Should be a required ancillary to your main learning medium
By David M
It took four years for the best grammar accompaniment to appear. That's when I started learning Mandarin. Like many of you who are satisfied with Pimsleur, you still needed more. I sat through classes in a university, used various software packages, and read books all contributing in different (and needed ways). The grammar problem though is recurring. I still have problems with guo/le that even in a classroom are not totally resolved. The Yip/Rimmington et al. grammar books just didn't resonate with my learning style: too formal, too detailed, too structured, and only in simplified (not to mention how much vocab you needed to understand well the examples).

Ross' treatment in the Schaum book is great. Lots and lots of examples (pinyin, simplified/traditional, English) with slight variations in usage illustrated. As has been pointed out in other reviews, having at least a year of study already improves its value. Actually there were distinctions made between some words I didn't know needed distinctions, such as zai/shi. Excellent treatment of other situations like the various unlike-English section on positional words (inside, outside, above, below, etc.). Another aspect is the exhaustive nature of some groupings or lists, for example, all the variations on these positional words and the possible combinations. Another example would be numbers/money/percentages etc. Almost more than you want.

This has been very helpful to me as a reference grammar that is excellent. In some cases, it would be helpful to have more descriptive text: like most Schaum's, text is terse. Also, time expressions, duration, etc. would be nice to be in a single place. Most are there, but you need to look for them.

It's inexpensive and worth the investment.

An excellent resource!
By Constant Reader
I had worked my way through all three of Pimsleur's Mandarin Comprehensive CD sets (each excellent its own right) and was looking for something to answer a few lingering questions. (Pimsleur is fantastic on giving you great pronunciation and practical speaking skills but often leaves you wanting to know a little more of the WHY behind the grammar.) This book was the perfect solution. It summarizes the core grammar accurately and succinctly and is very easy to work through once you've completed a course like Pimsleur. I also ordered a $50 reference grammar of Chinese from Routledge and found it almost useless in comparison. Just a really nice book that does exactly what it sets out to.

Even my tutor thinks it's great
By zhongwen xuesheng
I am preparing for an oral exam in Chinese. I'm using the on-line version of Rosetta Stone, which is good for listening. I'm using both of the Schaum's books for additional material, a contemporary Chinese reader ("Shifting Tides" with CD) with a tutor.

According to my tutor, one of the most important differences between someone who can just manage in China, and someone who is conversant, is their grammar. She believes good grammar can cover lack of vocabulary in an oral exam.

Schaum's covers the topics very thoroughly, with useful exercises to cement the topic. Each chapter covers a different part of speech -- nouns, verbs, adverbs, etc. Each chapter starts with the basics and progresses into details. They have examples of good usage and bad usage (accompanied by yucky faces). On the downside, grammar is explained in linguistic terms, e.g. aspectual suffixes, which I am not very familiar with. The examples make clear the meanings.

This book is thorough. I've studied Chinese off and on for many years, and have used many different texts. So the grammar I have learned is spotty. This is a comprehensive study. My tutor (who teaches at the university) has mentioned that it covers topics rarely covered in other textbooks.

I like that the text is written in traditional, simplified characters as well as in pinyin, with an English translation. Studying for an oral exam, I have less interest in knowing characters, so I've been looking for pinyin texts.

This book is not for beginning Chinese students. There is far more vocabulary than a beginning Chinese student would know. I routinely add words from the book to my vocabulary flash cards --such as zhuang(4) guan(1) de Da(4) Xia(2) gu(3) -- magnificient Grand Canyon.

I consider this one of the best purchases I've made for studying.

Lock the doors. Close the windows. And prepare yourself for the heart-stopping debut of Anthony Izzo, a new master of horror who will chill you to the bone. . .

Jack Harding and his friends feel sorry for the new kid in town. His name is Ronnie Winter, and he's a bit of a weirdo. So when the local bullies try to beat him up, Jack and his friends step in to protect Ronnie--and that's their first mistake. Because Ronnie Winter is not like any other kid they've ever known. He lives at the old Steadman place, in the big creepy mansion that used to be a mental hospital. And his young, beautiful mother has a strange way of making Jack promise to be Ronnie's friend. . .forever.

The closer Jack and his friends get to Ronnie, the colder it gets. The town is plunged into a wave of brutal snowstorms--and plagued by a series of gruesome murders. And as the grisly death toll mounts, Jack realizes that Ronnie is surrounded by something far more powerful than a mother's love--he's guarded by a force of unspeakable evil that will torture and destroy everything in its path. . .

The Thing in the Tunnel

"Listen," Paul said.

Slow footsteps echoed, a soft-crunch in the dark. At first Jack thought Ronnie turned the flashlight off and snuck into the tunnel in order to scare them, but the footsteps were too heavy. They belonged to someone bigger.

"Reach out your hand, Paul."

"Okay."

They started to go but something found Paul first.

It jerked Paul back, and purely out of reflex, Jack clamped on to Paul's hand, this alone preventing him from being torn back into the tunnel by whatever was down there.

"It's got me hooked! Its arm is around me!"

Jack felt Paul leave his feet as his attacker hoisted him into the air, intent on dragging Paul back into the tunnel.

It pulled again, like a shark dragging a swimmer down, and it was too strong. Paul's hand slipped from Jack's, and Paul shrieked.

"Let me go! Bastard! Let me go! God, it smells bad!"

Jack charged ahead and slammed into someone as solid as a muscle man in a magazine. He wrapped his arms around the waist and pulled, but it was like trying to drag down a redwood tree. He was being dragged behind the guy like tin cans on a wedding car. It stank like old leaves or hair that's clogged in a drain, wet and dead.

What is it and why did we have to run into it?

Freezing Cold Suspense
By Aunt Paulette
Anthony Izzo's first novel takes place in the 80's during a few blizzarding days in a Northeastern city. Izzo makes you feel the heavy trudging through the snow, the wind slapping you in the face and the fear of being caught out there where an inhuman creature is brutally murdering people. The main characters are boys around 12 yrs. old, who have to deal with tough bullies, school, parents and girls, and the new rich kid, Ronnie, who flips out at times. Ronnie has a young, sexy mother who can read minds, heal broken bones and protect her son at any price. The characters in this suspenseful story are well formed, with contrasting dark and light personalities bumping into each other often. The writing style is very good, the pace is quick, the ending...predictable, but satisfying. This would make a great movie. I enjoyed visualizing the images that Izzo created and the 'not too horrible' horror of it.

BREATHTAKING SUSPENCE!
By Lee Jones
Author Anthony Izzo's debut novel Cruel Winter is truly frightening and exciting. I was unable to put this book down, it kept me on the edge with anticipation throughout. The attention to detail and the great cast of characters ables your imagination to soar. I highly recomend this great read to anyone that enjoys a suspenseful book! Mr. Izzo I can hardly wait for your next novel!

Fantastic!
By L. Maynard
I loved this book. It reminded me of staying up late on Saturday Night and watching Chiller Theater with Fritz the Night Owl. This is just a good old-fashioned scary story. There is nothing believable or plausible about it. It is exactly what the author probably intended it to be, good, scary, spine tingling fun.The gore factor is kept at a minimum, which is great. It is scary in the way 6th sense was scary. You let your imagination run wild, and run it did.

There's a new kid in town and has moved into the largest estate in the area. He's overweight, pushy, and writes checks his body can't cash, but he's also fun to be around. His name is Ronnie. Ronnie's mom is a widow, a very rich widow, who loves her son and will stop at nothing to protect him. After a run-in with the school bullies, Ronnie's butt is saved by some kids who soon befriend Ronnie and are asked by his mother to keep an eye out for him and let no harm befall him. Join Ronnie, Jack, Emma, Paul, and Chris as they deal with typical junior high issues, such as bullies, parents, school dances, and not so typical issues like out-running a creature with no eyes who's hell-bent on tearing them apart, literally. That's really all one can say without giving too much of the story away.

It's a roller-coaster ride of fun, chills and suspense. I do have to warn you: if you don't enjoy a book that snatches you up and takes off with you into a wonderland of imagination, then don't waste your time. If you like the old Creature from the Black Lagoon type of story, then run, don't walk to the nearest bookstore or library and grab a copy of this book. I can't wait for his next novel.

Alexander I: The Tsar Who Defeated Napoleon, by Marie-Pierre Rey

Alexander I was a ruler with high aspirations for the people of Russia. Cosseted as a young grand duke by Catherine the Great, he ascended to the throne in 1801 after the brutal assassination of his father. In this magisterial biography, Marie-Pierre Rey illuminates the complex forces that shaped Alexander’s tumultuous reign and sheds brilliant new light on the handsome ruler known to his people as "the Sphinx."

Despite an early and ambitious commitment to sweeping political reforms, Alexander saw his liberal aspirations overwhelmed by civil unrest in his own country and by costly confrontations with Napoleon, which culminated in the French invasion of Russia and the burning of Moscow in 1812. Eventually, Alexander turned back Napoleon’s forces and entered Paris a victor two years later, but by then he had already grown weary of military glory. As the years passed, the tsar who defeated Napoleon would become increasingly preoccupied with his own spiritual salvation, an obsession that led him to pursue a rapprochement between the Orthodox and Roman churches.

When in exile, Napoleon once remarked of his Russian rival: “He could go far. If I die here, he will be my true heir in Europe.” It was not to be. Napoleon died on Saint Helena and Alexander succumbed to typhus four years later at the age of forty-eight. But in this richly nuanced portrait, Rey breathes new life into the tsar who stood at the center of the political chessboard of early nineteenth-century Europe, a key figure at the heart of diplomacy, war, and international intrigue during that region’s most tumultuous years.

From Booklist
Napoleon is, of course, a familiar figure to even those only vaguely aware of the details of his career. Tsar Alexander I, the ruler most directly responsible for ending the supposed invincibility of Napoleon, receives little notice, especially on this side of the Atlantic. Rey, a professor of Russian and Soviet history at the Sorbonne, has written a detailed yet highly readable biography of a man whose character remains elusive and controversial. Alexander, the grandson of Catherine the Great, ascended the throne in 1801 after the brutal murder of his father by disgruntled nobles. Like his grandmother, he seemed influenced by Enlightenment ideas, proposed a series of liberal reforms, yet eventually became a staunch defender of autocracy. As a military leader, he could be mercurial, but he showed considerable steel in his spine in resisting Napoleon’s invasion. Rey probes but never resolves Alexander’s contradictory impulses, but this is a well-done biography that is appropriate for general readers interested in European history. --Jay Freeman

Review
"Alexander's great strength was the same as his fatal flaw: unbound by filial piety or consistent ideological conviction, he considered himself to be elect, the beneficiary of inspiration denied to other men. It is a truism that hubris of this kind leads reliably to disaster. What makes Rey's book so poignant and vital is the way she shows what else it can produce."
—London Review of Books
“Rey … has written a detailed yet highly readable biography of a man whose character remains elusive and controversial…. This is a well-done biography that is appropriate for general readers interested in European history.”
—Booklist

"This book does not dispel the mystery – an impossible task – but it is the most detailed biography available in English, and Rey makes extensive use of direct quotation to provide a revealing portrayal of an assertive, convinced reformer on the throne. Highly recommended."
–CHOICE

“Marie-Pierre Rey has written a new biography of Tsar Alexander I that should become the standard work in any language.”
—TheJournal of Modern History

"This magisterial study of Alexander I rests on meticulous archival research and scholarly reading in multiple languages....This work will be a definitive study of Alexander I and the political history of his era."
—Slavic Review
“This is a well-researched, comprehensive and balanced biography of Alexander I.”
—Canadian-American Slavic Studies

"This new biography by Marie-Pierre Rey, a specialist in Russian history, is by far the best. Far from just reading the immense output of books and memoirs of the time, she has taken up the whole case by systematically consulting archives in several countries and the results are as splendid as the effort. . . . In this magisterial work there is no lapse; Marie-Pierre Rey is nuanced and subtle, her mastery of history is allied with the highest knowledge of the available sources."

(Le Monde)

"Marie-Pierre Rey with her Alexander I will surprise even the finest connoisseurs of Tsarism. First because she relies on a good number of unpublished sources and underused archives, then because she knows how to derive the most from them, and finally because she delivers a full psychology of a character who vertiginously tried to seize the course of history."

(Le Figaro)

Very indepth assessment of Alexander I
By Elizabeth Boldy
I found this to be an excellent book, both in the style of its writing which was very readable and in its in depth insight into the history of this fascinating man. It is not perhaps a book for a light reader as it is scholarly in its approach, and very much involved in the European politics of the period. But it is all the more interesting for that. The portrait of Alexander leaves one with the view that he was a man to be admired, while at the same time, blind to the sometimes inefficiency of some of his foreign policy, particularly in his dealings with Napoleon and later in his life to problems within Russia itself. This is one of the most fascinating parts of the book. I highly recommend this biography to anyone interested in Czarist Russia.

Incompetent translation, fact-checking, and editing
By Eclipsegroupie
This book is a mess. The translation is clumsy, the vocabulary often quirky in the extreme, and serious fact-checking and editing glaringly absent.
One would think that in a scholarly work (which this purports to be) someone would have noticed that there is a difference between Elbe (the river) and Elba (the island). Not so: "Prussia lost ... all its lands situated to the west of the Elba" [p.184] as well as some "land east of the Elba" [p.185]. And in 1813 Alexander celebrated Easter "on the banks of the Elba" [p.266]. Well, at least they're consistent.
Yaroslavl is a town in Russia, "Yaroslav" [p.128] isn't. Jena is a town in Germany, "Iena" [p.362] isn't. Sebastopol [p.377] lies in California, Sevastopol in Russia. Alexander had his summer residence on Kamenny (not "Kammeny" [p.132]) Island. The 1721 and 1743 peace treaties between Russia and Sweden were concluded in Nystad (not "Nystadt" [p.120]) and Åbo (not "Abbo" [p. 218]), respectively. And, since the Finnish (rather than the original Swedish) names of towns in Finland are consistently used elsewhere in the text, one would expect to see Uusikaupunki and Turku here. But perhaps someone didn't know that these were Finnish towns? The original Swedish name for Hamina is Fredrikshamn, not "Friedrichshamm" [p.406 n.27].
Mikhail Speransky couldn't possibly have been chancellor of the University of Turku [p.223] since that institution didn't come into being until 1920. He was chancellor of the Imperial Academy (Kejserliga Akademien) in Turku. Konstantin Pobedonostsev was not the "procurer of the Holy Synod" [p.382], he was its Chief Procurator. "Non nobis, sed nomine tuo, Domine" (Psalm 113 in the Vulgate, 115 in the King James) means "Not to us, but to thy name, O Lord (give glory)", not "Blessed be the name of the Lord" [p.258].
The translator shows all the signs of being a non-native speaker of English who has used a dictionary to look up a French word and then, seemingly at random, chosen one of the many English translations proffered. "The years from 1801 to 1805 were thus dense years in the life of Emperor Alexander" [p.136]. Dense? Alexander was "received with luster and sympathy" [p.141]. Luster? Alexander was confident "in the immensity of the Russian climate" [p,234]. Immensity? Territorial losses are described as "amputations" [p.185], Pushkin became an "assiduous member" of a literary society [p.307], and Alexander opened the Polish parliament with a speech "pronounced in French" [p.314]. The French refused to grant the Russians a "blank signature" (carte blanche?) on the Ottoman issue [p.193], and one Russian commander was unable to "federate" the Russian armies [p.242], but his successor was able to "cement" them [p.244]. Alexander, towards the end of his life, engaged in "bulimic traveling" [p.351].
The treatment of the prepositions of nobility is confused throughout. Here's the rule: if they are part of a title, translate them. If they're part of a proper name, don't. Thus "Sophie-Dorothea de Württemberg" should be Sophie-Dorothea of Württemberg (that's her title), but the Swedish ambassador was not "Count of Stedingk" [p.188] but Count von Stedingk (that's his name). "S.E." [p.368] stands for 'Son Excellence' - why not translate that?
Competent editing could have cleared up many of these messes, but such editing was, obviously, not available. In 1806, we learn, France was planning to deprive Prussia "of Hanover to give instead to England" [p.174]. Was France was going to give the German province of Hanover to its archenemy England?! Alexander "remained viscerally hostile to the one who continued to call himself in private correspondence 'Bonaparte' or 'the Corsican' "[p.182]. Did Napoleon call himself "Bonaparte" or "the Corsican"?! We're rewriting history here.
I could go on, but you get the idea. You find yourself bumping into so many misbegotten trees that you begin to lose sight of - not to speak of interest in - the whole bloody forest. But there is a tale here, of an autocrat who acceded to the throne after the murder of his father (in which he was probably complicit), who was brought up in the spirit of the Enlightenment and therefore opposed serfdom, who anticipated the Napoleonic invasion and saw clearly how to repel it, who occupied France after Napoleon's defeat and gave France (and Finland and Poland) liberal (for the times) constitutions, but who then fell under the influence of religious mystics, shed his Enlightenment heritage and turned into a reactionary intent on preserving autocracy and the divine rights of kings, and who, fueled by messianic delusions, apparently approached the pope in an attempt to unify the Orthodox and Latin churches. He died without legitimate heirs at the age of 47 - or did he? Perhaps he, like the Elvis of myth, faked his own death and lived out his life as a holy man in Siberia.
Fascinating guy, apparently, this Alexander. But how far can you trust a source that claims that the inhabitants of Riga are Lithuanians [p.141]? Oy vey!

Excellent Book on Alexander
By Nicholas Roberts
This is the best biography on Alexander out there for sure. It covers all aspects of his life and not only the military and political parts. I got the idea of his personality and how he was the way he was from this book. It covers his childhood, adolescence, adulthood as well as his political life. No part of Alexander's life is left untouched by this book. To make things even better the book is well written and enjoyable. I would highly recommend reading this if you want to learn more about Alexander.

Dynasty of Evil: Star Wars Legends (Darth Bane), by Drew Karpyshyn

Twenty years have passed since Darth Bane, reigning Dark Lord of the Sith, demolished the ancient order devoted to the dark side and reinvented it as a circle of two: one Master to wield the power and pass on the wisdom, and one apprentice to learn, challenge, and ultimately usurp the Dark Lord in a duel to the death. But Bane's acolyte, Zannah, has yet to engage her Master in mortal combat and prove herself a worthy successor. Determined that the Sith dream of galactic domination will not die with him, Bane vows to learn the secret of a forgotten Dark Lord that will assure the Sith's immortality - and his own.

A perfect opportunity arises when a Jedi emissary is assassinated on the troubled mining planet Doan, giving Bane an excuse to dispatch his apprentice on a fact-finding mission - while he himself sets out in secret to capture the ancient holocron of Darth Andeddu and its precious knowledge. But Zannah is no fool. She knows that her ruthless Master has begun to doubt her, and she senses that he is hiding something crucial to her future. If she is going to claim the power she craves, she must take action now.

While Bane storms the remote stronghold of a fanatical Sith cult, Zannah prepares for her Master's downfall by choosing an apprentice of her own: a rogue Jedi cunning and cold-blooded enough to embrace the Sith way and to stand beside her when she at last wrests from Bane the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith.

But Zannah is not the only one with the desire and power to destroy Darth Bane. Princess Serra of the Doan royal family is haunted by memories of the monstrous Sith soldier who murdered her father and tortured her when she was a child. Bent on retribution, she hires a merciless assassin to find her tormentor - and bring him back alive to taste her wrath.

Only a Sith who has taken down her own Master can become Dark Lord of the Sith. So when Bane suddenly vanishes, Zannah must find him - possibly even rescue him - before she can kill him. And so she pursues her quarry from the grim depths of a ravaged world on the brink of catastrophe to the barren reaches of a desert outpost, where the future of the dark side's most powerful disciples will be decided, once and for all, by the final, fatal stroke of a lightsaber.

Another great book by a talented author
By Spirit of Redemption
This is a great way to end the Darth Bane trilogy and even if Drew Karpyshyn does not continue on with Darth Zannah's adventures, this is a perfect way to go out. To me, Darth Bane is as interesting (if not more so) as any Sith Lord we've heard of, including Darth Sidious. He was a well-developed, intriguing character that I enjoyed getting to know through the course of three books.

The pacing of the book was excellent and the new characters introduced helped raise the tension as the book built to its climax. There seemed to be many ways for the story to end still, even with only 20 pages left. And that is a great compliment for any book or author.

I still believe the Darth Bane books are the best of the Expanded Universe books, even better than the Timothy Zahn trilogy that started them all.

Evil Comes Full Circle
By JMack
Having finished reading the Darth Bane Trilogy, I feel no sense of disappointment. Drew Karpyshyn is solid storyteller with good pacing. The reader never gets a sense that something is "filler" in the story. Though some have pointed out minor contradictions in the Darth Bane character, these readers seem to have the pure purpose of finding a flaw.

"Dynasty of Evil" finds Darth Bane feeling vulnerable. Physical ailments are becoming more apparent, and Bane is certain that his apprentice Darth Zannah has noticed. The time for the apprentice to become the master is drawing near. Bane questions whether Zannah is a worthy apprentice and begins a search for the secrets of immortality.

But even as Bane seeks self-preservation, Zannah plans her path as Darth Lord of the Sith. She discovers the vary flaws in herself that Bane recognizes. Unaware that Bane is trying to seek immortality, she even finds an apprentice who combines the suave of James Bond with a college slacker. The Jedi hover in the background of the story as the Sith take center stage. Characters from the previous books reappear and play a key role in the book. Even naming the characters would risk revealing the ending.

For a moment, I thought the endig would be inappropriate. Without giving the ending away, Karpyshyn chose the correct way to end the series. My only regret is that the series is over. Darth Bane is an incredibly compelling character.

A Duel of Sith Lords
By Todd O'Rourke
"Star Wars: Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil" is the final part to the Darth Bane trilogy, which in my opinion is one of the best series in the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU). This novel continues ten years after the events of "Rule of Two", the second novel in the trilogy. To avoid plot spoilers of the first two novels, I will try and make the summary of the plot as broad as possible.

With the Rule of Two established: one Master to wield the power and pass on the wisdom, and one apprentice to learn, challenge, and ultimately usurp the Dark Lord in a duel to the death. However, things aren't necessary going according to plan. Darth Zannah, Bane's acolyte, has yet to prove herself in mortal combat with her master. Determined that the Sith Empire will not collapse and die with Bane, he vows to learn how to become immortal.

I will be honest, as much as I like Darth Bane; I actually ended up liking Zannah more by the end of this novel. It seems to me that author Drew Karpyshyn has spent more time developing Zannah, which may or may not be a good thing depending on how fascinated you are with her character. She steals the novel with more complexities that develop her character more than the last two books. She is also part of a side plot that brings new life into the series.

I have always been a supporter of Karpyshyn and his bodies of work; however, I must admit that this is the weakest novel in the series. He reworks ideas that have already been developed in the first two novels. Bane ultimately goes on another adventure to become an unstoppable force of destruction, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it becomes more of the same old. Moreover, it also seems that the author's ability to create fresh ideas has all but diminished.

Although Karpyshyn's writing is not top notch, and his ideas are just a rehash, this novel is certainly one of the best novels in the EU. The negative portions of the novel do not out weigh the positives, and as such, I recommend this novel to anyone who has read the series.

Amazon.com Review
Many of us don't fit into the conventional career mold, particularly those of us who work--or aspire to work--in creative capacities. Quality-of-life seekers will feel affirmed upon reading Carol Lloyd's Creating a Life Worth Living, in which she posits, "You are actively searching for two things: the creative life you want to lead and the way to create and maintain that life so that you are as sane and as happy and as financially solvent as you want to be." Not just for those engaged specifically in the arts, Creating a Life Worth Living is for everyone who realizes the need to approach their personal and career problems in a more creative way.

"Every life can benefit from the brilliance and thrill of unleashed creativity," argues Lloyd, "but there are some professions that cannot survive without it." Citing fields as wildly divergent as events planning, teaching, and electronic media (as well as those in the arts), Lloyd outlines nothing less than a plan for reinventing a life. The tasks taken from her workshop encourage readers to investigate old belief systems, then generate new ones. Adding to the book's richness and diversity of resources are writing exercises that provoke awareness, art assignments, and interviews with such artists as vocalist Meredith Monk and writer Mary Gaitskill. Creating a Life Worth Living helps readers focus on and respect a part of the self too often lost amidst the larger pressures to conform.

About the Author
Carol Lloyd, a writer, performer, and entrepreneur, is the founder of The Writing Parlor, a San Francisco literary arts center. For the past seven years, she has led Life Worth Living workshops, helping hundreds attain their creative dreams. Her essay and short fiction have appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times Magazine, the San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Focus, and Salon magazine, where she is a regular contributor.

FOR NON-ARTISTS TOO
By Bonita L. Davis
At first glance I shied away from the book. After all, it clearly is a specialized text for artists only! How wrong I was." Creating a Life Worth Living "addresses the need of both artists and non-artists to search for a creative life and maintain it. The concepts, exercises and techniques shared in its pages speaks to the unactualized creativity embeded in our souls. Of course the text is focused on artists (broadly used term) but the imparted information can be used by people in all fields of endeavors.
I found three areas of information especially helpful to the non-artist. First, you are provided with mini-profiles and interviews of artists ( in varied fields) sharing their journey of success. Their stories put in perspective that one must struggle and stay disciplined in your field. Second, the author develops artistic profiles to enable a person to identify their inherent artistic style of creativity. The profile is almost an echo of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator profile only this time geared for artists. Such a profile helps an artist to capitalize on their strengths. Third, jobs are identified that can support or undermine your creativity. The pros and cons are discussed to enable you to make the best out of your long term artistic goal. No matter how creative you are certain material needs have to be met (ie, drudgery job) in order to live and fill your artistic goal.
Lloyd's book is an excellent manual on how to live out and actualize your creative spirit regardless of what field you choose. Your dreams will become a reality through planning, research, imagination and putting your plan into action.

Creative "types," this is your book!
By A Customer
This book speaks specifically to people who aspire to creative careers. Lloyd talks about the pitfalls that keep people from creating, as well as the structures in the day that foster artistic activity. The author knows intimately what helps and what doesn't, in terms of an artists' career development and personal habits. Also, throughout the book are descriptions and interviews with successful artists. These were instrumental in helping me see that there are many different ways to be a successful artists, and that it is possible to make a living doing art. In fact, nothing seems more fun than that!
To anyone who is creative, not necessarily even an artist, I HIGHLY recommend this book. I've read many, many career books, and this one has done it like no other, because it goes beyond merely brainstorming what you love to do, into structuring your lifestyle to focus on what you love to do.

Clarify Your Creative Ambitions
By H. Grove (errantdreams)
Carol Lloyd's "Creating a Life Worth Living" bears a subtitle that declares it to be "a practical course in career design for artists, innovators, and others aspiring to a creative life." And in that, it succeeds quite well. The course (developed from workshops Lloyd teaches) starts with the assumption that maybe you have a yearning to do something different with your life, but you don't yet know what that is or, at least, how to do it. Starting with a "daily action" and moving on to some material on idea generation and abstraction, Lloyd mixes thoughts on creativity ("It's good to simply look at your lived experience and separate it from your concepts about 'life.'") with concrete exercises and interviews with successful creative people from all walks of life: teachers, painters, actors, writers, inventors, entrepreneurs, performance artists, dancers, directors, and more.
A book like this won't bandage up your life and make everything better in five easy steps. It won't reveal a magical key that will show you how to make millions from your watercolors. But it can help you to see your life a bit more clearly. It can help you to see the options and resources you might have missed, and it can help you to figure out what needs you have, creatively speaking, and how best to fulfill them.
Questions encourage you to take both the short and the long view, the practical and the ideal. Lloyd helps you to let go of your preconceptions by having you write down everything, no matter how silly, and by sharing stories of people who succeeded by doing what everyone told them they shouldn't do. So if you're already snugly fitted into your creative career, you'll have little use for this book. But if you're struggling to figure out what to do next or where to go, this book could help you turn your interests and desires into a concrete plan of action that fulfills both emotional and practical needs.

How to Prove It: A Structured Approach, by Daniel J. Velleman

Many students have trouble the first time they take a mathematics course in which proofs play a significant role. This new edition of Velleman's successful text will prepare students to make the transition from solving problems to proving theorems by teaching them the techniques needed to read and write proofs. The book begins with the basic concepts of logic and set theory, to familiarize students with the language of mathematics and how it is interpreted. These concepts are used as the basis for a step-by-step breakdown of the most important techniques used in constructing proofs. The author shows how complex proofs are built up from these smaller steps, using detailed 'scratch work' sections to expose the machinery of proofs about the natural numbers, relations, functions, and infinite sets. To give students the opportunity to construct their own proofs, this new edition contains over 200 new exercises, selected solutions, and an introduction to Proof Designer software. No background beyond standard high school mathematics is assumed. This book will be useful to anyone interested in logic and proofs: computer scientists, philosophers, linguists, and of course mathematicians.

This Book Taught Me How to "Get" Math... Please Read On..
By Baze
Before buying this book, I struggled in math. I excelled at "calculating" stuff by simply plugging in numbers into some sort of equation our high school teachers would spoil us with, but when I got to college, I had to start thinking abstractly- and it bothered me a lot, because I had no idea how to test or prove the logic of some statement. I was doing very poorly in linear algebra and desperately needed help- lo and behold, my professors weren't helpful (at all). Someone recommended this proof writing book to me, and I am VERY grateful for that referral.

The book takes the average student (it's shocking with how little math background one needs) and introduces him to basic boolean logic. You know, material like "If A is true, and B is false, then A implies B is false." In a discrete mathematics course, one would call this "truth tables." From there, the author takes the reader into set theory, basic proofs, group theory, etc- and into more advanced topics, like the Cantor-Schroeder-Bernstein theorem, countability, etc. So what makes this book stand out?

(1) Readability. Many math professors stop just short of taking pride in how confusing, abstract, or daunting their lectures can be. Velleman, however, goes the extra mile in the text to see that the reader UNDERSTANDS the logical buildup and concepts of mathematical proofs. Sure, set theory can be confusing- but after reading several other texts in discrete math, including "Discrete Math and its Applications" by Kenneth Rosen (if you're reading this, no offense) I've found that Velleman by far writes the most comprehensive and cohesive explanations for understanding set theory. Making the material accessible is the mark of a real "teacher," and if you read through this book yourself, I believe you'd agree that Velleman is a pretty legit teacher.

(2) Examples. There are plenty- plenty that Velleman works out himself. Reading the examples alone- and actually taking the time to understand them- is a task that's up to the reader, obviously, but they do show results almost immediately in understanding discrete math.

(3) Problems (exercises). There's never a shortage of exercises, I found, as I tried to work through the problem set. There are plenty. Fortunately, there are some answers in the back, but just enough so that you can verify to see if you're understanding the material, and not enough so that you find yourself copying every answer in the back (even the best students get tempted to do that). Velleman gives the proper amount of answers in the back and a ton of exercises to do. If you complete them all properly, you'd be far ahead of the curve amongst math majors.

I know my review may have been too wordy, or too optimistic. However, my feelings are very honest and not exaggerated: this book is written so one can learn discrete mathematics, and really helps the reader understand what higher math is all about- and how mathematicians think, write, and communicate. This book deserves an A+, and I've only given that score out to a handful of books.

Completely changed my view of proofs.
By L. Burton
Now I understand how proofs are being constructed. I can read and write them the right way! After reading this book I went back to my Calculus textbook and started looking at the proofs. I was amazed at how differently I perceived them. I actually enjoyed reading them and understood why they were written that way.

A little info about the book. Basically, it teaches you the same material that you learn in a Discrete Mathematics course - Propositional logic, Sets and Proofs, Relations, Functions, and Mathematical Induction. However, it looks at those subjects from a completely different perspective. There's absolutely no practical information - all you do is prove stuff.

I strongly advise to learn Discrete Math before reading this book, because getting straight to the proofs of the material, that you just have learned and have no previous experience with, can get very tough.

The first two chapters were a bit boring and too easy - but only because I have already learned that stuff. Chapter 3 is where you start to do your own proofs and is where it gets fun.

The exercises are not hard, and shouldn't present any trouble for the reader. However, I did find the exercises in the last 3 chapters to be more challenging. There were some problems on which I was simply staring for an hour, literally, trying to figure out the way to prove it. The theorem made sense to me, but I couldn't find a way to put into strict mathematical proof! But let me tell you, there's nothing like getting a "Eureka!" moment and figuring out the answer all by yourself. I have just spent 1.5 hours doing 1 problem, and after getting the answer I've felt like I have accomplished something.

Solutions to: Does it work on Kindle? & Are there Solutions to the Exercises?
By DrTrips
My goal for this review is to make it as helpful as possible to someone considering to buy this Book !
-I will not go over most of the summaries of the text provided by my fellow reviewers but will provide two important clarifications.
1st:
I read in another review that that the Kindle version of the text interprets some logical operators or other notation incorrectly causing confusion with what the text or exercises are referring to....
This Statement is FALSE. I have purchased the kindle version and did not find one inconsistency and all notations are indeed accurate.
2nd:
I have found that a major complaint about this text is that it does not provide enough solutions to its exercises for one to verify whether they have actually learned the material or not.
This Statement is TRUE. On average, out of 7 question in each section, only 2 solutions are given in the back of the text.

HOWEVER!!! There is another way to circumvent this problem. The Department of Mathematics of the University of California, Santa Barbara has been so kind as to post the Solutions to the unlisted problems on their website.
Please visit this site to view them:
http://www.math.ucsb.edu/~dai/813wang.html

Now with both of these clarifications in place, and after going through a couple of other Mathematical Proof books, and I personally prefer this one. It is direct, and covers the basics needed for understanding and doing proofs.
One must understand that doing proofs is a skill a Mathematician gains through vast experience, practice and long hours of thought. Finding a book that breaks down a universal method of proofing in the same simple way an Algebra text shows how to use a formula will not be possible. Mainly because there is no universal method of proofing. All one can then hope to do in order to understand higher level of mathematics, or what I would describe better as the underlying foundation of mathematics, is to understand the basic language of proofs, their structure, and their organization enough for the reader to go forth and gain their own experience.
And this book does precisely that
