biblical text we must first come to understand the ancient world and what the text meant in the past and then translate those truths into language which is in line with contemporary thought and language of the modern world. This method assumes that we are not the audience; the people in the past were the audience. Yet, recently new models of interpretation have been proposed, ones in which the reader and the text together generate a meaning. Among these models for reading and understanding the text is reading as a Model Reader. Umberto Eco articulates this concept. Eco speaks of reading as a model reader "as the practice of those who are able to deal with texts in the act of interpreting in the same way as the author dealt with them in the act of writing" (57). By doing this, the reader is not making a pilgrimage into the past to understand the meaning back then, but is making herself at home in the strange world of the text (60). Green thinks reading as a model reader will help with formation, yet it is not clear how it is even possible to read as the model reader. How can a reader interpret the text in the same way the writer is writing the text? Just as in the first model of interpretation there is a linguistic gap, and therefore a gap in conceptual schemes. Secondly, it is impossible for anyone to understand what its like to think the thoughts of another person; so how is the reader supposed to interpret the text this way? Thus it seems as though it is impossible to read as a Model reader. Either this notion is incoherent or there is something missing in Green's argument for making use of the Model Reader.

Overall, the positives outweigh the negatives; Seized by Truth: Reading the Bible as Scripture is a worthwhile read. It provides a great introduction as to what it would look like to read the Bible for spiritual formation while making use of good biblical scholarship.

Written for the church, but maybe better for the scholar.
By Amanda
I really liked the book. I didn't agree with all aspects, but the author presented a strong argument as to how Scripture should be read. My concern is that the author wants more biblical study to happen among "common church folk," yet this book was written as though an academic should be reading it. In all, I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to do a better job of studying and understanding Scripture.

Ever since local developer Fred Stanton and his wife, Mimi, built five modular homes next door to Lucy Stone's farmhouse, life just hasn't been the same. With Mimi complaining about everything from the state of Lucy's lawn to another neighbor's lovable dog, quaint Tinker's Cove, Maine, is now entangled in cul-de-sac politics and backstabbing. And when Mimi doesn't show up for her shift at The Hat and Mitten Fund bake sale, the scent of burnt sugar leads Lucy to a shocking discovery: Mimi, face down on her kitchen floor--with a knife in her back.

While the police start their investigation, Lucy gets busy writing up the murder for the local Pennysaver--and following a few leads of her own. Lucy knows the women in her neighborhood didn't like Mimi, but they certainly didn't want her dead. . .right?

From Publishers Weekly
In Meier's disjointed 13th Lucy Stone mystery (after 2005's New Year's Eve Murder), the Tinker's Cove, Maine, newspaper reporter has a whole subdivision of peculiar neighbors around her once peaceful farmhouse, and anonymous letters are arriving at her office. The unknown penman alleges that the new football coach, Buck Burkhart, is condoning unsavory behavior by the high school's senior football players toward the junior players and the cheerleaders, one of whom is Lucy's daughter, Sara. But no one is talking or listening, as the coach launches his lackluster team into a victorious season. Then Lucy finds Burkhart's neighbor, one of her volunteer bakers, knifed to death in her kitchen. And what about the homeless man? The philandering veterinarian? The victim's bad-tempered husband? The author makes only a halfhearted effort to connect all the dots, while the one big break in the murders comes, unpleasantly and literally, through Lucy's dog, Libby. (Dec.)

Deadly Bake Sale
By Dawn Dowdle
Lucy Stone's neighborhood has changed. Instead of her nice quiet street, now there's a new subdivision nearby with a loud motorcycle riding teenager.

Lucy and her friends, Sue, Pam, and Rachel begin working on the Hat and Mitten fund. They decide a bake sale, like they used to hold, would be a great fundraiser. Lucy volunteers to call everyone to get donations of baked goods. Unfortunately she finds that she hasn't kept up with everyone and they're all busy doing something else and unable to bake anything.

So they decide to include the new neighbors in the subdivision to help with the bake sale. New neighbor Chris Cashman decides to take over. Lucy's fine with letting her take over, but it puts a real strain on her friendship with Sue as she'd always been the leader before. Chris decides they should make low-carb snacks, sell bottled water, and even make some dog treats. They're going to have a taste test to decide which recipes are the best for the sale.

The date of the taste test Mimi Stanton doesn't show up. Lucy is dispatched to check on her and find out if she needs any help. Unfortunately Lucy finds Mimi in her kitchen with a large knife in her chest.

Who could have killed her and why? Lucy sets out to figure out who did it since she doesn't think the person the police arrested is the killer.

I love this series. Lucy is such a fun character. She's very involved with her kids, friends, and community. Her involvement gives her credibility in investigating, plus it sets up the secondary story line. I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it.

Baking Can Kill You
By J.E. Stephens
This installment in the Lucy Stone series was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tinker's Cove is growing and new subdivisions and people are arriving.

The hat and mitten fund needs money. Lucy, Pam, Sue, and Rachel decide to have a bake sale. This was an interesting part of the book. It was typical how things change in communities and "new blood" should be brought in to help as often as possible.

These new people bring new situations to Tinker's Cove including murder. The author does an excellent job with this book. She weaves a story about teen issues and coping with home and career into her usual mystery. You will enjoy this book.

Loved it!
By Cozy Reader
I'm a huge Lucy Stone fan, however, the last couple of books in this series, IMO, haven't been as good as some of the others...until now.

Lucy Stone is back, and this book is a great addition to the series. It's well-written...there's a lot of red-herrings, some nicely placed clues, and the killer is introduced early in the book. As a mystery lover, you can't ask for much more.

This time out, Lucy has new neighbors, and one who is quite the little troublemaker. Early on, she is found dead, and Lucy investigates the murder, and eventually discovers who the murderer is.

BAKE SALE MURDER is a great addition to this series. I loved the addition of the new characters, and I hope they will appear in the next Lucy Stone Mystery. I also loved the recipes that are included at the back of the book.

Honestly, I'd have given this book 10 stars if it were an option.

Logan Quinn stared down the long, tree-lined driveway. He'd expected Willimston Farm would be upmarket, but he hadn't expected a feckin' estate. He turned the campervan off the main road and felt a sense of unease come over him.

When he'd made plans to stop along his weeklong route to Perth, all Logan had wanted was a spare stable, fresh water and a place to park. His old mate Ed Perkins had been working as a stable manager at Willimston for the past few years and had offered a place to overnight. Logan wondered how Ed's boss man might feel about the raggedy campervan and trailer ruining the perfectly groomed landscape.

If the sprawling house didn't give visitors a clue to the wealth of the owners, the outbuildings did. The low-slung buildings were painted white with green doors and shingles, a clear indication of the bottomless bank account that funded the place. Logan couldn't help but think of his own ranch on the fringes of the outback, the ramshackle house, the rough stables.

He'd worked for years to put together the cash needed to buy his own operation, sometimes juggling his job as an investment banker with one or two other jobs. And though the ranch was far from perfect, it was the first home he'd ever known.

After a childhood spent watching his father bounce from place to place, sheep station to cattle ranch, all the family's belongings contained in the back of a pickup truck, Logan needed a place to put down roots.

Every time he drove up the dusty road and saw the weathered stable and tiny house, he felt a measure of pride. He was building something for the future. And maybe someday, he'd have a family and they'd know a real home, a place where they could feel safe and secure.

A kid couldn't help but feel that way on Willimston Farm, he thought to himself. "Someday, my place will look like this," he murmured. Logan chuckled to himself. "Yeah, right. And someday, pigs will fly."

He slowly pulled the campervan to a stop and turned off the ignition. They'd been on the road for eight hours. It was time for the both of them to stretch their legs. He watched as a tall, lanky figure approached, then recognized his old friend Ed beneath the brim of the faded hat.

Logan stepped out of the camper and pulled off his sunglasses. "Ed! Hey, mate. Good to see you."

Ed yanked off his leather gloves and shook Logan's hand. "Logan Quinn. How was your drive?"

"Long. It feels good to stand instead of sit." He glanced around. "This is quite the place. You landed yourself a nice spot."

"It's good. The owner isn't around much. He has a mansion in Brisbane, too. But when he is here, he's a decent chap. Simon Grant. He's big in energy. Appreciates fine horses, too. So, who's watching your place while you're on the road?"

"I've got Billy Brantley working for me. Remember him? He worked with us that summer out on the Weaver ranch."

"He's a good guy. Hard worker." Ed nodded in the direction of the trailer. "Enough of this chatter. Are you going to show me?"

"Sure. Let's get her out." Logan walked to the back of the trailer, dropped the ramp and opened the doors. He smoothed his hand over the flank of the filly as he moved to take her halter.

"Come on, darlin'," he murmured. "Let's get you out of this trailer and into a paddock. You need some exercise." The filly slowly backed down the ramp and, when all four hooves were on firm ground, Logan circled her around Ed, letting him observe the horse.

He'd never been more proud of something that he'd accomplished as he had been of breeding and raising Tally. And though he knew not to get too attached to one of his horses, Logan was forced to admit that he loved everything about the pretty filly.

"Jaysus, Logan, she's a beauty." Ed stepped forward and examined the filly with a keen eye. He ran his palms over her, peered into her eyes and patted her neck. "You say she's sold?"

"Why? Do you want to buy her?"

"Hell, I'd be crazy not to show her to my boss. He's always looking for new stock."

Logan shrugged. "Yeah, she's sold. To a guy over in Perth. He's got a nice breeding operation."

"No. How much?"

Logan told him the price and Ed shrugged. "It's a fair price. I probably could have gotten you more. I would have liked to breed her with a stallion we have. They would have made some beautiful babies together." He paused. "Why didn't you keep her for yourself?"

A sliver of regret shot through him at the question. "I would have loved to. But I need the money."

"Things are tough?"

Logan chuckled. "Define tough.''''

"Why didn't you give me a call? I could have helped you out."

"You're helping me out now. Letting me stay here for the night. Now, do you have a paddock for my lady? I think she could use a good run."

"Come on, then. I saved the best for you."

They walked toward one of the low barns and when they reached the paddock, Ed opened the gate. Logan rubbed the filly's neck then sent her inside. She trotted around the perimeter, her ears up, her nostrils sniffing the air.

"What's her name?"

"I call her Tally," he said. "Her official name is Quinn's Tally-Ho Wallaroo. But maybe the new owners will give her a different name."

"She is a beauty."

Logan nodded. "Yeah. She's the first colt born on the farm, the first I raised from a baby. Hell, I feel like she's my kid and I'm sending her off into the world."

Ed patted him on the shoulder. "I expect letting the first one go is always the hardest. I've set up a stall in this barn here," he said, pointing over his shoulder. "You can pull your campervan around to the back. Just inside the door there's a loo and a shower."

"Thanks," he said.

"Have you had dinner yet?"

"Yeah. I picked up something along the way. Once I have Tally bedded down, I'm going to turn in, too. I'm knackered."

"Well, I'm up at sunrise. I'll bring you some breakfast before you leave."

Logan nodded. "Thanks. For everything. I really appreciate it."

"No worries," Ed said.

As Ed walked back to the stable, Logan turned his gaze out to the chestnut filly in the paddock. He'd always thought that Tally would be the center of his breeding program at the farm. He'd never imagined that he'd have to give her up. Just the thought of turning her over into someone else's care caused an ache deep in his gut. But horse breeding was like roulette. Sometimes you hit the jackpot and other times you walked away with nothing.

He braced his arms on the top of the gate and rested his chin on his hands. He'd had a choice. Keep the horse or keep the ranch. Without the filly, the ranch would survive. Without the ranch, he had no place to keep his horses.

Hell, maybe another filly like Tally would come along. Though her sire and dam had produced two males in the past two years, the odds were good that he was due a filly. But what were the chances that she'd be as perfect as Tally? He'd hate to think that his one-in-a-million horse had come at a time when he couldn't keep her for himself.

A quiet curse slipped from his lips. This trip wouldn't be any easier if he continued to drown in sentimentality.

"Nice horse."

The sound of her voice startled him. Logan turned to find a woman standing beside him on the lowest rail of the gate. The sun was behind her and he had a hard time making out her features, so he stepped back from the gate and pulled down his sunglasses.

The beauty of her profile, outlined by the setting sun, hit him like a ton of bricks. Flaxen hair gleamed in the golden light, the strands falling around her face in delicate curls. She looked as if she'd just crawled out of bed.

Her eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses. She wore a loose-fitting T-shirt and the bottoms to a hot-pink bikini that barely covered her backside. The soft curves of her breasts were outlined by the thin cotton, and he could almost imagine the body beneath the shirt. His gaze drifted back up to her face and he took in her lush lips.

A tiny smile twitched at the corners of that sensuous mouth. "What's next? Are you going to want to check my teeth? Maybe run your hands over my withers? I can take a turn around the paddock if you like."

He hadn't realized his stare was so obvious. He turned away and fixed his gaze on Tally. "You—you startled me."

"Good," she said. "I always like making a memorable first impression."

He laughed softly. She was teasing him and wasn't trying to hide it. But to what end? "Well done, then," he said. "I'm impressed." Logan glanced over at her. "Who are you?"

She held out her hand. "Lucinda Grant. My father owns this place."

He took her hand and gave it a quick shake. Her fingers were long and slender and tipped with shiny red polish. His mind flashed an image of those hands, skimming over his naked body, touching him in places he hadn't been touched for a while. Logan swallowed hard. Yeah, right. No chance a pretty little rich girl was going to waste her time on guy without a penny in his pocket.

"Nice to meet you, Miss Grant," Logan said.

"Oh, please. You stared at my arse. I think we're beyond Miss Grant. You can call me Sunny."

"I thought your name was Lucinda."

"It is, but everyone calls me Sunny. With a u. Actually, it really should be an o. My father always wanted a boy so he called me Sonny with an o until I was five. My mother changed it to Sunny with a u."

"It's nice to meet you, Sunny with a u."

She pushed her sunglasses onto the top of her head and turned her green-eyed gaze his way. "It's usually customary for you to tell me your name. You really do have the worst manners."

"Are you always such a smart-ass?" he asked, starting to enjoy the little game they were playing.

That brought a laugh. "I developed the talent in my teenage years and have perfected it since then. It's one of my best qualities."

He saw the glint in her gaze and Logan shook his head. He'd known girls like her, girls who weren't afraid to push the boundaries, girls who would say anything that came into their heads just to get a reaction. He usually made it a point to stay away from that type. They were impossible to figure out.

But there was something about Sunny, something more than just a quick wit and a sharp tongue. He saw something more…vulnerable behind that bold facade. He could see it in those eyes, those incredibly beautiful green eyes.

Logan rubbed his hand on his faded jeans before holding it out to her. "Logan Quinn."

She stared down at his hand for a long moment and Logan wondered if she didn't want to touch him. But then, she reached out and ran her finger along the length of his forearm. The feel of her nail scraping his skin sent a shiver through his body. She glanced up at him and smiled coyly. "You have nice hands, Logan Quinn." Her gaze turned toward the filly, who was now watching them both with a suspicious eye. "Is she yours?"

"For now," Logan said.

With that, she crawled over the gate and dropped down on the other side, her bare feet causing a soft thud in the dirt. As she walked toward Tally, Sunny turned back to him. "Come on," she said. "I want to hear what you have to say about her."

Logan followed her over the gate and hurried to catch up. As he walked beside her, he risked a glance at her face again. God, she was the prettiest thing he'd ever seen. And the oddest, as well. She didn't seem to be bothered by the fact that she was wandering around in a T-shirt that was just thin enough to reveal what was underneath. Maybe she'd spent the day sunbathing…topless…. He swallowed hard as a vivid image flashed in his mind.

When they got within ten feet of the filly, Sunny stopped and held out her hand. "What's her name?"

"Tally," he said.

"Hey, there, Tally," she murmured.

Logan reached in his jacket pocket and pulled out a biscuit, then handed it to her. "She likes these."

"Anzac biscuits? Me, too." She took a bite from the biscuit, then held the treat out to Tally. The horse immediately walked over and snatched the biscuit from Sunny's fingers.

Gently, she grabbed her halter and led the horse in a wide circle. Logan watched Sunny, his attention completely captivated by her long, slender legs and her lithe body. He felt a current of desire skitter through him and he drew a long breath.

Sunny carefully examined the horse, smoothing her palms over Tally, slowly taking in her conformation. And when she was finished, she motioned him over.

"Give me a knee up," she said.

"You're going to ride her?"

"Why not?"

Logan linked his fingers together and she slipped her knee into the cradle. He boosted her up and Sunny gracefully straddled the horse. Tangling her fingers in Tally's mane, she gave the filly a gentle nudge, and Tally moved forward.

The sight of them both, a beautiful woman and an equally beautiful horse, was enough to take Logan's breath away. His pulse quickened and he found himself searching for his next breath. As she urged Tally into a gallop, he groaned, trying to keep his mind off the images running around in his head.

Just okay
By Ekaterin
I found this book to be just okay. While the characters were somewhat interesting in background, they didn't seem to be all that interesting together. It seemed to be a book all about sex, and yet, the sex scenes for the most part weren't written with any spark. It was a book I could easily lay down and not come back to for several days. There was no pull--no storyline I couldn't wait to get lost in. The ending seemed too easy. It was just okay.

The Mighty Quinns: Logan
By Elizabeth J. Caruso
I really enjoyed this heartwarming read, even the second time around. I am still reading about the other Quinns and enjoying every one. These Irishmen are so romantic and loving.

Light, Fun Adventure
By Luv 2 Read
I really enjoyed this story! I liked the setting, the characters, the conflicts, everything. It was a very enjoyable story from cover to cover. While I've read Blazes before, they're been rather fewer and far between than I might have liked, so potential readers should understand that as they read this review. I picked up this one and got sucked into the story immediately. I enjoyed the banter between the characters, the setting, the very contemporary-ness of the story and the characters' actions, and the heroine's willingness to go after what she wants. The story was light, not fluffy, but not dark or really deeply emotional or very suspenseful, and that was nice. It was a good, honest, contemporary romance story. The opening and closing and some small elements represented the series nature of the story, but they were nice aspects and didn't interrupt the romance. (I haven't read any other Mighty Quinns stories, so that was a new, neat, introduction to the series for me.) I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!
