Stanford lecturer Murphy-Shigematsu’s sensitive, revealing inquiry into the multiethnic experience of Asian-Americans succeeds both as a comprehensive ethnic studies volume and an enlightening memoir of pushing back against categorizing humans with singular, rather than multiple identities. As the son of an Irish-American father and a Japanese mother, born in Japan during the post-WWII American occupation when mixed-race children were often seen as a symbol of foreign domination, he adds a personal dimension with his reflections, which allows a deeper comprehension and occasional contrast to the Asian-Americans he profiles. Carefully sequenced interviews and first-person narratives illuminate the quest for identity against conflicting pressures rooted in perception, family loyalty, and racism. Mitzi, half African-American and half Japanese, describes movingly of demanding her identity as “Blackanese,” out of loyalty to her mother, while Marshall, a Korean adopted by Jewish parents, tells of searching for his birth parents. About the Author
Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and Irish-American father and raised in Massachusetts. He received a doctorate in psychology from Harvard University, was professor at Tokyo University, and is consulting professor at Stanford University and Fielding Graduate University. He is the author of Multicultural Encounters and Amerasian Children.

Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu’s When Half Is Whole is a groundbreaking contemporary study of multiethnic Asian American identity which meticulously examines experiences and nuances of embodied racial and cultural plurality. When Half Is Whole analyzes episodes of conflict, resistance and reconciliation between individuals and systems of “mono-ethnic normativity” which often fail to appreciate with multiethnic “otherness.” As a psychologist of mixed ethnicity himself, Murphy-Shigematsu is driven by both scholarly and personal reasons as someone who has experienced both empowerment and marginalization.
While the narratives themselves can be strictly read as candid accounts of identity development, the text can also be engaged as an invaluable analytical lens. Multiethnic narratives demonstrate how ethnicity for both monoethnic and multiethnic individuals is conceptualized through individual amalgamations of kinship, gender, citizenship, public and private lives, personal experience, and phenotype. Murphy-Shigematsu’s rigorous analysis illustrates how ethnic identity is merely a construction of these elements rather than something innately somatic. Conversely, his work also reveals the power race and external racialization have over individual agency and one’s ability to validate their ownership over multiple identities.
Murphy-Shigematsu argues that multiethnics are often subjected to processes of marginalization based on inconstant “blood purity” standards of “ethnic normativity.” Despite phenotypical similarity or cultural affinity, multiethnics are automatically seen as “different” because of prevailing ideologies entrenched in racial formations. As made obvious by this book, though racial difference does not necessarily produce negative consequences, the potential for prejudice is omnipresent and emerges in many forms.
The narratives in When Half Is Whole effectively outline many dynamic contours of the “authenticity” debate by revealing how social boundaries at micro, meso, and macro levels ultimately rely on the capacity to dictate and maintain concepts such as race, ethnicity, and nation with totality. Thus, the themes within the text elucidate the fundamental operations of power which underlie Asian/American identity politics. Furthermore, these stories humanize the broader correlations between US and East Asian social, political, economic, and historical movements and the burgeoning of mixed-race Asian/American populations.
Through these “universally” human narratives, Murphy-Shigematsu also demonstrates how embodied difference forces mixed-race individuals to negotiate and challenge social boundaries in exceptional ways. Foremost, these oral histories reveal forms of prejudice and oppression that might otherwise go overlooked. While presented as testimonies of struggle, they are also offered as sites of healing. By valuing multiethnicity as something “whole” rather than fractured as a starting point, we can move towards a more embracive view of ethnicity and identity overall. As Murphy-Shigematsu writes, “The stories I present bring greater understanding to how identities today are flexible, inclusive, and multiple, and challenge the meaning of national and racial categories and boundaries” (6).
Rather than quantitative, Murphy-Shigematsu’s qualitative approach provides in-depth, humanized evidence to show how notions of race and ethnicity in relation to multiraciality intersect, conflict, and coalesce. The stories collected in the book serve both as the evidence and means to challenge oppression by illuminating the complexity of the seemingly static boundaries between ethnic groups. Each chapter focuses on a specific individual’s journey, offering their experiences and perspectives of how factors such as phenotype, family upbringing, citizenship, generation and geopolitical context shaped their sense of self.
When Half Is a Whole is a timely publication. According to the 2000 and 2010 Census, Asian Americans and multiethnics especially are among the fastest growing demographics in the United States. As such, “Asian American” as a political and social identity must be reimagined beyond potentially oppressive racial and ethnic lines in order to adequately reflect the reality of growing diversity. While maintaining the integrity of the storytelling process, Murphy-Shigematsu’s rigorous analysis and self-reflection liberates ethnicity from singular paradigms by recognizing its organic nature. Murphy-Shigematsu is able to effectively utilize these compelling narratives as critical tools for discussing broader dimensions of identity in relation to multiethnicity—public versus private identities, communities and families, social inclusion, racial phenotype, gender and bi-raciality/sexuality, names and ethnic imposition, ethnocentrism and citizenship.
Most importantly, Murphy-Shigematsu’s text offers guidance in anticipation of continuing trends of trasnationalism, globalization and the emerging prevalence of this supposedly “new” mixed-race phenomenon. Multiethnicity can no longer been seen as marginal but mainstream, “the norm,” and the future for many Asian American groups. A must-read

Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu has succeeded in writing a book that integrates his vast academic knowledge with his own life experiences and encounters in a beautifully moving way. This book touches the human heart and inspires those who fight for social justice to do more. It is also a book for all parents wanting to understand their children as they seek to define their own identities during the challenging adolescent years. It is a book not only about multiethnic Asian American identities but one that gracefully weaves topics as seemingly separate as politics, discrimination, power struggles, parenting, families, child development, and personal growth into a beautiful and inspirational tapestry.

Thought provoking and insightful

When I finished this book, I turned back to the beginning and started again. It is beautifully written, insightful and thought provoking. "When Half is Whole" made me think about my life and my identity, about race and prejudice, about the human need for acceptance and connection. Although the author is Asian American and he writes mostly about people who are part Asian and part American, it would be a shame if only Asian Americans read this book. I think Murphy-Shigematsu's stories have meaning and interest for anyone of mixed ethnicity, a demographic that is rapidly including more and more of us. And as I saw in the chapter about the Korean boy adopted by Jewish parents, ethnic identity issues are also pertinent to many adoptive families.
