Hobbled online reference.

Elsevier, in collaboration with Inkling, has crippled online access to this reference. Until February, 2014, Elsevier's ExpertConsultBook online reference books have been fantastic - easy to navigate, intuitive to search across your titles, and efficient to use. Elsevier has shut that down and replaced it with Inkling's clumsy e-book reader. Easy to read. Not easy to use as online reference to find answers to particular diagnostic problems.

With ExpertConsult/Inkling you can no longer search across your purchased books at one go. You have to open and search within each book individually. Open your online book and you get three columns: a navigation column with list of chapters, a reading column, and a notes column (wasting valuable screen space). You have to click the search icon to get a text entry box. Search results then replace the index in the navigation column, 10 at a time, 4-5 visible on a typical computer screen. To review your search results you have to scroll down through the first 10, then click next, then scroll down through the next 10, then click next, ten at a time. The contexts of individual search results are obscure. It shows a little text where your search term appears, but not which chapter or section it is in. Figures (often lots of them) are included in your results list. Individual search results are headed with figure number (not caption, not chapter or section heading) or sub-section titles. Even in the reading pane you can't see chapter and section titles, so you don't know what part of the book you're in. You are limited to linear access through the book - with links to previous and next sections at the top and bottom of the reading pane. To get to the next sub-section you have to scroll down to the bottom of the current sub-section. In order to navigate the index to different chapters or sections you have to exit your search results to get back the index pane.

A strong pick for any world fiction collection

Much of Africa has been slower to join the world in the modern age, but it still blooms none the less. "News from Home" is a collection of short stories from Sefi Atta, a Nigerian writer with much support from her contemporaries. Through her stories, she shows the condition of her people in an emerging society that has recently been granted the freedoms of the world and are stuck between modernization and the traditions of Nigeria. Thoughtful and insightful, "News from Home" is a strong pick for any world fiction collection.

Interpretations of the near sacrifice story in Genesis 22 and lessons people can learn from it

Genesis 22's well-known story narrates how God tested the patriarch Abraham to determine whether he was willing to go so far as to even slaughter his beloved son Isaac if God instructed him to do so. Abraham passes the test. He is not only willing to sacrifice Isaac, but had to be stopped by an angel shouting at him from heaven.

The episode could be understood like the tale of Jacob dreaming about angels ascending and descending a ladder with God at the ladders top when he was forced to abandon his home and was obviously concerned and even fearful about what lay ahead of him, and the story of Jacob wrestling with a man some twenty years later when he returned to Canaan and was afraid of his anticipated encounter with his angry brother Esau whose blessing he had stolen. Like these events which show psychological struggles, we could understand that the Abraham story shouldn't be taken literally. God was not involved. Abraham was developing his understanding of how to show God love. Should he do so, like the pagans around him, by sacrificing his son as a gift to God? Scripture states that he hears God speak to him commanding him to do this. But we can understand that it wasn't God speaking, but his own resolve: he will show his love of God by giving God what he loves best. He would follow the teachings of the masses. However, he comes to realize that this is not the way to worship his God. Interestingly, until the moment of realization, the Torah uses the generic word Elohim, God. However, at the moment of realization, the Torah switches to y-h-v-h, the name of the Jewish God.

While this interpretation is possible, it is not the popular one, and Rabbi Artson does not adopt it, takes the story literally, and interprets it in some 35 pages, verse by verse, giving readers its plain meaning as well as its deeper intellectual meaning, its homiletical, ethical, and religious interpretation, and its hidden, mystical meaning.

Then, in thirteen chapters, he explores different ways that the biblical story can teach people how to improve their behavior and act properly today. These essays could be drawn from both the literal and figurative interpretations of the near-sacrifice story. Rabbi Artson, for example, writes about different kinds of tests that people face; individuals who go through life without ever truly living, like cows chewing grass in a sun drenched field; the difficulties of establishing proper priorities; balancing spontaneity and foresight; about love and loyalties; what is faith, fear, and faithfulness; the value of principles; and how people can hear the voice of God.

Insider's View of Rabbi Artson's New Book

I had the privilege during the 1990's of working closely with the author when he was the Rabbi, I the synagogue educator, at Congregation Eilat in Mission Viejo, California. I remember one particular conversation I had with him during a meal our families shared together.

I told Brad about a Moment Magazine article I recently read about plagiarism among American rabbis. To illustrate the problem, the writer told a first hand account where he heard three different rabbis deliver word for word the same sermon.

The first time he heard the sermon was on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, when the `Binding of Isaac' Torah portion is read. The second time was at a Reform temple a few weeks later when the same Genesis passage is read as part of the yearly Shabbat Torah reading cycle. This Reform congregation has the tradition of publicly chanting Torah during its Kabbalat Shabbat Friday evening service. The third repetition occurred the next day on Saturday morning at another synagogue.

"Two or perhaps all three rabbis," said the writer "obviously did not feel the moral need to reveal he was not the originator of his words."

When I briefly mentioned the message the sermon emphasized, Brad excused him self from the table, went to his bed room, and returned with what looked like a college paper with a red ink "A+" on the cover page.

"If you read this," Brad said "I think you will find the sermon the three rabbis shared. ... I wrote it during my last year of rabbinic school. Before ordination, every student was required to write and deliver publicly a d'var Torah."

During rabbinic school at the Jewish Theological Seminary, Brad Artson once heard a professor comment that the `Binding of Isaac' story is a classic because the potential horror of its central event has an uncanny way of grabbing the reader's attention. The story, though, beyond emphasizing we should no longer engage in child sacrifices, really has no worthwhile moral lesson to teach.

To say Brad Artson disagreed with that assessment is an understatement. As a student, he chose to disprove those words before graduation. He has made it a point to disprove them every year since.

Any one who has experienced Brad Artson as a teacher, rabbi, and author knows about his gift communicating Torah study wisdom. His students and readers have come to expect from him a depth of formal learning, life experience, and profound reflection on both that stand out.

In Passing Life's Tests, Artson lives up to the high standards of excellence others have come to expect. In his cerebral yet accessible and eloquent writing, Artson articulates different challenges Abraham, Isaac, Sarah, and God confront in the story. He then shows how those challenges are universal and eternal by comparing them to common ethical dilemmas we inevitably face today.

In the book's first chapter, Artson shares his own English translation on the famous Genesis chapter. In the second, he offers a line for line commentary on every significant sentence, phrase, and word. In the remaining thirteen chapters, he does what he does best: offer profound insights about life derived from his Torah reading and study.

A worthwhile sermon can be judged by a simple criterion. Can the person who hears it say in his own simple and concise words what the sermon is about? Does the person walk away from the experience with a clear worthwhile message? The thirteen final chapters definitely achieve this standard of excellence.

Each final chapter is titled with a simple word or short phrase. The word or phrase each point to a broad subject. How does Rabbi Artson connect the broad subject with his reading of the Torah text? What is the positive message he wants to emphasize through his analysis? The ease in which readers will be able to answer these questions, and the learning and wisdom gained from the process, indicate the book's brilliance. I look forward to re-reading Passing Life's Tests for many years to come.

About the Author
Alexander Broadie is a Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at Glasgow University—a chair once occupied by Adam Smith—and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was appointed the first Henry Duncan Prize lecturer in Scottish Studies at the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1990-1993) and Gifford Lecturer in Natural Theology at Aberdeen University in 1994 before taking up post at Glasgow University in 1995. He was awarded the degree of Doctorat de l'université honoris causa by Blaise Pascal University, Clermont-Ferrand, for his contribution to Franco-Scottish relations in the field of the history of philosophy. Alexander was born in Edinburgh in 1942.

Truly "an accessible primer"

I came to this book as a general reader with only the slightest knowledge of the Scottish Enlightenment and, to be honest, no appreciation of its significant and lasting impact on religious, political, economic, scientific, and aesthetic thinking right into the present day. On the back cover of the book, the Edinburgh Review is quoted and it is worth repeating: "an accessible primer on the main ideas of the Scottish Enlightenment." Broadie's book is accessible and I am all the more grateful for that fact as I reflect on the relevance of the ideas of the Enlightenment to my Western identity. In that sense, this is not dry history but rather essential content and context for today's political and "culture wars" and, indeed, why we resist the barbarian's demand that we submit and return to the 7th century. Mind you, that's just me talking; Broadies's "The Scottish Enlightenment" is not a polemic. It is forthright, unbiased history without any agenda other than, well, providing the reader with "an accessible primer" on the Scottish Enlightenment. I highly recommend this book. Important stuff, well delivered. Thank you, Alexander Broadie.

If It's Not Scottish, It's ....

As a person of mildly above average intelligence and a very broad range of interests, I often have friends suggest that I should try out for Jeopardy. My standard [and honest] response [regardless of whether the comment was meant as a compliment or an insult] is that I have incredibly large gaps in my knowledge and I'd probably stink at Jeopardy. Alexander Broadie and his scholarly AND entertaining book The Scottish Enlightenment came to rescue me from one of my more embarrassing knowledge gaps. You'd've figured a person with some Scottish blood in his veins and who teaches at a high school that has a Scottish theme and a Highlander as a mascot would know a whole bunch about the pivotal period in history know as the Scottish Enlightenment?! The knowledge gap surfaced when I read Jack Repcheck's recent biography of James Hutton [The Man Who Found Time]. I researched the available literature on the Scottish Enlightenment and Broadie's book appeared to have the qualities needed to plug my knowledge gap. Written for the interested reader, The Scottish Enlightenment was scholarly enough to give me the short course that I wanted, but interesting and idiosyncratic enough to avoid reading like a textbook. It left me feeling quite satisfied about my knowledge of the Scottish Enlightenment and, like any good book, left me with a few questions to explore further [the connection between the Scottish Enlightenment and the American Revolution - enquiring minds want to know!]. I highly recommend Alexander Broadie's book to anyone with an interest in history, Scotland, the Enlightenment, or the Scottish Enlightenment.

The Scottish Enlightenment

There are periods associated with great intellectual achievement; the Golden Age of Pericles; the art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance; the literary and philosophical genius of fin-de-siecle Vienna; the Dutch Grand Masters and the Golden Age of Holland; Victorian England and the St. Petersburg of Peter the Great who brought the culture of the West to the previously isolated Russia.

Then there is the lesser known Scottish Enlightenment, which brought together some of the finest minds in intellectual history. Pure and applied science flourished at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Scientists developed new approaches to physics, chemistry, optics, mathematics and medicine. William Thompson (Later Lord Kelvin) developed major principles of thermodynamics; James Watt developed the steam engine, and William Cullen, a physician and chemist explored new frontiers, James Clerk Maxwell explained the mysteries of Saturn's rings and developed the principle of electromagnetism. James Hutton founded the modern science of geology which was expanded upon by James Playfair. The botanist Robert Brown discovered the important principle of Brownian Motion which was later to turn up in Einstein's theory of relativity. Visitors to Edinburgh were astonished that so much brilliance was to be encountered in this intellectual incubator in the cold, inhospitable climate of the Hebrides.

In recent years, there has been an outpouring of scholarly studies of the Scottish Enlightenment, among them Alexander Broadie's "The Scottish Enlightenment: The Historical Age of the Historical Nation" and "Crowded with Genius: The Scottish Enlightenment - Edinburgh's Moment of the Mind" by James Buchan.Crowded with Genius: The Scottish Enlightenment: Edinburgh's Moment of the Mind Most studies of the Scottish Enlightenment begin with David Hume and Francis Hutcheson , the most important moral philosophers of the movement, and Adam Smith, the first modern economist. A key element of their thought was skepticism - a refusal to accept on their face the arguments of ecclesiastic authority.
Within a relatively short time, the independent work of these various intellectuals began to circulate among the others, resulting in a synergistic effect. Broadie argues that enlighten-ment is more than freedom of thought, it is freedom of expression, without fear of reprisals from authorities.

How a grimy, overcrowded, heavily fortified Medieval city like Edinburgh became a vibrant, social intellectual center is the story of this book. Broadie occupies the same professorial seat at Glasgow University as Adam Smith, the founder of modern economics. The University has had, since its founding in 1451 prominent Enlightenment figures including Smith, Hucheson, physicist Lord Kelvin, James Watt, and numerous politicians including two British prime ministers and missionary=explorer David Livingston.

A GREAT READ!

I could not put the book down. What a fun read. The book is filled with macabre stories, true yarns and tall tales.

After reading this book, I am filled with ideas and theories. What can account for the vanishings near Bennington, Vermont, or Flight 19? D.B. Cooper where are you? Conspiracy-RFK assassination? Unsolved mysteries, ghosts, mayhem, the book covers all kinds of paranormal subjects.

The book's illustrations are good, but the stories are bewildering and sometimes creepy. Author Allan Pacheco, knows how to hook the reader and he has a odd sense of humor.

This book brings new information into famous stories that have been covered in other books; for example--I never knew what really happened to John Wilkes Booth. Or about USA's World War II Bat Bombers or the Philadelphia Experiment.

The book is loaded with documented stories that make you shake your head. The "MARY CELESTE" ghost ship, what became of its crew? Or the story of how the mummified remains of a Wild West outlaw was used as a funhouse wax dummy!

I recomend this book of the strange. What a great read!

This 2010 book was the first to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the impact of money on the economy, society and culture of the Greek and Roman worlds. It uses new approaches in economic history to explore how money affected the economy in antiquity and demonstrates that the crucial factors in its increasing influence were state-formation, expanding political networks, metal supply and above all an increasing sophistication of credit and contractual law. Covering a wide range of monetary contexts within the Mediterranean over almost a thousand years (c.600 BC–AD 300), it demonstrates that money played different roles in different social and political circumstances. The book will prove an invaluable introduction to upper-level students of ancient money, while also offering perspectives for future research to the specialist.

About the Author
Sitta von Reden is Lecturer in Ancient History at Universität München. She is the author of Exchange in Ancient Greece (1995) and co-editor, with Paul Cartledge and Paul Millett, of Kosmos: Essays in Order, Conflict and Community in Classical Athens (1998). Her most recent book is Money in Ptolemaic Egypt (2007).

Nice overview of a specialized topic.

Very nice overview of the topic. This is limited to money (the concept of a 'universal' measure of exchange) not just coins, but also not the economy. There are two major sections- the development of monetization and price formation. Obviously specialized, this is part of a series aimed at graduate students and above. It raised a number of issues that would make a good thesis topic.

My interest starts with Rome. I don't know a lot about Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean at this time but I was able to follow the book.

I will be reading more from this series Key Themes in Ancient History by Cambridge University Press.
