The Battle of Gettysburg lasted only three days but involved more than 160,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. Seven thousand died outright on the battlefield; hundreds more later succumbed to their wounds. For each of these soldiers, family members somewhere waited anxiously. Some went to Gettysburg themselves in search of their wounded loved ones. Some were already present as soldiers themselves.
In this book are extraordinary--and sometimes heartbreaking--stories of the strength of family ties during the Battle of Gettysburg. Excerpts from diaries, letters and other correspondence provide a firsthand account of the human drama of Gettsyburg on the battlefield and the home front.

AMERICAN HEARTACHE
By KENYON B. FITZGERALD
This is a magnificently researched book which should be read by every American Civil War historian, buff, and social historian of the period. As the grandson of a civil war infantryman(114th PA.Vols.),who died some twelve years before I was born, and who's two brothers were killed, one at Gettysburg (114thPA.),and one at Petersburg(2nd PA.Hvy.Arty.),I have some feeling for the subject. No matter how hard boiled you think you are,the bravery of the soldiers, and especially the bravery of their families will bring tears to your eyes! Despite the author's fine writing style, and excellent presentation, this is a tough book to read.

Gettysburg and Encounters Among Kinfolk in the War of "Brother Against Brother"
By Albert A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com

'Torn Families is a curious and interesting work. Gettysburg is only incidental to the point of the book. Dreese, who has written extensively on Civil War and Pennsylvania history, including Never Desert the Old Flag!: 50 Stories of Union Battle Flags and Color-Bearers at Gettysburg and Disgrace at Gettysburg: The Arrest and Court Martial of Brigadier General Thomas A. Rowley, uses the battle to focus on the complex networks of kinship that linked many of the 160,000-some soldiers, North and South, and the hundreds of thousands of civilians caught up in various ways in the historic and catastrophic encounter. The eight chapters explore different aspects of familial connection: "Fathers and Sons," "Mothers and sons," "Husbands, Wives, and Sweethearts," "Union Brothers," "Confederate Brothers," "Twins," "Sibling Reunions," and end with "Homecomings." The "encounters" were at times very direct, with sons fighting on the family lands or brother literally fighting brother, or parent seeing a son fall. At other times the "encounter" is less direct, such as letters home, a parent or wife travelling hundreds of miles to seek a loved one among the wounded, or even veterans meeting long afterwards. Torn Families will prove rewarding reading for anyone interested in the human tragedy of war.
