Alternative Theories of Competition: Challenges to the Orthodoxy (Routledge Advances in Heterodox Economics)From Routledge

The history of policymaking has been dominated by two rival assumptions about markets. Those who have advocated Keynesian-type policies have generally based their arguments on the claim that markets are imperfectly competitive. On the other hand laissez faire advocates have argued the opposite by claiming that in fact free market policies will eliminate "market imperfections" and reinvigorate perfect competition. The goal of this book is to enter into this important debate by raising critical questions about the nature of market competition.

Drawing on the insights of the classical political economists, Schumpeter, Hayek, the Oxford Economists’ Research Group (OERG) and others, the authors in this book challenge this perfect versus imperfect competition dichotomy in both theoretical and empirical terms. There are important differences between the theoretical perspectives of several authors in the broad alternative theoretical tradition defined by this book; nevertheless, a unifying theme throughout this volume is that competition is conceptualized as a dynamic disequilibrium process rather than the static equilibrium state of conventional theory. For almost all the others the growth of firm is consistent with a heightened degree of competitiveness, as both Marx and Schumpeter emphasized, and not a lowered one as in the conventional 'monopoly capital' view.

An antidote against neoclassical perfect competition
By Hendrik Bright
This book contains the best and the worst. All articles, by heterodox economists, give alternative theories to the mainstream nonsense of neoclassical economics. As most people - except economists - know, perfect competition is defined by neoclassical economists as a condition in which consumers and producers are price-takers. Everybody takes the price as defined by an auctioneer. Thus, perfect competition is absence of competition. Or an economy in which some central state defines the prices - which looks like communism!
Some very good contribution, like those from Weeks, Moudud and Metcalfe give an account of what competition is in reality. Others are no better than neoclassical theory, like those from Lazonick on his theory of the innovative enterprise or the contribution on Sraffa. Apart from those theoretical contribution, there are some case studies, that don't leave a lasting impression.
Still, the book is a must for all those who want to model the economy like it is in reality instead of finding a mathematical treatment that defies every description of reality, but is, as economists call it, internally consistent and mathematically correct.

Rites of Peace: The Fall of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna, by Adam Zamoyski

Following on from his epic ‘1812: Napoleon's Fatal March on Moscow’, bestselling author Adam Zamoyski has written the dramatic story of the Congress of Vienna.

In the wake of his disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, Napoleon's imperious grip on Europe began to weaken, raising the question of how the Continent was to be reconstructed after his defeat. There were many who dreamed of a peace to end all wars, in which the interests of peoples as well as those of rulers would be taken into account. But what followed was an unseemly and at times brutal scramble for territory by the most powerful states, in which countries were traded as if they had been private and their inhabitants counted like cattle.

The results, fixed at the Congress of Vienna in 1815, not only laid the foundations of the European world we know; it put in place a social order and a security system that lie at the root of many of the problems which dog the world today. Although the defining moments took place in Vienna, and the principle players included Tsar Alexander I of Russia, the Austrian Chancellor Metternich, the Duke of Wellington and the French master of diplomacy Talleyrand, as well as Napoleon himself, the accepted view of the gathering of statesmen reordering the Continent in elegant salons is a false one. Many of the crucial questions were decided on the battlefield or in squalid roadside cottages amid the vagaries of war. And the proceedings in Vienna itself were not as decorous as is usually represented.

Drawing on a wide range of first-hand sources in six languages, which include not only official documents, private letters, diaries and first-hand accounts, but also the reports of police spies and informers, Adam Zamoyski gets below the thin veneer of courtliness and reveals that the new Europe was forged by men in thrall to fear, greed and lust, in an atmosphere of moral depravity in which sexual favours were traded as readily as provinces and the 'souls' who inhabited them. He has created a chilling account, full of menace as well as frivolity.

From Booklist
This sequel to Zamoyski's fine Moscow 1812 (2004) shifts from military to diplomatic affairs surrounding the defeat of Napoleonic France and the disposal of its empire. Zamoyski narrates their course from 1813, when Russia's Alexander I decided to continue the war rather than settle with Napoleon, to 1815 and the latter's final Waterloo. The enigmatic personality of Alexander, a mystic, a self-regarding liberal, and a maladroit negotiator, joins Zamoyski's well-drawn portraits of the czar's chief interlocutors: Austria's Metternich, Prussia's Hardenberg, and Britain's Castlereagh. The intimacy of this cavalcade, which followed the allied armies into France, adjourned to London for a fête, and got down to brass tacks in the landmark Congress of Vienna, cues Zamoyski for the atmospheric details of travel, fashion, dances, and assignations. Zamoyski more centrally attends to the great power fundamentals of redrawing Europe's map as they played out in têtes-à-têtes among the principals and with France's crafty cynic Talleyrand. Underscoring the influence of personality on history, Zamoyski's fast-moving chronicle will enthrall the diplomacy audience. Taylor, Gilbert

The End of the Napoleonic Era
By P.K. Ryan
Adam Zamoyski's `Rites of Peace' is a thorough examination of the fall of Napoleon's empire and the subsequent reconstruction of Europe by the victorious allied powers of Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia. The Congress of Vienna, as this delegation was dubbed, was a watershed moment in European history, says Zamoyski, and one that has been largely neglected by historians ever since. Replete with extravagant soirées, hunting trips, duels, and scandalous sexual liaisons, this eight-month long negotiation served as a meeting ground for a virtual who's who of European nobility. Most prominent and influential were Talleyrand, Metternich, Tsar Alexander, Frederick William III, Castlereagh, Wellington, Humboldt, and an array of monarchs, princes, and aristocrats that are too numerous to name. Ostensibly, the goal was to bring stability and justice to the entire continent, and to a certain degree this was successful. But inevitably, all parties had their own agenda and thus Zamoyski's story is one full of intrigue and political maneuvering. The results were mixed, but the effects of the Congress of Vienna would impact the whole of Europe for some time to come.

First, I have to give credit where credit is due. Zamoyski's bibliography is huge and he clearly has done a massive amount of research for this book. This is definitely one of the most thorough and detailed histories that I have read. The negative side of this is that it is a bit too detailed, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed reading about all the debauchery and scandalous escapades, but Zamoyski tends to wander off into inane details that only serve to temporarily bore the reader. With that said, Zamoyski nicely utilizes many original sources, such as personal letters from Metternich to his many lovers, which successfully convey how the principal actors viewed their mission, as well as their fellow delegates. I definitely finished the book with a good feeling for the personalities and intentions of all those involved. Overall, except for a bit too much fluff, I would say this is definitely a groundbreaking and worthwhile read that shouldn't be missed. Four stars.

This is an exciting well researched history
By James V. Maclean
One of the most neglected and least understood periods of the early 19th Century was the peace settlement that ending the Napoleonic wars, the Congress of Vienna. Over the years there have been few books in English on the Congress of Vienna; the most notable was The Congress of Vienna a Study in Allied Unity 1812-1822, by Harold Nicolson, a solid but rather dry work on the subject. Rites of Peace by Adam Zamoyski, is a fast pace, well written book on this fascinating topic.
So much of what we thought we knew about the congress seems to be incorrect, Alexander l takes on the same characteristic of megalomania that Napoleon suffered from between 1811-1814. Metternich, is portrayed as being far more interested in his love life then fate of Europe and so forth. A great book on a difficult and confusing topic.

Highly researched and finely written
By John E. Drury
Zamoyski carefully marshals his facts through the body of the book saving his opinions and historical observations until the fascinating final chapter. While the detail is tedious at times [love affairs, table settings and womens' dressing gowns), the book shines with scholarship and detail. Talleyrand fascinates in his brilliance, durability and negotiating finesse representing la belle France' for its role as convict and heavy. Castlereagh also shines until the end of the Congress and then to read about his final tragic end saddens. The focus tho is really on Metternich and Alexander of Russia both who come off as fully alive characters in a stirring drama of diplomacy occurring two hundred years ago. A worthy and informative read.

...the best of the best.

About the Author
Jeffrey P. Schaffer made his first backpacking trip in a 1962 traverse of the Grand Canyon, at age 19. The following year the climbing frenzy seized him, which lasted until about 1972, some 200 roped ascents later. In that year he began working on his first book for Wilderness Press, The Pacific Crest Trail. Between then and the late 1980s, he was the sole or principal author of 12 guidebooks, and had mapped about 4000 miles of trail for his books and 15' topographic maps. Wilderness Press books authored or coauthored by Jeff include Hiker's Guide to the High Sierra: Yosemite, The Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California, The Pacific Crest Trail: Northern California, The Pacific Crest Trail, Vol. 2: Oregon and Washington, Yosemite National Park, Desolation Wilderness and the South Lake Tahoe Basin, The Tahoe Sierra, and The Geomorphic Evolution of the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Landscape.

Poorly updated edition of excellent book
By Michael R. Jones
The earlier editions of this book were one of the best mapping job ever to be found in a trail guide for the West. However, this new edition seems not to have been field-checked. In my neck of the woods (Lassen National Forest) re-routes made a few years ago are left out of the new edition. Specifically, the re-route in Chips Creek is missing. Also, the new view point on Hat Creek Rim is missing, although the old dirt trail was converted to a paved sidewalk for 100 yards. New 1:24,000 maps have been published by the USGS, but Wilderness Press still uses the old 1:62,000 maps in Chips Creek and other places. The earlier editions were nearly flawless, but this effort is Wilderness Press resting on its laurels and re-issuing old material with a new cover.

A good guide, but needs a few more data points
By Timecheck
We've used this guide for the entire Northern California section, and haven't gotten lost. The only problem is that some of the jeep roads mentioned in the guide are now invisible, at least to our aging eyes, and also, some of the data points indicate zero elevation change, when there might be a 1000 ft up or down between the points. Add a few more data points, please.

The Best...
By Allan Stellar
This is the book I use to plan my yearly trips on the Pacific Crest Trail. The mileage reports are good. But mostly I like to sit by the wood stove, in the winter (enduring the dreadful northern California rain--with this book in hand; I sit and look forward to hitting the trail. Planning. Dreaming. Waiting for the PCT to rejuvenate me. And perhaps that is the best use of this book: dreaming and planning to hit the trail.

After what seemed like a lifetime of bad days, Ali Silver couldn't wait to share a carefree afternoon with her son at the city picnic. Sunshine washed through the valley, giving a glow to the rivers and casting shadows out of the sharp mountain canyons to the west. With the pickup's windows rolled down, the air drifted in, spiced with alfalfa and silver sage. Fields of bucking hay splashed across the landscape, juxtaposed with the occasional lone apple tree—relics leftover from once substantial orchards.

Ali drove with one hand on the wheel, the other cocked in the open window. "Hang on to that. We don't want to spill it before the soldiers get to taste it."

Her son, Chance, hugged the bowl on his lap. "I know. This is the special potato salad. The one you only make for special people."

"Like you." She winked at him.

After waiting in a line of traffic to enter the park, Ali maneuvered her beast of a truck into one of the last available spots. She took the potato salad from Chance, and they ambled toward the crowd near the food tables. A couple local firefighters manned the grills. They waved. The smell of sizzling brats tickled her nose.

Hannah, a shop owner in town, signaled to Ali. "Isn't this just the nicest thing? I do believe the Hamilton Civic Club pulled out all the stops to honor these troops."

Ali balanced the bowl against her hip. "Having a picnic to honor the local servicemen who have returned this year was a great idea. I'm glad the town is doing something. And Chance loves anything to do with the army, so he's tickled to meet them."

Hannah clasped her hands together. "Oh, yes. I like them teaching the young people to support the troops."

Chance yanked on Ali's arm.

Hannah chuckled. "That boy's eager!"

Messing up his hair, Ali smiled down at her son. "Go on and find Aunt Kate and see if you can snag an empty table for us."

Without waiting to hear more, Chance took off running. Ali's heart squeezed. He might mirror her brown-sugar-like freckles, but the thick maple-colored hair that stuck up on the side when he woke in the morning, his square jaw, the angular nose and intense pale blue eyes—all of that belonged to his father. Chance looked just like…

Ali shook her head. She did not want to think about him. Not today. Not ever.

Instead she chose to weave through groups of mingling neighbors, greeting them with a nod since her hands were full. She located an empty place for the potato salad on a table already loaded with deviled eggs, baked beans and desserts. Satisfied that the food situation was under control, Ali snatched a gooey-looking brownie and raised it to her lips.

"Hiya, Ali."

The voice from her past rocketed through her with the force of a kick drum. The brownie flew out of her hand, leaving a powdered-sugar trail down her shirt on its way to the hard dirt. She spun around.

Jericho Freed.

All six feet of him, clad in jeans and a fitted gray-striped button-down. His bold, masculine eyebrows rose as he surveyed her with look-me-in-the-eyes-if-you-dare blues. He wore a straw cowboy hat with unruly hair poking out, and a five o'clock shadow outlined his firm jaw. More than eight years later, and the man still made her mouth go dry.

It frustrated her that after everything, he still had that power.

So she did the only rational thing she could think to do.

Flee.

In a fluid movement, Ali sidestepped him and took off sprinting at a breakneck clip. Her hat flew off. He yelled out her name.

And just like in the past, his voice poured sweet and velvety, like chocolate over each syllable. Ali's nails dug into her palms. She didn't want to hear him. She never wanted to fall under his spell again. Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes as she ran.

Why was he here? Oh, why hadn't she moved away when she had the…chance? Chance! Suddenly she pounded faster, the narrow toe of her boots chafing against her feet.

Jericho couldn't see Chance. She wouldn't let that happen. God, please!

Ali zeroed in on her sister Kate milling next to the volleyball court.

She waved her arms. "Quick! We have to find Chance! Now!" Ali pressed a hand to the stitch in her side as she looked over her shoulder, scanning the crowd for the cowboy with impossibly blue eyes. He hadn't followed her.

Kate jogged toward Ali, her eyes wide. "Sis? I don't see smoke coming from your hair, so if it's not on fire—what is?"

She seized Kate's arms, clamping down on reality. "He's here. He's back. What am I supposed to… What if he… What about Chance?" Her voice rose in a frenzy.

Kate shook her gently. "Who's here?"

"My husband."

"Ali! Alison!" With his hands looped onto his belt buckle, Jericho kicked, sending a cloud of Montana dust into the air. Maybe he should chase after her, but his knees probably couldn't handle running at that clip.

Great. Just great.

He rubbed the back of his neck as Ali hightailed it like a spooked filly. At that speed, she might make the Canadian border by nightfall. It sure wasn't funny, though. A man couldn't laugh, not when the rejection felt like a sledgehammer hitting him square in the chest. The cold look in her hazel eyes told him where he stood. Unwelcome. Unforgiven. How could he have expected anything else? But her reaction rankled him all the same.

He rubbed his jaw and growled. Could he blame her? No. What kind of man envisions a warm welcome after eight years of silence? Jericho Eli Freed. Stupid man.

A young boy with floppy hair ambled toward him. "Are you really a soldier?"

Jericho cleared his throat, pulled at the fabric of his army pants and dropped to one knee. "I sure am." Or was.

"That's cool. I want to be a soldier someday." At this confession, the child looked down and dug his toe into the ground.

Keeping his voice low to draw the kid out of his shell, Jericho asked, "Do you feel funny around new people? 'Cause I sure do. When I was your age, I just had one friend in the world and she was the only person I'd talk to." Jericho laid a hand on the boy's scrawny shoulder.

Suddenly a shadow loomed over them. "Get your hands off of him."

Jericho jerked back and looked up—and his mouth fell open. Fire in her eyes, Ali Silver stood there, an arm wrapped around the boy as she pulled him close.

Jericho jumped to his feet, putting his hands palm up in surrender.

Even seething mad, beauty radiated from her. Sure, she had changed in the last eight years, but in a good way. Auburn mellowed her once fire-truck-red hair. The long tresses he remembered were now cut so they skimmed her ears. Cute.

Ali. His Ali. She'd been a slim thing, barely entering womanhood when he left. Now she had gentle curves that he had to school his eyes not to explore. Her hazel eyes held a soft sincerity that drew him in. A familiar tightening gripped his stomach as his pulse started to go berserk.

The kid pushed against her. "No, Mom, he's not a stranger. This is a soldier. We were becoming friends."

Jericho's mind raced like a mouse caught in a maze. Mom? The single word sent a zap through his body, like someone had dumped a vat of ice over his head. Ali was a mother? Had she remarried? Impossible. The kid was what? Six? Seven—?

"Ali?" He tried to meet her gaze, but she looked away.

"Hey, Chance." Ali leaned over to speak close to the child's ear. "I think I see your teacher, Mrs. McBride, over there. Can you do me a favor and find out how she liked those pies we made her?"

"Ali?" Jericho repeated. His mind latched onto the name Chance and filed it away for later.

Chance's brow creased. He looked at Jericho, then back at his mother. "How come he knows your name, Mom?"

Despite the sweltering day, a cold sweat pricked the back of Jericho's neck.

Her mouth went dry. No matter what, Ali had to get Chance away from Jericho. She placed her hands on her hips. "It doesn't matter, Chance. Now go visit with Mrs. McBride for a minute." After sending Chance away, she took a deep breath and turned to address Jericho, but couldn't make herself completely meet his gaze. "I don't know why you're here—"

"We need to talk." He shoved his hands into his pockets.

"There is no 'we.'"

He quirked an eyebrow. "I disagree. Unless I slept through signing some sort of papers, you and I, well, we're still married."

Her tongue suddenly felt like a dried-up riverbed. We 're still married. Fear skittered down her spine like racing spiders. Of course. As a teen mom on her own, she didn't have spare money to toss around on lawyer fees.

She balled up her fists. "I want you to leave."

He shook his head, reached a hand out toward her, then dropped it to his side. "I'm back, Ali—back for good."

"Why?" The word came out more whisper than force.

She stared into his intense blue eyes, her gaze dipping to the single freckle above his lip. Same dime-sized scar near his eye, the slight tug of his lips—always ready to joke.

He stepped closer. "I need to talk to you. Explain about being away."

"Just being away? How nice. Sounds warm and fuzzy, like you took a vacation."

He ran a hand over his hair, cupping the back of his neck as he tipped his head to the side. "I always wanted to come back. But—"

"Stay away from me. Stay away from my son."

"I need to—" He reached for her. She slapped away his hand.

"Ali…" He grabbed her elbow, and a thrill skittered up her arm and down into her stomach. She let out a muffled cry. Why? Why, after all these years, was his name still branded across her heart?

Fighting the hot tears stinging her eyes, she jerked fro...

Enjoyable, Heartwarming Story
By Karolyn N.
I was amazed at how easily I got lost in the story! I could picture Ali Silver's farmhouse and the entire town of Bitterroot Valley. I felt emotional as the story deepened and, quickly, I got carried away with the characters. Every sight, every sound, every smell, and every touch came to life. Each of my senses came alive as Jessica's carefully chosen words made my mind's eye burst with images. I could not put this book down!

I have come to adore this story and beautiful message it offers. Not only is it heartwarming, romantic, and very well-written, but it also offers a message of faith, hope, and the power of forgiveness. There is encouragement within the pages and a subtle personal challenge for readers to evaluate their own walk with God.

Personally, I admire and appreciate a movie, television show, or book that can share a great story without filling my mind with foul language, nudity, and crude behavior. These days, many producers and writers seem to believe that in order to successfully entertain us they are required to fill our imaginations with so much junk, it's discouraging.

Jessica's book is refreshing and perfect proof that you don't need senseless violence, detailed sex scenes, and vulgar language to fill a story and make it exciting and enjoyable. All it takes is great, creative writing. Mission accomplished, Jessica -- and thank you!

There is no doubt in my mind, I will read this book again.

Fun read with a powerful theme throughout
By BKaczmarek
Jericho Freed made a promise to love and protect his wife. Trouble is, for a handful of years, he walked away in order to protect her from himself. Now, after finding Christ and realizing how wrong he was to leave her, he's back to win her heart all over again. But it isn't going to be easy. Ali Silver has her guard up, and she's not quick to trust.
At all. Especially when their son Chance is involved.
I'm not the type to pick up a romance often, but this book came highly recommended from someone who knows the value of an unforgettable hero. And they were spot on.
Whatever it takes, Jericho strives to earn Ali's trust. He works at being an honorable man in his son's eyes even before he knows the boy is his. He protects Ali, keeping an eye out whether she wants him to or not. But most of all--and this was what sold me--he knows the value of genuine forgiveness. He offers it when it's needed, he seeks it for his own failures, and he understands that a simple apology can't wash away years of hurt.
This is the picture that stuck with me. Home for Good is short and sweet, but there's nothing trite about this honest look at what it takes to make a marriage work. The book has complex characters that didn't always do what I wanted or expected (but who does?) and enough twists to keep me guessing about how everything would wrap up in the end. Definitely worth buying.

Home for Good
Jessica Keller

What an amazing book! I laughed, cried, hoped, and cheered with the wonderful characters in this debut novel by Jessica Keller. Home for Good is about Jericho Freed who left his home, his wife, and an unborn child because he was a drunk. Eight years later he approaches Ali Silver, his wife, and she takes off running, literally.
Is it too late for Jericho to ask for forgiveness? Forgiveness means you grant pardon for what happened. Can Ali forgive Jericho and let him be a father to Chance and a husband to her? She's afraid she will get hurt again if he leaves a second time, and she has Chance to think about. How will it affect him if his daddy takes off again? Ali must learn to forgive and to trust. You experience freedom in forgiveness. You're not bitter, resentful, or angry anymore. Can Ali let all that go to have the life God wants for her? Do you need a fresh start like Ali does? You're identity is not the makeup of past mistakes. You now have a clean slate to change your world and start over.
Ali is having issues of her own out of her nonprofit business Big Sky Dreams for handicapped children. Money is missing, things are tampered with, cattle are set free and lost or killed, tires are slashed, and horses are turned loose. Who is responsible for these events? Who can Ali trust? This all started happening when Jericho came back to town. Are the events related, or is someone else behind the mayhem? Can Ali put her trust back in God, even though she feels He left her? Will she realize God has always been there, it was she who walked away from God? He's always been right there waiting for her to turn back to Him.
You will not believe the twists and turns in this story, and the perfect ending. When you let God have control, anything can happen! Come join Ali and Jericho and the other wonderful characters in this sweet, engaging story by Jessica Keller. I look forward to reading more by this author. If you love Christian Romance that portrays a deeper understanding of love, forgiveness, trust, and hope, this book is for you!

"Dahlia!"

"Here, Dahlia!"

"Dahlia, smile!"

Dahlia Morrow could not have been happier as she stepped out of the limousine in front of the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard for the Eighty-Fifth Academy Awards. The paparazzi were desperate for her attention as cameras f lashed around her and complete strangers screamed her name as if they were old friends.

"We love you, Dahlia!"

Dahlia stood in the requisite pose at the beginning of the red carpet, one hand perched pristinely against the curve of her hip. She smiled sweetly as her gaze skated over the landscape of actors and film critics, photographers and television hosts who were out in full force.

Being front and center was typical for the long list of film personalities present, but few filmmakers had ever received the kind of attention that Dahlia was receiving. Dahlia Morrow was an exception to the iconic rules; her fame had grown to significant proportions despite her best efforts to stay out of the limelight. From the start of her career to that very moment, the attention lavished on her had been formidable, as if she'd been the face in front of the cameras and not the brain trust behind them. And all because of her very brief romantic connection to one of the film industry's biggest stars; the majority of it had been headline fodder for the tabloids. Recognizing an opportunity, Dahlia had fostered the public's fascination with her into a highly recognized brand. Turning that moment of cause cele-bre to her advantage now made her accomplishments instant news success.

Dahlia continued her slow stroll down the red carpet, pausing for snapshots and interviews. All of her hard work for the past two years had culminated in this one evening and she wanted to savor every moment of it. She paused in reflection, the moment captured for posterity as cameras continued to flash around her. Her brilliant smile dazzled her admirers.

Her first film project had been a two-minute short, a senior project in college. Her film teacher had submitted the assignment to a nationwide competition, and when Dahlia's had been selected best overall, winning her an internship with one of the largest film studios on the West Coast, her career in the movie industry was born.

And tonight her talent was being acknowledged by the industry with her latest film, Victory's Daughter, which was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Reviewers, pundits and bookies were predicting Victory's Daughter would sweep the Oscars, and Dahlia was betting on herself, as well.

This was her night, and Dahlia imagined that the only thing that could have made the moment more perfect was if she was walking the red carpet with a man she was head over heels in love with. Walking the red carpet with Drake Houston, however, would do. The renowned actor and playwright reveled in his own notoriety. Besides, he looked good with his windblown blond locks and ocean-blue eyes. Side by side they made a handsome couple. It would play nicely on the entertainment news and the cover of Variety magazine, Dahlia thought.

She beamed as one of the top radio personalities and television hosts rushed her with a microphone in his hand. In her classic Christian Dior couture gown and Christian Louboutin red-bottomed heels, she looked absolutely stunning. And her face radiated joy.

"Ryan, it's great to be here!" Dahlia exclaimed.

"Well, you look great," the host declared. "How does it feel to be the center of attention tonight?"

Dahlia smiled sweetly. "Well, I can tell you that I'm immensely proud that Victory's Daughter has gotten the many accolades it has. I loved the story, and I loved being able to tell it on film. I have to acknowledge the amazing cast and crew who helped to make it such a success. I couldn't have done it without them, and I'm confident that Brad, Hillary and Halle will all walk away with Oscars tonight for their stunning performances."

After fielding a few more questions, Dahlia continued to make her way down the red-carpeted path, posing for pictures and doing short interviews for the other major networks until she and Drake made their way to the building's entrance and were whisked inside and escorted to their seats.

Once inside she expressed her annoyance with her escort. "Drake, dear, you are going to wrinkle my dress with all the hugging. I need a little breathing room, my friend."

Drake chuckled warmly. "Can you blame me for wanting to hold tight to you, beautiful? You know how much I adore you, Dahlia!" He leaned to kiss her closed mouth but was met with her cheek instead.

The woman rolled her eyes, taking a deep inhale of breath. "Drake, you know I adore you and I consider you one of my closest friends, but you and I don't roll like that. And I hate having to say that over and over again. I don't want us to become bad friends, so please—" she paused momentarily "—please, cut me some slack!"

Drake heaved a deep sigh and nodded. "I had to try, Dahlia. What kind of man would I be if I didn't?" he asked with a slight shrug and a wry smile.

Dahlia chuckled softly, reaching up to give him a light kiss on his cheek. "I still love you, but you'll need to find someone else to take home to bed tonight."

Laughing, Drake gave her a quick wink. "You won't be disappointed if I do?"

She shook her head. "Not at all! But for now I need to go freshen up my makeup. Why don't you go say hello to Eastwood? He looks like he wants to speak with you," she said as she turned. She tossed him a quick look over her shoulder. "And don't worry if I don't come back. I'll make sure there's someone else here to take my place." She sauntered in the opposite direction.

"Take care of that for me!" Drake laughed as he blew her a kiss.

Out in the lobby, she gestured for one of the Academy pages. The young woman smiled excitedly at her. "Yes, Ms. Morrow? How may I help you?"

"I absolutely love my dress," Dahlia whispered as she leaned in conspiratorially. "But it's not the most comfortable thing to sit down in." She giggled softly. "Would you please send a seat-filler to my spot? I plan to stay in the greenroom until it's my turn to present."

"Yes, Ms. Morrow. Will Mr. Houston be joining you?"

Dahlia shook her head. "No, don't disturb him. He'll be fine. Just send someone very, very pretty to sit beside him," she said as she headed down the corridor toward the back of the stage, where there was a holding area for performers and those who were presenting.

As she rounded the corner, Dahlia ran smack into Owen Kestner, one of the evening's nominees for Best Supporting Actor. A former NFL professional, the rough-and-tumble linebacker smiled at her excitedly.

"Dahlia Morrow! Aren't you a sight for sore eyes!" the handsome man exclaimed.

"Owen, how are you?" Dahlia said sweetly.

"Just a little nervous. How about you?"

Dahlia nodded. "Nervous, too, but excited." She met his gaze evenly, taking note of his good looks and muscular frame. There was a mischievous gleam in his eyes as he stared at her intently. "So who's your date this evening?" she asked coyly.

The man chuckled warmly. "I'm riding solo tonight," he said, tossing her a quick wink. "But I saw you came with Drake Houston."

Dahlia smiled as she took a step closer to him. She drew her fingers against the front of his shirt, adjusting his bow tie and the front of his tuxedo jacket. She tilted her head to stare up at him. "I did come with Drake, but it doesn't mean I'll be leaving with him," she said, her tone dropping to a seductive whisper.

Owen smiled, his eyes brightening with interest. "And I imagine you'll be hitting all the A-list parties after the ceremony?"

Dahlia grinned. "If that works for you?" she said, sensing that her A-list access was all that he would be looking for.

"Would you mind if my friend Charles tagged along?" he queried, his eyes wide with anticipation.

Dahlia laughed. "Not at all."

Owen nodded eagerly, his smile bright. "My limo or yours?"

Dahlia laughed, winking her own eye. "Yours. I don't want to leave my friend Drake stranded."

"But it's not like you had tickets?" Mason Boudreaux said, eyeing his younger brother with confusion. "Or did you have tickets?"

Guy Boudreaux cut his eyes skyward, annoyed by his older brother's question. He nodded his head, the long length of his dreadlocks waving against his broad shoulders. "Of course I had tickets. Good seats, as a matter of fact. And invitations to the best Oscar parties. You can't beat that kind of networking, brother!"

Mason nodded his understanding. "Well, I appreciate you giving up the Oscars to make it to my wedding."

"What are best men for?" Guy said, beaming widely as he looked from his brother to his new sister-in-law.

The newly minted Phaedra Boudreaux smiled back. "So, what will you do when you do get back to California?" she asked, snuggling close to her new husband.

"I'll be filming a commercial next week. I'm now the spokesman for the new Chanel for Men cologne."

Having a lightbulb moment, Guy suddenly leaned forward in his seat. "Hey, by the way, Phaedra, I could really use some new head shots. Do you think you can hook me up?"

Mason rolled his eyes. "That means he wants a family discount!" he said as he hugged Phaedra tightly.

"No," Guy protested. "That means I want it free."

Phaedra, an award-winning professional photographer, laughed. "I think we could probably work something out."

Guy winked. "I'd like that," he said, laughing easily, his magnetic smile beaming brightly.

Mason shook his head. Afte...

The Next Dynasty

This story is HAWT! Guy and Dahlia have amazing emotional and sensual chemistry. I read this story from start to finish without taking a break. I simply could not stop reading the firestorm of energy and sexual tension these two created every time they stepped on the scene.

Guy showed dominance, confidence and vulnerability that made me immediately fall in love with him. He was the perfect match for Dahlia who comes from a small family and likes to be in control. She was likeable, strong minded, successful and managed her image like a champ. Even with all those qualities, she could not guard her heart against Guy. When she finally let go trusted him I cheered for them like I would watching my favorite basketball team.

I absolutely loved the Stallion series and I can see this series will be equal to it if not better. I also love that the author brings the Stallions back in this series in a way that does not dominate the new characters but gives them credibility. The Boudreaux family is a tight knit loving group of siblings that I can see will give me hours of reading pleasure.

This Kimani romance brings a high level of eroticism that I've not read in other Kimani novels. I was pleasantly surprised by the level of heat this story brings (straddles the line) while delivering a well written and constructed storyline rich with good plot development.

I will be marking my calendar for the next release. I will be putting this entire series on pre-order. This author has always been an auto-buy for me and the legacy continues.

Wonderful story. Guy and Dahlia were paired beautifully. They had wonderful chemistry. The intimacy scenes were hot, hot, hot. Dahlia was strong, smart and in control. Guy was passionate, funny and he knows what he wants. They make an outstanding power couple.

This story gets the reader excited about The Boudreaux series.

This is a must read and is definitely in my re-read pile.

The Presidential Difference: Leadership Style from FDR to Barack Obama, by Fred I. Greenstein

Fred I. Greenstein has long been one of our keenest observers of the modern presidency. In The Presidential Difference, he provides a fascinating and instructive account of the presidential qualities that have served well and poorly in the Oval Office, beginning with Franklin D. Roosevelt's first hundred days. He surveys each president's political skill, vision, cognitive style, organizational capacity, ability to communicate, and emotional intelligence--and argues that the last is the most important in predicting presidential success. Throughout, Greenstein offers a series of bottom-line judgments on each of his thirteen subjects as well as an overarching theory of why presidents succeed or fail.

In this new edition, Greenstein assesses President George W. Bush in the wake of his two terms. The book also includes a new chapter on the leadership style of President Obama and how we can expect it to affect his presidency and legacy.

Interesting and Informative
By S. Robison
Greenstein's work is a necessary point of interest for any scholar of the American presidency. Often, when one considers the presidency, chief among the considerations is a president's accomplishments or his chief policy failures. Focus is given to the opposition just as it is given to the president's party in judging whether a chief executive has lived up to his fullest potential.

What is often overlooked, however, is the personality of the man in office. This has, as Greenstein notes, a tremendous impact on not only his organizational ability but his ability to retain and gather support. Clearly, too, the president's affability is of vital importance in today's media, as his charisma. Greenstein's work allows comparison among all presidents since FDR. Obviously this should not be read without some knowledge of the American presidency, yet it is an easy and entertaining read that delves into a facet of our nation's power that many overlook yet, in reality, may have one of the biggest impacts of all.

This book does not compare substantively to James David Barber's "The Presidential Character," yet it does provide a more concise and readable summary of the subject that would be a warm-up to Barber's masterpiece work.

Require reading I ended up loving
By Alyssa Michelle
Bought for a class, but I liked this enough that I've read it twice. It's insightful, humorous and thought-provoking (though the final chapter on President Obama now seems less than accurate). I lent it to my dad and he enjoyed it as well. Great book, worth getting even if it's not for class. It gives a short (ten page) summary of a president's background, rise in politics, and actions in the White House before rating each president on six traits: public communication, organizational capacity, political skill, vision, cognitive style, emotional intelligence. He then sums up what we can learn from each president. It has a surprising amount of depth and information but the fluid prose and balance between formal and informal makes it a pleasure to read. In fact, I think I'll go do so again.

Why presidents succeed
By Frank H. Mackaman
I use The Presidential Difference to stimulate discussion in a college-level White House simulation about the factors that account for presidential success. Students grasp the concepts quickly and are able to apply the factors to other leadership settings.

The Problem Of The Soul: Two Visions Of Mind And How To Reconcile Them, by Owen Flanagan

Science has always created problems for traditional ways of seeing things, but now the very attributes that make us human--free will, the permanence of personal identity, the existence of the soul--are threatened by the science of the mind. If the mind is the brain, and therefore a physical object subject to deterministic laws, how can we have free will? If most of our thoughts and impulses are unconscious, how can we be morally responsible for what we do? If brains and bodies undergo relentless change, how can our identities be constant? The Problem of the Soul shows the way out of these paradoxes. Framing the conflict in terms of two dominant visions of the mind--the "manifest image" of humanistic philosophy and theology, and the scientific image--Owen Flanagan demonstrates that there is common ground, and that we need not give up our ideas of moral responsibility and personal freedom in order to have an empirically sound view of the human mind. This is a profoundly relevant work of philosophy for the common reader.

Modern philosophy at its best
By Science Guy
In this book, one of the world's most important and under-recognized philosophers addresses what is arguably the major cultural question of our times: Can the humanistic and even religious view of human nature be reconciled with science?
Flanagan is a witty, entertaining writer, who eschews the jargon and abstractions that deaden the prose of the vast majority of academic philosophers. And unlike philosophers such as Daniel Dennett, Flanagan is less intent on demonstrating his cleverness than on presenting his thoughts as clearly as possible. Although he is steeped in knowledge-from Aristotle to the latest findings of cognitive science-Flanagan wears his learning lightly. His writings are rigorous enough for professionals-philosophers and scientists paid to ponder the mind-body problem and other enigmas-while remaining accessible for lay readers. And shouldn't philosophy be for everyone?
Flanagan is basically a scientific materialist, who believes that the mind is a function of the brain and cannot exist independently of it. In The Problem of the Soul, he dismisses such supernatural concepts as God, the immortal soul, life after death, and even free will, defined as freedom from physical causality. But he argues convincingly that if we jettison a supernatural outlook, we are left not with an anything-goes nihilism but with an even more secure foundation for morality.
Flanagan deftly draws upon his personal experience to explore certain questions-for example, what concept of a self makes sense, given all the changes we pass through in life? He reveals his family's history of alcoholism, his decision to stop drinking, his recent interest in Buddhism. In the hands of a lesser writer, this approach would seem self-indulgent, but Flanagan makes it poignant and compelling. There is a warmth suffusing his prose that counteracts the chill of his ideas, and even lends them a kind of tacit support: ultimately, it is simple human decency that will save us (if we can be saved) and not faith in some supernatural metaphysics.
A book like this is bound to provoke-indeed invites-objections, and I have a couple. One is that the free will Flanagan attacks-a dualistic version that assumes absolute freedom from physical causality--is something of a straw man. I believe that science undermines any meaningful concept of human choice, including the one that Flanagan articulates.
I also see a potential weakness in Flanagan's concept of an "ethical ecology." He suggests that, just as ecologists seek to understand the factors that contribute to a healthy ecosystem, so should our ethics aim at delineating conditions conducive to our "flourishing." The tenets of ecology-for example, the notion that diversity of species leads to ecological stability-are contentious, to say the least, and hence might not provide the kind of the secure foundation for human ethics that Flanagan envisions. But of course Flanagan wrote this book not to give us answers but to incite further reflection and dialogue. He succeeds splendidly. We need philosophers like him.

"Do I Dare Disturb the Universe?" Dare I Not?
By Jared Wood
I was going to grad school in philosophy before I read this book--I think--but I was worried about whether or not I would ever get to work on the things that really matter. I'm not worried anymore. Although I am wondering if I'll have to do all the other work Flanagan has done before I get the nerve to publish anything. Cognitive neuroscience, psychology, literature (with minor side interests in sociology and religion)--it's a wonder that I can understand anything the man says. But I found this book to be one of the clearest, most enjoyable things I ever read.
The Problem of the Soul is an amazing synthesis in which ethics meets the scientifically savvy 21st century--it's the book Nietzsche would have written if he had been interested in being understood. No other single text has had such an impact on the way I think, and I am in awe of the man who can build so much of the argument from scratch while getting so much right. Flanagan does indeed have the hands of a surgeon: there's no flinching here, and it's a light touch the whole way through. Whatever pain might be involved in the excision is masked by this surgeon's crooked grin; good humor is a great palliative.
This book is for people who want to enjoy reading something that will challenge how they think. It's an amazing primer for academic philosophy (frightening how much I learned without even realizing it--I can't tell you how much I wish I'd read it before I took all those stupid courses), and it reads like a novel. I can honestly say that I've never before had the experience of having to make myself put down a philosophy text in order to get some work done. It was a beautiful thing.
Written for a general audience, The Problem of the Soul comes across as a late-night conversation with a really exciting person you just met at the local pub or coffeehouse. It's written with style and personality, and you truly feel as if you get to know this guy. Which turns out to be a good thing--he's a really great person.
I don't want to give the impression that I'm all for everything that Flanagan says. Actually, I'm the president of the group responsible for promoting interfaith dialogue on campus at Duke University, and I have something of a vested interest in refuting many of his arguments about matters of faith. I wish I could. I do believe there are some valid responses to most of the things he says, but I also believe that all those responses involve some serious re-evaluations. One thing I'm certain of is that all religious people have an undeniable obligation to read this book (to themselves, to their faiths). I applaud Flanagan for the effort he puts into opening up a genuine dialogue: he shows extreme sensitivity in treating people of faith as fellow creatures worthy of dignity and respect (even as he challenges the very beliefs that are generally thought to provide the foundation for that faith).
Reading this book refreshed my vision and rekindled my passion for philosophy. If I had to recommend just one philosophy book for each and every person to read, this would be it. Do yourself a favor and buy it. For those with slightly more specialized interests, you might want to check out Flanagan's other works. Varieties of Moral Personality and Dreaming Souls have become my new favorites; I'm going after the philosophy of mind stuff next. But none of them beats The Problem of the Soul, so make sure you get that one first.

Thought-provoking, enjoyable.
By Carey Allen
I truly enjoyed this book. One can always find something to carp about in a philosophy text, but this book does an excellent job discussing a number of BIG questions - mind, free will, the self, ethics, the meaning of life. If you have read widely, you will have seen many of the arguments presented here, but Flanagan does a wonderful job of weaving them together. I especially enjoyed his approach to ethics as a normative science (!) describing human ecologies. Flanagan's exposition will almost certainly challenge some of your ideas, but the objective here is not to find some final set of answers, but rather, to refine our questions. In that, the author succeeds brilliantly.
