Not for Kindle
By Eric Ernesto
I dont own the hardcopy but i got this for my recently bought Kindle and the version for the Kindle, SUCKS!!! It was a complete waste of money since I could not even read the tables that appear in a lighter gray shade. I dont see the point in changing the color. The tables that exists in every chapter of the books are almost unreadable and UNBEARABLE. You will need a magnifying glass to be able to read the table because the fonts dont change even if you change the actual font on the kindle. Then, there are several chapters at the end of the book that are only available in the CD, which one could have availed with a hard copy of the book.

From what I could read from the book, the "marlene moments" of the book were good since they help one remember certain important notes. But, I thought the bought was too simple and too basic that you could get a better understanding in your medical surgical book.

Excellent Study Guide
By Renita Whitecrane
The Hurst Pathophysiology Review has been a great help in studying for my finals. I have taken the NCLEX-RN and have gone on to further my education. This book is helping me get through a very difficult course. A little side note, I took an NCLEX review by Marlene Hurst, and loved it. That is the main reason I purchased this product, the other reason was I needed an easy to understand pathophysiology guide. I found the help I was looking for in this book.

Trust me, if you want to understand Patho, get this book!

The Book of Lists: The Original Compendium of Curious Information, by David Wallechinsky, Amy D. Wallace, Ira Basen, Jane Farrow

A new edition of the classic bestseller from the original authors, with additional material specifically prepared for Canadian readers by long-time This Morning CBC producer, Ira Basen, and Jane Farrow, the author of Wanted Words.

In 1977, a publishing sensation was born. The Book of Lists, the first and best compendium of facts weirder than fiction, was published. Filled with intriguing information and must-talk-about trivia it has spawned many imitators — but none as addictive or successful.

For nearly three decades since, the editors have been researching curious facts, unusual statistics and the incredible stories behind them. Now the most entertaining and informative of these have been brought together in a long-awaited, thoroughly up-to-date new edition that is also the first Canadian edition. Ira Basen and Jane Farrow have augmented the existing lists with fascinating homegrown material, and compiled lists specifically of relevance to Canadian readers.

So if you’ve always wanted to find out how porcupines really mate, how comedy can kill and — that most essential piece of knowledge — how long the longest recorded nose was, this is the book for you. With contributions from a variety of celebrities and experts including Margaret Atwood, Mike Myers, Michael Ondaatje, Dave Eggers, Phillip Pullman and Charlotte Gray, this anthology has something for everyone — and more than you ever suspected you wanted to know.

Introduction

As Oscar Wilde observed, the only sin is to be bored. We believe it is an equal sin to be boring, and if the great wit was correct, then the authors and millions of Book of Lists readers are quite unblemished by sin: for we place a high value on curiosity.

The original 1977 volume of The Book of Lists, and its all-new sequels, inspired nearly 200 imitation volumes. These have included books of lists about movies, rock ‘n’ roll, Judaism, the Bible, general sports, and countless other subjects. The books spawned games, toilet paper with lists on it, CD-ROMs, calendars and television shows. We had no idea that The Book of Lists would become a bestseller, let alone a phenomenon. We thought we were just having fun.

The Book of Lists rose to number 1 on the bestseller lists, and was published all over the world. Young readers wrote to tell us they’d bought our book for fun, and were using it to spice up their schoolwork. Older readers locked themselves in bathrooms, curled up in bed, took the book to parties and demanded more editions. We invited their contributions, which came pouring in, and we featured many of them in the editions that followed.

Although we are pleased to have popularised a genre that so many people enjoy, we do not pretend to have been its founders. That honour goes to the Reverend Nathaniel Wanley, author of Wonders of the Little World, a book of lists first published in 1678. We didn’t know about the Reverend Wanley when we wrote our own Book of Lists, but a glance through his table of contents shows striking similarities: “Of such People and Nations as have been scourged and afflicted by small and contemptible things,” “Of such as having been extremely Wild, and Prodigal, or Debauched in their Youth, have afterwards proved excellent Persons,” “Of such as have been seized with an extraordinary joy, at what hath followed there-upon.”

The trend never died down, and in recent years has had a dazzling renaissance. We appear to live in an age in which the volume of information available to us is far too overwhelming for our minds to process. The everyday lists we all make are a balm to a cluttered mind; list-making puts things in order, it clarifies, it helps coax truth from the cracks of the universe, and it invites our favourite question: “What if . . . ?”

In the present volume, we have updated our readers’ favourite lists, prepared an array of new material, and included lists from a wide variety of notables and celebrities. We owe much of the inspiration for this volume to our father, Irving Wallace, who always hoped we’d continue to compile new editions. Whenever possible, we have concentrated on lists that cause readers to laugh out loud, gasp, shake their heads in wonder, or call out “Wait until you hear this!” To quote Mark Twain’s introduction to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: “Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot.”

INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
FROM IRA BASEN AND JANE FARROW

It was hard not to feel intimidated about joining forces with the Wallace and Wallechinsky list machine. The first Book of Lists, by David, Amy and their father, Irving, was brilliant. David and Amy have subsequently spent several decades filing away obscure pieces of information to be included in future books of lists. And here we were, two CBC radio producers, whose brains gear more towards finding interesting people to talk to on the radio than to trying to find a Canadian who had died laughing.

Sometimes we got lucky. We hadn’t really expected to be able to add Canadian content to a list of “famous events that happened in the bathtub,” until we stumbled across the fact that former prime minister R.B. Bennett had died in his. It also turns out that you can actually learn a few things about the differences between Canada and the United States by working on a book of lists such as this. We realized that our showbiz celebrity culture is not nearly as developed as theirs; our stars aren’t larger than life. We could find no examples of a public kiss that equalled the buzz created by Britney and Madonna, or scenes left out of Canadian films that could rise to the level of the lost production number from The Wizard of Oz. So we started looking in different places. Our mobsters don’t have nicknames as colourful as their American counterparts, but our athletes do. And while the American version of the book had a list of “15 Actors Who Became Politicians,” we flipped it around to suit our needs: “12 Canadian Sports Heroes Who Became Politicians.” Finally, we couldn’t find an instance of Canadians rioting after a trial verdict, but we had no trouble finding fans going wild after Stanley Cup games and rock concerts.

We want to thank our “experts” who took us deep into their areas of specialization to come up with some truly wonderful lists. Two whose names are not attached to their lists are Robert Williams, the Director of the Centre for Election Studies at the University of Waterloo, who contributed a list on the highs and lows of Canadian elections, and our CBC buddy Nick Purdon who, luckily for us, happens to have a fascination with wilderness expeditions that ended in disaster. We are grateful for the assistance of the brilliant and patient library staff at the CBC and the University of Toronto libraries. We also want to thank some close friends and colleagues who generously indulged our needling inquiries about Canadian law (Debra Parkes and Pam Shime), rowdy rock fans (Greig Dymond) and all things environmental (Lorraine Johnson).

Our trusted editor, Michael Schellenberg, did a wonderful job of keeping us focused and motivated. He could be depended on for encouraging words at the right moment, and more importantly, came through with a few steak dinners at critical junctures. Most of all, we thank Michael for being organized, driven and infallible – in other words, the editorial equivalent of a border collie. Thanks to Kate Cassaday for compiling the first round of the manuscript; our copy editor, Sue Sumeraj, for sticking to the facts and crossing the t’s; Deirdre Molina, Knopf Canada’s capable managing editor, for grace under pressure; Martha Magor, for her able assistance; Bao-Nghi Nhan, our intrepid photo researcher; and finally, the always elegant executive publisher Louise Dennys, for giving us a shot at the big time.

Jane would like to single out her own guiding light, Sophie Hackett, for all the love and support on the home front, and Ira would like to acknowledge the names on his most important list: Lynn, Joanna, Andrea, Rochelle and Nathaniel.

We spent many hours in libraries and on the Internet researching these lists, knowing all the while that our greatest resource will ultimately be you, the reader. That’s why we really are looking forward to hearing from you, even if your letters begin “I can’t believe you missed . . .” So if you know about a cat who covered hundreds of miles to come home, or a noteworthy Canadian who hated his or her portrait, or a famously naked Canadian woman, please get in touch. That’s why they invented second editions.

Superfly: The Jimmy Snuka Story, by Jimmy Snuka, Jon Chattman

Focusing on the superstar who single-handedly influenced the development of sports entertainment, this autobiography highlights the legacy of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) icon Jimmy Snuka. The wrestler’s legendary top-rope maneuvers, innovative high-flying style, and unprecedented aerial ability made him the most popular competitor in WWE. This fascinating account relates how a native of the Fiji Islands was at the center of two of wrestling’s most talked-about moments: the night Snuka leapt from the top of the 15-foot cage—only to miss his opponent and consequently lose the match—and the night Rowdy Roddy Piper smashed a coconut over Snuka’s head during a segment of Piper’s Pit in 1984. Exposing the amazing life of this WWE Hall of Fame member in detail, this record presents the ups and downs of a wrestler who grew to be a key figure in the expansion of the company and all professional wrestling.

Biography? I don't think so.
By Lorraine Salome
This book was written in bad Snuka lingo.
IF you know anything about this guy you will spot all the contradictions and some of it is just absurd.
The chapter about the mysterious death of Nancy Argentino is total fiction if you look into the old newspaper reports and other
articles you will see the police reports that are non-fiction and actual fact and not at all even close to the stories Snuka is telling about these incidents. The whole book was close to made up bad wrestling hype.
There were so many blurbs from other people popping up in every chapter it was distracting.
What happened here? Did the authors get mixed up between the reality a true biography has and this book that read like a half truthful
fictional self promotion?
If you have this book burn it and move on.

Superfly in his own words, but had mixed feelings
By Conrad Hoss
Hey brudda,

The bottom line is that Jimmy Snuka is a free spirit and lives in the moment. His memory is a little fuzzy, brudda, but you know how it is when you sleep with 10,000 women, snort coke, eat steroids (no needles), smoke pot, island plants, cigarettes, and am an alcoholic.

If you grew up watching the Superfly like I did, brudda, you will learn why Jimmy left the WWF and about his family. You see the world through Jimmy's eyes, brudda.

After you read Superfly you will never think about Buddy Rogers, Hulk Hogan, or Jimmy Snuka the same, brudda. But Jimmy loves everyone and the bad stuff is water under the bridge, brudda.

I gotta be honest with you brudda, I had mixed feelings about this book. You see I used to love the Superfly in the 1980s. And when he was in the WWF in the 1990s I hated when he was a jobber, brudda. I saw the Superfly at an indy show, brudda, and he was gentle, nice, and didn't charge me for a photo and autograph, brudda, even when his handler wanted me to. That's class, brudda.

But the sex, drugs, alcohol, family abuse, and blaming the McMahons for his aborted pushes even though he no-showed, was stoned, and was 40 and 50 was too much for my mind to take. Superfly blew my mind, brudda. That's why I had to give it 3 stars, brudda. I wanted to give it 5, but Superfly is a man of too many contradictions, brudda. I have compassion, brudda, but it's too much to swallow, brudda.

Not her best, but still pleasant to read
By Rebecca
I've read quite a few fantastic books by this author and a few that were so-so. This one falls into the latter category, mainly because the interaction between the H/h was not believable. There were too many misunderstandings between them, and at the times that they were feeling charitable towards each other, they spent most of their time on sappy dialogue.

All that said, even when Ranstrom is not at her best, she still knows how to write. Her prose is quite nice, not too flowery, with careful attention to grammar and conventions, so it's always pleasant to spend a few hundred pages with her. Check out the other books in this series. I've reviewed most of them, and I've tried to point out which are the strongest. You might want to start with one of those instead and then come back to this one just to see what happens to these characters.

From Publishers Weekly
Tennessee Williams's 1947 masterpiece took Broadway by storm and made the brooding Marlon Brando a star. Blanche DuBois's last line, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers," has become a cliché, but Staggs (All About All About Eve; Close-Up on Sunset Boulevard) argues that the whole play is a seminal work, which still "seduces with its disordered exoticism and its power to engulf." He has crafted an entertaining behind-the-scenes narrative of both the play and the film—from Williams's early drafts to the film's battles with Hollywood censors. Rather than dwell on academic interpretations of Streetcar, Staggs takes a more personal tack. He profiles everyone from director Elia Kazan to Jessica Tandy (Broadway's Blanche) as well as backstage personnel. The result is a comprehensive minihistory of 20th-century American stage and screen. And he doesn't stint on tabloid juice, either, noting that both Vivien Leigh and Kazan had voracious sexual appetites. He also incorporates playful trivia, such as a Jeopardy!-style quiz on actresses who've played Blanche. The inclusion of such lighthearted information balances Staggs's absorbing account of the creation of and continued fascination with this American classic. Photos.

"Opinionated, revealing, constantly entertaining account of the birth and growth of Tennessee Williams's most famous play." --Kirkus Reviews

"A comprehensive minihistory of 20th-century American stage and screen and [Staggs] doesn't skimp on tabloid juice." --Publishers Weekly "With his infectious devotion to "Streetcar," Staggs surely will motivate many to revist the play and watch the film." --Los Angeles Times "as loquacious and overripe as Blanche herself and as hard to resist." --Washington Post

From the Back Cover
“WHEN BLANCHE MET BRANDO: The Scandalous Story of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ promises something salacious but delivers something better…a witty, insightful probe of Tennessee Williams’ most famous play in all its variations.”—The Dallas Morning News

The play launched Marlon Brando’s career, and the movie shot his star into the stratosphere.  The film also redefined Vivien Leigh as another kind of Southern belle: Blanche as Scarlett on the skids.  And the movie as modern audiences know it barely escaped the unforgiving knife of censorship. “A Streetcar Named Desire” is more than a classic piece of American art—it’s a daring and raw masterpiece as alive with meaning today as it was when first performed in 1947.

Witty, rich with detail and exuberantly opinionated, WHEN BLANCHE MET BRANDO is the full behind-the-scenes story of “A Streetcar Named Desire.”  Moving from the opening of Tennessee Williams’ groundbreaking play and the scandalized audiences it left on Broadway to its London debut to Elia Kazan’s exceptional movie version, Staggs illuminates “Streetcar’s” surprising complexities and the powerhouse personalities behind them.

“Staggs’ book is an excellent companion piece, giving a fine and often funny account of the many difficulties Williams’ story faced on the way to becoming history.”—Reuters

Facts filtered through opinion...
By Todd E. Babcock
The title of this book is by no means deceiving in it's pulp/tabloid style. The author, while having done much research, revels in his own streaming opinions about Williams, Brando, 'Streetcar' and more importantly, what he 'thinks' happened based on pure speculation. Theres no doubt the simple facts of this production and its titan creators is enough to be compelling material but I often found some of the belittling commentary irritating.

An entire paragraph on Brando's "bubble butt" or describing LAST TANGO IN PARIS as "limp-dick cinema" should give the reader some idea of the level of cattiness married to erudition you have here. If you are looking for less of a 'personal' contribution from the author I would recommend Donald Spoto's book on Williams and Peter Manso's on Brando (the latter cited repeatedly in this book).

If you are simply looking for an information-laden, STAR magazine read for the summer...you've come to the right place. Or, if you're like me, you want any kernal of wisdom not already covered in other tomes (i.e. Kazan's A LIFE) you may turn over a few stones between the speculation and hetero-phobic opinions.

What about the other Stanleys?
By hooligan
I enjoyed Sam Staggs' book about "Streetcar!" However, I didn't find it as thorough as his other books about "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard." There were plenty of details about the Brando-Tandy & Brando-Leigh versions of "Streetcar," but hardly a mention of the Ralph Meeker and Anthony Quinn/Uta Hagen productions of "Streetcar...!" There was one humourous mention of Judith Evelyn as Blanche, but I would have been more interested in hearing about these two versions rather than all the other operatic and various foreign productions of "Streetcar"!

Entertaining - but not more and not always
By Leser
Like other reviewers, I was delighted to find a book dedicated to the fabulous "Streetcar named Desire". The book doubtlessly is entertaining, at least most of the time. The style is chatty, the author indulges in rumors, anecdotes and gossip, never hesitating to give a highly subjective viewpoint. As he doesn't pretend to be objective, I didn't mind too much, though I would have preferred more information and less gossip. Still, most of it was amusing to read. I don't know much about Brando and the author's chit-chatty information about him made Brando come to life for me. - Sometimes, I was a bit lost when the author seemed to forget that not everybody is as familiar with all Hollywood personalities or wannabee personalities. His overly familiar way of talking about people I never heard of, the lack of at least one or two sentences of background information, made some passages unclear to me.

What I thoroughly enjoyed were the interpretations of the play and its characters, some by the author himself, some quoted from others. I would have liked more of this. Also, his description of mimic and camera work during the first scene of the movie was very perceptive. I watched this scene right afterwards and did see it with different eyes. Again, more of that would have been great. Those - in my opinion - were the best parts of the book.

As mentioned by another reviewer, the information about Vivien Leigh and her being affected by playing Blanche was highly insufficient. It is such a fascinating topic and one that would have deserved more coverage. I was disappointed by the lacklustre handling of this topic. Also, less rehashed gossip and more information would have improved the chapter on Vivien Leigh tremendously.

Generally, I was often surprised - and disappointed - by the author's choice of what to cover in great detail and what to cover only cursorily. I didn't need to know every memo, phone call and detail of the preproduction phase. Many of the actor biographies were extremely boring. If someone did nothing interesting apart from having a tiny part in Streetcar named Desire, I don't want to read about that person's life in detail. The chapter on several actresses who played Blanche or could have played Blanche was tedious. The author gives descriptions of several actresses and how they got to play Blanche. Most of the time, these descriptions weren't interesting, they didn't contain any additional information except for "XY always wanted to play Blanche and then played her in XY theatre on this date." This doesn't make good reading. It could have been limited to the few interesting background stories.

Sometimes, the writing seemed utterly unstructured. Anecdotes are written down without a combining element, without any attempt to get some nice writing style into them. Three sentences about a Karl Malden anecdote are written at the end of a one-page paragraph with Brando anecdotes, then a new paragraph is started. The Karl Malden anecdote is out of place and one wonders whether nobody edited this book. Small things like this appear repeatedly, making for uninspired writing. This contrasts with several other chapters, giving the impression that the author didn't care about all of his topics.

So, in total, this book is a mixture of highly entertaining, at times witty observations and bland listings of uninteresting facts or gossip. It did give me new information about the play, the movie and some of the actors, but in my opinion it suffers too many weaknesses to be recommendable.

The Erotic Mind: Unlocking the Inner Sources of Passion and Fulfillment, by Jack Morin

Challenging accepted theories about what makes for terrific sex, The Erotic Mind is a breakthrough exploration of the least understood dimensions of human sexuality—the psychology of desire, arousal, and fulfillment. Nationally known sex therapist Dr. Jack Morin offers a bold new perspective that celebrates the joys of Eros without denying its risks.

Based on an in-depth analysis of over 1,000 provocative stories of peak sexual experiences, The Erotic Mind offers clear, accessible guidance on how anyone can utilize his or her own peak encounters and fantasies as powerful tools of self-discovery.

The Erotic Mind explains the many paradoxes of erotic life, such as: why we're most excited when we must overcome obstacles; how anxiety, guilt, and anger—generally thought to have a negative impact on sexual arousal—often turn out to be aphrodisiacs; how we use unresolved issues from our early lives to intensify passion; and why the best sex is dynamic and unpredictable, rather than static and safe.

These and other insights, combined with concrete suggestions for increasing our enjoyment, overcoming our problems, and revitalizing our relationships, will change forever the way we think about our eroticism.

From Publishers Weekly
Too many sex therapists focus only on the removal of inhibitions, thus ignoring the complex and paradoxical sources of passion, declares San Francisco-area psychotherapist Morin in this intriguing, insightful mix of analysis, anecdote and advice. Drawing on 351 respondents, straight and gay, who discussed their erotic lives with him, Morin has developed an "erotic equation": attraction plus obstacles leads to excitement. This formula, he avers, is neither tidy nor predictable. He suggests that sexual obstacles in one's youth create lifelong scripts for arousal, while a range of feelings?including exuberance, anxiety and anger?can intensify arousal. Morin advises readers to confront the unresolved feelings that produce "troublesome turn-ons" and offers a seven-step guide to modifying or expanding one's erotic patterns. In long-term relationships, Morin observes, passion is hardly guaranteed; he advises couples to recognize and address the interactive tension between intimacy and sexual desire. $35,000 marketing campaign; author tour.

From Library Journal
Unlike most authors who focus simply on physiological fulfillment, sex therapist and psychotherapist Morin asserts that it is our erotic psyches that require detailed examination. More specifically, he claims that understanding our peak sexual experiences and fantasies offers the greatest opportunity for self-discovery and, thus, revitalized sexual experiences. Based on a groundbreaking, in-depth study of more than 1000 provocative confessional stories, Morin's theories are supported here by excerpts and analysis. His new perspective offers insight into the many paradoxes of erotic life, such as how anxiety, guilt, and anger?generally thought to have a negative impact on sexual arousal?often turn out to be aphrodisiacs and why the best sex is dynamic and risky rather than static and safe. While this work is written in a jargon-free language for a broad appeal, its more detailed sexual passages may be a concern in certain environments. Nevertheless, Morin's thought-provoking book is essential for all human sexuality collections.?David R. Johnson, Arnold LeDoux Lib., Louisiana State Univ., Eunice

Positive Review by a Psychologist
By David H. Peterzell PhD PhD
In order to be licensed to practice clinical psychology in California, it is necessary to take a seminar on human sexuality. That's how I first heard about this book. The organizer believed that this is the foremost text on human sexuality and sex therapy, and now I can see why...
This is powerful, valuable stuff. Here's what makes it good:
1. I believe that Morin's landmark contribution is his "paradoxical perspective on eroticism." It challenges a variety of widely-accepted theories about attraction and great sex. As Morin states, "this new paradigm acknowledges and embraces the contradictory, dual-edged nature of erotic life. It recognizes that anything that inhibits arousal-including anxiety or guilt-can, under different circumstances, amplify it." The paradoxical view is at the heart of what makes this book special. It isn't just some scholarly, cerebral view, but rather a theory with profound experiential/practical significance. For instance, as one more fully experiences the profoundest subjective erotic rewards, one also experiences more strongly the tension between passion and fulfillment.
2. The book unearths readers' own sexual desires and sexual behaviors (or "Core Erotic Themes"), using unique self-assessment tools. Lots of people (including me) feel that this book really helps them see for the first time their sexual essence, which underlies their perplexing historical feelings and behaviors. Somehow, the revelations are more relieving than shocking. As you get to the bottom of what really turns you on within Morin's system, the world may look different! Of course, there's also great value in determining what makes your partner (or potential partner) click.
3. The book provides concrete tools for understanding and achieving peak eroticism ("emotional aphrodisiacs"). These include ways to increase sexual and orgasmic intensity, reduce inhibitions, improve validation received and given, and transcend personal boundaries. Additionally, it provides ways to address "troublesome turn-ons" which lead to destructive, repetitive behaviors.
4.Morin clarifies how to intensify desire and arousal in oneself and others. Much of the work is paradoxical, and explores eroticism in ways not available elsewhere. Moreover, it provides ways to evaluate sexual well-being from the "paradoxical" perspective ("signposts to erotic health")
5. It provides plenty revealing stories of peak sexual experiences. These stories improve understanding, but more importantly detoxify stigma, anxiety, guilt, anger and avoidance. Most people will find their doppelgangers here...
6. The author is a well established sex therapist, researcher, and psychotherapist.
If I have any criticism, it is that the book becomes repetetive in places. So what?

A must read for anyone across the board

I bought this book because of some issues that I wanted to understand and resolve in my relationship (mostly waning desire.) This is the first book that I've read that doesn't just give some corny advice on behavior change (spend more time together, touch eachother more, etc.) This book really gets at the heart of where our desires come from, how we are influenced by our early erotic thoughts and how this knowledge can help us overcome troublesome issues. The other wonderful thing this book did for me was explain how waning desire is normal and may not signal the end of your relationship. The self assessment tool was also very helpful, as was the non-judgmental analysis of the erotic fantasies of those who were surveyed for the book. It is not smutty and not too clinical in it's approach, just very practical. This is the first book that I feel my spouse will actually read and derive some benefit from. I am recommending it to everyone I know that wants to get in better touch with their sexuality or just improve their relationships in general.

This book has changed my life.
By Mel F. Louis
I don't know how to contact Jack Morin, so I will use this review to say "Thank You" for writing this book.
This book has helped me "unlock", reveal to myself and finally...to understand *why* I have behaved the way I have sexually, and why I have made so many of the other "non-sexual" choices I have made in my life (and I have been searching for these answers for most of my adult life).
His thoughtful approach to non self-judgemental exploration, and his practical and conscientous suggestions for overcoming (or accepting) the most vexing facets of your sexual being make for a book that to my knowledge, has no equal.
I can't believe there is anyone who wouldn't be transformed by careful reading of this book, and its value only increases when you are able to pass it on to someone you care about.
If your heart weighs heavy with the choices you have made, and you "question" why you desire the things, people and situations that you do...you must read this book.
This is one of 5 or 6 books I will never be without.

from TILL DEATH DO US PART

“That guy’s staring at you again, April.”

“April Lancaster didn’t need Kelli to tell her that the boy on the far side of the hospital’s patient rec room was looking at her. She could almost feel his gaze. She had been in the hospital for two days and he’d been stealing glances at her every time she ventured out of her room. “Ignore him,” April whispered to Kelli. “I do.”

“But why? He’s cute. Even if he is too skinny for my taste.”

“This isn’t a social club, Kelli. It’s a hospital. I didn’t come here to meet guys.”

“Well, I say why let a good opportunity slip away?”

April shook her head. “You’re impossible.”

Her best friend grinned. “I’m only trying to cheer you up. Take your mind off this whole thing. And if you meet a cute guy in the bargain, then what’s the harm?”

April pointedly twisted in the lounge chair so that her back was to the boy. She didn’t want to be stared at, and she certainly didn’t want to meet some guy who was sick. She figured he had to be sick; why else would he be a patient in this huge New York City medical complex?

Kelli interrupted her thoughts. “What is going on with you? Medically, I mean. When can you leave?”

The last thing April wanted to do was dwell on the frightening possibilities as to why she was in the hospital. “I’m only here for testing,” she said. “I’m sure I’ll be out by the end of the week.”

“But by then spring break will be over. We leave tomorrow, and the weatherman said an inch of fresh powder is falling in Vermont as we speak. This might be the last chance for a ski trip this year.”

April and her friends had been planning the trip for weeks. It was supposed to be part of her birthday present. And since it was their senior year, it would be their final spring break together as a group. “I can’t help it,” she said gloomily. “Even if my doctor releases me earlier, my parents won’t let me go.”

“Why not?”

April didn’t want to say. Not while there was so much speculation about the origins of her numbing headaches. The headaches had built in intensity for the past several months, causing her to get dizzy, even sick to her stomach. When she’d passed out from the pain in school two days earlier, her parents had hustled her out of their Long Island community and into a hospital in the city. The headaches could still be nothing.

Or they could be the other thing. The “thing” she had decided not to discuss with Kelli. “Oh, you know my parents. They fall to pieces if I have a hangnail. Besides, Dad won’t let me drive from New York to Vermont by myself.”

Kelli chewed her bottom lip. “I could wait till you’re released. Then you and I could drive up together.”

“No way.” April shook her head. “Kelli, I appreciate it, but you go on with the others.”

Kelli slumped in her chair, crossed her arms, and pouted. “It won’t be the same without you there. This is our last spring break together.“’

April sighed, feeling disappointed too. “Maybe we can do something together our first spring break from college next year.”

“Fat chance. We’ll all be scattered to the ends of the earth.”

“I’m sorry,” April said softly, her eyes filling with tears.

Kelli scooted forward and seized April’s hands. “Don’t cry. I’m such a jerk for making you feel worse than you already do. Tell you what, we’ll go to the shore this summer when all this is behind you. You’ve always liked the beach better than the ski slopes anyway. I’ll talk to the others while we’re away and devise a plan. What do you say?”

“Okay. Maybe we can go right after graduation, before we have to pack up for college.” April did love the beach, the rolling ocean waves, the warm sand and bright sun. “Thanks for thinking of it, Kelli. You’re a real friend.”

Kelli beamed her a smile. “We’ll call you from the ski lodge.”

April nodded. “Don’t break a leg.”

Suddenly a male voice burst upon the two girls in the lounge. “There you are, April.”

April looked up to see Chris Albright, the senior captain of their high-school soccer team. They’d been dating for a few months, ever since Christmas, but she hadn’t expected him to pop into the hospital the day before spring break. She was glad she’d taken the time to put on her sweats and wasn’t wearing a hospital gown.

“I couldn’t find you in your room,” Chris continued. “One of the nurses told me to check in here. You feeling better?”

Chris had caught her when she’d fainted in English class. Literally.

“Nothing to report,” she said. He straddled the arm of her chair and took her hand in his. From the comer of her eye, April saw the patient who’d been ogling her lean forward. She turned her full attention to Chris. “I didn’t think I’d see you until after the break.”

“I can’t go off and leave my girlfriend holed up in the hospital.”

Kelli who was out of Chris’s line of vision, did an exaggerated swoon that made April giggle. Chris was the catch of their school. April was nuts about him, but she tried not to show it. Clingy girlfriends were a turnoff.

“What’s so funny?” Chris asked.

“Nothing. I’m just glad to see you.” She laced her fingers through his.

“What’s up, Kelli?” Chris asked.

“I came to say goodbye too,” Kelli told him. “Actually I was trying to persuade April to sneak away with me and leave her doctor a note about coming back after spring break.”

“Makes sense to me,” Chris said. “Have they told you anything yet?”

April told Chris what she’d told Kelli. Once again she omitted the information that she didn’t want anyone to know. The headaches can’t be related, she told herself. “So, I guess I’m stuck here until they complete all the tests,” she finished aloud.

from FOR BETTER, FOR WORSE, FOREVER

At the top of the hill, a girl, her red hair gleaming in the sun, stood gazing out at the sea. As she lifted her eyes skyward, she turned and spun in a circle, her arms flung out straight and wide.

She stopped spinning, reached into the pocket of her shorts, and took out a red balloon. She put it to her lips and blew, filling it up so that it rounded out. She tied it off, then reached back into her pocket and pulled out a long thin yellow ribbon. She tied one end securely to the balloon’s knotted tail.

As a balmy breeze blew from the sea, she unleashed the ribbon and the balloon flew upward. She shielded her eyes from the glare of the sun and watched as the air current
caught the balloon and pulled it so that it rose until it became a tiny red dot lost against the endless blue sky.

Brandon Benedict couldn’t believe what he was seeing. A girl—a beautiful girl—with hair so fiery red that it glistened in the sun like sparks from a fire stood shielding her eyes as a red balloon sailed upward into the vibrant blue sky high above the island of St. Croix.

He’d gone hiking alone in the green hills. What an odd thing to discover. She hadn’t seen him, so he stayed behind some bushes, out of her line of vision. She appeared to be conducting a private ritual.

Brandon decided not to intrude, but when his heel crushed a dry branch, its loud crack made the girl whirl and catch sight of him. He heard her gasp, then shout, “What do you want?” Her fists were clenched and he thought that she might strike him.

“Nothing.“’

“Why are you spying on me?”

“I wasn’t spying.” Her angry gaze bore into him, and he felt defensive.

“Why are you up here?”

He felt his anger rise as he replied, “It’s a free country, you know. I was just out hiking. Sorry if I ruined your day.”

Now she looked less angry, more embarrassed. “I thought I was alone.”

“And now you will be.” He turned and started back down the hill.

“Wait!” she called after him. Her voice was gentler now. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell at you. You just surprised me, that’s all.”

His irritation vanished and he turned back to her. Her blue eyes were heavy with sadness. He felt it like an electric current. He recognized that sadness. Even now, he could feel the darkness of his own pain, but he shook it off as he smiled. “I’m Brandon Benedict. I live on St. Croix. I hike up in these hills a lot. I had no idea anyone was up here. I didn’t mean to scare you.”

“My parents have rented that house.” She pointed and he saw the white barrel tile of a roof below. “I’m April Lancaster.”

“You’re renting the Steiner place? I’ve grown up here. I know most every house and its owners on this side of the island,” he explained. “The Steiners were regulars at the Buccaneer Golf Course until Mr. Steiner had a heart attack. They moved back to the States. I work at the Buccaneer. After school and during summers, I mean. But I guess I’m telling you more than you probably want to know.”

She offered a tentative smile. It pleased him immensely. “It’s okay. Actually, we’ve been here three weeks and I haven’t met a soul.”

“You’re kidding! You’re so pretty. I—I mean, all you have to do to meet people around here is show up in Christiansted.” He waved in the general direction of St. Croix’s largest city. “There’s nightlife down there.”

The veil dropped over her eyes again. “I’m not into partying.”

He itched to know what would make such a pretty girl so sad and isolated. “Everything around here is low-key. Even our parties. Where did you come from, anyway?”

“New York. Long Island, actually.”

“How long will you be staying?”

She shrugged. “As long as it takes.”

“As long as what takes?”

“Forget it,” she answered quickly, then added, “we don’t have a time limit on our visit. Maybe until the weather turns horrible.”

Totally Magical...brought me to tears....

I first began reading LM's books a few days ago, and before I know it, I'm hogging every single one of her books I can find from the library!!!!! I'm SOOOOOO into her books that my parents think I should hold down on the reading and do a little more of what they call "outdoor activities." Well, the two novels in this book touched my heart and brought me to a whole new meaning of life. I realized how special I was to not have a disease or illness, that I'm lucky to be in great health. All of LM's books showed me that, but of all her books, this one I found full of love and beauty. April Lancaster found her true love, Mark, and won't let go of him now that they're together. He showed her how to fight for life and from death and to always find hope. But when Mark has a terrible accident, April becomes all alone. Full of grief, she decides to leave for a little vacation spot to keep her mind off Mark's death, where she meets Brandon. I won't say anymore; you'll just have to find out what happens when you read this book! I really love this book and treasure it as my own. Once I finished this book, I couldn't stop my eyes from weeping. It was so sad, yet full of happiness. Please read these heartwarming stories and I guarantee, You'll Be Very Amazed as if you were just given a Gift From God.
