Seasoned Professional Shares Key Insights

Cindi Howson has impressed me as a thoughtful and knowledgeable professional who has contributed greatly to the BI field by living in the trenches, digging into the details, and teaching others about her experiences.

It is hard to find a comprehensive book on BI that is written without an impenetrable cloud of technical concepts. Ten years ago, successful BI depended on the expert execution of those technical concepts. However, BI has matured, increasing the importance of nontechnical factors for successful BI.

This book tracks this trend by clarifying the current success factors for successful BI projects. Oldies and goodies are covered, such as the necessity of executive support, data quality, and business-IT partnership. However, the real contribution lies in highlighting some of the new success factors, such as:

- Measuring Success: If you can not measure BI, you will not be successful. The book suggests numerous ways to measuring your BI effort.

- Role of Luck, Opportunity, Frustration and Threat: We hate to admit it, but BI projects are often successful (or not) for reasons beyond our control or even our imagination. Get over it! The book suggests ways of maximizing your success by making you aware of this dynamic.

- Agile Development: Do not build BI systems in the old traditional way. We all know this. But do we know a good alternative? The book outlines the Agile Manifesto to deliver early and continuous versions, embrace requirements changes, intensify person interactions, etc.

Strong on the business side of BI development - light on the technical and tactical

Secrets to making BI a killer app would be better worded "Secrets for a successful BI initiative" (though that is far less interesting). Howson concentrates on the practical aspects of building demand for BI, working through the politics/sponsorship, and team organization. Most of the information was very high level and though reinforced with real world examples provided little in the way of practical and actionable examples.

If you are new to BI management and looking for a project overview, I'd recommend the book. If you are looking details, technical examples, detailed case studies and steps of MAKING a killer BI app, not just describing the project, development and business buy-in process, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Of worthy note is the authors frequent recommendation of involving business users early and often, securing a strong sponsor, speaking business-speak, short iteration deployments and making sure the tool fits the job.

Excellent Book for those New to BI or Running BI Shops

Excellent book defining BI best practices, how BI measures processes, BI for process improvement, defining what BI is, how to set up a BI strategy with real-life case studies.

I cannot tell you how many times I have referred to this book - it is dog-eared, post-it noted, and referred to many times in my daily life of working in Business Intelligence.

Cindi Howson explains what BI is, what agile is, what's worked well, what hasn't worked well, and there's a survey at the back of the book that I am anxious to use. For example, I have heard the term "agile BI" several times at trade shows but I never really understood it until I read this book.

This book is a must-read for those working in BI, managing BI, or those who need to strategize based on BI results. It is a fantastic book!

A fascinating insight into the most powerful man in UK radio

I've never read a book in one day before - but this book was impossible to put down. It is the fascinating story of a man described in the forward as the most powerful man in UK radio. John Myers is the former CEO of GMG Radio and in this book he reveals all about the company that he gave birth too, and walked away from a decade later. The book is often hilarious, occasionally moving but unquestionably gripping. For anyone to walk away from a million pounds is tough - but he did it! in fact, he almost did it twice! His fun and contagious personality bursts from every page. If you are in the radio business you will adore this book and if your only relationship with radio is as a listener, it will be just as interesting & enjoyable. I hope this is just part one of his story and I'm already waiting for part two!

Since its publication in 1950, Protestant Biblical Interpretation has been a standard introduction to hermeneutics in evangelical colleges and seminaries. Twice revised, this textbook has sold well over 100,000 copies. Now this venerable resource is available in a paperback edition.

"Hermeneutics," writes the author, "is the science and art of Biblical interpretation. . . . As such it forms one of the most important members of the theological sciences. This is especially true for conservative Protestantism, which looks on the Bible as . . . the only authoritative voice of God to man."

After surveying the history of biblical interpretation, the author devotes seventy pages to explicating "the Protestant system of hermeneutics." He then discusses the doctrinal, devotional, and practical uses of the Bible. Following a chapter on the hermeneutical dimension of the problem of biblical inerrancy and secular science, he concludes with chapters on the interpretation of types, prophecy, and parables.

Protestant Biblical Interpretation by Bernard Ramm

Ramm's book is a foundational textbook for anyone who wants to begin a study of hermeneutics. Unlike many of the newer books, this one does not have a particular slant other than the basic approach of grammatico-historical protestant interpretation. For those desiring to read Moises Silva and Walter C. Kaiser, Jr.'s book or Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Ramm must be read first. Remember Vince Lombardi's instructions: "gentlemen, this is a football." This is what Ramm does: "Gentlemen, this is hermeneutics."

Detailed, even-handed and informative

Bernard Ramm's book almost has to be viewed as a tale of three halves. The title is extremely apposite both in terms of the subject matter that is covered but also in the approach that is taken. The approach is very much one of an even handed survey of all methods of interpretation that can be classified as Protestant. In fact towards the end the author made mention of the `approach that we have been promoting' and I had to think quite hard as to which of the methods discussed was actually the one the author favored. It must also be said that whilst this book is fairly dry and scholarly in approach it is not overly technical. It abounds in references to others works and bibliographies but it does not require significant existing knowledge of the subject matter in hand.

The effect of this distinctive approach had a very different effect upon me for the three major themes that the book carried. The first third is a survey of the historic schools of interpretation. This spanned from the work of the early fathers through to modern philosophic schools. Some of the work on early interpretation I found historically interesting. The work on more modern schools will be less useful to someone avowedly conservative.

The second third is a very detailed and systematic analysis of conservative protestant hermeneutics. As a reference work the degree of distinction obtained is incredible. For example the section on `theologies verses theology' raised a concept I had known but never found a way to verbalize. However if viewed as a `how to' or motivational treatise it was painful in the extreme. This is probably a 'must read' for someone heavily in hermeneutics; however it is hard work.

The third section however was a look at typology, prophecy and parables. This section was simply excellent. Ramm's even handedness here shone brilliantly. He was able to point out flaws and inconsistencies in, for example, the literalists allowance of types that would almost certainly raise barriers if written by a different author. He essentially argues for a millennial and literal approach whilst simultaneously urging a greater appreciation of those passages that do require more spiritualized interpretation. His ability to clearly handle subtle issues requiring finesse make this one of the few texts I have read that have a chance of (slightly) changing someone's thinking on this subject.

One closing comment to make is that whilst this book was printed in 2004 that is the fifth printing of the third revision; the original is a nineteen fifties book. I generally have no problem with aged texts; however some of the sections on historical progression and trends definitely show their age.

A Classic in Hermeneutics!

In the world of biblical academia, there has been as assorted array of books that pivot on the topic as diverse as well as important as biblical hermeneutics. In that respect, only few books rise above the others and were hailed as classics in this field.

Written by a scholar in his own right, it touches on a wide array of subjects within the science of hermeneutics - ranging from a history of interpretation in Christendom (allegorical, literal, etc), the basic rules of Protestant interpretation, to the devotional and practical use of the Bible.
One unique feature of this book is that it touches on Protestant hermeneutics in an objective manner in which no theological position is sited or defended or even antagonize in any way. It basically teaches on the historical-grammatical method of exegeting the Word of God.
Surely a book that has rendered a valuable service to the Body of Christ in the past 50 years. Any avid Bible student will surely benefit from its insights!

Good improvements over 1st edition

The examples (cases) in the appendices to several of the chapters are a good addition, which improves on the 1st addition, moving me up from 3 stars to 4 starts. The new chapter on contingent consideration is well done, as is the expanded chapter on advanced valuation methods (real options are an important topic that has not received enough attention by the financial reporting community). I have two suggestions for further improvement. First financial instruments commonly used by non-financial companies are not covered. I'd suggest coverage of employee stock options and other awards. And, I'd suggest coverage of common derivatives used as hedges, such as interest rate swaps, forward sale/purchase contracts and futures. Second, I'd suggest the addition of an "auditing/documentation considerations" section at the end of each chapter. Even for company management, the auditing requirements are important, as the entity's financial staff needs to prepare appropriate documentation to support their conclusions.

About the Author

      Gerry Gavin is a speaker, life coach, medium, and creator of the very successful “Angels and Shamans” workshop, which puts participants in direct communication with their angels and guides. He has worked as a communication and empowerment specialist for more than 20 years, using a combination of modern therapeutic techniques and ancient shamanic practices to teach individuals how to listen to their body, mind, and spirit and help them reach their full potential.

      Gerry lives on a small horse farm in New Jersey, with Gail; David; their Australian shepherds, Wyatt and Annie; and about 30 other wonderful farm critters.

If you are interested in angel communication you will enjoy...

If you have an interest in angel communication and Divine messages then you will enjoy reading this book. It is a compilation of messages from an angel named "Margaret" whose words were received and recorded by the author Gerry Gavin.

I took the opportunity to download the e-book version and found it to be one of those books I could read in one sitting. As an avid reader of all things spiritual I was already well versed in many of the concepts such as "our thoughts create our reality", and "we are all one." It is nice, however, to have this all confirmed to be true by an angel.

However I did learn a few new things, such as ideas about the evolution of the human spirit (Margaret says the original human spirit was not the biblical Adam and Eve), and the chapter on human sexuality which explains why some souls are attracted to a different sexual orientation than their gender was born into.

Is this book for you? Here is one of the messages from Margaret to answer that: "Those who have come to this book have done so because you are seeking a way to make sense of where you are in your life and of the world in general....It is designed to help you to understand three things: who you are, where you came from, and how to take positive and loving control of where you are going!"

An angel reminds us

This book sounds to me like a love letter to humanity. A very timely one at that.
Margaret is Gerry Garvin's guardian angel, the loving entity who, for twenty years, has been helping him unravel life. The book is designed to help us understand three things: 1) who we are 2) where we came from and 3) how to take positive and loving control of where we're going.
What helped create the book is something Gerry discovered: automatic writing. This is a process where you begin to write a letter to a spiritual guide--God, an angel, or a deceased loved one. Says Gerry, "You write the letter and ask advice as though you are speaking to the most loving being you know, and then--and this is the hard part--you write a letter back to yourself. In this letter to yourself, you imagine that the answer is coming from someone who deeply loves you and only wants what is best for you, and you allow that to flow." In doing the process with Margaret for over two decades, Gerry received the message to write this book in 2010, one that benefits us all with the power of its truth.
In Messages From Margaret, the angel dispels the myths that deny our personal power, and also offers us techniques to lift our vibrations to "bring us the greatest joy as individuals and as a planet."
I recommend you read this book, but I will limit this blog post to the gems that resonated with me. Margaret explains our oneness thus. "There is no one grain of sand on a beach that is any more important than the other." The myth of separation that divides us is purely ego-driven. "In the eyes of the Creator, there is no one true religion. There is no one system that better honors him, if that system sets itself above another system." She also touches upon the significance of the time we live in. "You have navigated from the agrarian age to the industrial age to the information age, and we are about to enter another age--the age of consciousness!"
The tech-savvy angel's analogies brought on many a chuckle. Talking of the power of social media, she says, "You are building a worldwide community of change that begins with a single word--share!" Free will is compared to the process of "rebooting your computer and rewriting the program that is your life. You then have the ability to save the information you desire to save or to discard that which no longer serves your greater purpose."
Perhaps the most important message for our fear-driven society, she teaches us that there are only two overriding emotions; that all other emotions are offshoots of these two. They are Fear and Love. When we feel fear, we operate from the place of greed, jealousy, anger, resentment and doubt. When love is what we're feeling, we are in the space of joy, compassion, empathy, security, passion and other positive feelings.
The book also offers ideas to raise one's energetic vibrations. Prayer, meditation, aromatherapy oils, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), massage and Reiki help increase your vibrations.
My overall feeling after reading the book was one of profound peace and well-being, a deep knowing that we're never alone. Angels always surround and protect us. All we have to do is Ask, Believe and Receive.

Angelic Advice - Is Your Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Here's a test - answer this question, "Are you a glass half empty or glass half full person?" I have to admit that sometimes I'm a glass half empty person.

Phew, I passed the first test!

"Not so quick," Margaret says from the book, Messages from Margaret. I'm neither. I'm actually a "is it bottled or tap water type of person," she says.

Here's another test.

If I told you the book, Messages from Margaret was channeled from Margaret, an angel, through Gerry Gavin, an ordained interfaith minister, what would you say?

Many people I know would say, "Yea, right, and if you believe that I've got some swamp land in Florida for sale."

Can you relate to this? Think about it -- she's right. We have become such self-centered, separated, and ego-driven individuals who seem to think that we have all the answers. You know what -- we don't, but she might.

Margaret reminds us that we aren't half empty or half full people. She tells it like it is. Most of us are zombies walking around in a numb society who believe in very little about our creation, existence and our future -- our life's purpose.

Margaret's wish for us is about creating a glass runneth over effect. What a miracle that this little book, Messages from Margaret, was written in a timely manner to help us produce changes sorely needed in our lives today.

From a spiritual perspective, Margaret presented me with thought-provoking subject matter. It opened my eyes to the reality of that quiet little voice in my soul that has all the expansive knowledge I'll ever need to solve any problem I encounter.

After practicing her power principles (and there are over eight of them), our glasses are sure to run over with more than an abundant amount of love, peace, spirituality and hope for the future.

Don't bother reading this book if you aren't invested in embracing the energy of love, taking yourself to a higher realm, recognizing the depth of your soul or creating a magnetic way of thinking that can transform your life.

Until tomorrow, I remain a "glass runneth over" person as I send you my blessings and wishes for a prosperous and abundant life!

Lots of little nuggets of wisdom

You can read this book in less than an hour, but then you'll want to read it again. Each time thru, you'll go slower, because the little bits of wisdom and observation make you stop and think.......and reflect. I really enjoyed it.

An interesting take on the Anne Boleyn legend

I enjoyed this play, which focuses on religion in its portrayal of Anne Boleyn. Surprisingly, Howard Brenton's focus is that Anne was a hardcore Protestant, and that the very foundation of her relationship with Henry VIII was based on her desire for religious reform. While entertaining, this theory seemed a bit out there to me, but I enjoyed reading this take on what is usually a very repetitive story about lust and power. The character of Anne Boleyn is portrayed as being incredibly sympathetic...perhaps too much so. Still, it's a refreshing interpretation of the story. I hope to see a staged version one day.

It's a pretty run-of-the-mill Boleyn story

I managed to wrestle a good monologue out of it. Despite updated language and expressions, Anne Boleyn is average. There are so many fascinating aspects of this woman's life that I keep waiting to see materialize in Play form, however for some reason she always seems to become a bit soft. Anyway, it's a good read. Go ahead and order it.

I enjoyed reading it. It was refreshing to read a story about Anne Boleyn that was both funny and serious. I loved the ending.
