Meet the “match made in heaven” between religion and science as they harmoniously converge through exploring the Catholic view on God and evolution. Author Dr. Verschuuren, a practicing Catholic and human geneticist, challenges the ‘black and white’ attitude toward matters of religion and science. Through drawing upon religion, philosophy, and biology, he reveals that science and religion answer different dimensions to the same fundamental question, “Where do we come from?” allowing for a compatible, and desirable coexistence—one that preserves, and in fact intensifies, God’s splendor.

Review
"I can promise you this book is going to enrich your mind and deepen your faith. It is a must read, clear and concise, filled with biblical and scientific truths. I enjoyed the book enormously. I even read it on a plane during one of my pastoral travels"
Bishop Carlos A. Sevilla, S.J., Diocese of Yakima, WA (taken from his foreword)
"This is a well-written work that discusses the position of the Catholic Church with regard to the theory of evolution. The scientific explanations are exceptionally clear. Dr. Verschuuren makes fine use of modern sources and has produced a book that is to be praised and hopefully extensively read."
Bishop John B. McCormack, Diocese of Manchester, NH
"Dr. Gerard M. Verschuuren is the latest and by far I think the most successful of an admittedly small group of scholars to tackle the topic. A geneticist and programmer by training, he not only gets the science of evolution right -- there is an obvious sense of joy that he takes in writing about the subject from his firsthand experience as well as from his reading of the research literature. [...] To sum up: Taken as a book intended for Catholics who want to know more about the science of evolution and the debate about its role in society and culture, "God and Evolution?" serves admirably."
John Farrell in the Huffington Post, Nov. 17, 2012
From the Back Cover
"Scientific knowledge on the cosmic and on the biological evolution has become highly strengthened in recent decades. Evolutionary progress results from quite slow dynamic processes that reveal natural laws for permanent creation. Verschuuren's book can be expected to foster a harmonious integration of scientific facts together with religious beliefs into our orientational knowledge."
Professor Werner Arber, Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Basel, Switzerland.
"God and Evolution? is a thoughtful, well argued, and easy to read presentation of the conversation between science and faith. As Gerard Verschuuren argues, science and religion, or evolution and creation are two windows that see the world from different perspectives which are not contradictory but complementary. Dr. Verschuuren documents the religious perspective with pertinent citations from Scripture, theologians, and philosophers. As an expert biologist, he convincingly makes the case for science."
Francisco J. Ayala, University and Donald Bren Professor of Evolutionary Biology,
University of California, Irvine, CA.
"... a solid guide for those who could be confused by the hastily written presentations in the media about the complex question of evolution versus creation."
Fr. Marcel Chappin, S.J., Professor at the Theology Department,
Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
"I found the book very interesting and unusually user-friendly. Whether the reader agrees or disagrees with the controversial thesis of this book, it is clearly and strongly argued and it is a delightful and enlightening read. I like the book very much."
Peter Kreeft, Professor of Philosophy, Boston College, MA.
"An enlightening and delightful tour through the issues of faith and science that continue to swirl around Darwin's great idea. Verschuuren's ease with science, philosophy, and theology will surely help to defuse the tiresome rhetoric of God vs. science that is so common today."
Kenneth R. Miller, Professor of Biology, Brown University, RI.
"Gerard M. Verschuuren has done us all a favor by giving us a clear, faithful, and lucid survey of the Catholic position on evolution, showing that real science and real Catholic faith not only have nothing to fear from each other, but also are vital to illuminating one another"
Mark P. Shea, senior writer for catholicexchange.com,
and columnist for the National Catholic Register.

A helpful introduction, particularly for Roman Catholics
By Paul R. Bruggink
This book was written primarily for Catholics by a human geneticist and practicing Catholic with a doctorate in the philosophy of science.
Chapter 1 traces the official history of the Catholic position on evolution.
Chapter 2 emphasizes the creation accounts in the Bible as giving a theological as opposed to a scientific or historical message. The author focuses on Genesis 1 in the context of the framework theory as opposed to being a chronological account of creation.
In Chapter 3, he briefly discusses seven types of evidences to show the fact of evolution and eight claims that science cannot make. On the relationship between science and religion, he is a consistent advocate of the Independence model (as opposed to the Conflict, Dialogue or Integration models). He believes that the Book of Nature and the Book of Scripture complement each other.
In Chapter 4, he carefully distinguishes between the science of evolution and the ideology of evolutionism. He then discusses seven problems that evolutionism faces. The author then goes on to make the case against creationism, discussing seven problems that creationism faces. His discussion of Intelligent Design Theory focuses on seven objections to ID theory.
He suggests that “[t]he evolutionary pathway followed so far was to a certain extent preordained by the intrinsic properties of the materials involved, given a certain kind of environment or succession of environmental conditions. Because of those intrinsic properties and constraints of a created universe—that is, due to the cosmic design of creation—we might go as far as to speculate that our world was bound, by its very nature, to give birth to life, perhaps even to human life.” (p. 130)
Chapter 4 concludes with a brief summary table of the objections against evolutionism, creationism, and intelligent design theory.
In Chapter 5, the author briefly discusses the body-soul-mind issue, God’s presence in his creation, divine action, values, and when and where humanity may have emerged.
Each of the five chapters includes a brief Delving Deeper section. His 3-page Index is rather skimpy. For example, the term “cosmic design,” which he refers to frequently, doesn’t appear in his index. His Suggestions for Further Reading is also rather brief.
Despite frequent references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and statements from various Popes, this book can serve as a helpful introduction to the subject of God and evolution for readers of other faiths (myself included) as well.

A provocative, feisty, and fun read
By James Watrous
This is book a provocative, feisty, and fun read. Dr. Vershuuren argues that God and evolution and religion and science are compatible with each other. He is also extremely critical of evolutionism, scientism, creationism, and Intellegent Design as being unscientific and the latter two harming religion. He uses very lively and clear prose to express his argument. I recommend it.
